2-0 out of 5 stars Typical Kelby
This is yet another book from the man who is trying to take over Photoshop with his "Photoshop Professionals" organization.
3-0 out of 5 stars Many Unanswered Questions
I read the book cover to cover while using it as a companion tutor to an on line dslr course. I found many of the steps not complete. I had basic questions on basic elements of PSE 3.0 and didn't find any mention of them in the book or index. I was left "wanting" for my answers on the basic of uses in Organizer and Editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Photoshop Elements 3 Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book on how to use a powerful tool
I work as a copy editor at a newspaper, so I needed a book which would help me get started real quick!I played around a bit with Quark years ago, but I really needed it fleshed out for my understanding. This book explains all the basic tools in Quark, and gives some good technical tips.I just wished it could have also given some advice on decent layout design.I keep this one at my desk! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wowzer, wowzer!
What a great book! What separates this book from all the others is the downloaded pictures that you work with as you make your way through the book.I kept the pictures in their chapter folders and put them in a folder called Elements 3: 50 Cool Ways. Then after practicing with them, when Adobe asked me if I wanted to save changes, I said no - so I could practice again and again.I must be slow because I have needed to practice them again. Thanks Dave, for a wonderful book. Will you be doing the same for Elements 4?

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
This is the most user friendly book that I have ever held in my hands. The great thing about this book is that Dave works with you one on one by having you download the pictures that are the examples in the book! This way you work on the same picture step by step and you can see what your picture should look like through the edit process. This book is very FUN and INFORMATIONAL! Buy it you won't be sorry!!! And you will do things with this program that you didn't know you personally could do!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Light hearted, useful, and informative
This book is not only a pleasure to read, it also was superbly reproduced and technically accurate (not all books are!). Dave Huss goes the extra mile to provide an excellent selection of real world (read: useful) tutorials that cover in detail how to retouch and correct common digital photography problems (color cast, wrinkle removal, panorama assembly, red eye, perspective correction). It also covers common challenges associated with managing digital photo libraries (album assembly, photo cataloging, image management). The photo projects are perfect for newcomers to digital photography (like me) and expose many of the features of Photoshop Elements I needed to get up to speed on fast. Well worth the investment. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Book is more for Beginners
This book was somewhat of a let down for me since I thought it would focus more on intermediate/advanced digital character design techniques using Photoshop CS. Most of the book is aimed for the beginner (or pre-beginner). However there are a few usefully chapters near the end for more advance graphic professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for digital painting
Ive done just about everything else with photoshop and wanted a good book on digital painting so I could use my traditional art skills in that way.Its a good amount of content for the price and it has some really nice tips on creating your own brushes. The tutorials are pretty much step by step, although a little more info would have been nice.A lot of the process depends on your own ability and experience with the pen and tablet. So, overall I'd say its a good resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a Class in Digital Character Painting and Design
This is one of the best books on digital painting and character design that I have found. Most computer painting books deal with digital filters and special effects but this book is truly like taking a class in digital character painting with Adobe Photoshop CS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now i want all my books to be like this
One of the best books on software that i ever bought. I've been working with GoLive for quite a while now and just can't believe how many useful things i didn't know about it yet. So many shortcuts that enhance productivity, so many features that i paid too little attention to.
4-0 out of 5 stars good companion to a standard GoLive text
Adobe offers GoLive as a powerful tool to build pages in a website. It is complicated enough that the authors of this book present 200 tips, to perform common and useful tasks.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All GoLive Users
I have been using GoLive since the Cyberstudio days, and this book STILL florred me on how much useful information it contained. Everything from the "Well duh! I can't believe I didn't know that" to the "WOW" tips are in here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself Illustrator
If you don't have the time or the money to take a lengthy class on Adobe Illustrator, just buy this book. There are a lot of instructional books out there for Illustrator and other Adobe programs, but this is by far the best and most concise. It includes a CD with lessons and images, and if you start at the beginning and plow through it, you'll learn Illustrator competently enough to get you up and running with the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrator CS training guide
This workbook is incredibly useful for gaining a thorough understanding of Adobe Illustrator.Shortcuts are introduced throughout the lessons and extra information is included in grey text boxes in the book along the way.Lessons are outlined well in the table of contents for quick reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tips to increase your Photoshop productivity
This book is really different from any other Photoshop book I've come across. Many Photoshop books seem bent on illustrating every feature the software provides. This can be a bit intimidating for beginning Photoshop enthusiasts, who still have trouble navigating the software. This book simply aims to help the reader organize the Photoshop environment in a way that makes it easy to perform the work of digital enhancement.

