A Great Book!
This is indeed a great book for both beginning and experienced photoshop users. Although it helps to get the "Photoshop CS2 One-on-one" combined with it if you're just starting out, but the author still gives a tutorial on the basics for those of you who are still a tad green.
Great book for beginners...
I'm in the game industry, and this book is right on in its techniques, and tutorials! This guy knows what he's talking about, and his easy to follow tutorials are great. Beware, this book is more for begginers, showing you the basics. I do wish he had gotten a little more into advanced technique in photoshop.

A must have for game artists!

Go further in describing the sharpening process.

There are plenty of books by Photoshop gurus that explain the software's tone and color controls and most users can usually master these functions if they make a serious effort.But one function that always seems rather inexact is the detail function, as exemplified by the sharpening tools.This still seems to be a rather hit or miss proposition, and there has long been a need for more detailed instruction on this function.Fraser takes the function on, and even if you don't agree with all his recommendations, this book should clarify what sharpening is about.
Pretty Good
This book nicely compiles all of the information regarding multi-stage sharpening workflows Mr. Fraser has previously published in various articles over the years. If you've never read any of them, then this is a definite must buy. If you've read all of them, you won't find a lot of new information here aside from the highly welcome detailed explanation of CS2's Smart Sharpen filter. Adobe's own documentation has always been pretty ambiguous as to what all the little checkboxes and sliders do in the new dialog.

The mysteries of Photoshop unlocked
I have been struggling to make full use of Photoshop CS2's remarkable power, and it wasn't until reading and using Colin Smith's wonderful book that it all finally began to make sense.Not only is everything explained in clear language in a step-by-step way, but the companion CD allows you to go through the steps and get hands-on experience working with Photoshop so you can really understand what you're doing.

......in less time than it takes to get up, carry the trash to the bin 15yds. from where i sit,.... adobe raw's wonder, became a part of my thinking...... i am not nesessarily a teach yourself book person, but i was familiar with colin' work, and commend the way he " shares " information, so i opted to purchase this gem of a manual. suffice to say, i've not been bored yet. In less than 10 minuets, raw became a whole new dimension, and figuring out the bridge ( somewhat ! ), was not far behind.

Great tricks
This book has some great tricks, mostly for me it was more the steps to do the tricks which can be used in other designs. Its a good book to learn about different ways of doing things in photoshop.

PhotoshopCS Down & Dirty Tricks
Although this was written for CS and I've since upgraded to CS2 I still find the book extremely useful for those quick tips that can make a big difference to your image. Additionally "Down & Dirty" speeds up your production of projects as you get to learn about the new features that make Photoshop the number one product in its class.
THE TRUTHfrom someone who knows what they're talking about
Here are some noteworthy tutorials perhaps you may find a use for, even though I did not: DVD mockup, Book mockup, Grudge Effect, Making a Photo Look Old. The best tutorials are by Felix Nelson, because they are original and unique. Scott Kelby's stuff is kitsch. He copykats what graphic designer's are doing today and recreates a cheap knock-off tutorial for this book. Best Buy, American Pie's Logo, etc. Why the hell would I want to make a logo that looks just like American Pie's logo? Or a logo that looks just like EA Sport's logo? How trite. But if that's your thing to steal, mimic, and make crappy versions of the original then go ahead. I used to respect Kelby, mmm not so much anymore. Anything for a buck and reproduce filler garbage for the masses. I pity anybody who uses this for commercial purposes or for anything that the public will see. ... Read more

An excellent book if you already know the basics
If you are a new InDesign user and/or do not understand concepts like bleed & slug/kerning & leading, then read Lynda.com's Hands On Training (HOT) first.Otherwise, you may want to consider Adobe's Classroom in a Book.HOT does a better job of covering the basics and the included videos are superb. But Classroom in a Book is also excellent and carries you a bit further than does HOT, particularly if you are producing a book with chapters.
Offers a great general overview
This book is great to get you started on the basic operations of Adobe Indesign. However, there are more than a few typos that make it challenging to get the exact end result that is described in the book. But with enough persistance you'll figure it out and coast through the other lessons. :)

Adobe Indesign CS Classroom in a Book is Terrific
This book is very comprehensive and well thought out. It is an indispensible tool for someone learning Adobe Indesign. This book, along with the included CD with exercise files helped me pass and assesment test for a job interview with flying colors!

