3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent breadth and clarity, organization and details wanting
Unlike other OS books I've seen, A Systematic View is a clearly written, concise introduction to the foundations of operating systems -- or at least the first few chapters are. As noted by other reviewers, the book doesn't know where to go after the first section -- it meanders into too-brief-to-be-useful hands-on tutorial sections for the middle portion, then moves on to touch open a few particulars with a few popular systems in a way remniscent of excerpts from a heavier text before concluding with a section on distributed computing (the bulk of which concerns remote file access via CIFS/SMB). Scattered amongst the latter half of the book are some decent portions on virtual memory and x86 architectural features.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book gives excellent explanation of how an operating system works and will suit a new computer user or someone on a more advanced level. The only downfall of this book was its limited text on Linux. Otherwise its a great book and worth having!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a college-level text
This is not a college-level text.It includes shallow coverage of topics one would expect in an OS course, but not at a level appropriate of such a course, and then spends a tremendous amount of space on computer literacy issues, like how to use MS-DOS and Unix command lines, etc.I think the authors couldn't decide whether they wanted to write an OS text for non-majors, or a computer literacy text.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Python and Win32 for Pinheads
If you know nothing about Python, Visual Basic, scripting languages, Win32 API, MFC, COM, active scripting, Windows Networking and NT administration, then after you've read this book you'll get some very general idea of what these all are about: this book covers them all, as well as many other things. But whenever it comes to tell you something really interesting, authors just say: "well, it's out of the scope of this book, so let's stop here..."3-0 out of 5 stars Not for learning Python or programmin on Win32
This books is neither a Python tutorial book nor a Windows programming book. The title of this book greatly mis-represents the contents.4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, misses a few spots
Python is the best choice for people who want to implement COM in the software they develop - mostly due to its clear structure and object - oriented nature. This is where this book mostly comes.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok language intro, but missing context
This book provided a reasonable introduction to the language elements. As a complete novice, I learned enough to read CGI scripts. It was helpful to work on the well-done examples and then to look at the answers. I would have preferred a "log cracking" example rather than "secret words".Although I got the syntax of the hashes, I missed their glory in solving problems. The regular expression examples were good, but I could have used a full-blown example here also. This book sent me searching for CGI/web packages, such as the database package DBI (which may have been more useful than the DBM), the graphics package (GD), and more on writing HTML code from Perl scripts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shallow, but a Helpful Intro to Perl for Win32 People
I concur with the bulk of the reviews here: This is a shallow book, especially given Perl's scope. But it WILL help Windows folks understand many of the key Perl concepts that otherwise go unmentioned.4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, easy to understand.
I found that this book was good, particularly for the Win32 platform, and recommend it to anyone who uses Windows, regardless of their initial interest in programming. The only problems I had with the book are that the CGI (and OOP, which is introduced only in the context of CGI...but it could be so much more) chapter is left in limbo as far as being able to use any of the examples. If it were used on a Unix webserver (which are almost always setup to handle Perl CGI scripts), the examples would work fine. However, this is Perl for Win32, so IIS or PWS (if possible...I don't think it is, however) should be the web platforms targetted, and a "quick and dirty" setup instruction would be good to be able to test those examples. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Developing Windows NT Device Drivers
No good for windows 2000 or XP, otherwise very good and informative. Code available from authors sites, but buggy (on XP anyway). Shame it's out of date, if a legacy driver will do you then this book is very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Savior
I'm a high school intern and I knew nothing about drivers (other than installing them) 3 months ago.Now I have completed 2, an ISA and Parallel port driver. This book is really great for people new to the DDK and need a good foundation. The examples are clear, and the pace of the book is pretty slow (but steady).Once you get past the first 9-10 chapters you can pretty much skim for parts you need. The tips are especially helpful, as to why C++ OOP isn't suitable, to why 2 computers are absolutely necessary.Even if you plan on making WDM drivers, this book will be helpful.Oney's WDM book is really useless for beginners, and the DDK almost has no redeeming value, other than being very very heavy (oh, wait thats not good either). The net is surprisingly lacking of driver programming pages. Get this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Style and No Code Download/Disk - Still Somewhat Useful
This book is a useful reference for the NT/Win2k driver developer, but it has a number of disappointing flaws which make it less practical. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Like a grad. level paper: Helpful, if you can read it.
I got this book hoping for helpful ideas on how to debug multithreaded programs. This book has them, but the writing isn't that clear or readable. It reads like a grad. level paper more than a standard technical book that most of us are used to.

