5-0 out of 5 stars great way to learn compositing in general
This book is a great intoduction into the field of Digital Compositing in general. If you already know the basics of After Effects and want to learn how to see and handle live-action footage for visual effects, this is your ultimate guide. Mark Christiansen talks, of course, a lot about the After Effects application (e.g. how to optimize the interface and your personal workflow). But there are also chapters that cover more general topics like how to match a virtual 3D camera to a real film camera, the differences between lens blur and computer generated blur, how to see and recreate light and color situations in a shot, Greenscreen Keying, Rotoscoping, specifics about working with high dynamic range images like scanned film footage and so on. I've also read parts of the famous book "The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" by Ron Brinkman, which covers a lot of simmilar issues. While Brinkman goes into a lot more theoretical details but doesn't cover specific software solutions, Christiansen matches a perfect combination between general theorie and practical application. You learn how to see images - but also how to directly manipulate them in After Effects. But a lot of the knowledge that is shown in this book, could also be used when working with other compositing systems - so it's really worth reading if you already work with After Effects, even if you want to migrate to a different software one day. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, not for beginners
I have to agree with an earlier reviewer that indicated that this is not for beginners.I have 2 years of experience with video editing (Final Cut) and Photoshop CS/CS2, and the knowledge that using those tools gave me prepared me to use this book.I'm not sure that ideas such as layers, timelines, compositions, effects, etc. would have made sense to me without that prior knowledge.
2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for beginners
Before I purchased this book, I read the premier 2.0 classroom in a book and I love the book.It explains almost everything you need to know about using premier pro. So after reading premier pro classroom in a book I readily bought the AE 7 classroom in a book thinking that by reading this book I could gain a lot of knowledge as I did with premier pro. However, to my surprise it did not helped me a lot. Yes, it has tutorials for you to follow but it does not explain to you why you have to do this and why not to do this.It doesn't have any chapter about the features of AE 7 not like premier pro classroom in the book. The first chapter you will go directly to a tutorial it show you steps to follow however after finishing the tutorial you will not learn much so after reading chapter 9 I stopped readingbecause it just a waste of time to me as a beginner of AE. However, if you already using after effects and just upgrading to AE 7 then this book will help you because you already have an idea how AE works. If you are still a beginner, I suggest go to lynda.com and get the cd after effects 7 essential training. You won't regret you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great beginning book
I have have AE Pro 6 on my editing pc for 2 years now. Using it for s few films i did. I found it very difficult to learn. Flash forward I upgrade to AE7 pro and love it! I got this book at the same time and its been my bible. Very easy to follow and great usable tutorials. I highly recommend this book for new AE users! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
I found the 6.5 edition so useful that I didn't hesitate for a second to order the 7.0 edition (which came out two months after I bought the first edition.)
5-0 out of 5 stars After Effects 7 Studio Techniques: An Expert Guide from an After Effects Expert
Buy this book; its cost (particularly here at Amazon) is trivial compared to the software, and you'll get some important independent opinions and expert advice that, from what I understand, isn't available anywhere else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely useful and worthwhile
if motion graphics is your thing, this is a fantastic resource. Nobody more clearly explains the basic concepts of layering, nesting, timelines, footage, transformations, masks, precomposing, stencils, track mattes, transfer modes, keyframes, rendering, resolutions, plugins, working with audio, and much more.
5-0 out of 5 stars After Effects in Production: A Companion for Creating Motion Graphics
This is an excellent resource for After Effects. The "Meyers" Have always produced great learning materials and this is another proof positive of that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God Somone's Listening!!
Tired of the usual "Blah, Blah, Blah" in computer books? FINALLY - somone is listening to the needs of graphics professionals and students wanting to learn tips and tricks for doing these effects and animations! Foster not only shows you HOW to do these techniques, but more importantly, WHY! I have found this book indespensible in my advancement way beyond the basic tools and functional training of other After Effects books. If you want to learn animation or do any kind of special effects on your own, then get this book NOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely useful
have bought many books on after effect and photoshop.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the complete beginner...
I have to say that you MUST need a solid undertanding or at least the basics of After Effects before getting this book. Also, there are not many figures to ilustrate the projects in an easy way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use reference for a Novice-Intermediate After Effects Student
I found this book to be a very easy to navigate reference for my attempt at learning and using After Effects. I recommend it as an excellent cross-reference resource, especially if you are attending an After Effects classroom. I'm not sure, however, whether a nubie or novice would be able to learn easily just from reading this bookalone. Nevertheless, I give this book and the way it is structured, two-thumbs up as far as adding it to anyone's Visual Media Library.

