5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Reference with in depth information!
I researched various Photoshop CS2 instruction books through digtal photographers and photo forums and this is an excellent choice.I have found information in this book that I could not quickly find (needed the information for a project) in two other top rated Photoshop books.I know that I will reference this book often.Easy to use, quick, with color coded page edges and an actual index that leads to the information you need. Well written for those of us who are actuall photographers, and computer users, but new to Photoshop.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great Read
I really love the way this book breaks down a complicated application and gives me ways to use it in the "real" world. I get so tired of Photoshop books that promise to get me "up and running" and then proceed to show me things that are cool, but that no one would ever use. The author seems to understand how to the relate to the real world, and he's given me a lot of ideas on how I can use this application... I would recommend it to any beginners, intermediate users, or anyone just wanting to think outside the box.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners
Photoshop CS2 on Demand by Andy Anderson and Steve Johnson (ISBN 0-78897-3390-0) is a good book for the beginner to intermediate level Photoshop user. The authors of this book have a great way of presenting the material. First, they present the information about any topic on (at most) two facing pages. The reader doesn't have to worry about getting lost or reading long passages in order to go through one of the tools. Second, the information is presented on a step-by-step basis, so the reader can follow along and actually accomplish each step before going onto the next one. Third, the information is presented in a combination of short written passages and effective visuals. After all, Photoshop is a visual program; it only makes sense that the best way to learn and master the program is to do it visually.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best digital textile design book...
This is THE most extraordinary professional digital textile design book I have ever read, and as a matter of fact, besides hundreds and hundreds PhotoShop books on the market today, Adobe PhotoShop for Textile Design by Frederick L. Chipkin, is the only one and only one kind.
5-0 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend Mr. Chipkin's book to textile design professional
I found "Adobe PhotoShop for Textile Design," by Frederick Chipkin informative and well written. After 20 years experience as an designer and stylist, I discovered new and innovative design techniques. I was particularly impressed by Mr. Chipkin's approach to simplifying complex tasks. The book is laid out clearly and concisely, making complex tasks logical to execute and easy to master. There is a wealth of information and techniques that allow the artist to become highly proficient in design creation and processing. The book is a versatile tool; providing the expertise for both the student and the instructor. I have sampled a number of similar books over the years, and I say that I find Mr. Chipkin's book probably the best in the field. I strongly recommend Mr. Chipkin's book to textile design professional, as well as those just entering the field.
5-0 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop for Textile Design
I'm a textile designer who had been hesitant to learn how to use the computer to design pattern since I had been painting and drawing for over 20 years. When faced with first learning Photoshopand trying to figure out how to use it to do textiles, I was overwhelmed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step by step book
Some items in the book may seem very basic but necessary if you want to learn GoLive the right way. For instance when linking - it really is a point and shoot system. I guess once you get the hang of it as the way the book describes the step by step procedure - you'll find similar attributes in MSVisio. This book may seem simple but necessary in its step by step procedure. Each chapter enumerates on each part of the creation of a professional html web page. I recommend this book if you want to learn how to use GoLive the right way, which will in-turn advance you to be more creative with your ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives Up to the Series Title
This is my first venture into the CLIB series and my first venture into serious web designing tools. I needed help fast and I needed a self paced training that would keep me interested. This book comes through on both counts. What's more, it is doing it with style. The only thing missing from the classroom experience is interaction with the teacher.5-0 out of 5 stars Help's You Get Past the GoLive Learning Curve FAST
I am a BIG fan of the Adobe Classroom in a Book (CIB) series.I constantly recommend the books to folks who want to get up to speed on Adobe's software. So ... I come to this review slightly prejudiced. Just wanted to get that out of the way up front.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Maybe 24 Days
Another book where the author is tech savy and assumes the beginner already knows something about photoshop. Many basic steps are left out or assumed and this makes learning and moving on to following chapters almost impossible. Not for teaching yourself if you are new to adobe photoshop.

2-0 out of 5 stars Glaring Omission
As I have been wading through this book for the past week, I have found it more and more difficult to understand. This book's glaring omission in my opinion is its lack of physical graphic images that I can manipulate. We need to see before-and-after examples done with our own hands that explain what she is talking about. The first image that you can download on line is well into chapter 3.I got the most frustrated with the "Cut and Paste" section in chapter 3 which had no photos on line for me to recreate with her, and her explanation of how to Paste was non-existent.It was at this point that I decided to move on to another book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mistake ...
... even after reading the above reviews I decided to give this book a shot. Bad idea. There are a few typos in the book that are annoying, but not really enough to lead you completely astray. Unfortunately that is about as good as the book gets. There is a complete lack of really good visual aids, diagrams, pics, and step by step "how-to's". Carla Rose also will use terminology that isn't explained until later on, making things more confusing. Additionally all the screen shots are in Mac, not Windows, which may or may not effect the examples. This book is not for the beginner. I would look else where. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't explain the how's/why's of Premiere editing
Being new to NLE editing, I bought Premiere Pro and this book.Unfortunately, the books simply tells the user to click this, and drag that. But it does not say WHY the user is doing these actions.I could follow most of the examples in the book, but couldn't figure out how to actually use the program for my own projects! For me, I need an explanation of why I'm supposed to click/drag/type instead of a "march-in-lockstep" and don't ask why mentality!

