Worth the money and your time ...
I have read author David Blatner's book on quark and being very familar with that program, I found his book on moving to indesign immensely helpful. You get great tips on how to do things that you have already established in your quark workflow. The index is well organized and a quick reference.

Not well organized
Hard to find what I wanted. Preferred the Sams All in One for Creative Suite 2. Much easier to navigate. This book was a waste of money.

It Moved Me!
As always with a Blatner book, this guide delivers exactly what it says it will. I was up and running in InDesign in no time and continue to reference its succinct text as I work. I recommend this to anyone who knows Xpress and wants to get InDesign going in a hurry. ... Read more

Pretty good
Although I am usually not a big fan of the Visual Quick Start series I really like this one.Mr. Alspach certainly knows what he is writing about.Written in a clear, pleasant way without the unnecessary stupid jokes you encounter far too much in computer books these days.Great coverage of all the basic and intermediate Pagemaker stuff.Good as a study book and very good as a reference book. If you are a beginning or intermediate Pagemaker user needing a book to support you when you are using Pagemaker, buy this one.Read more

Extremely helpful and Very Practical
I recently became a volunteer editor for two publications and it was suggested to me to learn the program Pagemaker 7, since that was used on prior publications. Though I did get the program, it was very hard to learn from the self help section. I came across Kevin Siegel's book while searching on Amazon, bought the book and I am amazed in such short time with what I have been able to understand, learn and remember and more importantly, put to use. I just wish there was a similar book by Mr. Siegel on Photoshop. This is the book you should get if you want to learn Pagemaker 7 the "right" way.

A great book for people who have anxiety about learning softward
Kevin Seigel has put together the simplest, handiest, user- friendliest book I can imagine on Pagemaker and I recommend it to everybody who has the software as a basic reference. I have always considered myself to be too impatient to learn Pagemaker. I've taken Pagemaker classes and felt like I failed & they failed because they're so boring and it all seems so easy, but when I leave class I forget it all and none of the manuals or handouts are very good and when I try to put a page together I just get upset. But this book is so step by step and basic, if you just do it, take it lesson by lesson, you'll find yourself understanding how the program works and what it can do, at least enough to accomplish whatever project you're working on. I'm happy to say that the knowledge builds on itself and I actually feel that I'm gaining some proficiency in Pagemaker!

Wrong! Don't listen to the guy under me!!
This book is great!!! Downloading the necessary files has never been so easy.The instructions to go the site to download the files is in the book. This guy under me is telling a lie. You don't need the instructor files. That's for instructors ONLY. You download the STUDENT files on the site. These are the files you need. That is all. This book is very clear. I learned how to create my own brochures, .pdf manuals, reports, etc., just by using this book. I will be learning Flash MX using the Illustrated Series. Don't give this book a one just because you and your professor don't know how to access the internet. I suggest you and your instructor take an Intro course in computer science first before using this book.

Where is the Birch Fornt?
I have used PageMaker before starting with Version 6.0.I used an after market book "Teach Yourself PageMaker 6.0 in Twenty Four Hours" to learn it.Unfortunately they did not Publish the same book for 7.0.I had to brush up my PageMaker skills so I thought I would get Adobe's Publication "PageMaker 7.0 Classroom In A Book".To say the book is confusing is an understatement.The book gives you an estimated time that would be suffient to finish each lession usually two hours.All I can say to that is, In your Dreams!Try 3 to 4 hours. There is a set of mysterious fonts one of which is Birch thus the tittle of this review which certainly wasn't on the accompaning CD which is used through out the book.Has anyone ever found this mythical font.I was a good boy and loaded the fonts in Adobe Type Manager off of the CD and starting in lession 2 I didn't have the Birch font.Trusting soul that I am I loaded the CD back in the drive opened ATM and the birch font was nowhere to be found. If anyone has located it please tell me, I am sure it was one of things Adobe put in the book but not on the CD to drive users crazy, and for me that is a short trip.
PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book
I found myself very frustrated using this book.I kept going back as I thought I had missed something. For example, the author claims that all the needed fonts are included on the disk, but they are not, and without them, the examples do not look like they should.It is apparent that the book was not closely edited. REference is made to vertical rules when the action described must be a horizontal ruler!These types of errors make it very difficult for the novice to learn the application.Not that every thing is terrible, but when you spend hours because of omissions or mistakes trying to do what should only take a few minutes, it is frustrating.I do not recommend this book to anyone new to the application becauseunlike some of the reviewers, I do not know where to find the missing fonts.I also do not know enough about the application to know when I've followed the lessons and have gotten bad the results that it is not because I have made a mistake, but because the instructions were incomplete.So I found myself starting over and over again with the hope of getting it right.Frustrating!

