Editorial Review

Writing kernel-mode Windows NT programs--such as file-system drivers (FSDs), filter drivers, and antivirus programs--poses a challenge to even experienced Windows programmers. It's hard enough to get these programs to work, but getting them to live peacefully with other kernel programs and NT itself is an art. Nagar sorts through the mechanics of writing such programs in this book, which is no mean feat considering that Microsoft provides no documentation for its development kit. The author begins by orienting the reader to NT's kernel mode, detailing what runs there, how the various programs interact, and what you need to keep in mind when developing software for the kernel mode.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Available to order from OSR Press
NOW AVAILABLE: Reprint of Windows NT File Systems Internals
5-0 out of 5 stars Very unique but has to be read with other recent materials.
This book is by far, one of my most favorite books. It has been the only complete text book that explains the details of the Windows NT File Systems Framework. If you are to buy the book these days you would not feel the value of the book as I felt it when I started reading it six years ago. Nowadays, there are some other literatures that provides deeper coverage for certain topics like the OSR materials and the first IFS conference (both are available as part of the IFS kit). But still, the book remains the only complete reference. To get most of the benefits of this book, it is better that you look at the FASTFAT source code that comes with the IFS kit. The main drawback of the book is the lack of deep coverage for network based file system drivers. OSR materials provided with the IFS kit are essential to have better knowledge about File System FILTER drivers. Read the book while watching the videos of the first IFS kit conference, this will help a lot. Finally, if you are new to file system drivers then, be more patient while reading the book. You would not get everything from the first reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info, but much repeating
This is certainy a must have for any Windows 32-bit file system developer. It reveals great secrets, make sense of the NT IFS chaos, and make Your IFS nightmares go away. It's a great book, but much of it is presented in mostothers, and that's the only bad thing )like memory managment, cachemamaneretc.). Thanks, RN. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for any IT library
This book is just awesome in that it covers different Windows libraries from Perl. The material is rather advanced in both usage of Windows libraries and Perl language usage. The topics are organized in common administrative areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start to Learn OS X Programming
This book is a great start to learn the best OS X programming technology. As a professional developer. The title says it "Learning Cocoa with Objective C".Avoid the book "Cocoa in a Nutshell" until you know Cocoa and Objective C and want a good refeerence.
3-0 out of 5 stars OK...
While this book is very detailed and has a lot of information in it about Cocoa programming, it starts off too quickly. You might be discouraged by the assumptions the author makes about how much C (and programming in general) you know. If you are experienced in computer programming, then you will find this book to be a blast and will learn objective -C in no time at all. However, if you aren't too good with programming, start off with some online tutorials or other books, as you will get lost after reading the first two chapters or so.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but not the best book
A very popular book, and greatly improved in its second edition.Very example and tutorial oriented; somewhat out of date at this point, however. Helps the user learn Interface Builder, ProjectBuilder and Objective-C, too.Possibly a bit shallow to get the reader writing their own Cocoa programs from scratch, but a good introduction.Ultimately, probably not as recommended for a first purchase as Cocoa Programming by Scott Anguish or Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X by Aaron Hillegass. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book - better than Beginning Direct3d Game Programming
I have this book somewhere around my house and it explained things in good detail - I read this book when I was 14. I understood a lot of the concepts from knowing a bit of Windows programming. It helps you to create things in an order. First set everything up - use that and build objects, make them 3d, rotate, translate, blend, light them, texture, build textured fonts, create lists to create multiple objects, particles - but some how a lot of what I read on this book is very closely similar to http://nehe.gamedev.net's tutorials, but the book is straight forward working through unlike NeHe's is what people have requested after Lesson 19. Buy this book over Beginning Direct3D Game Programming by Prima Tech - that book is the worst, its not even a programming book in my opinioin, now this book teaches you what you should know about programming using a brand new Graphics API, and even how to setup and make a game- but you do most of the work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fake !!!
Well, this book, in it's first part is a simple poor copy of the OpenGL reference manual. The second part is simply copies from what we can get from Nehe and other OpenGL tutorials.
4-0 out of 5 stars This book is ok.
If your new to open gl and know your C and arent up all night and awake. The book doesnt get bogged down and treads lightly on most topics. I hate books that write too much on topics that you just want to work and move on. At my uni this book is constantly on loan and then it went missing. So i bought it. As with most things. One book is never enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Simplified MFC Solution Reference
There are two MFC books real-world MFC programmers should keep as future references.VC++ MFC Extensions by Example by John Swanke is one of them. This is an essential MFC extension.Swanke presents powerful, yet surprisingly really simple fully implemented solutions to questions MFC programmers most often ask.For example, the author provides a solution to a folder selection dialog box.Swanke presents elegant solutions that are so simple, yet effective, they make Visual C++ Wizard seem overly complicated!5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful examples of any MFC book
The great thing about this book is it addresses so many situations that MFC programmers find themselves in, and it seems like you're always trying to reinvent the wheel to deal with them.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction to Operating Systems
The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the basics of operating systems which includes memory manager, processor manager, file manager, device manager and network manager. This part is presented in such a way that it can be easily comprehended by even novices and the authors did an excellent job here. The second part of the book deals with specific operating systems. Details about MS-DOS, Windows 2000, UNIX, OpenVMS Alpha and OS/390 operating systems are provided in this part. While there are few locations where the explanation is not very clear, for the most part it is understandable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to a complicated subject
This book really hits the important info about a complicated subject. When I was studying OS in college, I didn't need to create operating systems, I needed to know what they're all about. This was the required book in my OS class and I could read and understand even the complicated stuff. It's a good starting place. This is one of only 2 textbooks that I didn't sell when I graduated. It's still a good reference. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Anemic, Obsolete, and Contains factual errors
When I received this book in the mail, I was curious as to why it was including a large section on MS-DOS. While there is historical and pedagogical justification for covering MS-DOS, the cover text claims that MS-DOS is one of "the three most widely-used operating systems". This statement is a bit dated. While MS-DOS may have formed the basis for early versions of MS-Windows, current versions are NT based. The book's discussion of the relationship between MS-DOS, Windows, and Windows-NT is a bit muddled.