1-0 out of 5 stars COM Programming by Example
Caveat Emptor;
1-0 out of 5 stars Yeah Swank does it again
This is the worst example of a programming book I have ever purchased. The worst insult was the fact that even though on the cover it says using ActiveX. A whopping four pages are dedicated to ActiveX which is justscreen shots of what the MS IDE looks like and an explanation blatantlyproclaiming that if the reader wants to learn ActiveX then he or she needsto buy another book.Used car salesman and con artist selling an inferiorproduct use this type of tactic (the Bait and switch). Please heed mywarning save your money. Yeah John Swank does it again hopefully he willnot do it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
If you use API's, or want to use API's, then I suggest getting this book. There are so many API calls out there, that no book contains them all.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Companion
As a VB programmer you should have at least 2 books on yourshelf: Dan Appleman's Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to the Win32 APIand this one.The former teaches by showing - serving as a reference book when you are trying enhance the functionality of your VB application. The latter teaches by doing - allowing your mind to actively grasp the concepts behind API calls, structures, and pointers, instead of mindlessly hacking through APIs, tossing in variables, hoping for success. The puzzles in this book allow you to learn from your mistakes. Mr. Appleman explains his own logic as he works through the problem. For me, this is more valuable than just being told the answer as many books in this genre do. 4-0 out of 5 stars It is a useful book in programming

5-0 out of 5 stars the one I turn to
Never one to skimp on books, I ordered three with almost exactly the same title on COM/.NET Interop when I needed some information on the subject.Adam Nathan's book is by far my favorite.I've never found an answer in another book that wasn't in Nathan's (and have found many in his that I didn't find anywhere else).
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly is the Complete Guide
This book has been an invaluble resource on a .NET/COM interop project I've been working on.Don Box's quote on the cover sums up the title nicely, "This is the last book that should be written about COM programming. There is nothing left to say."
4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive interoperability book
Often finding an appropriate and effective bridge to .NET is a time consuming and problematic task, we had to do a lot of research and benchmarking to find an optimal solution. Having this book by Adam Nathan will save time and effort on building these bridges.

3-0 out of 5 stars OUT OF DATE!
I have been using portions of this book for five years and because it contains basic information, it gets 3 stars. That is the only reason.
1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete
This was probably a good book when it came out, but since then rpm has changed significantly. If Redhat would at least publish a consise list of the changes to the commands, I'd change my rating to 3 or 4 stars. As it is, you cannot use this book to diagnose problem in creating spec files or designing high-quality spec files.Until it is revised, you are better off looking at the man pages and how other people have written spec files.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any RPM developer

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy unless required
It's a theory book with little or no foundation on what you really need. I especially enjoyed the webpage that offers no help to a student have no other resource available. Although its a book with a comfortable read, it provides nothing more substancial to use. At one point one can actually use it as a reference for subjects that are not part of a programming language course. Please, there are other books much better than this one... unless you are required to buy the book for the course

3-0 out of 5 stars Deeply insufficient
My IT background: ten years as a Unix admin, pursuing a Master's degree in Telecom. Extensive familiarity with desktop OS's and apps both as a user and LAN admin.
2-0 out of 5 stars Use As Back Up to Your Other Study Guide "ONLY"
I will say that I am a fan of ExamCram2 Series of Study Guides, and that is what they are: "Study Guides". I was disappointed about the lack of material in this guide, do not rely on this book to pass the 70-272 Exam. If you pass the test just by reading this book you may have all ready had enough knowledge to pass. This book does not cover all the material in the exam by any means. The MeasureUp testing software is nice to get you use to the way some of the exam questions are. I would use this book to just go over questions and answers before you do a final write. I highly suggest to get Microsoft 70-272 Training Kit if you are new to alot of the material covered by this exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs a little more meat.
I recently became involved in a project to setup a course for the 2 new MCDST exam, 70-271 and 70-272. These new exams appear to give you an entry in the Microsoft arena with out requiring a full blown MCSE track. The book takes the finer points of the objectives and breaks it down in to 9 chapters.
