5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, great resource guide for SSH
I found this book very informative, even for those who have a great understanding of SSH.Author has excellent approach to presenting the subject at hand.
3-0 out of 5 stars Probably Not Everything You Need
If you are looking to implement SSH without previous experience with it, this book is not going to get it done for you.If you are looking for a book that describes the differences between differnt implementations of SSH and a some nifty management and deployment options then this may be for you.You might condsider this book if you were deciding how to best deploy an SSH product in a large organization.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth getting!
Finally, a book that actually tells me how to deploy SSH. I read the ORA book about SSH, but I'm ready to present the "how" to my manager and I needed a book. This is the one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My first openGL book
This was the first book I purchased on openGL. This book is a very good introduction to openGL.If I might add one peice of advice to the up and coming linux Graphics programmers.DO NOT shy away from windows openGL programming books.Once you understand the concepts you will easily apply them to your linux or unix work.I think that every unix/linux openGL programmer should have this book, as well as the RED and BLUE openGL programming guide books on their book shelf. One last word. All of these books will primarily focus on understanding the concepts and to do this they spend alot of time working with the GLUT libraries. It will be up to you to figure out how to integrate this with QT or Motif.However....this book does have a section on openGL programming with Motif....if you use QT however you will be learning on your own.It isn't impossible or even that hard.It does however require a good hacker like approach. One last word while on the subject. You might also want to purchase a good book on linear algebra or mathematics for computer graphics if you plan on rendering more than a few simple programs.4-0 out of 5 stars Definitive for 1996
Back when I was learning GL, this book was the best.It covered the basics at a good level of detail.Almost as if Mark could read our product requirements, it also has appendecies on off-topic-to-GL-but-not-to-ustopics, such as the X input extension and graphics overlays.4-0 out of 5 stars Overall a very good supplement to the Red Book
Mark has a very good way of describing how things work. I have been using OpenGL for while but not using XWindows extensions that much. This book helped a lot and I used it to make sense of some the convoluted text inother books for the wgl functions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pick resource for Novice and Experienced Users
Advanced Pick : Open Database and Operating System by Roger J. Bourdon is an excellent resource for Pick programmers of all experience levels.Rather than being a command reference, it is a learning tool.Speaking in plain language, Mr. Bourden explains some of the more difficult commands of Pick in a clear concise manner. Advanced Pick also contains an interesting history and background of Pick, as both operating system and programming language. There is also a brief review of System Builder applications for use with Pick. With this book not being a reference manual, it does have the shortcoming of not being able to find things quickly.Looking in the index is helpful, but it is not all inclusive and you may have to reference two or more pages before you find the right information. Although the material is explained well, some of the more difficult subjects are not fully explained for novices. Many areas are good for beginners, but to get the maximum benefit, some experience may be required. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Data off of a Web Site into Your System
Often times there's information somewhere on the web that you want to use in your own computing. Perhaps you want to look at news stories and display the headlines of what's happening today with a link to the site of the story. In the early days of the web, when you wanted to do something like that you had to do it manually or do some kind of hard coding to parse the information you wanted out of the HTML. Tedious, and if they ever change their web page you're re-doing your code.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for applying ideas and exploring possibilities...
Rather than just read RSS feeds, would you like to *do stuff* with RSS and Atom?I received a copy of a really good book that goes beyond the nuts and bolts of RSS formatting...Hacking RSS and Atom by Leslie M. Orchard.
5-0 out of 5 stars don't worry about the different versions of RSS and Atom
The book is very logically arranged into 3 parts. For using feeds, making feeds and mixing feeds. Most readers will probably deal with the first part and maybe the third part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good coverage of NIO and practical crypto
Not a fan of O'Reilly books, but this one stands out because of excellent NIO coverage and topical examples. It beats the the "Java NIO" book from O'Reilly hands down. Overall I'd say this book is geared for those who want to implement but covers enough detail that it probably even soothes the more 'academic' out there (those who talk a good show but do not build real-world software).
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for your file input/output logic...
[Review of 2nd edition]
5-0 out of 5 stars Great 2nd edition of a comprehensive book on Java I/O
The first edition of Java I/O is now seven years old, and it is definitely time for a second edition considering all that has transpired. Note that the second edition was released in May 2006, so all reviews older than that are referring to the first edition. In this second edition there are basically eight entirely new chapters added to the original seventeen. It is probably worth the price of an upgrade especially if you are interested in Java I/O as it pertains to devices. I review this second edition in the context of comparing it to the first edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy getting into Palm OS programming
I have been programming computers professionally for 20 years. Palm OS is my latest platform. So I willingly became a beginner again. My yearning was to reclaim the old dinosaur days when programming was more fun (at least to me).
4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book
It's worth the asking price.Verive presents the material in a friendly, conversational way.Almost too conversational sometimes, doubling back and changing previous statements. The code provided doesn't exactly match the disc, but you are able to get his intent easily enough.I am a rookie programmer and I ended up forking over the [money] for the full version of NSBasic due to Verive's enthusiasm towards the program.I was able to make a couple semi-complex apps within a few hours of reading the book.Within a couple days I was making some good stuff, using only this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference for the NSBasic/Palm developer
Dr. Verive's efforts in NSBasic Programming for Palm OS are well deserved of praise. The biggest challenges a technicalauthor has is finding the right audience to write to and then maintaining the interest of that audience.Dr. Verive has done probably the *most* difficult thing a technical author can do:He has written a book for *all* levels of programmer *and* has written it to keep the interest of the reader, regardless of their technical level.Read more

