Editorial Review

Regular expressions are a central element of UNIX utilities like egrep and programming languages such as Perl. But whether you're a UNIX user or not, you can benefit from a better understanding of regular expressions since they work with applications ranging from validating data-entry fields to manipulating information in multimegabyte text files. 4-0 out of 5 stars Best Title on the Subject
If you have ever been frustrated trying to figure out Regular Expressions (RegEx) based only on a table showing symbols and a few paragraphs of explanations obviously written by someone who assumes you are already familiar with the concept, then this book is for you.Don't be daunted by 480+ page size of this title; before you reach the end of chapter 2 you find yourself with a solid understanding of the concepts, structure, syntax and "keywords" in common use by those utilities, programming languages and applications that incorporate RegExs.The middle of the book covers implementation of RegEx in different environments, techniques for creating the expressions, and methods for creating efficient expressions. The end chapters are specific for Perl, Java, VB.NET and PHP users.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Regex book
This book is an invaluable resource. I learned more than I wanted to know about regex after reading this book. The authors breaks things down to the smallest detail and discusses each aspect. He covers regular expressions, their engines, their use, and some tips and tricks without losing the reader.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Regular Expressions
I've corresponded personally with Jeffrey Friedl several times over the last few years, and I remember being at once impressed with his attention to detail and his focus. I was invited to be one of the technical review editors for this third edition of his authoritative book on Regular Expressions, but had to pass due to time constraints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information Dashboard Design
This book primarily deals with what the title says. Dashboards. I was not aware ofthe complexity and breadth of this type of interface, but since it is not a forte I usually provide to clients, the book was an interesting read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I had high hopes when picking up this book.In the end I found little of use.Perhaps I was looking for more than an approach that was business oriented.Information displays for systems monitoring are a topic almost completely missed in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, Bad textbook
This is actually a very good book to read - what they cover, they cover in depth, building each concept up from elementary concepts so you can always see how they got from point A to point B.The authors present mathematical proofs of essentially every assertion (although, as is typical of "discrete math" proofs, the proofs can sometimes be a tad on the silly side as they sometimes just restate whatever they're trying to prove - blame academia). The algorithms are all presented in a language-agnostic pseudocode which highlights the essentials of the algorithm itself without burdening the reader with language idiosyncracies.Plus, if you want something more concrete, the latest edition comes with a CD-ROM including all the algorithms implemented in Java!
4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference
This book is not for the casual reader. If the contents seems confusing at times it is because there are hard problems being analyzed.Any book on algorithms that is not confusing at times is probably not discussing any interesting algorithms. While quite academic, this book is also relevant to any engineer who needs to design/optimize a non-trivial algorithm. It's also one of those books that one can open up to any random page and start reading.Sometimes when I get coders-block, this is just the thing to break me out of it.This book is heavy, expensive and well worth its weight and price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Book
This is an excellent book. Well written, easy to understand, precise, good problems, excellent coverage of the basics. This book can provide an excellent foundation in computer science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book
this is a very good book about web usability and its not a complex kind of book, you start reading it and u dont want to stop it untill you finish it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..