A Must Have Addition for your Photoshop Library
Squeezed between the covers of this book is an enormous amount of essential information about how to do just about everything with Photoshop with a little bit of Illustrator thrown in for good measure. The author starts the book off with one of the best visual demonstrations of how to use Photoshop to make selections, replace colors, and many more. Using commercial illustrations he has created for national magazines and newspapers he shows how he achieved the effects with just enough information to allow you to be able to create a similar photo treatment without making it so complicated that it puts you into a comma reading it. While the latest edition doesn't cover all of the new CS2 tools, it covers the ones necessary for those that do photo clean-ups or manipulation. He even explains how the 3D model feature in Photoshop works - a topic most authors neatly avoid.

This book has many informative tutorials and is very good for anyone, from intermediate to advanced users.Worth the price!

Greatest Book Ever Written
Some people prefer War and Peace, but that doesn't come with a CD, isn't in English and doesn't do a thing for the reader's Photoshop skills. And where are the pictures?

Best beginners supplement to product manual
Although I had a lot of experience with CAD programs, I struggled with Illustrator 8. I finally upgraded to v. 10 and bought Classroom In a Book for that version. You CAN teach yourself Illustrator with the manual and this book in a few weeks. ICIAB is a good supplement to the manual, which for reasons that always baffled me, has too few illustrations for information aimed at visually oriented people. After first determining why I needed Illustrator when I already had Photoshop, I picked up this book because of my positive experience with another book from this Classroom in a Book series (Photoshop 7.0). This is a fabulous book!
I bought this book several months ago, but only recently found the time to spend a little time with it.This is a fabulous book!It is impeccibly well-organized and presents in a crystal-clear manner the topics that are the most important.Each major section of each chapter includes an exercise for which all of the necessary files are readily available on the included CD.Each exercise is explained (in the usual crystal-clear fashion) in the book, and by going through the steps that it involves yourself, using the supplied images, you quickly develop a solid understanding of all of the essential ideas that are covered in the corresponding section of the book.

Great PhotoShop book!
Photoshop CS2 is the pretty much standard in web graphic design and digital photograph editing now and is a great tool to know.The author assumes no prior knowledge on knowing Photoshop or any other graphic editing tool.So if you're a novice (like me) or have used other graphic editing tools in the past, this is a great book for you.The other thing that is great about this book is that each chapter includes video tutorials from [...] as well as exercises to work on that review each topic covered. Throughout each chapter there beautiful, color screenshots of what is covered as well.
Excellent resource
I had to purchase this book for a class I'm taking and the book is incredibly helpful. It has easy demonstrations to follow--which really help if you're a "hands on" learner, as I am. The book comes with a CD-ROM that has files you can use for the demonstrations as well as demo movies that you can watch. I also had no previous Photoshop experience and still had no problem. Some irritating flaws in the lessons
I bought this book with high hopes and was happy with the exercises until I ran into Lesson 5.Lesson 5 covers creating "cut-only video".This is a MAJOR part of video editing and, unfortunately, this lesson had major errors in it (more than one). The "in" and "out" points were completely messed up and it was impossible to do the edits as instructed. Very frustrating!I ended up having to completely skip this important lesson.

Great Way to Learn The New Version of Premiere Pro

Excellent book
I have several Visio books - most are useless for developers who write VBA/VB/VC++ code for Visio automation. For those who develop for Visio, this is a must-have book.It's simply the Visio developer's bible compared to the rest.It includes sample code, appendices of events, properties and more.I wish I had known about this book before I began visio programming because it's easy to read from beginning to end and progress your skills incrementally - now I use it as a reference.

Mastering Photoshop Basics
My husband and I are taking a beginning Photoshop class at the local adult school. Instead of a more extensive and difficult text we chose to supplement the class with Photoshop Elements 4 For Dummies. It moves inmore logical sequence than the class and enabled us to begin editing our photos immediately. It also allowed us to focus onclass instruction without taking notes.

Software that's getting ever more powerful
Thee seems to be a trend in software that they have to keep comming up with new releases to get people to send in more money. But after version three or four, it seems that the new features that they are adding aren't really features that you'd use. Look at Microsoft Word, which of the new features do you really use? But also look at WordPad. It's grown until it's about the equivalent of Word 3.0 or something like that. It's faster, smaller, easier to use and pretty much does what you want, in some cases even better than Word itself.

Sadly, a Disappointment
If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)

This book is what used to be called a "manual" that came "free" after you spent a few hundred dollars on software.If you are looking for a manual, this is a good choice, but if you want to learn how to use the program with this, please don't.The examples it showed were not consistent within the chapter, so you could not follow along by trying to try out the concepts after reading easily.Read more

Wow, Version II
This updated edition has been revamped with new tips for the latest version of Photoshop.It has Davis' usual mix of practical techniques with impressive illustrations that show the kind of results you can expect.A DVD set is also available if you want to watch the lessons on your computer.All in all a good entry in the Wow series.

