5-0 out of 5 stars great way to learn compositing in general
This book is a great intoduction into the field of Digital Compositing in general. If you already know the basics of After Effects and want to learn how to see and handle live-action footage for visual effects, this is your ultimate guide. Mark Christiansen talks, of course, a lot about the After Effects application (e.g. how to optimize the interface and your personal workflow). But there are also chapters that cover more general topics like how to match a virtual 3D camera to a real film camera, the differences between lens blur and computer generated blur, how to see and recreate light and color situations in a shot, Greenscreen Keying, Rotoscoping, specifics about working with high dynamic range images like scanned film footage and so on. I've also read parts of the famous book "The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" by Ron Brinkman, which covers a lot of simmilar issues. While Brinkman goes into a lot more theoretical details but doesn't cover specific software solutions, Christiansen matches a perfect combination between general theorie and practical application. You learn how to see images - but also how to directly manipulate them in After Effects. But a lot of the knowledge that is shown in this book, could also be used when working with other compositing systems - so it's really worth reading if you already work with After Effects, even if you want to migrate to a different software one day. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn GL, not HTML
I want to address an issue that I have heard from many who have used this book. THIS IS NOT A GUIDE TO WEB DESIGN AND HTML! This book assumes that you understand the fundamentals of HTML and basic web design. This book teaches you how to use the features in GoLive, which are just easy buttons for basic HTML and CSS coding. If you want to learn how to make web pages, you will need to also buy a book on HTML, and probably CSS. Once you know these fundamentals, GoLive is a GREAT tool to use to make them all come together. This book explains nearly every tool in GoLive and briefly explains their partner HTML coding. This book teaches you all the neat features that GoLive has that will easily create complicated HTML codes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but really is like a classroom...
Kind of tedious but effective, this book gets you working on a weird sample web site at first ("Virtech U. The School of the Future", or something) in a series of lessons that take seem to drag on and on and get you itching to work on your bands web site. But it really does give you a good idea of how the tools, windows and palettes work. It's definitely better than a "for dummies" book (not as dumb), but it's still pretty easy to wrap your mind around. Out of all the books I've been through for CS2, this one is by far the most comprehensive, and I'd recommend the Adobe books over any others. Very solid and accurate information, straight from the source. Thank You.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only the Basics
We purchased the GoLive software because it promised to do "everything" we could possibly want for our business website... we purchased the GoLive book because we needed help figuring out how to make this non-user-friendly software fufill its promises. The book only covers the simplest of web designs and does NOT go into detail regarding anything that we require. We were very disappointed.I would only recommend this book or software to those who want a very simple, very generic website. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive, Complete, Erudite, wonderful
I first learned photoshop from an earlier edition of this book. Throughout its many editions it's remained among the very best. At a time when Photoshop is becoming more and more daunting to learn and keep-up-with, and when many of the books therefore present a more simplistic, or at least restrictive, approach to the subject, and where hype is beginning to dominate the field, it's a pleasure to find this solid, authorative treatise continuing to shine. It's not an easy read--one of these one page per thought books--but it's got an awful lot of great information in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Requiem for the Best
This book, and its predecessors for each iteration of Photoshop, are amongst the finest of the many instructional manuals on the software. This is because the book is not only comprehensive, but provides highly effective tutorials. These tutorials start with an image on the accompanying CD and lead the reader to modify that image step by step to a final image.Because of my admiration, I was shocked to read in the introduction that this was to be the last in the series. We will have to find our way through future Photoshop versions through other means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth but very clear and logical explainations
I have been using Photoshop since 1992, so I knew it fairly well before I bought this book, but my experience was mainly in graphical design. I am now focusing on photography. I have read a lot of confusing and conflicting advice on how to use Photoshop to get the most out of your photos and have an efficient "workflow", so I wanted a book to clear things up for me. I bought this based on several published recommendations. I have worked my way about 2/3rd through it and I have found it to be excellent in all respects. It's not a book for someone who wants a quick once-over, but if you want to really become an expert with Photoshop for photography, this book is great. It is detailed but interesting and very well written, with clear and detailed walk-throughs. It would make an excellent course text and contains guidance thereto. I love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So logical, this book should have been done years ago.
Can you sign your name with a bar of soap?Of course not!So, why are you trying to paint digital images with a mouse?A pen tablet and a program like Photoshop or Corel Painter are the only sensibletools for those times when you're creating an image from scratch or doing brush-oriented retouching or digital airbrushing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book
This is a great book. As both a Graphic Designer and an Illusrtator, I stradle the fence between commercial and traditional art often. This book has helped me incorporate my traditional painting style into a form I could not accomplish before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for artists!