Editorial Review

Some might think of a Wow! book as only showing how to create neon lettering or chrome highlights. But Sharon Steuer has given us a book that will have readers saying, "Wow! I can't believe how much better I am at Illustrator." The special techniques famous to the Wow! series are still represented here: pen and ink wash, scratchboard, warps, scribbles, and 3D effects, among many others. But what makes this book the one you'll keep by your computer is the incredibly clear writing, examples that cover all the fundamentals, and a clean layout.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent tutorial for intermediate Illustrator users
I had some Illustrator experience before picking up this book, which is important: this gives you the basics and tells you what to do when you're beyond the basic level. The author doesn't just tell you what to do, but WHY to do it. The book is full of lesson plans covering a broad scope of Illustrator functionality, for example how to use the "divide" command to create nice abstract graphics effects. Similarly, I never really had a good grasp of the usefulness of blends and gradient meshes before completing the lessons. I also got a taste of functions that I don't often use, such as custom brushes and 3D effects. I might not use them more often in the future, but if I ever need them, it's nice to know they exist.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY NEW to Illustrator .......but not anymore!
I LOVE this book. I got this one as a gift in pdf format & ended up buying CS2 hardcopy one.
4-0 out of 5 stars Illustrator is NOT Photoshop...
This book (and it's many previous editions... which are less expensive, and nearly identical, except for adding "CS" to the title)... are a good way to learn some fundamental AI techniques. Don't let the negative rant by the Photoshop enthusiast (preceeding this post) totally turn you off to the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies
Like everyone else who rated this book, I would've given it five stars for all the stated reasons if I had been using Photoshop for a year or so.
5-0 out of 5 stars I am having fun with this book
There are hundreds of third party books for Photoshop, but this is one of the most gorgeous looking I have seen. It is in full color and the Photoshop artwork is inspiring. There are 61 step-by-step projects designed to teach you how to achieve interesting effects from photos. Flipping through the pages makes you just want to start right in and try some.
5-0 out of 5 stars Haven't put it down since I got it...
This is a fantastic book if you like to take a more painterly approach with your photos. The watercolor recipe is worth the price of the book alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book for learning PSP X
This book is great for the digital photographer (and who isn't these days?), who may or may not be new to Paint Shop Pro. It teaches all the great techniques for not only improving pictures, but also has many suggestions for using them in fun and interesting ways.
1-0 out of 5 stars Badly Organized and Incomplete
This book is terrible. It does not cover many of the tools. For instance, at the beginning of the book it mentions that a new tool is "Object Remover", supposedly to remove objects you dont want in a picture. That is the last you hear of it, it's never mentioned again, and no hint as to how to use it.The major tools are covered (sometimes in several sections), but many other tools are listed at the beginning of the chapter, then never mentioned.I'm sorry I bought it and will try another book (Perhaps Paint Shop Pro X Digital darkroom by Clark).

4-0 out of 5 stars Salvation from Damnation
Paint Shop Pro X, as released by Corel after buying the software from JASC, was supposedly a revision of the program in a new user friendly, learning friendly direction.Unfortunately, the program's on screen help is horrible, and the official manual is nearly worthless.PSP 9 had a much better manual, and if you upgraded from PSP 9 and already understood the program then you may not need this book. But if you're new to PSP, you desperately need some kind of substitute manual, and this book is the best I've seen.