2-0 out of 5 stars typical
I wasn't expecting anything less and the only reason I got the book was because it was cheaper on amazon then at my college's bookstore. Now what I didn't realize was the fact that Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects volumes 1 and 2 are far superior to any other book out there. So I recommend those instead. This book is just as dull and boring as most informational software books with little explanation about how to do things, little picture representation and only explaining the basics oh in say 700 pages.... if you know how to use adobe illustator or photoshop which u clearly should if you intend on using aftereffects, I suggest whether you are a beginner intermediate or advanced animator to get the creating motion graphics books instead.Ya 10$ more but the learning experience and education you'll get from those books compared to this one is uncomparable.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Book for After Effects
It says the books in the Visual QuickPro series are similar to the Visual QuickStart series, but QuickPro is for more advanced users. After Effects is, by its very nature, a more advanced application for creating video than, say iMovie. That's because After Effects is a "motion graphics" program with far more features than basic video editing. I think of it as Photoshop with motion and a timeline.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Just horrible book. One of the worsest i even had. A lot of "water" and almost no usefull information. Many details between explanations are missed, that calls "guess yourself what you have to do".

3-0 out of 5 stars so-so intro
This book is so-so intro to After Effects. I liked the fact that all chapters are centered around a single project. However, the book won't teach you much more than what you can learn by looking at the help files or a manual or the free tutorials on Adobe's website. Creating Motion Graphics from Chris & Trish Meyer is head and shoulders above this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars ha!
A good second book to have. I suggest getting the Lynda HOT book first, though, cos this one simply makes too many leaps, leaves too much unsaid. A reason behind doing certain things would certainly be a plus in the next edition. Some of the lessons can be hard to understand at first: Through no fault of mine I had to go back a redo certain portions 2-3 times. I'm usually pretty adept at following books like these, so I can only chalk it up to poor explanation. But it's still a good foundation book, and props also to its unique one-project/modular approach. The key to learning AE, though, is to move through three or four of these book quickly in succession. Good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars On Adobe Affter Effects H.O.T.
This is a great guide to learning Adobe After Effects. Interactive and highly effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid introduction
traditionally the Meyers books are considered the standard, but they're kind of dense, a lot to absorb, and they move through material a bit fast. If you're committed and hungry, then maybe they're what you want, but if you want a gentler beginning to build your confidence, I think you're better off starting with this book, and then taking on the Meyers books once you have a solid overall grounding. The difference in layout alone is plenty reason: this book has a lot more white space and breathing room, while the Meyers books are just crammed margin to margin, and feel smaller, even though they are the same size. Properly delivered, AE gives itself up wonderfully, but there's so much to it, you run the risk of overwhelm if it piles on too fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST BOOK FOR "AFTER EFFECTS 6"PERIOD !!
I am a Production Manager for a major TV Station in the Southwest. This is by far the most comprehensive and informative step by step book on "Adobe After Effects" that I have ever read on the subject. Perfect if you are a beginner and working on MAC platform. If you are already familiar with previous versions of After Effects maybe you should look for a more technically advanced book. But if you are new to the subject you won't find a better book than this one. Period! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it's a great book
this boosk is excelent, its a great guide to begin in the world of after effects

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding learning tool
Trish and Chris Meyer have created an easy to read text book that can teach anyone how to use this amazing program. But what makes this book better than most is the dvd-rom. not only does it give you every image and movie and project used to teach the lessons in the book but it also includes a number of free plug-ins and mattes that you can use in your own work. Considering the low price of this book it is a great value. The plugins and mattes alone are probably worth of $200 but I got the book for about $40. A great buy for anyone interested in learning after effects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick learming tool
This book is great, just the first chapter jumps you right into the action and teaches you a little everything. Then after the first chapter they concentrate on more specific topics. Over all I would recommend that you buy this book. The materials do update for after effect 7, and there are free plug-ins. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best teaching without a class
This book is worth every penny! I've only been working with After Effects for a few months and it has helped me learn everthing from scratch. The author makes it seem as if he's right over your shoulder as you go through the tutorials. I have sinced upgraded to AE 6.5 but I still find helpful ideas in this book. This is definitely for beginners and probably even a refresher for proffesionals. If you're still working with AE 5.0 or 5.5...get this book! It makes learning an app fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recource, no fat
I am a moderate after effects user..There are quite a few things that are not so easy to grasp..This book explains everything, in depth, in terms anyone can understand..You do not need to be sitting at the computer to follow their tutorials, to learn how to do a new skill (very nice, I am not a huge fan of reading, and being on the computer..).5-0 out of 5 stars After Effects Bible 5
WOW! where do i start? i am, by nature, a multimedia gu-ru. love everything about it! i 1st dipped into adobe premiere and then adobe photoshop. i was eagerly wanting to learn adobe "after effects" which alot say, is the KING of the adobe line up. just due to the fact that its just that, "AFTER EFFECTS." basicly the final touch of a multimedia project. keeping in mind i had NO after effects experiance what so ever. that may be a good guage for the review.Read more

