This is more of a "getting started" book
Microsoft Press publishes a bunch of books on the latest version of the Office suite (Office 2003).This book "Office 2003 Inside Out" covers all the major applications in the suite and serves as a starting point for someone who's new to Office or just wants to know the most useful features without being burdened with the advanced details.Each Office program is covered for its most oft-used features.When you are ready for the advanced features, you'll need to get the separate "Inside Out" books for each program: Outlook 2003 Inside Out, Word 2003 Inside Out, Excel 2003 Inside Out, etc.These latter volumes (which I'll review separately as I read through each of them) are truly the advanced user's most valuable weapons in conquering the monster known as Office.
Okay, But Not the Greatest

good for a beginner
I have some experience and picked through the book for things I did not know about.A lady that I work with is a true beginner and is learning a lot from the book.It is an older version than I planned to buy and some of the menu's are not exactly the same.All in all, great for a beginner, and not too bad for someone with a little experience.

My Excel program
I haven't completley finished the manual, but so far I have really enjoyed it. It is written in a language that is easy to understand and it doesn't get overly technical.
Simple to Follow if You Read the Whole Book

Great reference book
"Programming Excel with VBA & .NET" is certainly a very 'weighty' tome. At around 1100 pages you certainly get a lot of paper for your money!However, do you get value for your money? I have yet to read a book on this topic which is more comprehensive in its coverage in terms of the description of the Object Model and the properties and methods, in many cases complete with useful examples. So in that regard it is an excellent reference. The benefit of the author being part of the Microsoft OLE Automation team when VB was added to Excel is very clear. The book also covers VBA itself in good depth. However, I feel that much of this could have been usefully relegated to a reference Appendix. If you are buying this book to learn VBA as such then there are many other excellent choices. The value in this book is in the application of VBA to Excel. You should not consider this book unless you are already very comfortable with VBA. If you are only just learning VBA but try to go on to read the rest of the book, you might find it hard going.
Comprehensive and Authoritative
When you attempt to get into a new area of coding, it is best to have an authoritative reference. Confidence in your source really helps in getting through the inevitable rough spots. "Excel with VBA & .NET" seems to fill the bill. It certainly does not hurt to know that the author was on the Microsoft OLE Automation team when VB was added to Excel.

Excellent Book
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to become certified or just wants learn how to use Excel. The book is easy to read and the step by step exercises make learning new skills effortless. With all the material covered, you are sure to find what you are looking for. Showing multiple ways to do one thing was also a big plus, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has the need to learn Excel.

More than an MOS guide
Although the book is a study guide for MOS, you don't have to be taking that exam(s) to benefit from this book. If you are intimidated by spreadsheets, and want to get started with a text book equivalent of your school books, this book fits the requirement.
Exactly The Level I Needed
When I saw this book on the shelf I almost passed it by. The blurb on the back cover talks a lot about this being a study guide to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist test. I wasn't interested in taking such a test, I just needed to know more about Excel for a project that I had to do. But I picked it up to look over and was surprised that it contained exactly what I wanted to know.

i read and followed the examples closely. learned many real life functions which i can use. very easy to read and follow. clear and crisp. no flowery jargon. i even enjoyed it and use it as my reference book in the office.
Great quick reference
I have been using Excel for years doing data analysis and charting. I found the short, easy to understand write up on Pivot tables worth the price of the book. Plus there are dozens of other tips that have already made me more productive.

not for me...
if you're a looking for a book that will help you greatly in your office work and you already deal with excel on a daily basis, you don't need this book.i deal with excel everyday, using its advanced routines like the stats functions, the maths, and the database/pivottables... this book just basically sums up everything you can discover on your own by simply using excel or by scrutinizing existing templates/excel files from other advanced users.give it a pass if you think you've mastered excel somehow.(i must have read the description wrongly - because it promised "wonders"...)perhaps the other books would work better. ... Not the Bible!!
The book claims to be the Bible, which to me means that it is the authority on the subject...it isnt! To its credit, the book does cover a lot of material and gives you a basic understanding of the components of Access. However the major problem is that the book offers very few examples. There is a CD that comes with the book, but why do I need to reference a CD for every detai?! In fact the CD isn't referenced much in the book at all.
Not solution oriented enough
I've been using this for a few weeks and like the accompanying CD which allows you to search the entire book easily.What I don't like is that too often I found myself struggling to find solutions that existed but were not documented.Like what do you do when you've set up a report and want to add a field that's not on the Field List.The trick is to go back and expand the query the report is based on to include that field but you won't find that in here.Instead you might (as I did) struggle with Text Boxes that allow you to build expressions based on the field you want, but you come up with an error message.Also they are so proud of their sample database that you find yourself having to go into it all the time to understand their explanations.I find myself, instead, turning to Access's online help for much of what I should find more nicely explained in this book, both with and without the examples.

A waste of money
This book is so riddled with errors, I can't believe it was published.Bad grammar, mislabled pictures, erroneous statements -- you name it. Wiley should be embarrassed to have put out a book this shabby. ... Read more

Excellent for Intermediate to Very Advance Analysis
I borrowed this book looking to perform one specific task, which I found at the end of a chapter. I spent an hour working through the entire chapter instead and easily learned, understood, and REMEMBERED how to perform a variety of tasks dealing with macros. The problems are simple, GOAL oriented with excellent recap sessions for memorization. Tasks designed as springboards for more advanced projects.
many detailed tasks
The authors have gone to some length to comprehensively explain and test many aspects of Excel. It's probably accurate to say that the testing is as important as the teaching. The book is geared explicitly to letting you do numerous specific tasks (or problems). Vital in internalising the information in the lessons.

Excellent reference
This book is very good for learning your way around Excel and its formulas.I am fairly comfortable in Excel and still found the book extremely useful.There are many formulas that are explained which I did not know existed that have made me much more efficient within the program.

Worthless for Word
If you just want to switch from VB to C# and are looking for a good how to reference this is not the book for you especially as it pertains to Microsoft Word.There is a solid description and how to for the range object, but that's about it.Word's Bulleted/Numbered List object, arguably the most convoluted of them all, doesn't even get mentioned and tables are glossed over in barely 2 pages.

Worst prog book i have EVER read
THERE IS NO CODE Download, you get to ALL THE DOCUMENTS YOUR SELF, I have read most of the word portion (that's why I bought the book) If I had written this book I would have created an integrated application. That's what office is all about right?I think this is a great egghead book, but for learning TERRIBLE.

Purchase at your own risk
I should have known better when I read a review that started with "this book is a work of art..."Are reviews like this written by someone close to the authors??Needless to say, I purchased both the desktop edition and the enterprise edition and have found myself turning to other Access references instead (or searching Google Groups for info).
Probably good if read like a novel
This book is a paradox. It's huge and filled with lots of information. It weighs a lot and has lots of pages.
