A Useful Book!
I've read several books on programming, and several on Linux. This book covers a ton of stuff, some easy, some complex, but all useful.
Gets you up and running with Linux programming
All the topics that one needs to read to come up to speed with Linux programming, development and maintenance, scripting and even tuning are covered in this book.The author starts with the basic architecture of the Linux operating system, and delves into the details of each part: scheduler, memory manager, virtual file system, network, ipc and init.The reader starts with an overview of what the Linux operating system looks like "under the hood", and is taken thru a series of sections that cover application development using each section of the Linux kernel.Overview application programming, performance analysis and debugging using various GNU tools such as the the GCC complier, make, gcov and gprof are given first and are used throughout the book by the author to further demonstrate the features and benefits of the available GNU tools.
Great introduction to Linux Application programming

Overrated Linux programming book
I read both editions of this book. When I read the 1st edition, the 2nd was not out, yet. Then the 2nd came out, I read it, too, hoping it's much improved. I was not impressed, however, either. To me, there is plenty of what listed in the book, but not enough why on the things listed.
A lot of good info in one place, but organization needs work
The Linux operating system provides a sophisticated framework for running programs. Within its sturdy covers, Linux Application Development by Michael K. Johnson and Erik W. Troan provides much of what intermediate to advanced programmers need to know to take advantage of that framework.
Will become a well-worn addition to your programming shelf..

While I can sympathize with some readers who may have been expecting a different book that covered the topic of cluster building in a different way, I would like to respond with several facts to clarify issues surrounding "Building Linux Clusters": Goodcluster overview - bad installation instructions
This book describes a good overview of what a cluster is and how it operates, but the installation instructions were horrible, directories on CDROM were different than stated in the text, files were located in the wrong directories, kernel had to be modified to use network card, etc. Didn't anyone try to build a cluster using this text before it went to print?I'll keep looking for another book on clustering.

Amazing learning experience
Most of the O'Reilly books I have looked at don't read as well as this one does. I am at working building a super computer now. While the author is involved in stock market work I don't find him condesending or snobby or like he doesn't have time for me. He tells the straight story of how to build a super computer with all the practical details you could want. I read it from the school library first and thought I wouldn't buy it myself but I have and now am really enjoying reading it. I am learning all kinds of things in the process. ... Read more

solid book, about much more than just UML
I've read several of the books in Bruce Peren's Open Source Series, and this is by far the best.I read it cover-to-cover and enjoyed the author's relaxed and informative writing style.
awkward title
Dike invented the User Mode Linux, as well as being the author of this book. The latter is hence quite authoritative. It has several useful reasons for runnng "UML". Like being able to set up and test a network of such virtual machines, and to do this in an automated fashion. Whereas if you have a network of real machines, changing network configurations inevitably involves a lot of manual work.
Learn User Mode Linux from its developer
UML is a great tool for all sorts of applications and projects, but the biggest attraction for me is the opportunity to learn more about the Linux kernel itself.

Great intro to Linux internals
I found the explanations in this book to be very clear, giving enough detail for a good head start into Linux internals. The book briefly explains the OS concepts, such as semaphores, virtual memory, etc., followed by an overview of how each is implemented in Linux, and code snippets. A liitle out-date, but still a good book for OS concepts
This book is a little outdated today as it covers the older 2.0 kernels. If you are reading this book and following it up on a 2.4 kernel you will find many changes.The book does contain the source code of the reference kernel it is written on. Not recommended for educational purpose

good setup advice
Contains much useful advice about the environmental needs of a cluster. Especially power and cooling. Plus it describes ancillary equipment like racks and switches. The latter are important, because without fast communication between the nodes in the cluster, performance will rapidly degrade.
Consider the Alternatives.

Dry but workable
This is definitely not a fun book. The topic is pretty dry all on it's own but the authors here didn't help matters much. It's a clinical work on the fundamentals of the LSB at the code level. There is some information on the organization of the committee and the current status of the standards.
A dry read, but a lot of useful information
Just because Linux is under the GPL, some people believe that it's pretty standardized. Actually, each distro has its own little additions and, consequently, quirks. Writing an application to work reliably under all variations is not a slam-dunk. The book Building Applications with the Linux Standard Base is a reference manual for application developers to make sure their programs will work across the Linux map.
avoid linux fragmentation
A strong claim about linux is that an application developed under one implementation [like Red Hat] will run unchanged on another [like SuSE]. This is seen as a big improvement over the fragmentation of the unix market.

Very Useful
It is practically impossible to find a good book with hands-on approach on information security. This book is one of the few that will show you HOW-TO secure your system and not just why you should do this! Also, security forensics chapter is my favorite... I recommend this book for anybody who is interested in UNIX and wants to know what could be done to protect the box using only OS bundled capabilities. As a security administrator for a company on a budget I get used to only rely on freeware or open-source tools to protect the enterprise.This book showed me that it is possible to use only out of the box solutions to achieve the same results! I would recommend it for everybody who is prohibited to use freeware and open-source tools for information security. Great book!

Tons of practical information!
This book is one of the best I've read about UNIX security. Dr. Loza provides hundreds of hands-on, practical solutions for how to investigate suspicious hackers' activities, secure the system, or protect you on the Internet by using only "native" UNIX capabilities. This book is very unique in the approach that shows you how one can do absolutely the same things to secure your UNIX box that freeware or open-source tools offer - if you are creative and hove some scripting skills. Using freeware and open-source applications is prohibited in many companies. This is why this book is absolutely the best! Especially I loved the Forensics chapter. Perl is the most difficult part of the book
A straightforward little book. Essentially a unix text about sed, awk and Perl. Ostensibly, it has to do with computational biology and the parsing of the various common data formats in that field. But a perusal of the book shows that the scope is more general. The biology formats are used as case studies. If you are in high energy physics, for example, and you have accelerator data in some other format, the book might still be of use in helping you parse out what you need.

Re-hashed content, amateurish advice
Programming KDE 2.0 is largely a re-hash of other publicly available material, interspersed with the author's amateurish pontification on user interface and application design. Okay for some things
This is a pretty basic book. It's reasonably thorough when it covers working with KDevelop and building a project. It's also reasonably thorough covering the dialog boxes and GUI widgets available to you. And it has some coverage of other topics like XML-configured GUIs, saving data to file, and developing your own components. Ok but not that great...
Granted, there are less typos in the book than in the review given by the author himself you read above. The book is ok, a bit confusing with many missing parts. I returned it because after buying it, I would still go with the online documentation and tutorial. I haven't seen that much more material covered in the book from what I could find online already, and it deeply hurts me to see so many good trees killed by the us programmers. Note to the author: It would have been nice to show us readers some humility and rate yourselfwith something other than 5 stars. I gave you a 1 star to compensate for your choice... ;-) ... Good resource for those who want to get a feel for what's out there

Extremely readable, very informative, and deep without being
Java was developed to be a cross-platform language. "Write Once, Run Anywhere" is the slogan, and an admirable ideal to attempt to reach. So when I first saw the title of the book Java Application Development on Linux, I expected to find descriptions of some idiosyncrasies in the Linux environment that affected the "Run Anywhere" part of the equation. What I got was a lot more.
