An excellent reference for System Administrators
Power UNIX and Linux users will want to expand their skills. It's inevitable. Some will get frustrated and drop out and some will work their way through it.
Great reference, full of examples, for all UNIX/Linux/BSD users
At first glance, this book seems like a typical O'Reilly book: a narrow title, rich in material, and is beneficial to a much wider audience than the title reveals. It covers a wide range of system administration subjects and goes way beyond just the essentials.
Want to understand Unix and not just use it? This is the book.
This book is for the reader that wants to move beyond the basic, high level overview Unix book and truly understand the Unix system and why it invokes passion from it's fan base. This book could be used by the beginning user, but the novice or casual reader may find this book overwhelming in the sheer level of information it provides. If you are a system administrator, you will find this book is THE book you refer to the most, to the point you may end up keeping this book close to your Unix system at all times. Don't let the 2002 publication date think the book is out of date. Great Technical Book
This is a great book. It is very informative and very useful.

Excellent coverage, well written
I found this book to be both comprehensive and well written. It was recommended to me by a very experienced AIX user. I am much less experienced, but I also found the book very helpful- it has a good mix of information, and is presented in a logical, well formatted way.

Techno shock
I used AIX in the mid 90's. I got pretty good at installations, SNA services, peripherals and applications. Since them I switched to HP/UX and moves from version 9 to 10 to 11; so I am familiar with today's systems.

Delivers as promised
I'm writing this review because I think the 1-star review below is unfair to the author. The various diagnostics tools are well explained and a good methodology is also given for using them. Possible bottlenecks and explained in detail; methods to detect them are given and remedies are proposed. Getting into more detail would be very difficult, since every AIX system is different. Using this book, any competent AIX admin should be able to get a badly performing AIX box to work near its optimal level. And if that's not enough, you'll know if you need more CPU, memory or disks to reach your performance goal.

way too basic
Just tamed down man pages for some very basic aix monitoring commands.Does not go into any of the ENV tunables or cover much theory or real-life examples on how changing things can effect the system.I don't know what Iwas expecting from such a thin book!

Clearly defined and well written.
I am a relative newbi to the UNIX world and very new to AIX.In spite of that I found this book clearly defined and well written.Accelerating AIX helped to get my head wrapped around the AIX architecture. The examples were accurate and easy to follow while the figures were exactly what theywere supposed to be. boilerplate scripts
This is a great book to get started and understand some fairly a great help for new admins
I was pleased to find that the author understood the trepidation which new system administrators feel when they don't know what will happen next in a series of menus and screens.Showing each SMIT screen and explaining what would happen has given me far greater confidence in using SMIT. Unfortunately, this book adds no insight into using or configuring AIX.A large portion of the pages are covered with screen shots of various SMIT screens (the AIX administration tool) and the text surrounding these screenshots does not provide any meaningfull insight.Read more

Way outdated
This book was published in 1996.It's almost ten years old.If you're working with a version of AIX newer than that, you should probably get a more up to date book.It's also way overpriced for something so ancient.

Out of date and over priced.... but still good.
This is the only good commercial book about AIX. Is it because of IBM's Red Books being so good? Maybe, it's certainly not because of their (...) man-pages. This book will get you through everything till you hit an SP environment (PSSP), take IBM classes after that!

Good for UNIX Beginners
If you have limited experience on UNIX and end up in a job where you have to learn AIX admin, then this is the correct book.If you have indepth UNIX experience with HP-UX or NCR, etc, then you will outgrow this book in about 15 minutes.There are many tasks that need to be done that are not available in smit (smitty).This book won't cover them. ... RETITLE to AIX for UNIX beginners
This book is not advanced enough to even have "professionals" in the title. Seriously though - weak index, limited depth of AIX Unix system. I have referenced 4 times so far regarding "semi" advanced subjects and found nothing useful. Not a good tool

Only get if you want to buy every book on AIX ever published
There is not much useful information in the book, it's more of a reference/appendix than a useful, informative guide. I would recommend getting the AIX survival guide or the DeRoest system administration guide instead.

Don't buy this book
This book is useless. No detailed information on how to do anything. Don't waste your money.

Simply AIX 4.3
If you want to know why to Buy AIX 4.3, this book is for you.This bookwill give you all the reasons to buy AIX over other versions of UNIX oreven other OS's. It is an AIX salesman's Bible. If you want to knowanything about using AIX stay away from this book.No Useful informationabout Installing, Configuring, Using, or Administering AIX will beforthcoming.The Authors took the approach that AIX will take care ofeverything for you so you don't need to know anything, in which case youdon't need this book. "the AIX Survival Guide" has been a muchbetter reference for AIX.I purchased this book because it directlyreferenced version 4.3, which I am using, and thought it would be of themost use.It's Contents mentioned several things that weren't around whenmany of other AIX Books were written.64Bit Systems and, Y2K to mention afew. If you know anything about Unix you will be disappointed.
This is a very simplistic book containing mostly pictures of the SMIT GUI, and pointers to other resources on AIX. Every third sentence has a "cute" remark and an explanation point. I read it in about 25minutes and will be returning it. In no way will this book enlighten you onAIX or systems administration. ... Read more
