Wandering in the fog
I agree with the complaint about lack of index.Combined with the vague chapter headings, the reader really needs lots of telepathy or maybe just pre-existing knowledge to use this book as a resource.For every 10 times that I had difficulty in administering or using Project Server as a super user and I looked at this book, 9 times I walked away with no solution.I accomplished more by just trying things on my own, and Googling for hints.

Power packed...loaded with useful items.
My only regret is that I didn't get the book sooner.This is a must for any serious Excel user who needs to hone their general skills and improve their efficiency.Efficiency is the name of the game for Excel, because if you're not making use of it's more advanced tools and utlilities, then you are not making the most of the program.
Informative and to the point
I bought the book and also the media ugrade, so I could read it right away online. It's filled with very helpful tips and tricks that most typical users overlook. I definitely recommend it to any Excel user.

Great Text Book
This was the assigned text for a class I took. It was an excellent text book: clearly written, well organized, and easy to study. The key points jump off the page and are repeated for emphasis. What's more, this text is so valid that I have already begun to use it at work, and expect it will remain in my reference library for a long time. It is a rare textbook that is worth it's price.

Use this book and forgetthe F1
I believe that the help included with Excel, is only good for very simple stuff, as soon as you want to get into more involved subjects the Excel help is plain not useful. That's when you would need books like this. This book covers what the title says it does. for other topics (pivot tables etc...)other books are needed. That's a lot of money? for something you didn't even know you need. I agree! But you been here before! That's the only way! So don't get overwhelmed by your 'green pee' colleagues who really had time to master Excel(mainly because they had nothing better do) Buy this book and go dwarf them as you should ;-). This book shows you that it all would have been very simple if Excel help was written by someone who really cared.

Really Helps at Work
I have to create a lot of Excel spreadsheets at work, and was always sort of intimidated by the functions in Excel.Instead of using functions, I spent a lot of time entering numbers and then finding the answer by hand, and just typing the answer in an empty cell.If any of the data changed, I would have to do all of the calculations over again, and hope that I didn't make any mistakes. This book explains each of the Excel functions in a really clear and easy to understand way, and walks you through how to use them step by step.I'm using more and more functions in my spreadsheets now.I don't have as many mistakes as before, because the functions do the calculations automatically, even when you change some of the data.I keep this book in my desk and look at it all the time.The people I work for have noticed the difference in the quality of my spreadsheets, and I'm getting a lot of complements.They're even coming to me to ask for advice!I definitely recommend this book if you use Excel at work.

A Really Helpful Book
I always found it hard to understand how functions work. It's one thing to use the autosum button to add some numbers together. It's another thing to use functions and know which one to use. Pretty Good!!
The idea of what the book is supposed to accomplish is great. I'm currently using the text in a class. It's not necessarily reader friendly and the instructor's resources are seriously lacking (errors in test bank - many, in textbook, no copies of textbook examples beyond image files - for instance, if the book shows a spreadsheet, the author doesn't provide you with the spreadsheet file, but an image of the spreadsheet - no kidding,). It could grow into my favorite series, if they tweak it and fix the errors, but it's so problematic at the moment, I might have to "can" it before next year. Haven't come across anything this can't answer for me...
It's about time MS put out a reference set that covers the most important topics, not abstract one's. I like this reference set alot so far because of it's thurough coverage of the Document Object Models (DOM) for Access, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc. I haven't gone through the whole thing yetbut the only left for me to find is where they talk more about automation,something pretty much left out of the Office 97 reference set. Overallthough, this is a great set of books to have at your disposal. It hasalready helped me come up with solutions for the custom-businessapplications and macros I create. There is also alot of material thatwasn't in the last series. A great asset to any company with VB or VBAprogrammers.

Word 2003; A Great User's Manual for a so-so product
I have to admit my bias up front; Wiley Publishing produces quality books, and I always give them the benefit of any doubt.Likewise, their "Bible" books on Microsoft software are as good as one can find anywhere, and I would include Brent Heslop's, David Angell's, and Peter Kent's effort on MS Word as being as close to the definitive standard as one can hope for.Unfortunately, MS Word has more glitches than authors have time to write about, so troubleshooting Word takes much longer than a quick reference to this book might seemingly require.In fact I bought the book with the idea of establishing a dialogue with the authors about Word's disfunctionalities that they do not address, and perhaps may be unaware of.On the other hand, reading the book and practicing what it teaches is the best way to become proficient, and to be able to converse intelligently with others about the nagging, intractable issues that prompted some of us to buy the book in the first place. At something over 900 pages, users should expect to spend a great deal of time absorbing the knowledge that the authors impart. Even though I have been a Word user for more than ten years, I'm confident that this book will be a constant reference on my desk, either until I retire, or, more likely, a new version of Word comes out, and, Sisyphus-like, then we start all over again.

The real world isn't free of errors, either
This is an excellent book for anyone with a basic understanding of simple math and simple excel operations who wants to take their skills to the next level.This will come in handy for anyone in any line of business, despite the many errors on the CD.
Worthwhile in spite of shortcomings
I readily admit that the mistakes in the CD are an impediment to learning, but I think the book still has value for users who are looking for the application to business.Many of the CD's chapters were fine and proved very useful and I don't agree with other reviewers that the CD is flawed beyond use.Users of this book can glean a great deal from the unflawed majority of the book.

