5-0 out of 5 stars The S-Plus "Mustard" book
This is an *essential* tool for anyone using S-Plus.The book is well laid out, supplementing and complementing the manuals. In addition, the authors provide libraries that expand many of the routines in S-Plus.Ifyou use S-Plus and do not program directly in S yourself, this book shouldbe on your shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to using S-Plus
This is a fantastic book on using S-Plus.I would have given it 5 stars had its treatment been given in a more clear way.Nonetheless the S language is well presented and many statistical analyses are sampled usingS-Plus.In fact, this is also a strong applied stats book, with S codegiven for each topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for embedded goodies
Embedded processor are becoming more powerfull and popular. Even a small embedded processor can compete with the first PC's. Because of this, there is a great demand for OS's for these processors. This is were Xinu comes in (Full multitasking kernel, filesystem, semaphores, timers, device drivers...) and best of all, it is not resource hungry (<12k flash with a minimum of 4K ram).
1-0 out of 5 stars Not Useful
This book focuses exclusively on XINU, the OS written mainly by Comer. I will say this book is useful in the time when there was no open source, decent OS, however with the advent of Linux, I can't see any reason to study XINU anymore. Although XINU has most of the functions a modern OS should possess, there is essentially NO application written for this OS and it is only used by a handful of universities in their OS courses(for example, Purdue University, WL). If you really want to learn OS, I would recommend you to learn Linux which has relatively superior documentations(and is far more useful and stable than XINU). Some universities also used other experimental OSs like Nachos. I know nothing much on these OSs, therefore I make no comments.4-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but informative...I take back that statement.
For the most part this book is informative. If you have no idea of how a basic Operating System functions, or what it's responsibilities are, then this book will definitely clue you in. However, this book seemed to fall short of what the writers promised. For example, the version of XINU described in this book boots from DOS. I am suspicious of any operating system that boots from another operating system and then uses the services of it...it reminds me of Microsoft Windows 3.1. The OS also uses and relies on some of the PC's BIOS routines and services. While that technique makes the OS portable on different PCs, it limits its use only to PCs and hides a lot of operations that (in my opinion) should be shown. After reading it a few times, I found that the book was quite helpful after all. The OS has been ported to many other CPU's. The full source code can be found on the internet. The OS is quite powerful but still is simple (I was able to port the code to run on a 68010 project of mine; seeing the ported versions and the book's theory was enough to guide me). A decent book, it doesn't describe an operating system 'from the ground up', but comes close to it. Sure there are other operating systems out there with open source, but how many of those tell you what each function of the code does and what role these functions play in a OS? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A weak text on storage security
Securing storage sub-systems is an important, but omitted task. Will this text help you to do what is necessary to secure your storage fabrics? On my third read, the answer remains illusive. Important parts that should be part of standard decision protocol are missing. Will the text help you to understand security as a general topic? Certainly, the text attempts to apply CISSP concepts to the storage security topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for security planning and implementation
Prior to this book I was ignorant of a lot of data storage issues. This book opened up areas to me that I had previously overlooked as I always took data storage for granted. The equipment breakdown and analysis was the most concise that I've ever seen.Nearly every page brought me a new item to learn or ponder. The sections on packet breakdown and network latency were fascinating. The information in this book is fully explained and with the author's help, easy to understand. The chapter(8) on designing and implementing a sound data security program almost serves as a blueprint as the steps and procedures are clearly outlined for the reader. This book provides BIG TIME info to the IT professional.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage of an oft-overlooked topic
What does "Information Security" mean to you? To many, it means firewalls and encryption. To some, it means intrusion detection systems. Chances are the words "file servers" weren't high on your list, but they probably should be. After all, "information security" is about information, and when it's not flying across the network it's got to be stored somewhere, right? In fact, the security of the storage mechanism is often overlooked, which makes it an attractive target for attackers. In their new book, Storage Security, Chirillo and Blaul take a comprehensive look at this often-ignored subject.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Examples without explanation
Hi,
1-0 out of 5 stars Great For Programmers Who Enjoy Wasting Time
Sometimes the author shows the code you need to create a certain result and where to put it.Sometimes he does not.You have to do a lot of second-guessing when you read this book.I even tried looking through the CD to see if I could get the source code in context with the example application--na da, zip! Some of the code is outdated. If you are using Visual Studio 6 or later, forget this book. You will have tons of error messages. This is not the author's fault. This is the fault of those pointy-headed pinheads at Microsoft. They actually think changing the names of classes and functions is some sort of upgrade(lol). The book would be a lot better if it started with a simple application and expanded on that application showing where all the little code snippets go in the source files and how they work.Wouldn't that be nice?