Having written training material myself, I know how difficult it is to write for every contingency, considering everything a novice might do wrong. The authors of this book have done a great job at presenting instructions clearly and completely, so that even an absolute newbie at After Effects like myself can follow every lesson. Various checkpoints allow you to verify that you are on the right track. The lessons are very clear and easy to follow, and I appreciate the continuity in presenting an entire project throughout the book, so that I feel I am really accomplishing something. After just a few lessons, I feel that I am grasping what After Effects is all about.2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks variety in content
Disappointed with this text because of the single project through which this publication teaches After Effects. Compared to previous AE: Classroom in a Book books (earlier versions of After Effects) in which multiple creative projects unfolded as the learner used the tools, After Effects 5.0 teaches the program through one long project. The authors clearly guide the learner through important aspects of After Effects. However, if you are seeking a learn-and-do book that exposes you to a range of creative uses for After Effects, this book may be a disappointment.

This book will improve the look of your work and the speed at which you do it!Did you know After Effects can call your cell phone when a render is done? It's in there!A must for any compositing or graphics suite.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT designer friendly!
I'm a graphic design student that is delving into the complex world of motion graphics, and I thought this book was convoluted and overly detailed.I fully acknowledge that I'm a beginner and tend to be more creative than technical, but I felt that perhaps the book could have been written with readers like myself in mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a grate book, explaining every thing about after effects very deeply but in simple ways anyone can understand.5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginners and Quick Start Book
Thi Book is excellent for those who just want to get Affter Effects up and running and quickly jump into the application. It is not, however, going to teach you how to do stunning special effects, as this book is not geared for that purpose.Read more

Editorial Review

Users of Adobe After Effects 3.1, the professional compositing application for Macintosh and Windows, have an excellent guidebook in this Classroom in a Book offering. In lesson after lesson, you build increasingly sophisticated composite movies using project files on the book's hybrid CD-ROM. You start off by learning the interface and then use the product's layering, masking, matte, keying-control, and special effects features. Then you learn how to animate with keyframes; adjust interpolations and velocity; use motion tracking and blue-screen keying features; synchronize audio and video; integrate animated layers from Photoshop; and render your movies. An appendix provides technical information on issues relating to film and video, such as alpha channels, frame rates, video-safe areas, NTSC color space, video aspect ratios, interlacing, video transfers, rendering for film, and audio. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gives you all the basics.
I've just jumped into the world of graphic design and all of the Classroom in a Book series have been extremely helpful. If there were only one criticism of After Effects, I'd say that the projects weren't really"modern" enough for what I want to do. It doesn't show you how todo fast paced commercial like effects, instead it teaches you slower, moresimple projects. But all the basics are there which is the important part.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written with good exercises.
This book will teach you the fundamentals. The exercises work and produce the results expected. The book could use a more comprehensive index.

5-0 out of 5 stars As always from Adobe-a must have learning book!
All Adobe Classroom In A Book series (and I've done many) have been wonderful. This is no exception.I only wish they would introduce them with their software release, only makes sense.I am now waiting for AE 4.0Classroom in a book.Adobe has the best plan of any software company onhow to educate it's masses. Thanks again Adobe, and now where's 4.0 andwhat did you do to the clone brush and eye dropper in Photoshop 5.0? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful even for veteran Frame users
If you already own or use a copy of FrameMaker at work, and you needadditional skills in using the software, or want to learn more of thepowerful features Frame has to offer, this book will be useful to you. Ican't say how helpful it would be to a new user, but for anyone who's beenmuddling through by learning how to use Frame on their own, this book willteach you many things you don't already know, and will help you createbetter-constructed documents. Remember to practice on documents you createyourself (from scratch) or the lessons won't stick. ... Read more