Too many errors!!!
I am not an advanced Excel user, but it is easy to find out that this book has many mistakes in coordinating the problem descriptions with the solutions, as well as typos in the book, when referring to certain cells. So, I do not know which of them should be corrected, but it is hard and time consuming, at least for a novice user, to understand what is going on. The solutions to advanced problems have no explanation, which on one hand is good because it makes you try to think...on the other hand though, it is such a disappointment to find out that the solutions you try to understand are wrong!! Comprehensive, but still some holes
Previous reviewer's comments are noted well, but I was somewhat disappointed in the coverage of forms development.I really wanted to learn to move/place fields on a contact form and designate them drop-down, etc. Simple enough, I thought, for a book of this coverage.But even though the author talked about the abilitiy to do this, there were no directions, no examples, and no description of the 'Controls' options required to do it.For a book of this size and price, I had hoped for more meat.No, not to the detail of VB scripting, but certainly more detailed coverage of Outlook's powerful forms and macro abilities. To my chagrin, I'm finding my answers under theOutlook 'Help' section in the program itself!

Most comprehensive
A most comprehensive treatment of Outlook.Extremely well suited for an experienced Outlook user, with many details on the use in a server/business environment.Describes the interrelationship with Windows Outlook Express.Probably a little too comprehensive for the single system user just trying to read and write a few email messages. Subject matter is exceptionally well presented and thorough.

Dummy No More
This is an excellent book for both beginners and those more knowledgeable about the software. It is well laid out and easy to follow. It can be used as a quick reference or as a learning tool for folks newer to the programs. I have a Student/Teacher Version of the software that has only Word, Excel, Power Point and Access and have already found it quite helpful.

More for high school kids....but....
The "but" is after reading the first chapter of this book and looking through the contents there are some useful projects. I've been using Publisher since 2000 for a newsletter and brochure for a non-profit group and not much more. But now I can see several new uses for the program and I'll give them a try. Granted it's not a hard program to master the bare essentials but I think this book may open a much wider range of uses for this user. The only bad thing is the steep price for the book itself. Microsoft is great with software but not with documentation
I ordered this book as well as Special Addition Using Ms FP 2003The only FP2003 book you'll ever need.This is the book to get!!The microsoft book does not really do a good job of fully explaining the topic.To me it was very confusing.The other book I just mentioned is 3 times as thick and goes from very basic to very advanced.So as you grow the book will be there for all the information.I will be returning this book and keeping the Special Addition.

Not-so-hot
Using Microstoft Project 2003 by Tim Pyron
The only book that provides answers to tough questions
I have three other project books on my shelf but whenever I run into a tough situation, this is THE book I go to.No other books out there (not even the self proclaimed bible) explains features as in depth as this book does.I especially like the section on leveling and how it explains the 7 factors used to resolve conflicts.This is a must have for all serious users of MS Project.

More Project than I thought possible

Oriented Towards the Implementer, Not the User
This work contains over 800 pages of densly packed information.However at least 600 of those pages are directed towards system administrators who are implementing MS Project Server, not towards Project Managers who wish to use the tool.
A Brilliant Guide for the Advanced User
The Unleashed series is for Advanced users and System Administrators, so this book is a shining example of that series. Covering aspects from a real-world perspective, the authors have captured what it's like to really use Project Server and how to squeeze every last drop of productivity out of the software.
Too many propellers
I bought this book hoping to learn MS Project Server workflow from a functional utilization perspective.While the book covers the features, it fails miserably to connecting the dots in a clear manner.This has diminished this book to a reference guide.In the next edition, take note.Make the security model more clear. Make the portfolio feature more clear, etc., etc., etc.

Finally, someone puts the pieces together.
I have spent the past ten years making my living developing integrated & automated financial systems using Excel, Access, and VBA for accounting and finance departments.That said, I literally have dozens of Excel, Access, and VBA books on my bookshelf.This is the only book that I have ever seen that integrates Excel and Access.It of course uses VBA to accomplish much of this.

Microsoft Office Word 2003 Step by Step
Has help me with my certification, and showed me a couple of tricks I didn't know.

Waste of $
I had previously purchased Microsoft Office Step-By-Step and Microsoft Office Specialist Study Guide. I bought Word SBS along with Excel SBS, Access SBS, and PowerPoint SBS hoping that they would be more in depth for a novice user like myself who wants to build my skills and learn the intricacies of MS Office. Imagine my surprise, when after opening the CDs to all and loading them onto my computer, the exercises are the same as in the first two books I bought. They can't be sent back since the seal is broken on the disk packaging.

This book sucks
First of all, the CD did not have all of the Practice Files I need to actually USE the book. Second, the features it runs through are so basic as to be useless to anyone who has ever used Word, Excel, etc. There's nothing on how to creat mail merges in Word, for example. This was a complete waste of $20. Only buy this crummy book if you know absolutely NOTHING about Word, Excel, etc.

A Good Starting Point
Take a quick dip into Microsoft Office 2003 with the well-organized lessons in Step by Step. I specifically purchased the book to learn how to use FrontPage. Within one week, I had my web site published online. The next week, I was able to use the Access lessons to set up files for my customers and customer inquiries. Within a few more days, I was enhancing my web site with educational PowerPoint presentations.
Not a lookup book for people in a hurry
I feel I was misled when I purchased this book (or maybe I was half asleep and didn't read the book description carefully enough). "Microsoft Office 2003 Step by Step" is a tutorial. It covers all the Office programs, but it does so with the idea that you can learn the programs best by getting hands-on instructions for using them. You won't find much commentary, much advice, or many tips or tricks. You will find a CD with raw data and a number of step-by-step lessons to help you gain experience with the Office programs.