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful application oriented book
While learning something new, it's always a dilema whether to learn concepts first, of whether to learn the application first. It'sa lot easier, if you have a book like this, which maintains a proper balance for you.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of useful techniques
I do not deny that the style of writing can be terse at some points. However this book covers a lot of ground on how to write a good , thread safe codes. The class included has provided a lot of usable codes that can be used in complex sowftware projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed the Way I Designed My Own Software Development
Learning what this book had to teach was a pivotal point in my software development career... it was the first time I came to an awareness of looking at HOW the design and development process occurred in my job, and really thinking about WHY we did certain things the way we did.My own development methods changed drastically after reading this book, and my own visible changes have had an impact on those that work with me (i.e. it got them thinking as well about how they did their development).ESR's book spent a fair amount of time in the details of some specific software, but those parts came across to me as examples backing up earlier points he had made rather being "I recommend using this software" endorsements.I've learned from ESR's writings that there's almost always an upper-level awareness to be discovered, whether he's explicitly making a point to back up something he's saying, or whether it's something implicit that steers your own thinking towards something he's said.I highly recommend this book to anyone who's been doing software development (especially in a group environment and steered/constrained by that group's processes) for at least a year, perhaps two.If you've been doing this kind of work for more than two years, and never thought deeply at WHY you design your software creations the WAY you do, it's time for you to pick up this book and see what you can glean from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surpassed my expectations
When I first started reading this book, I expected to hear a considerable amount of Microsoft trashing and everything else that follows from fanatical Microsoft haters. However, what I found was an easy to follow book that illustrates many aspects of Unix programming, explains why they work, and shows examples of all of them.
1-0 out of 5 stars Where is the beef?
I join the other reviewer who complained about the book having no code at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars might be useful...
I purchased this book after deciding to port a win32 app to winCE.I began reading it from the beginning, but quickly found myself skimming. This book has code fragments that go on for pages and pages.Very useful IF you're trying to do exactly what the author is doing.Otherwise not very useful. And there are NO screenshots. For example, a segment in the first chapter is devoted to how to create CommandBands.I'm thinking, okay, but what is a commmandband? One small screenshot of one would have helped tremendously.5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifying Porting
A truly thorough explaination of how and when to port Win32 applications to Windows CE.Using this book, I was able to evaluate development projects to determine when to port and when to rewrite.I was also able to relate familiar Win32 APIs and other programming constructs to their mobile counterparts. This book fills critical void in the mobile applications market. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great for beginners in CORBA, however you have to be a little more than advanced in JAVA or C++ to understand the underlying material. It provides good examples and I figured out how to better manage my IDL files/functions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CORBA book for Java Developers
As a Sr. Java developer, I was looking for a good CORBA book with a Java slant. Until I found this one, I wasn't having much luck. Look no further. There are lots and lots of examples in Java (and C++). I've only read 100 pages, but so far, I really like this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
It's a pretty good book, though, not really comparable to "Advanced CORBA programming with C++". If you really want a good CORBA reference book get Henning and Vinoski's book. The best thing about this book is that it also includes Java which makes it a pretty good buy. Not all of the code is available electronically on the book's website which can make it cumbersome if you want to actually try to run some of examples.... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a power user book
I purchased this book sight unseen since it was referenced as a "Power-User" book. I've used Macs for the last ten years and consider myself savy but no tech-geek or mac expert. Yet almost everythingin this book i already knew, both in terms of mac use in general and 8.5specifically. To be fair, I did find a handful of useful tips or insightinto several areas i was less familiar with, but this accounts for maybe 5%of the book. On the other hand, if you are new to Mac and/or 8.5 this bookis excellent and I would give it a 5 star rating. For power users, it getsone star for the few tidbits it offers mac savy users. The included CD,like all book CDs, strikes me as pointless since its almost always out ofdate by publication time. For its steep $50 list price, the book offerspower users little value for their money.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for MacOS 8.5 users
At first glance, I thought that this was just another of those too little too late books that seem to be all too common. Not so, this has to be the first book I have ever had on the Mac Os, that is worth the purchase price. It covers all aspects of Apple's MacOS 8.5 and is a goldmine ofinformation. The book is also loaded with information on many usefulshareware and commercial applications that enhance the Apple systemsoftware and demonstrates many useful solutions that will greatly enhanceyour Mac operationsThe section on Applescript is excellent for people whoare using or learning to use Applescript, or for those who just want tounderstand scripting in general. This book also describes connecting Macsto various PC operating systems including NT and Window 95 this sectionalone is worth the price of the book. Having used Macs and Pc's for manyyears I was pleasantly surprised by this excellent resource. A must havefor anyone using MacOS 8.5. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good first chapter
