5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely useful and worthwhile
if motion graphics is your thing, this is a fantastic resource. Nobody more clearly explains the basic concepts of layering, nesting, timelines, footage, transformations, masks, precomposing, stencils, track mattes, transfer modes, keyframes, rendering, resolutions, plugins, working with audio, and much more.

I'm one of those people who buys every software book on the market. I've looked at lots of books on PDF. This is the best yet. It's practical and tells me how to avoid making the most common mistakes in creating a PDF. I wish the rest of my colleagues would read this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book, but doesn't reflect Premiere Elements 2.0
I bought this book because I found the Premiere Elements user guide less than helpful.Adobe Premiere Elements for Dummies does contain a lot of helpful information and tips, but my impression is that I'll need to read the book cover to cover rather than using it as a reference guide.Be aware that this book's screen shots do not reflect Premiere Elements 2.0.I don't know how different 2.0 is from previous versions, but this was a source of frustration for me when I was trying to find out how to "single step" through a clip.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book Adobe should have Written!
I have been working with Adobe Elements for about 6 months now. I started with Adobe's tutorial and then their "Classroom in a Book" series and have created numerous multi hour DVD's from old VHS video I have. As with most books from the makers of software, they leave a lot of how too stuff out, so I started to look elsewhere for more info on how to use all of the great things in Elements. I saw this book and it's rating so I figured I'd give it a try. For the $16 it cost, even if I learned just two new helpful things it would be worth the money. Never having read any other ".... For Dummies" book I had no Idea what to expect.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great advice
This book is just what I needed.I had just acquired the Premiere Elements Program and understood the very basics from the anemic book that comes with the program, and the DVD that introduces the program.Premiere Elements for Dummies took me to the details needed in putting together projects, editing the clips, adding the soundtrack and music, and getting it to disc.I read other books, and this was the best one - not too basic, not too detailed or advanced. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Practical Book
Adobe InDesign CS@ Work by Cate Brosseau Indiano (ISBN 0-672-32802-X) is a great resource for someone like myself. InDesign is the one application in the Creative Suite that I have the least experience. That said, the first and third chapters of the book seems unnecessary. It first tries to convince you of the advantages of InDesign and chances are if you are reading the book, you have already purchased the application. The third chapter deals with converting from PageMaker or Quark - again a decision that has already been made.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book serves great for beginners but also as a "refresher" for those who have been using InDesign already. Great examples, and done in a professional matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you Need To Know in a Single Book
This isn't a book just about Photoshop Elements, there are plenty of books like that. This book teaches you how to improve the photos you take with your digital camera as well as how to improve them in Photoshop Elements. Let's face it, about half of the problems that can be corrected in Elements can be prevented when the photo is taken. The book is laid out in a logical progression and with short concise explanations. Because the approach of the book is visual (a picture is worth a thousand words even adjusting for inflation) the concepts are easy to understand. Whether you are new to digital photography or are a professional this book presents information you need to take better pictures and then use Photoshop Elements to enhance (or correct other's mistakes because after reading this book you won't be making those errors again). The other advantage of the book is the way it is organized. Let's face it, no matter how good a technical book is, no one will read it from cover to cover. The organization of the book makes it easy to find the topic you want without reading the entire chapter. If you know someone who just got adigital camera as a graduation gift, this book would make the perfect companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best purchase I have made as a graphic designer-besides my computer
I work as a professional graphic design artist as well as a fine artist, and I have spent literally hours combing through the Photoshop how-to books in order to learn more innovative apporaches to the program.
2-0 out of 5 stars Just another dumb Photoshop Book
Ok this book is just another bla Photoshop book. Nothing great not nothing new that has not already been mentioned in other photoshop books