4-0 out of 5 stars OpenGL Condensed
In "OpenGL Distilled", Paul Martz details the essential elements of the OpenGL 2.0 API used in regular development. As the title describes, the book is a concise 266 pages that span eight chapters and four appendices. The book is published by Addison-Wesley Professional (ISBN: 0321336798) and is retails for $35 USD.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good handbook for beginning OpenGL programmers
I often get asked for good starter books that can teach proper OpenGL concepts. The problem with most of these books is that concepts are expressed en masse with huge code blocks, often obscuring the actual concept being expressed. In this reguards, "Distilled" is that. The author expresses a concept, discusses relevant caveats and practices, then endows us with a short example. The authors coding standards and style are kept minimally intrusive.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good comprehensive book.
Overall a reasonable text to learn Distributed OS concepts. Its coverage of distributed algorithms is good. I would recommend reading the original papers for a better understanding though. The chapters are well organizedand it is a good intruductory book for a grad student. Its coverage ofdistributed database concepts is rather superficial though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple to understand; has good examples
This book is very useful to get a good idea about the advanced issues in OS. But the only problem is that no particular topic could receive in-depth coverage. Perhaps it is a common problem for all books. Too much has been learnt about OS to be put in 500 pages.I recommend this to anyone who wants to get the gist without plodding through miles and miles of jargon and advanced mathematics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro Book!!! Best Programming book ever read
This is the best programming book that I read from page 1 to the last page. I hope Jones can write more books on MFC or Visual C#. Not only did I learn MFC concepts and programming skills, but also I found Chapter 1 and 2 are very useful because they are basic and fundamental to C++ that I sometimes forgot. I love the pace and layout of this book. User-defined messaging and modeless are explained in a very nice way. The Appendice are very useful too.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but not too shabby
MFC programming is a bear, especially in VC++ 6.0 (not .NET). This book does a decent job of introducing key concepts, and comes with a mountain of sample code on CD. If MFC/VC++ were my first programming language, I would look for a book geared more towards total complete novices; otherwise, it does the trick. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best MFC Starter book out there
I bought this around 1999, long after I started programming in MFC.The one regret I had was not buying this book sooner.Just the format alone of this book is priceless. The question-answer format makes it very easy to find things and makes a great quick reference with good examples.I am writing this review almost 6 years later because this book still helped me out a lot even after years of writing MFC stuff. The great thing about the book is it covers a lot of MFC material and hits on things you may not use day to day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book

3-0 out of 5 stars Some pretty good tricks
If you are looking for details about MFC this is NOT the book to buy. If you are looking for some "tricks" well then maybe this will work for you. 1-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for the insanity to stop...
Micro$oft is famous for its ability to push out new development technologies. The reason behind this planned obsolesence is obvious, every time they come out with something new people will have to open their wallets to "keep up." 5-0 out of 5 stars A very easy introduction to COM.
Not as good as "Inside COM" which I also rate as a 5 star book but is simpler to understand and can be used very effectively in conjunction with the above named book. Very reasuring to the reader.

