5-0 out of 5 stars Best OpenGL Book Ever (not counting the sequel to this book)
While all the information in this book can be found free on the net, (nehe.gamedev.net would be an excellent resource and is even mentioned in the book), the book combines all that knowledge into one location with each topic thoroughly covered in an easily accessible way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft specific treatments are pragmatic
Some reviewers have remarked that the book concentrates overly on OpenGL running on a Microsoft operating system. But most of the text on the usage of OpenGL is quite independent of the OS. And the passages specific to Microsoft are a reflection of the market reality on the desktop. I considered Astle to be quite reasonably pragmatic in offering the latter advice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Beginning? Yeah Right...
This book is utterly useless for both a beginner like me, and someone who knows C++ well. All it does is explain what each function does rather than teaching you how to use it. In the 2nd chapter alone, there's a 200-line program of all OpenGL functions that you're expected to understand by about 3 pages of explanation. I'm a beginning programmer who knows a lot about C, but not everything, and this book isn't helping me at all. Also, I can tell that it doesn't teach you much, as the end of book game example is slow and buggy. Go learn C++ then get an online tutorial or reference page, don't waste the money on this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Expensive series but surely valuable
My one and only complaint is the cost of these version specific books. The next OS X will be out in just a few months, but here we are with a 10.4 specific book. And of course this book by itself doesn't do much: you need others in the same series to have a good overall picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CORBA Book
This has to be one of the best CORBA books that I have read. It has helped me debug code and fix some really knotty problems. I found the exposition clear and easy to follow, and the index a useful tool. I don't think the authors intended it to be read cover-to-cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to CORBA
For my money, this book is worth every cent and more. The authors are knowledgable and articulate. If you know of a 3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for advanced users
As the title states this is a book for advanced programmers. Not the kind of book I would recommend to someone looking to pick up a book and the learn from it. Might serve as an excellent reference source. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For Administrators of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server Software
I purchased this book to help me create a more secure limited user environment for Windows XP Home which would also work with legacy software. After purchase I found out that the author assumes the user is administering either Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 Server software for large groups of users. The author details how to make mass registry changes using the Group Policy Editor which is not available in Windows XP Home. This book is probably the best resource available for its intended readers. While it was not intended for use with Windows XP Home, I've gained enough knowledge from the book to be able to successfully find on the internet the writings of other authors who have already worked out the registry hacks of XP Home needed to accomplish for its administrators one user at a time the same result as that obtained for those who administer large groups of users. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars lovely colour plates
Stop! If you have this book in hand, the first thing you should do is turn to the colour plates in the centre of the book. Slowly (there is no need to hurry) look at each. Don't worry if some of the labels use technical terms that you are unaware of. The book teaches you those.

1-0 out of 5 stars ebook a poor choice
If you are a Netware administrator, the ebook version of Harris' Netware 6.5 Admin book is a poor choice. I am not saying the book is bad, just the ebook. The description says it can be printed. It can't. You also need to know that it can only be read on two computers. The one you downloaded it on and one other that you install it on. Period. I made a mistake in handing over $30+ for this. If you think this would be a fair deal, go for it, but I know I will never buy another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best administrator's guide to date
With over 500 pages and several detailed appendixes the "NetWare 6.5 Administrator's Handbook" covers pretty much everything an administrator will need to know. Each chapter starts with a section called "Instant Access" where you will find a short summary of the information in the chapter. If you are familiar with the basics of the information but just can't quite seem to remember the specific command or specific steps to do something you can quickly get up to speed in this section without browsing through the whole chapter.5-0 out of 5 stars Netware - The truth in understanding what really works
As you can see, Netware is like a good bottle of wine, it just keeps on getting better. From a technology standpoint, Netware is a level above the rest. When it comes to security, and "it just works", Netware 6.5 gives you the features that other vendors dream of.The new features are true money saving technologies, dont rip and replace like the other vendor wants you to do, use what you have and let it all work together.People get rich on the lack understanding of others.Take it from someone that has been in the business over 20 years.Novell will and has risen above the rest and already is the best of breed "per Gartner", leaders in most technologies. This book will prepare you for the ease of administration which you have earned. ... Building Storage Networks is a very complete reference into storage. This book covers it all. If you know nothing about storage, by the time you get through the 590 pages you will have a complete knowledge of storage. 3-0 out of 5 stars SAN and NAS Beginnings
Nicely written material for the beginner to the SAN and NAS areas, but ultimately falls short of the depth that I was looking for in understanding SAN and NAS technologies.Covers the networking, protocols, and basic SAN and NAS architectures well.If you have a fairly good idea of the SAN and NAS solutions available today, than this book doesn't provide anything you haven't already been exposed. If your looking for a book that explains how and where SAN and NAS solutions might fit into your organization, than this is the book for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but a bit dated
A good overview...lots of useful information. Just be aware that this was written for CE 3.0, and 5.0 is current, with 6.0 in Beta, so there are detail differences. Still, a good starting point, and I can't find any more current books on the subject. So if you need to learn to use the Microsoft Platform Builder to do Windows CE embedded sysgens, this is the only game in town.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced for out of date information
Book is out of date and is exteremly overpriced.Anyone who attends a DevConference receives more information that is upto date than what was covered in the entire book.Waste of time and money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too out of date to be of use.
