I really enjoyed using this book. The author did a great job of explaining the topics...well wortht the time and price.

Not disappointed at all
Great book, step by step approach, but still requires basic knowledge of Excel's core functions. The CD provided is definitely a plus.

WHERE'S THE ACCOMPANYING CD????
Beware, the book may be good, I just start reading it, but I can't look at the examples from the "accompanying cd" because Amazon hasn't made it available to me. I've written them 3 times and still no answer. Buy this book from the bookstore. Also, this ebook is very restrictive. I don't know if I can view it from other computers and it only allows me to copy 10 selections in 7 days, after that no more cutting and pasting.....beware of the limitations. I give this 1 star, not for content but for delivery and restrictions. spearsjunk@hotmail.com

Very Useful
I'm an engineer who uses Project in my work and this book has been a great help. Every time I've had a problem getting the software to do what I wanted this book has provided a clear and consise explanation that helped me get through the problem. I'd recommend it to anyone who uses Project for major projects and doesn't have time to waste finding an answer on how to get the software to do what you want it to.

Excellent book to get you start with infopath!
This book guide you through infopath step by step. Very very helpful for beginers!

Wow!I am elated.This is great self help book. Mr. Barker, the author did an excellent job.His methodology is awesome. I was able to teach myself. By the Way, I had to learn this application in one week and I am happy to report I now know the basics after a few hours, I am up to chapter nine.Also, the forum is great for answers at [...].

Outstanding
This book has been tremendously helpful to me.If you ever have reason to pull data from a SQL database into Excel, you really owe it to yourself to read this book.In addition to being packed with great information, it is a very easy read.It is one of the few books out there that has something to offer to users of all experience levels.Highly, highly recommended.

Excellent Book!!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in -- or who needs to learn about -- PivotTables, as well as Excel reporting in general. The coverage in this book is comprehensive, providing information on Excel report topics that just isn't available in most other books.

The MS Query Program is one of Microsoft's best-kept secrets.It is almost impossible to find *thorough* documentation, much less good examples of how to use it.

An excellent business guide.
Excel users may already be aware of the power of pivot tables, which allow summarization of 50,000 rows of data with one click of the mouse - but many user's guides don't begin to touch upon its powerful features. PIVOT TABLE DATA CRUNCHING provides a tutorial which promises users and prior Excel fans the ability to get up to speed quickly, using real-world examples such as how to highlight productivity channels and produce meaningful reports. An excellent business guide.

I expected more on MsQuery and how to whit large Pivot Table.
Excellent book for novices, probably not the one for experienced users.
I am familiar with pivot tables, but bought this book to enable me to hit the ground running at my new job that requires pivot table skills. The book was very easy to follow, unlike many Excel how-to books, and there are plenty of screen shots to check your progress.I would recommend this book to those in similar situations to mine, but it does not seem appropriate for those who have consirable experience with pivot tables. ... Defective Index Destroys Any Value
I use a book like this mainly for reference on specific points.The index is so defective, however,that the book is almost entirely worthless.(Try looking up "Shared Workspace task pane", for example)

where is the errata for this book?
I agree with the masses, not such a good book.Does anyone know where the errata is located at for this book?

It needs to be rewritten.
This book should not have been published as is; it needs to be re-written again. The chapters are not logically connected; even the topics in the chapters are disconnected and lack logical progression. They also need to remove the numerous tables of descriptions. Who wants to read page after page of descriptions, which are usually found on the Help menu. On the other hand, they need to add more examples in a logical sequence, and add comments to their VBA code for better understanding. In the future, I'll be suspicious of a book that is written by three or more authors.

Impressive!A wealth of key information and examples
I found this book to be one of the best references for Excel VBA development.The book is easy to understand and follow.Contains a large amount of examples that can be easily understood.Addresses many critical aspects of excel VBA development.Not too much was spent on forms/GUI development so you will have to look elsewhere if you into that.Also addresses interfacing Excel to databases using ADO as well as API programming which is critical for superusers to extend the power of excel without the limitation of data storage.Overall, the authors have a superb job and I consider this book to be an essential of my Excel VBA library!