3-0 out of 5 stars A whole lot of content... not sure how much of it is good though
This book teaches you how to do "FUN AND ZANY WACKY PHOTOSHOP TRICKS." There's a couple good ones. But anyone who is paying 800 dollars for a piece of software isn't going to buy a book to learn how to make cool watery text. Well, maybe they are.
2-0 out of 5 stars my review
I bought this book a year ago.I did manage to successfully complete certain tasks but in my opinion, he uses too many shortcuts.Obviously this book wouldn't be for a beginner. His sense of humor is dry and wasn't needed. This book would have been slightly better if a CD were included as well as a place to download the images he used so that we may practice on them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn a ton in a short time
Photoshop has a very steep learning curve. The depth of the program is daunting. While I'm no guru on this program - yet - I've found that just diving right in and doing some of the more involved applications of the program exposes you to the maximum amount of features and you learn much more in much less time. With this book, you can do some very simple things, or jump into some of the more complex, such as creating "from scratch" illustrations.Everything is presented with beautiful, full color illustrations of every step, including menu examples and keyboard shortcuts. This book is very good for the beginner, but can also be a valuable resource for the more experienced user, and can help you to become your own in-house Photoshop innovator. ... As an IT techie, I found this book really amazing for people who aren't professional in this field. As a matter of fact it lists everything you want to know, step by step in order to get to the result you want. 4-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop CS2 RAW
I must admit, I took a long time switching to digital for photo work, and then I thought I was set. It appears that not only do a I have to master the camera for settings, but in those instances where the money talks, I have to learn about RAW format rather than the high res JPG format I thought was dealing me a good deal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Too much graphic art - too little substance
In the field of digital photography, capturing and developing "RAW" files is a hot topic, largely because this is usually the route to the highest image quality attainable. The subject can be a bit opaque because each manufacturer mechanizes in-camera RAW files differently. Also, there are many different RAW converters (software packages for developing the RAW files into optimized images) from both the camera manufacturers and third parties. One of the most popular RAW converters is Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), originally released by Adobe as a plug-in for Photoshop 7 and Photoshop Elements, and now integrated into both products.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to RAW
I bought this book after reading the other 5-star reviews, so I thought Wow! This must be it! Well, it's almost 'it'. The book gives a well-written and useful explanation of what RAW is all about, and also shows some good examples of what you can do with RAW. It also helps you to decide when to shoot in RAW or when you'd better just switch to JPG.

This book is terrible. Badly written from a grammer standpoint.
1-0 out of 5 stars Title- misleading
For people venturing into architectural visualization, this book is not for you. Not enough content for 3d modelling(building) and other architecture related stuff. I quite agree with the other guy that the title should be changed to 'Basic 3ds Max'. However, even this title is not appropriate since the author had not covered many important features of 3ds max. The exercises are so simple and won't help you very much in building up your confidence on 3ds max even after you finished reading this book. The book is expensive and lacks quality. I won't buy a book from 'friends of ed' publications anymore.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a comprehensive guide for architectural visualization
The author lacks creativity in presenting effective tutorials for the reader. A simple house and a bunch of exercises on teapots, spheres and other built-in 3ds max objects. While I understand that the aim of these simple exercises is to showcase 3ds max features, he should have at least provided more challenging exercises (geared towards the architectural visualization industry) either at the end of each chapter or at the appendix section of the book. There were no tutorials on how to render an building structure using night-time settings, interior structure using both daytime and night-time settings, somehow the reader would have to figure-out the settings for himself/herself. There were no guidelines on a lot of topics that would be very helpful for people working in the architecture industry for instance there were no examples on how to superimpose a 3ds max building into a photograph (an important feature to showcase the proportion of a proposed building to adjacent existing structures) no examples on how to create lights using manufaturer's specs. and no examples on how to use third party plug-ins such as RPC from archvision to provide vegetation, trees, people, cars in your 3d building model. -Again these topics, you have to learn it on your own. The author has also a habit of applauding a particular 3ds max feature in architectural visualization but fails to provide exercises/tutorials on the other hand (eg. panorama exporter, hair & fur effect for 3d grass). If your local bookstore carries this product, find time browsing it before buying this book. Bottomline, this book is not a good reference for the architectural visualization industry and for people planning to study 3ds max 8. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Meh... Next.
Nobody can deny that Mr. Rodney knows how color management works in Photoshop better than most people, but unfortunately, knowledge of a subject doesn't make you a good writer. I find the bulk of Mr. Rodney's ramblings (both those published on his website-that-time-forgot and posted to various discussion groups and mailing lists) to teeter on the verge of complete unreadability most of the time, and while my hopes were high that a good editor might tame his curious linguistic proclivities here, they were quickly dashed upon skimming through the text. What's worse, the illustrations and photos in every single copy of this book I've ever seen have suffered from severe magenta color casts, leading one to wonder why the author and his publishing company failed to practice what they preached in bringing this title to the public. If you didn't know who Andrew Rodney was to begin with, you'd likely think him full of beans based on the appearance of the plates in this volume. After all, why should readers believe consistent, predictable color in print to be a realistically attainable goal when even the guy who wrote the book on the subject can't seem to achieve it?
5-0 out of 5 stars The best tutorial introduction to CMS.
Get Andrew Rodney's book, and a copy of Real World Color Management, and you'll have the best existing CMS tutorial and thethe best reference text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real world techniques to tackle color management
Thanks Andrew Rodney, I just received your new book and I just couldn't wait to thank you for having made all this knowledge available to us.This book will be a milestone on the subject of color management as it dares to go into the nitty-gritty details of "how to make it work in real life".