This book was written in 2001 (as were most of the positive reviews for it here on Amazon.)It only covers up to Platform Builder and WinCE 3.0, which are now up to version 5.As a result, the how-to parts, as well as the references, are mostly useless. In fact, I'm not sure any of the sections are relevant or can be trusted since WinCE has changed so much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, confusing and altogether irritating
I studied this book as an undergraduate in my junior year. I find it important to mention that the CG course was one of the most enjoyable and motivating courses I have taken. Sadly though, this book was one of the worst I studied (or rather, dealt with) for a number of reasons. I found it to be (and my classmates agree!):
2-0 out of 5 stars too much coverage, not even breadth
I must agree with J. Davis. After going through about 3-4 different types of CG courses and experimenting with my own seminars I find that this book is just way too wide of a scope. It seems like it tries to cram general computer graphics, interactive computer graphics, and advanced computer graphics in one... and do a bad job at it.Looking through the book I seriously doubt that some topics can be covered in one chapter, especially some of the viewing chapters. How can you cover all aspect of 2D and 3D viewing, even in breadth only and no depth, in one chapter? That's just ridiculous. It almost feels as if they are saying that you need a separate major for CG completely, one course for overview, one for 2d, one for 3d, one for interactive graphics, and a few for advanced topics in computer graphics... but the problem is that that is too narrow of a scope for any 4 year college degree.Plus you can't even start some of the basic discussions without general education in the fundamental math like linear algebra, calculus, discrete math, and so forth. So this book is sort of making a statement that can't be backed in the real world.Though this does offer a good overview for people who are just curious. It touches on a wide variety of things and has very practical approach to having a workable project using openGL.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not very complete
I teach an intro graphics course. I found that this text didn't cover the full set of things that are usually found in such a course (or covered them too superficially.) I do find its OpenGL examples embedded directly into the text to be useful for my students, but for me that doesn't forgive the lack of sufficient explanation of topics I care about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion piece to Adam Nathan's bible...
If you are doing .NET -> Native interop., this book should pretty have almost all that you need. Note that it does not cover COM (RCW) interop in that much detail and does not talk about CCW (COM -> .NET). However, the coverage of MarshalAs() and the clever examples that show how to deal with the complex DirectX structures are alone worth the price of admission.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to get started using the Win32 API w/ .NET
I am an intermediate programmer, who in the past, has done some Visual Basic 6 and Win32 API integration programming. After learning VB.NET and C#, I found that the .NET Framework was missing some functionality of the Win32 API, which surprised me a little since Microsoft is really pushing .NET as the "API" of choice for developers.5-0 out of 5 stars This book Rocks
Let's face it, .NEt is really cool, but it isn't a finished product. For everything else, there's this book.He has some Great examples and explains everything amazingly well.I'm a book junkie and this is definitely one of the best books I've come across recently.I think this book would be a tremendous asset to anyone who wants to learn how to get around .NET's current limitations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth my yearly salary!
I read it in one of the book store in three hours. I bought it a month later. It saved me several times. One of the best books I have ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical it is
This is the type of book that doesn't leave you with more questions than it answers. It doesn't just discuss the concepts and then you're on your own for coding. It gives you enough code and explanation so that you can implement mutex locks, semaphores, threads, etc.It doesn't force you to go search online for code samples.I refer to this book often, and not just when writing code for Unix.

2-0 out of 5 stars How is it different from his older version ?
Well he fixed all his bugs. He thinks he is in spiral model of life cycle publishing, Good Grief!