Buy and be Wowed
I had the pleasure of sitting through Jack's class while on a Geek Cruise called "Macmania" and he refered to his book. I bought it wondering just how good the book would be relative to Jack in the flesh and I have to say that the book presents very well indeed. This is not always true for some teachers but Jack has the gift to be able to clearly and effectively communicate the needed information to make Photoshop sing for non-professional (and even them at times!) users. The title of "how to wow" really does say it all. The book is full of easy to use techniques that will really punch up an average picture to near-fine art quality, assuming it's a good picture to start. And even then, it can really help salvage a picture that might be so-so to a very acceptable picture. Many of the techniques are very easy to use and make alot of sense once you try it once. In my own case, I used his tips on distortionfilters to straighten out a picture of a building in just seconds. No bellows needed or fancy 3rd party filters needed. He shows how to selectively adjust contrast, color, brightness, color correction and alot more without the typical photoshop overhead of a dozen layers and such. He does push the use of raw files and after watching what can be done with raw files, I can see why. But, he does not leave those who can only shoot JPEGs behind, many of tips and tricks work just as well with JPEGs and he demos them that way.

I am so happy to have found this book and DVD lesson
I have needed InDesign Training for a very long time.It is the only program the agency I work for is allowed to use, but I live in the middle of nowhere and have been unable to attend classes.This book and 2 hour DVD lesson totally has gotten me up to speed on making page layouts.I only wish I had bought it from Amazon instead of Barnes and Noble, I would have saved $15.At any rate, get this book.The best thing about it is that the author uses PRACTICAL examples for doing things.Most computer books expect you to know things already.Well, I didn't know squat.Now I do.The author runs you through simple examples, getting more and more complex with functions, until you have it down.I love that!I loved this book so much I ordered his Photoshop book too since I need to learn that program.So, if you bought InDesign CS2 and need help from the get go, GET THIS BOOK FIRST!

If it wasn't for Deke....
I would never have tackled InDesign CS2 without this book. Deke lays it out, so to speak, in every way. Do-along lessons, The DVD and the large pictures showing you what it should look like create a visual safety net. You almost can't go wrong. The book lessons are so clear and Deke takes you through every way to do a thing in each lesson. If you're a keyboard freak there are keyboard shortcuts galore, include Deke Keys which you can install with the lessons. I am more of a mouse person and Deke makes sure to outline all the ways you can use the mouse to access pallets and work with graphics and text. Deke is enthusiastic about the software but brutally honest about it's few shortcomings. Best of all, he takes you through the trickiest parts of the learning process and manages to be funny all the while. I always love Deke's lesson plans. Instead of using a stuffy business format for the sample documents he presents you with projects like Little Pupper Friend's Cookie Recipe or Professor Shembops 1970's pop music quiz. It all feels less intimidating. Another good thing is the way Deke explains things for those of us who have been using PageMaker or QuarkXPress. Adobe InDesign CS2 One on One is a wonderful way to learn. The book is great for design people who are not particularly "techie". Still, InDesign CS2 is not for sissies.I know this sounds nutty, but I feel like Deke is right here with me every step of the way.

Enough with the shortcuts already
I bought this book because of the extensive amount of instructional video that accompanies the written text. It was something I was looking for in an instructional book - and I didn't find another book with 2+ hours of video. However, after only completing four of the chapters I cannot help but be bothered by the fact that the author has an awful habit of telling you ever possible shortcut configuration for every function. He spends an inordinate amount of time explaining all the shortcut possibilities which is very distracting when you are trying to follow along with an exercise. It's great to know all these handy shortcuts, but if you are just starting to learn InDesign (and I'm guessing here) you initially just want the basics. This approach really slows down the process. Unfortunately, these "shortcut digressions" seem to continue throughout the book. The video content (and the book content) probably could have been reduced by about 30-40% if he didn't labor about every possible shortcut every other sentence. In all fairness the book does contain a lot of content, but I am kinda disappointed by the video. They could have made this potentially excellent book truly excellent if they made an appendix of all these shortcuts rather than cram every option into every exercise. Very distracting. ... Speed Clinic Delivers!
Since I was new to PhotoShop CS2, upgrading from years with PS Elements, I started with basic, highly recommended massive tutorial type PS CS2 books first. I had a "second tier" list of PhotoShop books for purchase consideration after I became at least semi-literate in PS CS2. This was near the top of my "second tier" book list - it should have been one of the FIRST PhotoShop books I bought!