3-0 out of 5 stars Illustration Inspiration
Photoshop tennis anyone? In Photoshop Secrets twenty designers face off in ten different matches, two designers to a match. One designer starts an image through a combination of photo clips and Photoshop actions then passes it to another designer for the next "volley". Each match has ten volleys and produces ten completely unique images. These are images that fit the digital illustration genre. If you're looking for photorealistic techniques, check out one of Bert Monroy's books. How much you'll learn about Photoshop techniques certainly depends on your current knowledge level, but based on what I found this book will give you a few interesting things to try and, even more, a good bit of inspiration if you're interested in doing some professional illustration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, I sure needed this book...
I couldn't put this book down. Super easy to read. My struggle with slices in Photoshop and tables with Dreamweaver are over. In just two days I was able to use my new found knowledge to design and publish my first photoshop designed website. The tutorials are well laid out and fun to follow. Thanks Colin, great job!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point for print designers getting into web
If you are a seasoned graphic designer wishing to be able to create web pages as well print design, this book may be a good place to start. Designers fluent in Adobe Photoshop should have no problem creating the buttons, backgrounds, and other visual elements for the web pages you will create with this book. It's a totally different approach to creating a web site that I found pretty interesting--as in planning to make my own thumbnails and comp page for an upcoming project. I suspect this is a more intuitive way for designers to approach web design. Smith's approach is more that of a designer than a programmer. As a graphic designer myself who moved into web design a few years ago, I find Smith's approach more natural. The layout is straightforward and fairly easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Photoshop manual
I'm really fond of this book. I'm an advanced amateur photographer, and I use Photoshop as my "digital darkroom". This book has really opened the world of possibilities for me. If you know just a little about Photoshop, you can still do quite a lot, but it will all be trial-and-error, and you'll waste a lot of time. This book will actually save you time and show you how to do things fast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Book
Good Book. Does not provide the same luxury as classroom teaching but a good book to have while playing with some advanced features of Photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes Elements to an advaced level
This text is written for photographers that want to make their images look there very best.Unlike introductory texts, Mr. Galer's book goes into the very soul of Photoshop Elements (PSE) to find hidden features that give pictures a WOW factor. Here are a few examples. In introductory text, the student is introduced to the unsharp mask filter and given some suggested settings. In Galer's text, the student is introduced to some unique masking techniques created with the high pass, and threshold filters to locate edges. He then combines that technique with paint masks and the magic erasure tool to isolate just those areas that will benefit from edge crispness. The results are stunning.Galer also has a technique for making high dynamic range (HDR) photos using some add-on layer styles that are available in the companion DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Maximum Performance
I have completed several Photoshop course books and found all of them to be very good and useful. So I had a reasonable knowledge base when I discovered this book. I found that in this book, the author has covered the most useful Photoshop examples yet. The text and video projects complement each other perfectly and are seamless. Not only does the author explain every step of the project, but he also does the most important thing: he tells you why he is doing it. This book has propelled my knowledge of Photoshop Elements 4.0 to a very high competent professional level. I cannot express my absolute delight with my new skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 4.0 Maximum Performance
One of the best books out in the market about using Photoshop Elements 4.0 (PSE4) to edit pictures. Comes with a DVD containing pictures to practice on, and some movies to watch while the author explains a specific technique. There are some techniques included in this book that I've not seen included in any other book. Examples are clear and concise, and with accompanying pictures at each stage. Stress is on using techniques to work on pictures that will not harm the pictures or the pixels themselves. These techniques include learning all about gradients and making some for yourself that increase contrast, or using adjustment layers, and making masks to affect the contrast, learning how to get the most efficient use out of the levels settings, among other things. Take part of a gradient sample in PSE4 and use it to create beams of light coming out of a storm cloud! Great book. This book teaches you how to work on pictures with many different techniques--techniques that do the least harm to the original working photo--techniques that allow you to take care of small subtle details that are usually ignored, but that make your work more believable. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant book
I am very very pleased with this book. It is exactly what I have been looking for. I first purchased a DVD by the same author called*Photoshop for Architects* which I felt was so well done that I decided to buy the book. Having both is a real asset for they work in unison. Buying the book and the DVD, in my opinion, is a necessity. Each stands alonebut they compliment each other. The DVD provides comprehensive coverage without going into every small detail. The book parallels the same information on the DVD but goes into greater detail. I am Architecturally educated but with limited computer experience and I have only recently purchased a first ADOBE product which is ADOBE CS.I imagine this book would be an excellent tool for anyone new to PS no matter what the intended use of PS will eventually be. The book starts with some general, but relevant, tech info without scientific overload. It step by step moves one through a real project from beginning to end so you learn most of the tools, how to set things up, various ways of accomplishing the same things and what to do in finishing out a project. I consider the presentation style to be superb for learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book & CD
Couldn't go another day without thanking you for this great "Photoshop Elements 2 Solutions" Book. After completing half of the Books Photo Exercises which gives the simplest, precise way to acheive the best professional results, I've finally learned Photoshop. This has evaded me for years spent on other learning programs. I just couldn't understand how the layers related and applied to each other for the background or how to work on them to get a final finish quality photo. The exercises were easy and understandable and fun to learn. Plus all those Plug-Ins on the CD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague
I bought this book expecting the enclosed CD to be a full tutorial. It is not. If you read far enough into the fine print it does say it is a trial (read demo) copy. To my sorrow I didn't see this; all I read was "100 before images" and "follow along with the book". Sounds great, but what you get is software that shows you what the real thing WOULD do if you bought it. Legal but morally reprehensible. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
Since there aren't many books out there on Painter, I grabbed this book as soon as I saw it figuring that the Illustrator and Photoshop information would be a bonus. What a disappointment - the very day I received the book I resold it on Amazon. The book's title "Side by Side" describes exactly what you can expect to find inside this book - a comparison of the three programs. I can't see where having this book would be useful since it really doesn't describe techniques or provide useful information, or do anything more than cite differences between the programs, which any user would already be aware of anyways. Rather than waste your money on this useless book, I'd recommend the WOW books and/or Kelby's photoshop books - they're packed full of useful information. This book gets one star for the pretty pictures.

