4-0 out of 5 stars Good description of the mathematical models used by SPICE
This book incloses most of the mathematical equations of the models used by SPICE and helps good by solving problems with the convergence, written by one of the designer of SPICE A. Vladimirescu

4-0 out of 5 stars Spice made easy with clear thoughtout format.
This book has just about everthing you want toknow about spice from it'shistory in early 60's, to solving convergance in array of circuits, whichare difficult to simulate.I found the book to be useful for it's tables toconstruct better and more models than I had ever imagined possible.Theauthor does use alot of mathematical expressions to explain the spicesyntax, but the format isgreat, and well thought out. This book is the"toolbox" for spice. Others fall short, but this book I'm gald tohave on my shelf. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Entity Relationship Modelling considered Harmful
Prospective buyers should be aware ERM is a mistake. It is a vastly oversimplification of actually modelling, being incapable of representing many fundamental features of any relational model and even being misleading.5-0 out of 5 stars Case * Methods: Task and Deliverables
I work in the Information Technology Section for the Department of Natural Resources. This review is for the book Case* Method: Tasks and Deliverablesby Richard Barker ISBN 0-201-41697-2. 5-0 out of 5 stars Big Concepts - Plain English
I have to concur with the other five star reviews on Barker's book.I spent hours in a Borders evaluating which book to buy to learn Entity-Relationships. This was the book I picked and I never regretted it. All other data modeling books make far more sense after reading Barker's first two chapters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All around great book on the subject
This book was quite revealing to me. It is basically split into two halves: the first part talks about specific game types and how developers have traditionally used AI systems for each, and the second part which covers the actual code implementations for these systems.
3-0 out of 5 stars No real meat and potatoes, but many appetizers.
First, I would like to address the comment a reviewer made about the book being no good because it utilizes OpenGL.
2-0 out of 5 stars Scattered, superficial treatment
The book is trying to do too much but end up delivering little. There is also not enough code to illustrate the concepts.I would recommend Matt Buckland's AI books if you are actually looking for a practical guide to help you develop your own AI system. If you must buy, check it in the bookstore before you do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best introduction to neural network models of cognitive processes
"Computational Explorations in Cognitive Neuroscience" provides a very readable overview of state-of-the-art neural network models for human cognition with an emphasis on both biological plausibility and experimental (psychological/cognitive) evidence.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new paradigm
In this book, research themes, which include perception, memory, language as well as high-level cognition, are explained in terms of computation.Their theory is based on brain science, computer science, and psychology.Though the authors speculateabout the functions of each part of the brain and the relation among them to some extent, the authors propose a new paradigm to existing sciences.Their integrative approach and method are very simulative, and I've got a lot of hints from this book. But I don't need the usageof particular software, PDP++ in such a theoretical book. The authors explain and demonstrate their models and theories using PDP++ at the end of each chapter. If you want to study how to use PDP++ as well as their theories, this book will be extremely good one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Readable User-Friendly Book on Innovation
I am enjoying this book. I like the title "Serious Play", but I dislike the sub-title "How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate".Companies don't innovate people do is my thought.I think the author could have taken this concept one step further. That is tie in the concepts of how innovation relates to chaos theory and fractals and larger concepts. The author's ideas are not that new to me because I am a project manager in a software engineering environment where prototyping and iterations is the name of the game.We have at most 3 months to make a difference, to deliver and then we are swept into the ocean of change. You have a small window of opportunity before both the game and the players change.
5-0 out of 5 stars Three years on, still a great book
Here's the best review I can give Michael Schrage's "Serious Play": Three years on, it's consistently the first book I pull out of my bookshelf when I'm looking for ideas for presentations, thoughts on introducing new products or services, etc.His commentary on "mean-time-to-payback" is something that will stick with you for years. It's brilliant stuff, written in clear, concise terms. And, surprisingly, very little of it is dated.Unlike many books from that era, there's no .com or Enron fixation for the author to be embarrassed about.Schrage's examples are pulled from health care technology, animation, theater...in short, an eye-opening spectrum of ideas.I consider "Serious Play" one of my best purchases ever.