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Horrible
Adobe should be absolutely ashamed for actually releasing such a piece of literary garbage. This book will definitely teach you some decent basics of PPro if you have a good tolerance for mistakes and don't mind spending a significant amount of time trying to reverse engineer things to try and figure out what the book 'MEANT' to say.

Editorial Review

If you're looking for thorough, at-home training in any Adobe application, the Classroom in a Book series is a good choice. Slow, deliberate pacing is a hallmark of these well-written books. Readers work through a wide variety of projects using professional-quality graphics and fonts (supplied on a companion CD-ROM). Rather than the personal "avoid-the-mistakes-I-made" quality of many how-tos, the series employs a more serious tone befitting books that are recognized as part of the official Adobe certification training.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Look At The Big Picture
As a graphic artist and an instructional designer for 20+ years, I've got to take my hat off to Adobe for providing an educational experience in this book that demonstrates both fundamental and advanced software features. The clear learning objectives for each chapter build knowledge, skill and confidence needed to launch your own project. They assemble a rather robust series of exercises underpinned with all the files you need to complete them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
My first college course in the printing arts utilized a Classroom in a Book-type book. Learning from it (as well as this book) is easy with the step-by-step instructions and illustrations to guide you.
2-0 out of 5 stars Surprising Disappointment
My review of this book echoes those before me insofar as the typos are concerned. I am transitioning over to InDesign from Pagemaker and thank goodness I know Adobe products as well as I do.In the first 25 pages there are over 5 major errors that cost time. They misnumber their example pages (ie: see page 3 but the picture they show is actually of page 2) to telling you the wrong menu to select (Go to type>text wrap, when in reality the text wrap command is under window>text wrap) Since I have a good knowledge of Adobe, I can overcome this, but if you are not mostly familiar with adobe's interfaces through photoshop, pagemaker, etc, this IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU. I love a lot of the CIB books too, but this one is a miserable experience.Hope they get a new editor before they lose more readers. Plus, once you open the classwork CD you can't return the book. Don't make my mistake! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great concept, poorly edited
Ok, I saw this book and thought it would be great. For $50 I figured not a bad investment, get a finished product at the end.I encountered many, many issues in this book! Many of the tutorials were wrong, and they didn't seem to follow the previous steps.Tracks out of place, forgot to tell you to do one thing, mispelled words, etc.I emailed the publisher and they were very gracious, offered me either another product or a refund.I took the refund. It's too bad too, this book had potential. And, I see these same issues crop up in the Premiere Pro book by Baker as well.Maybe someone should offer them the "Editing Text for Dummies"!

This book had not arrived when I fled Katrina Hurricane

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to start with Photoshop !
It is the first time I spend the time writing a review for a book on amazon. I decided to do it for TYV Photoshop Elements because of its excellent quality. I tried a few other Photoshop books before and couldn't go further than page 30 because text is definitely not adequate to teach you how to use a software dedicated to imaging. This book is just perfect for beginners like me who want to understand how the various functionalities of the software can be used to realize what they want. You get a double page per function, very clear and precise, easy to read and to understand. Along with this one, I bought The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 2 (that I have not started yet) to get into the hairy details...