The author had a good idea in Chapter 1 for developing the rationale for COM. It was an interesting read, and educational, without hardly even mentioning the term, COM. From there the writing went downhill. I'm an experienced programmer with a fair amount of prior exposure to COM, but the author lost me before the end of his 90-page chapter 2 on designing interfaces. He failed to introduce new terms before using them. He strung dozens of topics together with no apparent connection or organizing framework. Rationale was missing. I labored over this chapter but gained very little understanding. The text was well edited for the most part, but three stars overall is generous.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad style
The book is incredibly difficult to read from cover to cover.Instead of just getting to the point, there is so much verbiage as to make the whole thing unintelligible. The examples, with the VCR/TV analogy in the first chapter, were simply confusing and could have been made more clear IMHO.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the reading
I found this book to be an excellent reference from the minute I opened it. I began by paging through the chapters but almost immediately found areas that helped with the project I was currently working on.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to have
I have not used shell scripting in the long time. I ordered this book and it helps me refresh a lot about Unix and shell scripting leanrt in school many years ago as undergraduate student. The book is well-written and will keep you excited. One important thing is: practice as you are reading. By the time you finish the book you should be able to grab much from the book. I downloaded the Sun Solaris 9 that I installed on x86 computer and I am playing with some flavors of shell writing small shell scripts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro Book for Real Beginners
I came from purely Windows environment and I know nothing about UNIX or Linux except a few C commands many years ago. I tried a few books like shell scripting, learning the shell and by example, but I gave up as their speed was too fast for a beginner like me. Only after a few intro pages, these books started to write complex commands which I was confused and unable to continue. The worst thing is, most of them don't explain in details what those commands do and expect readers to know. This book does not assume you know basic UNIX commands, and it covers the basics in first section. It has short chapters and each of them tries to teach you the basic concepts in one area with simple examples. This is the book that gives you confidence to move on and it does not try to feed you with too much knowledge at a time. After reading this book, you are equipped with basic idea of what shell scripting is and able to move on with advanced books.A very good step-by-step book for beginners who know very little or nothing about UNIX shell programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of the shell!
Becoming thouroghly proficent in various shells and being able to write shell scripts whether simple or of vast complexity is a fundemental requirement for becoming *NIX savvy.Whatever your flavor, Linux, OpenBSD, Solaris - you must know shell scripting to be taken seriously.

4-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
good stuff.could have been more advanced.questionable organization (much like windows itself.)still, the tips and tricks picked up more than paid for the volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for anyone living with/supporting/rolling out Windows XP
Windows XP is a fact of life for most of us.The sad fact of the matter is that Windows is bloated and sick - loaded with performance/security/stability robbing settings and "extras".Karp's excellent volume - simple enough for the layman but deeply valuable even for the experienced lays out how to pare down XP to fighting form. You can't change XP's basic nature - but you can improve matters significantly.Windows XP Annoyances for Geeks is well organized (like all O'Reilly books) and full of practical, real-world tips.If you must support or roll out XP in a corporate environment, then this book becomes essential to your survival (or at least your sanity). Is it the last word?Probably not - but you will not actually read or use much more than you get here.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gives you a less annoying XP
Isn't that a neat picture on the cover? Certainly grabs one's attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora, Fourth Edition
I found this book to be very readable and a good way of getting up to speed on Linux. The book: (i) guides you how to load Fedora onto your computer, (ii) describes how Linux works, and (iii) discusses Linux applications, networking and scripts. The author also touches on the Red Hat Enterprise version of Linux throughout the text. The Linux installation section is well written with plenty of screen shots showing the various screens during installation. The other sections are also very readable. The book comes with a couple of CDs containing Fedora Core1.A reader may wish to download a more recent version (Fedora 4 is available at the time this review was written). This book is a good springboard in getting into the Linux world with Fedora; however I think that a person will want to supplement this book with a reference on Linux (such as Linux in a Nutshell) in order to get a more detailed coverage on topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for what I was looking for...
In my quest to learn Linux, I've been working through the book Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora by Bill McCarty (O'Reilly). This is exactly what I was looking for in a learning guide.
3-0 out of 5 stars Can't rate because it did not meet my needs
I wanted a book that could help me with fedora in TEXT MODE. This book looked great and obviously, books from Oreilly are always good so I bought it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for working VC++ programmers
I make a living writing C++ code.Like many other MFC developers, I have been reluctant to move into the .NET world. This book is the bridge I needed to make the change.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant stuff!!
When I read the various quotes from this book I was a bit skeptical - especially the quotes from the program manager of Visual C++. I'm not saying I didn't believe the quotes, but I figured that lots of these guys know each other and help each other out with quotes. However, I did buy the book and am definitely happy with it! Here are my specific Pros and Cons:4-0 out of 5 stars Use XML and cryptography under .NET
There is a vast group of Visual C++ coders out there, you perhaps amongst them. Successfully writing and maintaining what is perhaps now large source code bodies. In doing so, you've become quite experienced and you know the ins and outs of Visual C++. But about 2 years ago, Microsoft starting pushing a wonderful new .NET platform. Impressive claims about how one could develop code in several languages sitting atop this. Technically nice. But for you, much of this was moot. You and others in your group have no inclination to start coding in Pascal, anyway. You cannot abandon Visual C++.