Classroom In A Book - still the best series!
If you're the sort who likes to buy software and then use it without consulting the manual you probably own a Mac. That's fine, because that is precisely what the folks at Apple wanted to produce, a computer that needs no manual!Read more

A terrific book for a terrific program.
I've been using Pagemaker since the original beta release by Aldus for the MacIntosh. Still, each revision of Pagemaker forces me to spend time learning the changes. Fortunately, the crew at Adobe knows how to help an old dog learn new tricks. Bad Binding
Get this book but reinforce the binding.It will tend to fall to pieces after a few weeks of use. In other words the "perfect binding" is less than perfect.

A professor's take on this book
This is the kind of book you use if you have time to go through all of the tutorials in order- I use it in a specific Pagemaker class and we go through the Lessons 1 at a time. I wouldn't recommend this as a reference book though- as something to look up specific things and how to do them one at a time.Read more

Helpful, but disappointing
I was disappointed.While the book was well organized and would help people get started, but it failed to answer common problems that I encounterd.Several examples: Great book for windows users!
I picked this book up at the bookstore because it was big, and because unlike all the other books, it had nothing but Windows screenshots.Most of the other ones were 90% Mac pictures, which does the 99% of people who use Windows no good.. :) Good book if you only use Windows!
When I ordered this book, I was excited to see how the author explained PageMaker 7.0.Much to my dismay, she only refers to Windows users.The only mention of Mac is how to convert Mac files into Windows files. I was very disappointed.I think it's probably a great book for the Windows users.However, if you have a Mac, don't waste the money.There are far too many differences between the 2 platforms for this book to be of great value to the Mac user.It's too bad.The author could have really had a great reference had she just taken the time to illustrate both systems.Read more

Good for novices.
This is a fine introduction but your money will be better spent buying Newspaper Production Using Pagemaker 7 by Gordon Woolf, Adobe Pagemaker 6.5 Plus and Adobe Pagemaker Classroom In A Book Pagemaker.

Falls way short.
A great many of the exercises in this book require the electronic templates specially created for the class (apparently this book was written by some Community college folks for one of their classes). NO CD or URL accompanies the book to access the electronic templates leaving readers SOL for some of the exercises. Even at used book prices, it wasn't worth it. ... Read more

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
This is THE LAST Dummies book that I will EVER purchase. Whaddya mean, Internet Edition??? What about desktop publishing, PageMaker's forte?? Another Dummy Hooked by Misleading Title
Yes, I did the same thing as other reviewers, buying it automatically because I wanted a book that gave a better quick start than the Pagemaker documents and because I expected the "Dummies" series to do that. Then I found that ignoring the fine print on the cover was a dumb thing to do.What do they mean, Internet Edition? There is no other edition! Pagemaker 6.5 for Dummies (internet edition)
Disappointed. When I arrived home and read the small print in the title I learned it's an internet edition.I am in a Pagemaker class and need clearer and less convoluted directions than those in the text we use. Where's the CDROM
I've returned 3 books already and just received the 4th still with no CDROM. According to the book, I'm suppose to be using one to work along with the tutorials. Is this an item I have to purchase separately or is the publisher mistakenly forgot to include them on their latest shipping batch?

This book is a great way to learn how to use PageMaker if you are relatively new to this product.The projects in this book are business related and cover a wide range of items (business cards, mailers, flyers, menus, postcards, letterhead, etc).For some of the projects, the book assumes that you have purchased certain Avery brand products to print on.The nice thing is that it tells you the item number of the Avery product that you need. What a great book!
Despite what beginning DTP workers might think, you can't write, edit, and lay out any sort of book in less than a week, and you can't become an expert in less than 90 minutes.However, if you're willing to invest the time to learn how to do things right, this book will teach you everything you need to know. I'm using it both in my high school classes and in some courses I teach at our community college, and find that my students like the writing style, learn from the examples, and finish with a solid grounding in PageMaker techniques. Although Adobe doesn't seem to be promoting this program any more, there are lots of us who still find it useful, and I'm glad there are good books like this one available to teach PageMaker's fundamentals.

Great for the beginner!
Very well written and easy to follow.I found this book to be a fantastic reference if I found myself stuck and I needed answers quickly.Loved the Weekend Tour.
