ATL internals is the final word on ATL. No other book is needed to master ATL. Don't do ATL or COM without it

Too many bad raps for this book!
I had all but given up on CE after struggling with the miserable VB CE kit on and off for several years, till I opened up Burdick's book and tried several of his programs.I was astounded! They all worked flawlessly and I was off to a start with CE and C development.I'm by no means an expert at C but had no problems in following the code examples and getting some serious applications to work.I've looked at some other CE programming books but I really wouldn't be without this one.

where is the "how-to"
I recently had a chance to review this book. It's very normal. I've been doing WinCE for 4 yrs, can't find anything up-to-date in this book. Any WIN32 programmer will feel the same. It's more than a Programmer's Guide

Excellent book.

This book SUCKS!!!
Don't waste your money on it like I did.
An Organized Introduction
This book is a more concise, better organized version of the DDK documentation, minus the reference material.It does a good job of painting a picture of driver architecture and gets you familier with the terminology involved.However, it does not provide much insight or real-world tips, and in fact the regurgitation of Microsoft definitions and propoganda gets a little tiresome.This book does not go into much detail and is not a reference book.After you've read most of this book you can easily rely on the DDK documentation and never flip through these pages again.

Though not a textbook, Gives Very Good Idea ..
I looked at lot of Unix system programming books,none of them explain how it is implemented in the system and how to use it. If someone is new to Unix Systems programming, this book gives qute a boost. It is easy to read book.
I was lucky not to buy this book!
From other reader's reviews, I came to a conclusion that this is not something that I need. I wanted to get some information on how experts objectify sockets, IPC's etc. In other words,how other people implementsclasses on top of raw UNIX system calls wrapping all the low level details.Is there anyone out there who has already done this? Help.

Very nice book
I only bought this book because I needed to get an image of how fixed length records are implemented using C++. The book answered my question and provided me with examples. The examples compiled without a problem. easy to use

This text was used for a junior-level File Manipulation Techniques course.We skipped around quite a bit in this book and did not use any of the C++/Unix material.I think (and I'm sure my professor does) that this book could be stripped down a quite a bit to present more topics when used for the classroom.What is presented is done well.This is a well-rounded text that should appeal to students and professionals alike.However, from the student's perspective, there is a lot of superfluous material.It is still one of the best, if not then it is the best, book on file structures and algorithms.Read more

Loaded with useful information and intermediate to expert advice
If you have a Nokia series 40 or series 60 phone, this book is indispensable. Every chapter has something even a old hand with Nokia phones will not know. Codes to find the phones version and address information, ways to customize the menus, and alternative programming and settings. In all, this book is "the manual that didn't come in the box."

An incomplete work by Clarke.
Having learned most of what I know about Netware 4.11 from Clarke's books, I took a leap and bought both the admin and CNE books that he authored for Netware 5.1. I was disappointed. The books lack the anecdotes that break up the monotonous material, and it's evident that Clarke wasn't enthused with writing this book. Disappointed too!
I started seriosly my study with this book.The good one is, the style he (the author)talk to us in the book, I really like it! Disappointed - -
After passing NetWare Administration 5.1 using the companion CNA 5.1 book as my primary study resource, I was hoping for a similar experience with this book.I am finding that while the CNE 5.1 book does cover much of the material for the remainder of the CNE examinations, it is a bit light in some critical areas.I have expanded my studies with another CNE series from Novell Press, a set of third party CBT's, and even broke down and took the official Advanced Administration 5.1 course.I'm not at all certain that I would have passed Advanced Admin or NDS Design if I had trusted just this book to get me prepared.Read more

Monopoly
The information is helpful and appears to be complete.The empirical knowledge implied by frequent contrasts between the specifications and what happens "on the wire" is impressive. Excellent technical reference
I really like this book. The internals of the CIFS protocol is not a subject for the faint hearted, but Chris has really tackled it well. This is just the right book for people like me who want to understand what is going on on their network at the bits and bytes level. In-depth discussion of CIFS implementation.
If want to know CIFS/SAMBA/NetBIOS internals, this is the book to read. It goes into detail of CIFS implementation. You will find discussion on structures, functions, and architecture of CIFS. This is a very good book for programmers who are working in this area. Although the book is useful for general users of CIFS but the real audience are the programmers and people who want to go into in-depth knowledge of CIFS implementation. Nice addition to my OSX UNIX library
Since I converted I have found OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly and accessible. Some people who had never used it before type commands and work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys" in movies! This book is very helpful and well written and it is serves as a very nice reference. I paired this book with that "UNIX Essentials" DVD I found here on Amazon and it is complete OS UNIX course recorded and this book and a video they contribute one another greatly. You improve the reading and by reading you improve what you have seen.
The Definitive Guide to Panther

Hefty, deep and well written
It's tough to tell this from Amazon, but this book is a thousand pages, which makes it quite a hefty tome. But that doesn't make it a doorstop. There are screenshots, but they are, by in large, useful and relevant, and the book doesn't use them to tell a click by click story of the interface.

very nice general OS X UNIX book, good way to get involved...
I like easy to read book and I also had assumed that learning UNIX is not necessarily has to a struggle. This book stood up to my expectations almost perfectly. It does not overwhelm with technical details and does not press too much. I also followed someone's review advice and purchased "UNIX Essentials" DVD that is complete OS X UNIX course recorded. These two nicely complement one another. You watch it and you read it. If you didn't catch it from the first try you watch it again and read it again. In two months I found myself confident to that extend that gave advises to our system administrator and he accepted them because there were subjects that he wasn't completely sure. I can't overstate how much I have learned from them. Don't be naive, though. You will have to learn and memorize many things. The fact of owning neither book nor DVD will not make you knowledgeable, but if you will work it trough, trust me, you will surprise many people around!

Excellant book....
Before start reading this book, I had little or no exprience. But after reading first few chapters, I just started with good confident.
An OK book in a very poorly covered field
I generally agree with the reviewer who expressed amazement at the almost universal acclaim for this book.It is a *workable* treatment of KornShell 88 in a field of also-rans.Given that few if any books are better, I give it three stars because with little else available, you *can* use this book to learn and deal with KornShell 88. Palm OS Programming The Developer's Guide
The information was not as detailed in some areas as I had hoped. It would be a handy reference guide except! The pages are separating from the binder and I expect that in a few months I will have many lose pages stuffed in the book, Especially in areas I reference often. A good reference book should withstand repeated usage, and this one will not.This book was bought new in mid November and has had just one months useage.

This really filled the void between the amazing hands-on "Lions Book" and Maurice Bach's "The Design of the UNIX Operating System", introducing the reader to some more modern implementation of the UNIX operating system.

If you are already a BSD kernel expert you might use this as a reference. If you're an advanced "userland" programmer who wants to start learning about kernel internels, this is one way to proceed but, it is very, very difficult. very good, nice, funny, professional kernel hacking
