Preserving the art of monochrome
Film photographers have long savored black-and-white photography for its stark alternative to realism, and the stripped down, minimalistic approach to creating an image.Digital photography threatened to push black-and-white photography to extinction, but, thankfully, artists like Hamilton have preserved the spirit of the medium and extended it through the use of Adobe's flagship image editor.

Nice Fine Art Book
This is a very nice fine art photography book dealing with black and white. The author is obviously very well versed in Adobe Photoshop and his expertise is evident through his writing. The inforamtion is well presented and clearly stated. The images are well done and have a broad appeal to both a professional and amateur.

This is the book I've been looking for!!!
I've been using Premiere Elements for about a month.Until yesterday I've been slogging through the user manual and the help screens.I struggled to do the very basics--creatung slide shows, capturing video and gluing clips together, saving the output to DVD.Nothing fancy at all.
Practical applications of a powerful program
I don't care what anyone says -- sometimes reading the manual is just too painful.Not that Adobe's manual is bad, it's just... dry, and doesn't really show you practical applications of the program's features..The "Premiere Elements 2 In A Snap" book makes learning Premiere Elements' ins and outs fun, and does it in a way that you don't have to weed through endless paragraphs to figure out what needs to be done.

Awesome InDesign Training Manual!
This book is phenomenal! After purchasing several different manuals covering the various main components of Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2 and GoLive CS2) I found myself wishing that Lynda.com published a Hands-On Training book for every component of CS2. The combination of Brian Wood's clear writing style and the included bonus exercises and demo movies made me feel like I had my own personal InDesign instructor right beside me.Everyone who wants to learn InDesign from the comfort of their own desk should have a copy of this book. I highly recommend it!

Too slow
I have bought linda books in the past and they are very good beacuse of the inclusion of quicktime movies and excersises. But I find this book too slow. The fact that you have to be 4 chapters to be able to put text in the document it's a drawback. To spend 3 chapters to tell you how to create a guide, I think it's for retards or 6th grade students. I regret spending the money on the book. I think I 'll try the Classroom in a Book CS2 since I had the previus CS1 that was good. I would not recomended for classroom beacause students will get bored. But it's a good option for non-designer people.

Training for Indesign CS2
I work for an architect firm in which we used the old Pagemaker for doing our marketing and proposals brochures.We upgraded to Indesign CS2.I have never had any formal training in using Pagemaker or any marketing software.I simply edited over previous brochures to launch my new projects.So I really felt overwhelmed when I first opened the software and didn't know where to begin.I went to a large book store and took off the shelf every training book I could find on learning InDesign CS2. There were a couple dozen books out there.I choose this book because I could relate to it.It explains very clearly everything you need to know to get started using it.It has pictures or diagrams on just about every page showing you exactly where to go and how to do what they are explaining.Then you are directed to a practice exercise or video (on the training disk which comes with the book) to reinforce what you have learned.In my opinion if you are "green" to this software this is the best book for the average lay person.I even tried taking an 8 week class on InDesign CS2 which used the Adobe "Classroom In A Book".I ended up dropping the class because I thought I could learn more efficiently on my own using this book.I can't tell you exactly why but I did not like Adobe's Classroom In a Book as well as Brian Wood's Hands-On Training. ... For video?
First of all I kind of expect a touch of sense in graphics and layout when the book treats the subject Photoshop. The interface reminds me of a Spanish course book I had in 8th grade wich also made me puke.
Don't bother
With the tons of Photoshop books out there is one should be at the bottom of the list or not on the list at all.Being a veteran photoshop user and having bought quite a few PS books in the past this one is the worst I've come across.I bought this thinking it would cover information for using PS for video that other books hadn't covered.Not only was the information in this book incredibly basic it was also very hard to read. ... Typical Kelby
This is yet another book from the man who is trying to take over Photoshop with his "Photoshop Professionals" organization.
Many Unanswered Questions
I read the book cover to cover while using it as a companion tutor to an on line dslr course. I found many of the steps not complete. I had basic questions on basic elements of PSE 3.0 and didn't find any mention of them in the book or index. I was left "wanting" for my answers on the basic of uses in Organizer and Editor.

Wowzer, wowzer!
What a great book!What separates this book from all the others is the downloaded pictures that you work with as you make your way through the book.I kept the pictures in their chapter folders and put them in a folder called Elements 3: 50 Cool Ways.Then after practicing with them, when Adobe asked me if I wanted to save changes, I said no - so I could practice again and again.I must be slow because I have needed to practice them again.Thanks Dave, for a wonderful book.Will you be doing the same for Elements 4?

AWESOME
This is the most user friendly book that I have ever held in my hands. The great thing about this book is that Dave works with you one on one by having you download the pictures that are the examples in the book! This way you work on the same picture step by step and you can see what your picture should look like through the edit process. This book is very FUN and INFORMATIONAL! Buy it you won't be sorry!!! And you will do things with this program that you didn't know you personally could do!!!

Light hearted, useful, and informative
This book is not only a pleasure to read, it also was superbly reproduced and technically accurate (not all books are!). Dave Huss goes the extra mile to provide an excellent selection of real world (read: useful) tutorials that cover in detail how to retouch and correct common digital photography problems (color cast, wrinkle removal, panorama assembly, red eye, perspective correction). It also covers common challenges associated with managing digital photo libraries (album assembly, photo cataloging, image management). Book is more for Beginners
This book was somewhat of a let down for me since I thought it would focus more on intermediate/advanced digital character design techniques using Photoshop CS. Most of the book is aimed for the beginner (or pre-beginner). However there are a few usefully chapters near the end for more advance graphic professionals.