Somewhat disjointed
The first few chapters were a reasonable introduction to VBA for Excel, but after that, the examples, while being quite relevant and useful, seemed somewhat random, and did not strike me as being well supported by the text.

Disappointing
This book was a disappointment. I had expected a reference of the caliber of David Pogue's Mac OS X Tiger manual.Among problem areas: a hard-to-navigate and incomplete index, fuzzy photo insets, and incorrect cross-references. The manual has the feel of something put together in a hurry without proper proof-reading, and borrowing heavily from canned sources. I learned some things but had to work harder to glean the information than I should have. I would not recommend this manual, unless it's the only game in town. I don't think it is.

Beware the mistakes
I am a big fan of the Missing Manual series. Previous books have given me lots of insights into my installed software and have made my computing time much more efficient. I therefore approached this book with much enthusiasm. Office is such a gargantuan program, with tons of bells and whistles, that Microsoft itself estimates that most userstake advantage of less than a third of its capabilities.
Good book crippled by inadequate index
I was impressed by the other 'Missing Manual' book which I have read, their guide to OSX, and had high hopes for this one.The book itself is quite decent, though not as well written as the OSX guide.However, it is crippled by a totally inadequate index.First, the way in which the index is organized makes little sense -- some Word topics are listed alphabetically on their own, while others are grouped together as sub-entries under 'Word', forcing you to look in several different places.Far worse, the index is simply incomplete, making it difficult if not impossible to look upthe answers to specific questions.

One of the most invaluable references I have in my library
I'll keep this brief, as my title says it all.I have been developing access applications on a professional level for many years.Have several applications that large companies use to run there business.This cookbook has helped me in more ways then I can count.I wish I could find more like it.I use it just as a cookbook.Look thru to find a similiar situation that I am trying to solve.The examples are written very well.The code is very exact and on the money.While most of the examples listed are not always exactly like what I'm trying to solve, it definitely gets the creative juices flowing on how to solve my problem.
Recipes for Access Developer Success
The Access Developer's Handbook Set (search ISBN: 0782140114) and in particular, Volume 1: Desktop Edition (search ISBN: 0782123708) is my definitive resource to approximately 4 years of Access development.I've got more stickies and highlights in this set than all other Access books combined.So when I came across the Access cookbook and realized that the same two indispensible authors (Getz & Litwin) put together a resource of Access developer solutions, I had to have it.
Access Developers.. this is a must have!
When I started my job, my first assignment was develop several Access databases. What they wanted was beyond what I knew of Access. After buying this book and Access Database Programming and Design, I was well on my way to develop a quite advanced Access database application. I would ask myself, "I wonder if I can..." After consulting this book for the anwser, BAM! I found it there. This book covers everything from simple VBA to advanced techniques such as incorporating a email system into a database, linked dropdown combo boxes using SQL, and creating VB Form control that tells you who all is currently in a database using ADO and VBA! mr. buyen Frontpage 2003 Book is a Failure
This book was a total failure and utterly devoid of structural instructions which would take an intermediate person from frontpage 2000 to 2003! It seem to be predicated with giving information in a BACKWARD fashion interwoven in such a way that left me more confused and dissatified! If I were to grade this book, I would give it a double triple FFF of the lowest order. How serious am I, well I intend to buy another frontpage book, and I am a senior citizen on SS and money is very scarce!

A lot of text that's spread out and difficult to follow.Would have been nice to see more examples.eg, constructing drop down menus section provides a lot of text but few examples to carry you through to actually creating drop down menus.More how to and less theory would be helpful.

Excellent
This book is excellent for seasoned Excel users and people who were taught (but didn't learn) statistics in your average graduate school program. I have never seen statistical concepts so briefly and at the same time well explained. Actually applying the conceptsadds another level of learning. I highly recommend this book.

More Than a Simple Spread Sheet
Excel is of course first and foremost a spreadsheet. They were designed to allow you to play what if senarios. You can change this part of the budget to see what the effect is over there.