3-0 out of 5 stars Fast, Visual Guide
Photoelements 2 is a powerful, complex program that is far from intuitive to use.Abode's manual lists the functions of the program but provides little advice as to when to use each function - and this is needed.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to any artist and Photoshop users collection.
If like me you don't know anyone personally who happens to be a great artist and expert Photoshop user at the same time then you'll find a friend in this book.I've learned a few tips and it's great to know I've got them from such accomplished talent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peek Over The Shoulder Of World-Class Artists
If you are a traditional artist considering incorporating your computer into your artistic repertoire, this book is a great starting point. Even if you have already discovered how helpful your computer is for creating artwork, you will find the techniques in this book will extend your digital skills. Although Adobe Photoshop is widely considered the industry standard in professional image editing and photo retouching software, this book is about using Photoshop as an art medium. In this book, part of the O'Reilly Designer's Notebook series, you will learn from and be inspired by nine world-class French artists who used Photoshop to create the featured artwork.
5-0 out of 5 stars A winner for Right Brain Artists
Take nine world class French digital artists, add Photoshop, a dash of good writing and a heady helping of creativity and you have "Illustrations with Photoshop". As a digital artist, I was intrigued by the title though suspicious. I was an Illustrator devotee but found limitations when it came to colorization. Photoshop is the means to unbelievable eye-poppin'illustrations. I've found most how-to design books to be bland, dry, deserts of left brain techno-babble. I was surprised to discover a full-color right brain revival of design and effect. The book itself is well designed and flows well over the glossy pages with artist notes and lots of pleasing images devoid of stark techno-structure. There is enough variety of art styles represented that it will appeal to most creatively inclined readers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Photoshop Book
This book is boring and serves as a way for the author to showcase his artsy-fartsy photoshopped images.I don't find them beautiful at all as other reviewers have mentioned. They are quite ugly to be frank. The how-to part is treacherously, butchered and sandwiched between his horrendous "ah-mmm", "spiritual" reflections/bs on his image and the how-to on creating this image.Huh?Why would I want to create something that he already done myself? This book is awful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
The Art of Photoshop is an awesome idea and reference book. Highly recommend!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, "off the beaten path" Photoshop book
I have a library of Photoshop books and there are two main types- those that deal with how to use Photoshop with no identified purpose in mind (nothing wrong with that) and Photoshop books for the digital photographer which can teach you how to get rid of blemishes or a blown out sky, etc (nothing wrong here either). In many of the latter type of Photoshop books there are sections on manipulating your photos to create art, however, the end result very much maintains the basic identity of the original photo. With The Art of Photoshop we have a very rare book, a book whose goal is to inspire photoshophers to create art, as you would see in an art gallery, with the software. Even if you are not inspired with Mr. Giordan's art, he suceeds in teaching you the tools to go create your own art. Differing from other books that touch upon Photoshop art (via manipulation of your digital photo), this book's end products do not necessairily have a direct relationship with the starting photograph(s) and sources, thus the term "art". As in any art gallery, there is some "art" that Mr. Giordan has created that I don't really care for and could be made fun of such as the burning baby example given in another review. By the way, Mr. Giordan makes it clear it is not actually meant to be a burning baby. Getting back to the book. even if I did not care for some of the art created, I still found it very valuable to learn how the art was created. Although Photoshop version CS2 was not covered much at all, still, this was an aspect of Photoshop use I had not seen much about at all- the creation of art, not just manipulating my photographs with filters to give it a Van Gogh look or whatever. If you would really like to create original art with Photoshop and not just merely manipulate your photographs with filters and such, this book is really worth a look. It has taught me techniques that I can use to create artwork that is appealing to me and I think that was the goal of the book in the first place- not as a showcase for Mr. Giordan's art, but to show the capabilities Photoshop has for creating art and this book magnificently teaches how to tap into those capabilities. I agree that if you are not interested in creating art with Photoshop this is not the book for you, however, if you are, GET THIS BOOK! It is a rare type of Photoshop book. ... Read more

I just read two lessons, and between page 109-page 111, there are a few paragraphs on "Creating evenly spaced buttons for a web page". Every time I tried to drag the styles on to view inside ImageReady, the style is applied to the while view swallowing EVERY button in the view. I don't know whether the editors tested the instructions thoroughly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This book provides a do-it-yourself training program for Adobe Photoshop. It provides step-by-step instructions that will help you explore and learn to use the main features of Photoshop. Each lesson begins with an overview of the skills you will learn, and an estimate of the time it will take to complete the lesson.Following that are the instructions that guide you towards completing the assigned tasks to the artwork contained on the accompanying CD-ROM.At the end of every chapter is a short list of review questions and answers.2-0 out of 5 stars An average addition to the Photoshop manual
Don't expect to pass the ACE [Adobe Certified Expert] exam with this book alone, unless you are a seasoned Photoshop guru.I studied this book cover to cover and memorized all the lessons in the back of each chapter, and I only passed the ACE exam by a handful of questions [I got a 78%].Don't get me wrong, this book is an OK addition to the library as a supplement to the Photoshop 5.5 manual, but it is not as effective at teaching the more useful techniques.I prefer the "Photoshop WOW! Book" style - densely packed with nothing but page after page of useful tips, tricks, how-to's, and techiniques of the masters. This is not that book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not usefull
This book containes lots of pretty pictures but not a lot of helpful information on the "how to" details for someone new to the process.

1-0 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself VISUALLY Photoshop Elements 4 (Teach Yourself Visually)
It was hard to use and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Illustrations than Three Other Books.
The 'Visual' books are probably the most heavily illustrated books available on ny subject. This one, like the others has literally hundreds of color images the illustrate what they are tying to teach far batter than endless lines of text. This is particularly true of something like Photoshop which is basically a software packages that works with images. The images are a mix of color screen shots directly off of the computer's monitor and drawings specially made for this book that illustate some particular point.