Good book for digital painting
Ive done just about everything else with photoshop and wanted a good book on digital painting so I could use my traditional art skills in that way.Its a good amount of content for the price and it has some really nice tips on creating your own brushes.The tutorials are pretty much step by step, although a little more info would have been nice.A lot of the process depends on your own ability and experience with the pen and tablet.So, overall I'd say its a good resource.

Take a Class in Digital Character Painting and Design
This is one of the best books on digital painting and character design that I have found. Most computer painting books deal with digital filters and special effects but this book is truly like taking a class in digital character painting with Adobe Photoshop CS.

Now i want all my books to be like this
One of the best books on software that i ever bought. I've been working with GoLive for quite a while now and just can't believe how many useful things i didn't know about it yet. So many shortcuts that enhance productivity, so many features that i paid too little attention to.

Adobe offers GoLive as a powerful tool to build pages in a website. It is complicated enough that the authors of this book present 200 tips, to perform common and useful tasks.
A Must Read for All GoLive Users
I have been using GoLive since the Cyberstudio days, and this book STILL florred me on how much useful information it contained. Everything from the "Well duh! I can't believe I didn't know that" to the "WOW" tips are in here.

Teach Yourself Illustrator
If you don't have the time or the money to take a lengthy class on Adobe Illustrator, just buy this book.There are a lot of instructional books out there for Illustrator and other Adobe programs, but this is by far the best and most concise.It includes a CD with lessons and images, and if you start at the beginning and plow through it, you'll learn Illustrator competently enough to get you up and running with the program.

an excellent tutorial for intermediate Illustrator users
I had some Illustrator experience before picking up this book, which is important: this gives you the basics and tells you what to do when you're beyond the basic level. The author doesn't just tell you what to do, but WHY to do it. The book is full of lesson plans covering a broad scope of Illustrator functionality, for example how to use the "divide" command to create nice abstract graphics effects. Similarly, I never really had a good grasp of the usefulness of blends and gradient meshes before completing the lessons. I also got a taste of functions that I don't often use, such as custom brushes and 3D effects. I might not use them more often in the future, but if I ever need them, it's nice to know they exist.

VERY NEW to Illustrator .......but not anymore!
I LOVE this book. I got this one as a gift in pdf format & ended up buying CS2 hardcopy one.
Illustrator is NOT Photoshop...
This book (and it's many previous editions... which are less expensive, and nearly identical, except for adding "CS" to the title)... are a good way to learn some fundamental AI techniques. Don't let the negative rant by the Photoshop enthusiast (preceeding this post) totally turn you off to the book.

Not for Newbies
Like everyone else who rated this book, I would've given it five stars for all the stated reasons if I had been using Photoshop for a year or so.
I am having fun with this book
There are hundreds of third party books for Photoshop, but this is one of the most gorgeous looking I have seen. It is in full color and the Photoshop artwork is inspiring. There are 61 step-by-step projects designed to teach you how to achieve interesting effects from photos. Flipping through the pages makes you just want to start right in and try some.
Haven't put it down since I got it...
This is a fantastic book if you like to take a more painterly approach with your photos.The watercolor recipe is worth the price of the book alone.

A whole lot of content... not sure how much of it is good though
This book teaches you how to do "FUN AND ZANY WACKY PHOTOSHOP TRICKS." There's a couple good ones. But anyone who is paying 800 dollars for a piece of software isn't going to buy a book to learn how to make cool watery text. Well, maybe they are.

I bought this book a year ago.I did manage to successfully complete certain tasks but in my opinion, he uses too many shortcuts.Obviously this book wouldn't be for a beginner.His sense of humor is dry and wasn't needed.This book would have been slightly better if a CD were included as well as a place to download the images he used so that we may practice on them.

Learn a ton in a short time
Photoshop has a very steep learning curve.The depth of the program is daunting.While I'm no guru on this program - yet - I've found that just diving right in and doing some of the more involved applications of the program exposes you to the maximum amount of features and you learn much more in much less time.With this book, you can do some very simple things, or jump into some of the more complex, such as creating "from scratch" illustrations.Everything is presented with beautiful, full color illustrations of every step, including menu examples and keyboard shortcuts.This book is very good for the beginner, but can also be a valuable resource for the more experienced user, and can help you to become your own in-house Photoshop innovator. ... Photoshop CS2 RAW
I must admit, I took a long time switching to digital for photo work, and then I thought I was set. It appears that not only do a I have to master the camera for settings, but in those instances where the money talks, I have to learn about RAW format rather than the high res JPG format I thought was dealing me a good deal.
Too much graphic art - too little substance
In the field of digital photography, capturing and developing "RAW" files is a hot topic, largely because this is usually the route to the highest image quality attainable.The subject can be a bit opaque because each manufacturer mechanizes in-camera RAW files differently.Also, there are many different RAW converters (software packages for developing the RAW files into optimized images) from both the camera manufacturers and third parties.One of the most popular RAW converters is Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), originally released by Adobe as a plug-in for Photoshop 7 and Photoshop Elements, and now integrated into both products.
A nice introduction to RAW
I bought this book after reading the other 5-star reviews, so I thought Wow! This must be it! Well, it's almost 'it'. The book gives a well-written and useful explanation of what RAW is all about, and also shows some good examples of what you can do with RAW. It also helps you to decide when to shoot in RAW or when you'd better just switch to JPG.