Well structure for the professional or novice. You'll find yourself looking trough it every chance you get.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love his human side of technology
I must say, as much as this book takes VERY LONG to get through, because I have to stop, try the stuff out myself and really try to understand it, I find myself motivated by Deke's humor. As much as he contradicts himself after saying that he'll be concise in the beginning but half the time he's talking nonsense (funny nonsense that is), you can't blame him. That's his style after all! I have found myself loving the book because I'm always curios to see what silly thing he's going to say next? I love it how he knows when to be serious about the tools and when to make a good joke about it. My favorite has to be the one about using the healing and cloning tools with a picture of a baby's bottom that heals the dents on his forehead.
5-0 out of 5 stars Use this as a reference book once you already know PS
This book describes the fine intricacies of all the tools, the filters and the features of Photoshop. Where other books lead you through lessons and tell you to set X tool preference to Y, and you may happily use the Y preference for years without even knowing there is also a Z preference, this book explains all the preferences for all the tools and gives illustrated examples of what the various settings produce.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3DS MAX: Character Modeling is awesome!
I am extremely impressed! This is my very first experience with any 3D modeling and software. The program is easy to follow and the instructor is very down to earth. The program explains the modeling process in laymans terms and when 3D terminology is used it is followed by an explanation.I could watch another 50 CD's like this by the same artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy!
All in all from start to finish this dvd will bring you along every step of the way in your goal to model the human figure. It is detailing at its best, from the tear ducts in the eyes to the toe nails, this book does not miss a thing. The first time you scim through the various movies in this dvd it can seem quite over whelming, quite slow and monotinous at times. But stick with it, you'll become faster as you take in this brilliant wealth of knowledge from the professionals. It is worth the slog because polygonal sub-divisional modelling has since become industry standered..a must buy if you want to chase a career in this field.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Guess I should have paid attention to the title
This video is EXCELLENT if you want to know how to model a character.Heck, I even learned things about Paintshop Pro (they use photoshop, but PSP has a lot of the same features) that I never knew existed. The only reason they didn't get a 5 is that I was hoping that they would cover Rigging, Skinning and Animation.Since the title is Modeling, I guess that's all it is.Don't get me wrong, if you want to create a character model, there's no better resource-- the videos are thorough and complete, but Rigging and (especially) skinning a high-polygon model are pretty tough undertakings and it would be nice to have a video course on that.I checked out the home page of the folks who did this disk and they didn't have anything on Rigging and Skinning (sigh).Great disk, though. ...