I've been working with Novell Netware for many years and needed something to ease me into the linux side of things. It works well by taking all the services you know and love on the NW kernel and shows you how to get the equivalents running in linux.

3-0 out of 5 stars Start somewhere else
People who write compter books often make one classic error -- in explaining a topic they refer to other commands and topics briefly, with no explanation. If you are new to the subject you are left bewildered.Ifyou have some experience you know what they are talking about.4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but a couple of typos
This is a great book. It has a couple of typos, but nothing major (although it may confuse a few novices). If you need a book that gives you all the syntax and commands for programming the korn shell then I wouldrecommend this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro book AND reference
This is the best Korn Shell book I've seen I presently have at least 5 different books on shell programming in Unix. I actually was able to read this book cover to cover AND am able to use this as a reference. TheO'Reilly Korn shell book is good BUT, you have to read TOO MUCH to findwhat you're looking for. 5-0 out of 5 stars Sun Instructor Review
Stephen Kochan has written an excellent book. This course book could be used as a nice supplement to the Shell Programming course offered by Sun. There are plenty of code examples and the book has a nice logical flow to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to learn Shell scripting
I started using Unix in 1988 and new nothing about shell scripting on Unix. I have been mostly working on PDP and VAX-VMS systems. Scripting in VMS was very mature using DCL. Anyway I had to learn scripting on Unix and bought this book in 1990. The best thing about this book is that everything is taught in small easy to follow examples. It really explains the ins and outs very well and is very suitable for self-study. I have recommended this book to quite a few people over the years and had only very positive feedback. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled learn PocketC programming
Yes, PocketC is a nice productive development environment for Palm - but it is based on a proprietary hybrid of the C language - and the whole book is centered around this specific development environment - if you think the book will cover standard c/c++ (e.g. using the gnu C++ compiler), you're in for a shock! Also, you have to BUY PocketC after 45 days, because it is shareware - the standard development environment offered by Palm (based on the Eclipse integrated environment & gnu c++) is FREE

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, with caveats
PocketC is an excellent programming platform for Palm devices. I have used it to create simple programs, and it turns out, with little more care, can be used to create professional quality programs. This book does not show you how to create professional quality programs with PocketC. However, it is a good book to start if you want to learn programming in your own time.4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Start
I liked this book because it gave me an invaluable knowledge base to start programming in for my Palm. It neatly covers most of what I need from palm programming without getting bogged down in complicated programming concepts such as object-oriented programming and interaction with the Palm OS. However, I hope Andy Harris has written books on those as well, because thanks to this one, I'm ready to go there too. I do wish the book had more information on how to represent my applications in the application window. I also would like to have the POSE software the book says is on the CD. The index and table of contents promise both, yet the book/CD combo provides neither. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Be So Lazy
What can I say?If someone would even consider returning a book (and jumping to a two-star review) because the authors didn't make the source code available and feels it a waste of time to type and debug the code then perhaps this individual should consider a different career than programming -- one that requires less typing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A second look
After reading more I decided to keep the book.I changed my rating from two to four stars.I want to be fair to the book;It is much better than initially stated. In terms of the source code... it is not too much of an issue; the code is compact and to the point (still better if they provided the code).4-0 out of 5 stars Good book