As a long-time colleague of Cher's, I have the utmost respect for the dedication with which she crafts her books. Her "Painter WOW! Book" is the industry standard for anyone wanting to learn Painter-- with art collected from the best Painter experts around the world. Now with this "Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book," Cher has taken us into her working studio, to share her own tips and techniques. There are lessons for every level of artist and digital expertise-- all illustrated with her beautiful work. Whether or not you can arrange to take one of Cher's wonderful classes or workshops, this book will provide you with hours of lessons from one of the pioneers who helped develop the world of digital painting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learnt invalueable lessons from this book.
Photoshop Elements 4.0 may not be as feature rich as Photoshop CS. But it packs more than enough punch to stand on its own. Scott Kelby clearly illustates this point in this book. The organization of this book is very helpful to jump specifically to a particular technique and use them. The teach by example model is very effective. A must have reference for anyone using Photoshop Elements 4.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I was extremely impressed with this book! You can go directly to the chapter you are interested in, but I read it cover-to-cover to not miss anything.Beautiful, clear illustrations of exactly what you need to do for all kinds of photo modifications, including stuff I would never have thought possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
Don't be scared away from buying this book because some reviewers here say, "It's not for beginners."True, it doesn't take you through the product menu by menu and tell you what each little tool or piece of functionality does. But if you want to learn the basics of photo editing (anything more advanced than the auto fix options)in Photoshop Elements 4, this is definitely a good book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true manual for CS2
If you have Photoshop you simply must have this book. It is one of the finest books on a using a complex piece of software I have ever bought. If you buy no other manual for Photoshop this is the one you should buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars instantly dissapointed...
I produce motion graphics with Adobe After Effects, and have constantly run into the problem that on-line tutorials start with preparing or creating files in Photoshop first, then bringing those files into After Effects for manipulation. When I tell people I am a videographer, so many say "oh, you must be great with Photoshop then", so finally, I decided to take the plunge and try to learn this program.
4-0 out of 5 stars No CD???

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, not for beginners
I have to agree with an earlier reviewer that indicated that this is not for beginners.I have 2 years of experience with video editing (Final Cut) and Photoshop CS/CS2, and the knowledge that using those tools gave me prepared me to use this book.I'm not sure that ideas such as layers, timelines, compositions, effects, etc. would have made sense to me without that prior knowledge.
2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for beginners
Before I purchased this book, I read the premier 2.0 classroom in a book and I love the book.It explains almost everything you need to know about using premier pro. So after reading premier pro classroom in a book I readily bought the AE 7 classroom in a book thinking that by reading this book I could gain a lot of knowledge as I did with premier pro. However, to my surprise it did not helped me a lot. Yes, it has tutorials for you to follow but it does not explain to you why you have to do this and why not to do this.It doesn't have any chapter about the features of AE 7 not like premier pro classroom in the book. The first chapter you will go directly to a tutorial it show you steps to follow however after finishing the tutorial you will not learn much so after reading chapter 9 I stopped readingbecause it just a waste of time to me as a beginner of AE. However, if you already using after effects and just upgrading to AE 7 then this book will help you because you already have an idea how AE works. If you are still a beginner, I suggest go to lynda.com and get the cd after effects 7 essential training. You won't regret you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great beginning book
I have have AE Pro 6 on my editing pc for 2 years now. Using it for s few films i did. I found it very difficult to learn. Flash forward I upgrade to AE7 pro and love it! I got this book at the same time and its been my bible. Very easy to follow and great usable tutorials. I highly recommend this book for new AE users! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for all skill levels
First let me start off by saying that I am far from a Photoshop beginner so I am cautious when choosing a book, but this one didn't disappoint. I was introduced to many tricks and tips or "Finishing Touches"... such as (patterns, custom brushes, burned edges, selective blurring and delivery) among others that have recently added that extra "pop" to my photos. I noticed in the other reviews that people are disappointed with the amount of "border effects" but what they are forgetting is Photoshop is a program that produces the best results with experimentation. Dave isn't trying to create clones (not the stamp), but is giving us insight in how the pros create such stunning imagery.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book stays near my desk!