As an avid read of Mr.Nielsen's blog and his website, I figured this book would comprise the "Bible of Web Design".Unfortunately, I was a bit let down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple IS usually better
Please people don't design incredibly complex sites with over the top graphics that take an hour(feels like) to download even on broadband! I encounter this everyday and can't imagine what it must be like for those on dial-up, which is still most of the internet user base. Designers like to design and justify their high paying jobs by these crazy sites that simply drive me nuts. I recently tried looking for sunglasses on the Ray Ban site and Holy [...]! What a pain in the [...]! I finally went to a small reseller site where I could actually see the glasses quickly and make a purchase. The Ray Ban site I'm sure cost a fortune and is pretty but NOT user friendly. Web site designers need to remember that these sites are for people to find products and services, not to win design contests. My ex is a graphic designer(excuse me...User Interface Experience) for a very well know company and I know how they think. The more elaborate the better, we can charge clients more! KISS ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great usability book
As my second most favorite usability book, this book points out the hundreds of ways a site can go wrong, and the many points to consider when designing sites. Let's be honest - it's pretty impossible to satisfy all their guidelines and STILL meet a deadline - but at least you can pick the ones that matter most to your company, and be aware of the once you missed. Another must read for web designers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any serious web developer
rioritizing Web Usability by Jakob Nielsen and Hoa Loranger can best be described as a more 'strict' approach to web usability. If you have been in web development for any extended period of time it is likely that you have heard the name Jakob Nielsen. He offers great insight to web usability and has for many years. Some may view him as strict, some as normal, and still some as WAY off his rocker. No matter how you view him, he deserves much respect for his time spent in usability studies and the (somewhat timeless) statistics and information he brings to the table. I just finished reading this book, coupled with "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krugg, and appreciated what all of the authors could present through statistics, screenshots, and customer insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memory, thinking skills, creativity - great book
Mind Performance Hacks includes the usual fare of all memory books - various memory systems including the Major and Dominic Systems and variations of them. However, these authors go beyond the memory books by including many of the newer concepts in information processing such as mind mapping, dealing with cruft, ways of increasing creativity, capturing creative thoughts and using your creative self to resolve current issues. They also include some neat math tricks and techniques to quickly check the results of calculations for accuracy, estimate square roots, and other quick calculations.Unusual areas include better decision making and communications, bringing clarity to your life by working with emotional problems, and using meditation. And of course they include things to do to exercise your brain and keep it in tip top shape.Mind Performance Hacks: Tips and Tools for Overclocking Your Brain is highly recommended and was well beyond what I had expected from the title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of Verilog language
Very comprehensive text about the Verilog language, covering the various aspects of the language. The text is clear and well organized. The exercises at the end of the chapter helped me a lot in the learning process. The simulator included is very simnple and all examples in the book run flawlessly. A few things I did not like: the few mistakes in the text and code could have been easily caught by any careful reviewer, the lack of a more detailed example to show the usage of the various constructs in a real world Verilog design and hints about how to build synthesizable Verilog programs. I have enjoyed the author's style and recommend the book for any person who wants to learn Verilog, including other software engineers like myself who want to understand some HDL basics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good explanations but not for reference
I read the book; it is a good one for reader to catch the idea quickly. But to use it as a reference book might not be a good idea. The topic organization is divided into basic usage section and advanced technique section, and kind of hard to locate for a certain issue. However, it is still worthy of reading as a beginner. The most things I like this book is it use example(s) to explain the concept.

4-0 out of 5 stars an easy language
The author offers more than just a detailing of the various parts of the Verilog language. He also covers extra features that enhance what you can do in Verilog for the purposes of modelling or analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely useful
This book covers many aspects of programming the ARM familiy, including a surprisingly thorough discussion on fixed-point DSP computation.
3-0 out of 5 stars If your company will buy it for you, get it
In the ARM tradition of charging for everything, thefirmware guide by Sloss is easy to read, and comprehensive up to ARM10/StrongARM XScale/926/940.That said, the book looks like the notes from a firmware lecture delivered by an Arm Apps engineer. The book is strongest in coverage of MMU and cache, but weak on ARM11 (1136 only and as a final chapter) and essentially non-existent in Jazelle coverage.Nice features are the toy RTOS which appears early at reappears with more features (memory protection, and MMU, for example). That this book is so quickly out of date brings the point that MDR bulleted last year, that the ARM family needs birth control but that is a topic for another discussion.Sloss' book has 'non-commercial license' for all the sourcecode.huh?Regarding this book, Freescale for example publishes equivalent information (old ESS manuals) in the 860/8260 training manuals for free, on their website. If your company pays for your books, by all means have them get the sloss book for you it makes a great read on the john, but if you are a student or independent developer, you would be as well served by studying the ARM ARM and applicable ARM source code for U-Boot, Redboot and the L4 microkernel, or even Ed Sutter's book, with the added benefit that you would have a license to use the code in your project.