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Basics of using ATL server
I'm glad that there's finally one book about atl server, but this one seems to have been written in haste. Sure it shows you how to hook up to a database and pull out records, but the examples are not nearly as complex as msdn's . In particular, the caching section is seriously lacking...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Addition to ATL
The ATL Server library is the perfect addition to ATL, adding the ability to create web services and web applications with the light-weight model of ATL. I found this book very useful for getting new members of my development team up to speed on the basics of ATL Server development (both those with previous ISAPI experience and those without). 5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to ATL Server
This is an excellent book on the definitive technology for VC++ developers wanting to write web applications.ATL Server is the evolution of ISAPI; better, faster and much easier to write. If you are comfortable with C++ template programming and attributed Visual C++, you will find this framework a joy to work with.Just like ATL, ATL Server is streamlined, high performance and easy to extend.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It wastes space by covering irrelevent detail
My problem with this book can be surmised as
5-0 out of 5 stars A good and helpful book
I did found this book very helpful. And I do recommend this book for anyone how is starting with OpenGL. A well writen book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Quite a good book but many things to be improved
To me, this book is at average rating. The explanation of the book is quite confusing in some sense. First of all, if you follow the book sample coding by including "OpenGL.h" header file, you may find that it does not work. In fact, the header file name is "OpenGLSB.h". For this small thing which the author is failed to correct it before the publication of the book, it is a failure. For beginner like me, it is really a bad experience to have first sample coding does not run as expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential for device drivers and other NT internals
This is an amazing book. It's not a tutorial for a building device driver. For device driver developers, it is an essential reference for understanding NT's kernel system. This book is also great for those who are not building device drivers but want to understand the NT kernel. The chapters on virtual memory, I/O architecture and I/O managers are totally worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
If you are writing Windows Device Drivers, this is one of 3 books you absolutely must have. Buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!! Great for Fundamentals
Storage Networking Fundamentals: An Introduction to Storage Devices, Subsystems, Applications, Management, and File Systems
3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading book title
This is a good storage book overall but... released under wrong title. If you erase "networking" part out of the title, it will be exactly what the book is about. Author himself emphasize the book is not really about "connecting function". He also introduces some new terms and even though these are quite acceptable for the discussion matter those terms barely might be seen somewhere else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent at the Fundamentals
This book was not what I expected...I pre-ordered it as soon as I saw that Cisco Press had a new storage book coming out, and I expected that at least some of its content would cover Cisco's storage products (the MDS line in particular).I got the book the week it came out, looked at the TOC and was immediately disappointed. That's the bad news. The good news is that I read the book anyway and was very pleasantly suprised. This is an awesome book about "storage networking fundamentals".Had my expectations been in line with the very clear title, I wouldn't have been disappointed. The title is not misleading, I just assumed that it would have MDS content.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just plain wrong
This is a collection of very basic shell scripts I found completely useless. The author presents the book in an advanced format, not giving much underlying information or hand-holding; however the information contained is very beginner level.
3-0 out of 5 stars geeks only
Taylor does some neat stuff with shell scripts, but he doesn't spend much time explaining what goes on in them. Each is accompanied by a terse paragraph explaining "how it works", which generally only addresses one particular aspect of the script (ie, POSIX-style "variable slicing"). Shell syntax is terse and many of the reserved keywords and functions are not self-evident. If you don't know, for example, what "${#remainder}" returns, Taylor won't help you; you will have to look it up in a tutorial or a reference work elsewhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars As we say in Maine, "Wicked Good!"
I have spent thousands of dollars on computer and technical references; I have a library full of them. There is one book however that sits on my office desk and has never made it to the library - Wicked Cool Shell Scripts.I have read, referenced and recommended it many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for filling in the gaps!!!!!
I have recently had to undertake a PCI project that required detailed information on PCI configuration of devices, including P2P bridges. I have a couple of other resources, however, this book bridges the gap between software and hardware. Especially the chapters on configuration (Chaps 17, 18 and 19). I highly recommend it!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Software Developers
Basically, this book is very similar to the PCI SIG specification in many respects (without the hefty PCI SIG membership fee).2-0 out of 5 stars Not too different from the PCI Spec from PCI-SIG

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Prep Book
All you need to pass the C.N.A. exam 50-653 is the patience to read this book and an understanding of the concepts presented therein.I easily passed the test with a greater than 700 score.I read the book twice and set up my own Novell test network so I could do all the labs, which is probably more than most people need to do.