Another great reference book from Dave Cross. This one will be well-thumbed before it's retired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great if you are Good
Ok, I'm not really out to toot my own horn here, but I was already very good at photoshop before I got this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Illustrations
What makes this book so useful is the preponderance of excellent illustrations! This book very clearly illustrates where the user should focus on the Elements' tool bars, option bars, menues, screens, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bible for the bumbling novice
First I need to give a nod to "Gunny", the reviewer who convinced me to purchase this book: Thank you! This is truly the best Illustrator guide available for beginners, who need to find their painful path through the inscrutable thicket of Illustrator, who need to get a graphic project done, quickly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, As Usual
Visual Quick Start Guides and I were introduced in college. Each one I have used is: supremely instructive, light to nonexistent on self absorbed asides (a blessed relief), and meaty...very meaty. The paper isn't glossy, the images aren't in color, you get no adorable photos of the author with their children frolicking on the sands of Southern California. But you get information about how to use Adobe products (and anything else you want to tackle) so that you, in your miserable Midwestern hovel, far from the smiling shores of the Pacific rim, can accomplish your tasks for your demanding and sniffy clients and get paid, and not go to the poor house! Tres cool, no?

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every $.01
I have purchased too many Photoshop books! If I had purchased this first, it would have been my only one. Very clear and concise explainations!Nice work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend
This is a truly excellent CS2 book - Willmore explains the why - behind the how to many of the critical processes necessary for understanding CS2.I highly recommend this book, it is the best overall CS2 book on the market period.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Photoshop Book Available
A book is only as good as it's author and Mr. Willmore is an incredibly gifted writer in that he is able to explain WHY different techniques are used in Photoshop rather than simply listing a clinical step-by-step HOW-TO, as most of the Photoshop cookbooks out there do. This ultimately leads the reader to a much better understanding of the program and the tools that it offers the digital artist. The so-called telephone-book-thick "bibles" that are offered up for every software suite under the sun are nothing more than 'do this, do that, arrive at this' lists of instructions; they do very little in the way actually explaining WHY you would want to use a certain filter here, or adjustment layer there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Huges Help with Acorbat 7.0
I have been using Acrobat for projects since version 3.0.I've also bought a number of books on all these versions. This particular book is one of the best because it gives a specific problem or situation and then gives you specific instructions. No generalizations, just instructions.I found this approach very helpful with a last minute project and can see where it would have so many useful applications.Even for an experienced user of Acrobat, I found lots of nifty shortcuts that will make my Acrobat life better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Beginner, Very Helpful for the Novice
Adobe Acrobat is a powerful program, capable of many things. In this book 150 of the best of thest tips and tricks are described in clear and easy language and illustrations using primarily screen shots that clearly show what should be done.

The product is a very good one but difficult to learn, I have spent much time in self help. The documentation is difficult to use and to follow.I had to separately purchase an instruction book.Particularly confusing is how it organizes the photo and the methods to categorize, tabing, collections, etc. After getting the hang of it, editing photos is really fun, and the results are great. Printing and emailing is rather simple.Good program, Thumbs Up.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read.
I struggled with Photoshop Elements 4 until I found Deke McClelland's Photoshop Elements 4 one-on-one.His training methods are well designed and will lead you to an understanding of the power of Photoshop Elements 4 I never imagined. The video is better than first class and the book is written in a very clear way that leads the student on a guided descovery of Elements 4.I asked my local camera store for help and they promised something in the future. When I cruised through Amazon.com and read other reviews of this book I simply took a chance and bought it.Wow, what a wonderful surprise.Deke won't let you down.Paul

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
I absolutely loved this book.I have tried many of the self-teach books out there for other products and I have not found one that is as well written and easy to follow as this one. Before I purchased Photo Shop Elements 4.0, I knew nothing....zip.....nada about the program and how it worked.I was so impressed with what you can do with this software and the instructional training manual was excellent.I would highly recommend it for anyone who is new to this product or for anyone who wants to take their photo editing to the next level. It's pretty amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Way to Get Familiar with Elements 4.0
I am still using this manual. So far, I do like it. What I like best are the detailed instructions on the Organizer segment of the program. I find that I am much more adept at keeping track of the pictures I take. I would never have done as well on my own by just "exploring" the program by trial and error. The Classroom book excels here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, platform shouldn't bring down rating
I thought this book was well written and served me well when learning this incredible program. I can't see how people can rate this book with a one-star because the software isn't on the platform that they use...what has that got to do with learning the software using this book? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Really truly teaches you to use Illustrator
I loved this book from the moment I saw it.It is visually very pleasing to look at, and when you're reading a book that's over 500 pages, how it looks really matters. The page layout is very clean, and the readability of this book is very high. One of the sections I appreciated was a breakdown by genre of use, such as "graphic designer," "package design," or "fashion and apparel design," that directs you to the chapters that would be most helpful to you. This book is good because he teaches you to actually use Illustrator in a functional manner rather than detailing every item of every possible submenu.Additionaly, you learn the conceptual why and then the how-to.There are "Featured Match-Ups" that clarify the differences and similarities between two similar tools, and for more complex features, such as 3D Revolve, there are excersizes to better demonstrate the tools.Overall, this is a really good tool to get you started in Illustrator, and has enough explanations that the intermediate user can benefit from reading it too. And finally, there is an appendix on converting from FreeHand to Illustrator, which, though not one of my needs, is faily good sized for those that are looking for help in that area. This book is a very complete overview of the whole Illustrator CS2 package and will have you actually accomplishing what you want to in the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST HAVE reference on Illustrator CS2
When those of us who are experts in Illustrator run into a problem, Mordy Golding is often the person we go to for help. Now you too can turn to Mordy for help by keeping the Real Wolrd Adobe Illustrator CS2 book next to your computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best graphics computer manual format I've encountered yet!