I enjoyed the insightful comparisons between these packages. However, the biggest drawback is that this book doesn't cover the most recent versions of the software, but it a version behind. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Three great things about this book!
There are three things that I really like about this book:
5-0 out of 5 stars worth every penny, and then some
I'm usually under intense deadline pressure, and the learning curve for a particular technique can sometimes cost me valuable time. I just don't have time to really play with Illustrator, and thus a lot of the cutting edge features - particularly those that have emerged and evolved over the past two or three revisions - have unfortunately eluded me at times. While there are other books that touch on these features, 3D Effects in particular, there is no book anywhere close to Illustrator Gone Wild. The WOW book is a beautifully composed book. But it isn't an intense exploration of cutting edge design techniques like Gone Wild is. This one has been very helpful to me, allowing me to pick up techniques more or less verbatim, or riff in a related direction. Nice going, Dave and Mark.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book.
I really hate to pan a book because I have a lot of respect for the effort that goes into writing one but do yourself a favor and skip this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the mystery out of pre-press and color correction
Professional Photoshop 5 is out now. Where is it Amazon? If you have not worked extensively in color correction you will need to read this a couple of times to use all the techniques involed, but, you will understand itall. It helps alot if you know Photoshop well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book on CMYK corrections
Though it competes in some ways with my book (Adobe Photoshop 5 How-To, ISBN 1571691561), I think there is a healthy difference of opinion and technique in this book. Certainly a valuable tool in learning to usePhotoshop tools and image theory. One of the few I recommend.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for those workinh in RGB
I purchased this book based on the online reccomendations of others. I wasshocked to learn that the entire focus of the book is on CMYK color and notRGB! (I only work in RGB as do many others.) This was rather misleading tosay the least. I urge those of you who DO work in RGB to pass on this book.It is strictly designed for CMYK. Howard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars killer tips
If you do not have alot of time in your day and a basic understanding of Illustrator this is perfect. Each tip is just that a tip.Half page explanation, easy way to do things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy reference book for Illustrator
Unlike a lot of Illustrator books, this doesn't describe the full range of functionality or offer lesson plans. Instead, it's a compendium of hints and shortcuts, many of which are those niggling little things that you wish you knew how to do, but can never seem to find in the bigger, more complete books.
4-0 out of 5 stars well worth the money
I guess "photoshop Junkie" must be an incredibly experienced Illustrator user to know all the tips in this book. I've used Illustrator for around 5 years and there were lots of tips that I didn't know. Okay, I probably could have found many of them by searching around in the Help Files, but why bother when they're right there in the book?

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect beginners book! Choose this and not the "dummies" book.
Photoshop is a complex program. Theres no doubt about it, if you're a total PS newb it can be very daunting prospect indeed. There are literally hundreds of books about Photoshop but most are aimed at the experianced, or at the very least someone who has some knowledge already of at some graphics software or other.

Title:Sams Teach Yourself Adobe Photoshop CS2 in 24 Hours
2-0 out of 5 stars Forget Sams Teach Yourself Photoshop CS2!
This book is a great disappointment. I learnt more about removing 'red eye' from photographs from the Adobe Help files than from this expensive book. A chatty approach, not very practical. I am now going to buy a copy of Classroom in a Book (Photoshop CS2) as it has been recommended by friends and has many stars in the Amazon reviews. ... Read more