Basic but good!
I got this book because I was taking an introductory computer class for GE credit (hooray for easy classes!).Being an advanced computer user, at first I was dubious how much I would actually learn from the class.This book pleasantly surprised me.It goes through the basics of Windows XP Pro, MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint 2003.The book itself is well laid out, with plenty of screenshots to supplement text instructions.It also gives plenty of projects at the end of each chapter to test out your new skills.

Very useful book
I consult it regularly when I need to do something with Outlook VBA. Its clear, intelligently written, and comprehensive.

Not for seasoned VB coders
If you've been writing in VB and VBA for awhile then this book is a large waste of money. The first half of the book covers basic VB programming concepts like For Next, Do While, Select Case, Msg Box etc.... stuff I've been doing for years.The rest of the book has some okay examples, but it's not organized in a way that allows you to find what you are looking for easily.

Absolutlely essential tool for Outlook Programming
I am a little more than a novice with VBA, but with Sue's details and explaination of the complex syntax required by Outlook, real progress was possible.I have been able to build an Outlook form with VB Script that collects data form a large number of people within my company and store it on a public foler for futher use and reference.It only took a few weeks to do that and it would not have been possible without this book.Highly recommended. ... Disappointing
This book breezes through the basics and then isn't able to deliver on the advanced. There's very little information about the features and functions but I did find a section on how to dress!!! This is supposed to be about the program POWERPOINT, not about presentation basics.
Content without Soul
This book has so much content that if you wanted to write an exam on PowerPoint, you could just remember the sentences in this book. What the book doesn't do is tell you why you would want to do things in the way Wempen explains. In a phrase, the book has no soul. It's just a compilation of what PowerPoint's menus can do in so much detail that it hurts.

Letdown CD
The book is quite detailed but everybody can put in a few shareware programs and templates on a CD these days. This CD is a complete letdown. I wish they remove the CD and reduce the cost of this book. ... Read more

Not What I Expected
I bought this book based on the feedback on this page. And although I would not call the book unusable, it has a lot of scope for improvement. The book layout is terrible and there is almost zero cross refrencing in the book itself. Imagine the author does not ask the reader to look in another part of the book for more information. So my verdict is that although the book has good content, it's laid out in a haphazard way.

Great beginner's book
I love this book. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it hopelessly fails trying to get into PowerPoint programming territory. The author should have stayed away from this area and concentrated more on beginner issues. After all, this certainly is a beginner's book. In fact, it's as good as the missing PowerPoint manual. If you want to go beyond the manual, check out the well explained Cutting Edge PowerPoint by Geetesh Bajaj. It makes a great complement to this book. And if you want to do more programming, check out Powerful PowerPoint for Educators by David Marcovitz. And for troubleshooting PowerPoint, look at Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances by Echo Swinford.

Hardly a Guide for any Professional in Finance
Chances are that if you are even thinking about financial modeling you have at least a basic understanding of excel and accounting. If that is the case, this book will prove to be almost completely useless. The modeling examples used within the book are so simplistic that if you have had half a semester in an accounting class you will have a more indepth understanding than what the book provides. Financial valuation is almost non existant as is sensitivity analysis, with each getting a short token chapter. The use of excel is at such a beginner level that I feel as if I did more indepth work with excel attempting to figure out my student loan payments. I have read the book from front to back and feel as if it has provided me with no useful manner in which to conduct any sort of modeling other than in an imaginary world where companies only sell one product, have almost no expenses, collect all their recievables within the next pay period and other such ludicrious assumptions.In addition there are several errors in the examples provided in the book.These made me chuckle since anyone who could catch them would not need the book and anyone who actually needs the book for its rudimentary "guidance" would be left bewildered and confused as to why they got the answers wrong.

A very good book for self-learner
My boss asked me to develop a leave system. I have no experience about Access VBA before. I bought a lot of books. However most of them are too thick and theoretical. No step by step examples are provided. Fortunately after reading this one, I can finish my task now.