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 Stars
If you are developing something that contain an ARM core.... this is definitely the BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive resource for web masters who consider themselves professionals
Each time I sit down to redevelop a website I revist this book.It can really help you understand the shortcomings of a site's present information architecture and explain those shortcomings to non-techy clients.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but a bit on the fluffy side
I'm the kind of reader that enjoys straight to the point books. As interesting as this book was, I found it rambled and went too deep into how to sell IA to administration, or learn about IA in schools, or what steps should one take to become an information architect, etc. I found it presented ideas, often left the reader at the end of each section with "it depends" or "you'll see what works best for you". Which is fine, but isn't really helpful.

The book was clean and brand new as mentioned. Thanks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for beginners
Understanding the Linux Kernel is an excellent guide for those who have some experience using Linux, and would like to know what's going on under the hood. It's a comprehensive guide that not only describes how Linux boots and initializes itself, and how programs call functions inside the kernel, but actually goes down to the murky depths of interrupts, process switching, inter-process communication, and even memory management down to the level of the 80x86 processor instructions, registers and features (actually if you add it all up, memory management takes up most of the book -- a good thing!). Furthermore there are chapters about essentials such as file systems and device drivers.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you curious about how Linux works and why it is so efficient? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Daniel Plerre Bovet and Marco Cesati, have done an outstanding job of writing a practical book that will help you find your way through the many thousands of lines of code.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for understanding Cryptography.
This book has really shed a lot of light on cryptography for me. I honestly can't put it down--I wish I had paid more attention in my statistics classes so I could be able to apply some of the stuff the author talks about better. I am about half way through the book, and I haven't gotten to the point where it's more of a chore than a pleasure to read it (something I can't about my other technical books).
5-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to drink from the firehose
This book is really incredible. When it was first published in the mid-90's, there was almost no material available on the subject of cryptography. Now, ten years later, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of books riding on Schneier's coattails - but almost none have anything new or useful to say.Impeccably researched (with 1,653 references!) and unarguably complete, Schneier's expertise in theoretical mathematics, experience as a practitioner, and razor-sharp lucidity combine to make this the only book you'll ever need on the subject of cryptography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - One of the better computer Manuals I've seen
Just plain good. Well written, well put togeather, and makes it all easy to understand. My only complaint is it should come with a box of stick-its :) I've marked so many pages already.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I bought this first...
I bought the "Absolute Beginers Guide..." first. It wasn't 'absolute' enough for me.The layout of this book was much more logical and comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars it really is ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Teaching Resource
I have taught systems analysis and design methods for four years using this text or its previous editions. It has its strong and weak points. It covers the basics very well, and gives the students a good grounding in classical techniques. The authors have done a lot to include object-oriented techniques in the 6th and 7th editions. This meets my prefered approach since both techniques have their value, and analysts need to be familiar with both.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Coverage of the Field, but a bit too much Microsoft
With all the advances in computers, including the availability of industry specific software, industry still has huge demands for systems that facilitate the operation of their company. This book is oriented to teach those who design such systems. This book is intended to be a text for undergraduate college students. It is recommended that the student have at least a computer literacy class as a prerequisite. I believe that I would also require at least one programming cource to give the student some idea of what he will be asking the coders and programmers to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for System Analysts.
This book is clearly written for those who are seeking to be System Analysts. A significant chunk of pages are dedicated to their specific role.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the theory and practice of database design
This is one of the better books on the theory of database systems design. It is not meant to be a book on applications, rather it is a commonly used textbook in upper level undergraduate and graduate classes on the subject. However, this latest edition has reorganized the material somewhat and has added to its sections on XML and SQL in an attempt to show the theory through more real-world scenarios.