I just took Mordy's class at ADIM9 and got his book. I have to say it's the best book for my needs I've seen, and I am a very experienced consumer of graphics tech manuals. I'm only about 1/3 through it, but my skipping ahead makes me believe the rest of the book has the same format: if you need a step-by-step project based book, this may not be the book for you. But, if, however, you want a very complete, advanced overview that builds knowledge upon knowlege from-the-ground-up of how this works for the professional, this is the book for you. I've been using Illustrator professionally for about four years and I was getting by but not always knowing the quickest way to do things. This book will save me SO MUCH TIME! Thank you Mordy and PeachPit Press! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Reference for InDesign CS2
Real World InDesign CS2 is what the users manual should be.For example, It covers Tables which only appear in the online help for InDesign CS2. The users manual only makes reference to See the Help files.Like the previous Real World InDesign texts it is well written, easy to understand, and covers all of the functions of the software. From creating an initial layout to color management to Printing the final project Real World InDesign CS2 is the text to have. I would recommend Real World InDesign CS2 to both Novices and long-time users of InDesign. It is the one book you will refer to time and again for problem solving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest InDesign desk refererence
The cover states that all features of the application are covered, and I can't claim to have discovered a gap. Each author (Kvern and Blatner) offers a deep perspective, and when they differ with one another, they say so. Thus the user gets two keen insights rather than themonolithic pronouncements so common in software books. This empowers the reader: a goal I try to achieve in my software classes. As I try to give my students enough information and methodology to make their own workflow decisions, this book does likewise. That is why I recommend this volume in my classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
This is indeed a great book for both beginning and experienced photoshop users. Although it helps to get the "Photoshop CS2 One-on-one" combined with it if you're just starting out, but the author still gives a tutorial on the basics for those of you who are still a tad green.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners...
I'm in the game industry, and this book is right on in its techniques, and tutorials! This guy knows what he's talking about, and his easy to follow tutorials are great. Beware, this book is more for begginers, showing you the basics. I do wish he had gotten a little more into advanced technique in photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for game artists!
Luke Ahearn has done an impeccable job of compiling so much information into a concise, thorough and informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go further in describing the sharpening process.
Two powerful new titles are top picks which stand out from the computer books on the market. Bruce Fraser's REAL WORLD IMAGE SHARPENING WITH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS2: INDUSTRIAL-STRENGTH PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES goes beyond more general discussions of sharpening tools to pinpoint the kind of sharpening each image needs, and how to use Photoshop CS2's many tools to achieve perfection. Learn the range of these tools, their differences in application, and how to sharpen selectively in a book which comes form an internationally recognized authority on digital imaging and color image reproduction. Chapters assume a basic grounding in Photoshop but go further in describing the sharpening process.
5-0 out of 5 stars In Focus
There are plenty of books by Photoshop gurus that explain the software's tone and color controls and most users can usually master these functions if they make a serious effort. But one function that always seems rather inexact is the detail function, as exemplified by the sharpening tools. This still seems to be a rather hit or miss proposition, and there has long been a need for more detailed instruction on this function.Fraser takes the function on, and even if you don't agree with all his recommendations, this book should clarify what sharpening is about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book nicely compiles all of the information regarding multi-stage sharpening workflows Mr. Fraser has previously published in various articles over the years. If you've never read any of them, then this is a definite must buy. If you've read all of them, you won't find a lot of new information here aside from the highly welcome detailed explanation of CS2's Smart Sharpen filter. Adobe's own documentation has always been pretty ambiguous as to what all the little checkboxes and sliders do in the new dialog.