2-0 out of 5 stars Leaves out important code / project settings
I must admit I have just read the 5 first chapters these last 3 days and I feel I've gained a deeper understanding of COM. - However the authors does not state how to set up the VC++ project settings to get the code to work.- I've been fighting of Linker errors most of the time since I startedtyping in the code. It may be I am not proficient enough in VC++ but with alittle help from the book I could be focusing on COM instead of VC++quirks. Read more

Editorial Review

This guidebook shows you how to be productive quickly using Visual Basic (VB) tools for the Windows CE platform. The book starts with a guide to installing and using the Microsoft VBCE Toolkit, and then outlines the major differences between ordinary VB development and the (restricted) CE version. After introducing a simple time-manager sample, Roof offers helpful tips for dealing with the reduced capabilities of hand-held devices.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basis for productive development
In earlier versions of this work, I found Larry Roof's text and examples to be a very good foundation for VB programmers who are getting into the Windows CE/Pocket PC world. When Microsoft first released Visual Basic for the CE environment, it was a frustrating experience for developers. You were never quite sure which bits of code would work the same and which would not, and the online help and debugging tools were nowhere near the level of "regular" Visual Basic.Well, Microsoft has incrementally improved the product, but a good book on VB for CE is almost essential for any VB programmer who wants to work on the handheld systems. And Larry Roof's book meets that requirement.4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro & intermediate information
I agree that 'professional' is a stretch with the title. The material's scope is from beginner to intermediate. Also, because I am working with Windows CE 3 & Visual Tools 3, some of the information is clealy dated(time for the next version of the book). However, as an experienced VBdeveloper, new to the windows CE platform, the book was an excellent firststep. There are several books on windows CE, but few devoted to VB &CE.The reason is obvious -- VB tools for Windows CE 3 is very limited, and any serious application development will require C++.I recommend thisbook for VB developers new to the CE platform.Just don't expect to beable to run all the examples as is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visual Basic Windows CE Programming --- another review
I thought the book was very well documented with helpful examples. One of the other reviews was simply put "out of date". Concepts and ideas never go out of date, and this book is the first one with completeexamples covering topics which are directed at the type of product itsupports. I have not found any other book with the explicit subject matterof VB for CE development as this one. I would suggest this book to anyonewho is interested in getting directly into VB-CE development especiallyASP/internet access for data. Cheers....! ... Read more

Andy Lester, Chris Stone, Chuck Toporek and Jason McIntosh's MAC OS X Tiger In A Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference is also a winner: it provides an overview of OS X Tiger Version 10.4 and focuses on the Unix layer, covering over 300 of Tiger's Unix commands, reviewing basic system and network features and functions, and providing a reference chick has been tested and checked against Tiger for optimum, flawless performance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grab some Jolt and your favorite junk food - it's Mac/Unix geek time!
"Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell" isn't your typical tome on "everything you need to know to use Mac OS X." If you're looking for an easy to read, richly illustrated book to curl up with on a rainy day with a cup of coffee, this isn't it. But if you're interested in the Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X, then grab a six pack of Jolt and your favorite junk food, because there's a heck of a lot of information packed into this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for GW Admin
This is definetely the book you must have if you administer a GroupWise system.I have gone to the Novell course and have all of the material from it, but I use this manual 99% of the time. There are a few items that I wish they went more in-depth on or explained a bit better, but over-all everything is detailed quite well...plus the book is already 948 pages long so I will cut them some slack.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for the GW admin
You can probably get by with the Groupwise newsgroup and the TIDs on Novell's website to configure and maintain your GW system, but its much easier to have all the info you need in one place. I bungled a test install and then another one, and then got it right when I read the book and understood why I was doing what I was doing. Read more
