I would disagree with many people on this book due to the fact that this book is very helpful on using codes and debugging tools although its a definition guide on computer programming inwindows 2000it can teach you a lot of details on programming it is more like a beginners guide using many symbols and differnt codes this book is more of a book for people wanting to learn how to write files store files also deals with rewritting web pages or possibley a guide on how to develop folders spreadsheets graphs and many othe features i would say this book is really great for anyone wanting to learn c programming in windows environment as well as in the assembly language or DOS enviroment; although this bookdoes not teach you assembly language programming it is a way to start learning assembly language programming1

Falls short in creating realistic applications
I would agree with the review that states the authors were working side-by-side with the office development team as this book was written.However, I would disagree that such close input was entirely helpful.While the information contained in this book is a nice introduction to how things are "supposed" to work, as with so much of Microsoft's software, things never quite work the way they were designed, unless of course, you're doing exactly what the folks at Microsoft assumed you would do.Not only do some examples in this book fail to work, most examples are simple and obvious, the kind of thing a person might generate from looking at Microsoft's help information.Often they illustrate how the designers assumed their software would work.They often fail to demonstrate what the software can do--or much more important--how to get around the artificial limitations set by Microsoft.Some simple examples involve such basic building blocks as dialog boxes and menus (commandbars in Micro-speak).Some built-in dialog boxes have over a dozen arguments, but try finding out what those arguments do from either this book or from Microsoft's help information.As for the commandbars, even the examples from the book fail to work. It's very hard to find a book on VBA that isn't based in one application, and doesn't begin at the 'Hello World' level. This book does neither. Instead it provides a good introduction to the object models of the Office applications, and includes well-written code examples. Among the best books on Excel VBA
"Writing Excel Macros with VBA" is an excellent book on the use of VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) for Microsoft Excel.Steven Roman provides a significant amount of information in a relatively short volume.
Good Reference
This is a very specialized book with a very specialized core audience and this text does what it says it does -- teach you how to write Excel Macros using VBA.Nothing too exciting here folks, very dry reading that is a necessary reference if you need to have more control over Excel than the everyday user does.
Mr Roman's book is very good value.
Mr Roman is an extremely competent and clear writer. This book, whilst not as big as some, doesn't waste space with any padding, and boring repititious stuff you see in some texts.

Must Have
For anyone who desires to master Microsoft Office 2003, this book should suffice. It isn't a how-to book in the traditional sense as in "how to write a document in Word", but delves deeper in the the technical aspects of the suite into the "why" aspect of it. The book discusses security which is certainly important and how Outlook is used with Exchange Server which is definately helpful. Therefore, this book would not be of any use to those seeking to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist exams. This book is for administrators and not users which the exams are for. Life changing
Amazon tells me I bought this in October 2004. Paradoxically, it doesn't seem like I've been using McGhee's system that long and at the same time it seems like I've been using it for years and years. It's very natural, simple, and easy to do. I have a windows mobile device and this system is perfect for it.
two is not a crowd
This helpful book cannot be adequately summarized except by comparison and contrast with David Allen's Getting Things Done. This is so for two reasons. First, McGhee claims in her acknowledgements to have co-developed the system that Allen has gone on to disseminate with extraordinary results. Second, the family resemblance between the two authors' work is obvious and suggests shared genetics, even down to the marginal quotations that are meant to inspire but which I found irksomely clich?.
Good framework and ideas, but felt like a sales pitch for Outlook
Similar to Getting Things Done and Seven Habits, this is a book about getting your life in order and making the best use of your time. I felt that McGhee, unlike Allen of GTD, did a great job of calling out the need to prioritize personal time and on saying "no" to tasks that don't fit into your schedule or would infringe on personal time.

Microsoft Office @2000 -ShellyCashman Series Book
The book itself is very good. I would recommend it to those who are just starting to learn and for those who need to brush up on their skills or use as a desk reference. I did not like the "ring -binder" form as it seems flimsy and already was looking used when I got it due to shipping. I would suggest the other form for future reference.

Great Book just skip the first chapters about computers!!!
The book is great but it is written for people who never had experience with computers.So I would advise anyone to skip those intial chapters. I highly recommend getting the spiral bound edition because the book is about the size of a major city's Yellow Pages and it is easier to handle.

Comprehensive Excel 2002 better than expected
I just purchased this book about three weeks ago now and it has been a godsend. From the Projects to the end of the project assignments to the online access to the ShellyCashman web site - you really get to know about Excel! If you are considering MOS certification as I am, this book has to be on your shelf! I will be getting the remaining ones as I focus on the other MS Office Applications. This is even a bit better than the New Perspectives Series simply because there is more reinforcement for each Project - tests, games, quizes, etc. It all makes learning Excel more fun. I have been able to move quite quiclkly into the second section - Project 4 - but still plan to review the previous projects. I find the Projects are easy to make notes from as well so they make a great review anytime! And everything is very well explained with some added features throughout the book! If you have the chance I would highly recommend that you add it to your book shelf. Chances are though it won't be spending much time on the shelf, if you're like me!

A good place to start learning Excel
If you learn best through hands-on, then get this book. It covers most aspects of Excel 2002 that an average user would require in his or her daily work. But if you are a financial analyst or statistician who rely on Excel, you would do better getting something more advanced and specialized.

I taught from this book
This text explains a concept, and then tells you step by step what to do, with many illustrations containing little labels explaining where everything is on the screen. The tutorials are followed by step by step examples that repeat the concepts you learned with different small projects. Then, there are series of projects for you to tackle on your own, labeled with icons that show the level of difficulty. There are also links to websites containing multiple-choice questions (and answers) and games to help reinforce the chapter. I have taught from many tutorial books, and this is one of the best. I set my class up as a lab, and students work their way through this book, while I monitor and help them when needed. Outstanding, practical resource
Each of us on our data analysis team were given this book and have used the StatPlus add-ins to create control charts for various processes that we report on, with great success.The add-ins will work in Office Excel 2003 as well.Our company has seen substantially increased productivity and success as a result of the analyses that we are able to do with this book.

No Support Whatsoever
I have to say this book really does an okay job providing ways to use Excel for data analysis. But if you have ANY problems with their Add-Ins not working, the support people will just tell you it's an Excel problem...duh! Buy this book if you trust their Add-Ins will work on your computer. But if you encounter problems that you can't solve via the Microsoft help function, don't expect any help from the support that's promised in the back of the book. Might be ok for some users
Charts are not given much coverage. Chart data is not given much coverage. From a programmer's point of view, simple excel vba object graphs and explanations of properties would be more helpful. Some examples come straight from the MSDN Office developer sections. I really wish authors would refrain from the cut and paste of the MSDN.