A book for the basic UNIX user.Does NOT include anything about writing scripts for this shell!Worthless!Don't waste your money.
1-0 out of 5 stars Massive omissions
What the heck ? This book omits MOST of the commands of csh/tcsh.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best book on LEARNING to USE the shell
I've seen many books on unix shells, however almost all the other books focus on shell programming instead of actually using shell to work more effectively and efficiently. This book fills the gap (hence the name "Using...". I personally recommend Zsh if you are looking for the most comprehensive shell. However zsh is too comprehensive and there is no book on it. Tcsh shell is an EXCELLENT shell to do your work (type in commands, listing files, and etc). It has all the essential goodies: command line completion, command-line editor, history, and etc. It found it more friendly than ksh and less complex than bash and/or zsh. This book teaches you step by step how to use the shell to do your every day work effectively. The author explains everything clearly which is more than what I can say about many books that just touches a little bit of using the shell as a command interpreter aspect of the shell as if everyone spend more time writing the shell scripts than using the command line. These aspect of the csh/tcsh are the basis for similar utilities in the other shells: ksh, bash, and zsh. I find that even if you use bash or zsh, you'll appreciate the information in the book. The other reason the author didn't write much on programming is because c-shell is less frequently used in shell programming because of the now famous posting of "C shell programming considered harmful", which is also on the book's homepage. If you have the patience to read through the book, you will find it an excellent investment of time. (The only other book I would say this for sure is the "Learning the vi Editor." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I used this book and Self Test software together to pass the test on Oct 22nd, just in time for the deadline. I liked this book better than his past super hero comic strip CNE guides. He covered the topics completely and provided good lab scenarios that were useful for the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it once, passed the exam
Since the purpose of this book is to teach the reader what is necessary to upgrade their Novell CNE 5 certification to a Novell CNE 6 the review is rather simple and to the point.I read through it, skimmed through it a second time, looked at the included CD and reviewed the questions at the end of each chapter, took the exam and passed it the first time. That makes it pretty clear that all the information is in here to pass the exam, all you have to do is study it.Since it made upgrading my certification a snap I would have to give it a very high recommendation to anyone seeking to do the same.

1-0 out of 5 stars Exercise caution when using this book as a reference
I've never read a technical book that would contain so many inaccuracies and even false information, not to mention numerous minor incorrect or doubtful statements. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro
I am a hardware engineer that only recently got involved in designing a hardware board for the Pci bus. All books and articles on the subject all assume some inherent knowledge on the subject. This is the only book/article that I found that introduced the subject slowly and clearly bringing me up to speed in a very enjoyable manner. Well Done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now in its second edition with new coverage of PCI-X 2.0
Now in its second edition with new coverage of PCI-X 2.0, PCI Bus Demystified is an expertly written text meant for hardware and software designers alike, explaining all aspects of the peripheral component interconnect (PCI) bus, which is the most established bus system used to connect the various elements of today's high-performance computer systems. Including PCI electric specifications, numerous design examples, and beginning and advanced topics such signal groups and types, the arbitration process, plug and play configuration, electrical and mechanical features unique to PCI-X, and much more, PCI Bus Demystified is an excellent resource, classroom text and self-teaching tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful quick reference
I found this book to be a useful quick reference book, the writing is clear and its up to date. I like having the ebook on the CD-ROM for searching different topics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For C++ developers
Very good book, explains real-worlds issues one faces when developing COM components. 5-0 out of 5 stars Real-world COM+ solutions laid bare
An excellent book. The early chapters reveal solid solutions to oft-encountered COM problems - error handling, string manipulation, smart pointers, multiple-reader single-writer locks, streaming and marshal-by-value etc. The later chapters concentrate mainly on design techniques for building scalable applications. In my (humble) opinion, chapter 13: The MTS Revolution is worth the price of the book alone. This chapter describes the evolution of technologies for building scalable systems, introduces the single-concurrent-client model and explains how to write scalable systems keeping code maintainable and in the general case, lock-free. All would-be COM+/MTS developers should read this chapter! I've read both this and Tim Ewald's Transactional COM+ - both excellent books and compliment each other very well. In my opinion, Brown's chapter 13 is far superior to Ewald's chapter 1. Both attempt to acheive the same thing, coaxing the regular developer into the COM+ mindset, but Brown's offers logical facts and reasoning as opposed to Ewald's non-real-world convoluted IPerson examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for COM+ developers
This is an excellent book; a little pricey, but worth the money if you are serious about COM+.And I mean serious! This is not a beginners book, for that I would recommend "Inside COM+ Base Services" by the same publisher. This book is a little too biased towards MS development environments. For example they compare VC++, VB, and VJ++ and casually mention there are "other capable environments".Hmm.Then again, this is a Microsoft press book, and COM+ is a Microsoft technology, so its to be expected.