2-0 out of 5 stars Preaching to the choir
This is a good book for someone to read if they are skeptical of the benefits of prototypes. However, since I already know the value of interactive prototypes I became quickly tired with the book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction in causal Modeling
The book by Korb and Nicholson is very readable and structured. Starting with some background information in statistics it comes directly to the major topic of the book - bayesian networks. The theory thereof is nicely evolved and applied to small examples to demonstrate its usage. Each chapter finishes with a short summary and bibliographical notes for further readings.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text
It is difficult to assess a review without understanding the biases of the reviewer.I fall under the category of researcher/practitioner when it comes to reasoning with graphical models.I am familiar with and make use of several books and papers on this topic in my work.Of the set of standard references (Pearl, Jensen, Neapolitan, Jordan, Cowell et al., Borgelt & Kruse) the text by Korb and Nicholson (K&N) stands out in terms of its clarity and accessibility.Does the book have everything one would ever want to know about Bayesian inference? Not by a long shot.Is it, however, a good place to start?Definitely. The basic concepts are presented relatively completely and with clarity.I consistently recommend K&N over other alternatives to colleagues new to the field. Is there a chasm separating concept and algorithm in the book?I don't think there is, especially relative to other references. With tools such as Kevin Murphy's BNT, or Netica available on the Web, it seems to me that providing a solid conceptual framework becomes paramount for a textbook such as this.I believe K&N succeed admirably in this sense. Why four stars and not five?Even for an introductory text such as K&N, it would be nice to have more development of some concepts such as causality, context specific independence, or loss of independence in dynamic nets.Although it won't be your last book on reasoning with graphical models, K&N should probably be your first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative
In the part dedicated to general algorithms, very interesting new presentations or generalizations, made this work attractive at the theoretical point of view. Extensions of booth algorithms and generalizations to base B operation make the work innovative at the mathematical point of view. At the implementation level there is very good and innovative ideas towards special applications in FPGA (mainly Xilinx oriented). It would have been desirable to cope with some other technology, but the book may be considered self containing anyway.
5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative
The presentation of arithmetic theory and applications is innovative. Some of the topics are inedited; they present new approaches for both algorithmic and implementation aspects. It is a very interesting reference book for what refer to computer arithmetic in general and special purpose arithmetic circuit in particular.
5-0 out of 5 stars Original
This book is quite original in its presentation. The selection of implementations is of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING BOOK--Race to build first intelligent robot.....story of
A totally amazing and beautiful book-- I know some reviewers were turned off by the cover which is totally realistic and a bit bio looking for some...but the robots are coming and many are going to be in the biotech area to start with so I think the cover is appropriate...anyway....of course robotics is part of our life and most of our products and services anyway - from the black box in your car to auto factories where they do precision work over and over 24/7/365 to the next generation of prosthetic limbs-- even my dad has a robot knee....You've seen them in the movies where they do the intelligence and GPS tracking....like spiders, crabs, and bugs they whirl around walls, floors and climb with ease....The name of course comes from Homosapiens and then combining it with Robots -- thus Robosapiens....the book is by award winning juournalists Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluiso and includes hundreds of photos of robots, pioneers and even field notes...it's a field guide to our mechanical future according to the cover notes...Sir Arthur C Clarke says "this is one of the most mind-stretching and frightening books I've ever read...the images reveal a whole new order of creation...about to come into existence...no one who has any interest in the future can afford to miss it!...from the 6 inch long Unibug -- who looks SOOO real to a robotic articulated hand from a German Aerospace Center...looks at such leaders as Hugo de Caris of Starlab in Belgium who it says hopes to become known as the father of the Artificial brain....to Hondo's first walking robot P3 to of course the Mars NASA Jet Propulsion robot Rocky 7 on the Red Planet...Will we be replaced by robots-- my guess is it's more likely we will ASSIST robots or they will ASSIST us -- but lets watch to see that the brain in the box is not us -- like in the old Sci Fi movies....fabulous book -- amazingly up to date since it was published in 2000 -- gorgeous-- [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about models of the brain and psychiatry
This is one of those precious books I love for their clarity and density of real information. The author is a psychiatrist and a neuromimetic model enthusiast who tries to communicate his enthusiasm to the reader. There is no mistake when it is about things I know well (I am more into statistical learning than biology), even when the author simplifies the topic to make it understandable to the non-specialist. The figures also are neat and clear. A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reaffirms a new era - outstanding
As a psychiatrist who is concerned about reconciling psychoanalytic and neurophysiologic perspectives, this book provides a substantial foundation to this endeavor.I find the book notably helpful in teaching analytic andpsychodynamic approaches to new psychiatrists. It begins to suggest a newdiscourse through which clinical practice may be described.I am thankfulthat we have this book and look forward to more work by Manfred Spitzer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource For The Seriously Interested
This book is written, chapter by chapter, by many of the most important researchers in this field- Since it is an advanced text, the content is a bit uneven and varied in writing style- It is essentially a compendium of review articles by experienced researches covering the various facets of the DL community. The choppy design is a small tradeoff for being able to get some very up-to-date information on Description Logics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look no further for detailed and anatomically correct human modelling! Excellent book!!
If you want to learn how to model a detailed digital human, this is THE book for you! You start out with totally empty viewports, and if you follow the book you'll end up having created a model with an incredible amount of detail.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.
I used this as a class textbook and it worked fairly well. This is not a single program book so this will work well with whatever program you model with. Although, depending on what you model with, depends on if you need to go out and find plug-ins that will do what he does. The book is really good going through step by step. Although there are some occasions where he leaps forwards ahead with really telling you what to do. Also, sometimes when he gives instructions, there aren't any images to go along with them, so you have to end up guessing what to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars He thought of everything!
Given that you are already familiar with some type of modeling software, this book is the best resource you could have! The non-software specific approach of the book keeps it focused on the concepts of creating a good model rather than the user interface. Every detail of the body is covered with step-by-step diagrams, and a lot of it focuses on creating a topology that is animatable and will subdivide correctly (ie the mesh is mostly in quads). It also covers texturing, rigging, facial animation, both modeled and simulated hair, and simple clothing. The book discusses anatomy to the extent that it is needed to create a realistic model, and uses those concepts to demonstrate how the male model you create can be changed into a female, or into a fantasy character that looks completely different.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too complex!
I'm sorry, but this book went way over my head. Was this the plan, or am I just not up to all this?

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and rewarding, but not entirely satisfying
I read this book as part of a personal effort, stretching back over a decade, to find answers to some of the deeper mysteries surrounding that gray area of minds, brains, computers, and souls. An explanation for consciousness is central to such an undertaking. This book, like so many others on this subject, served to raise a lot of fascinating questions, illuminate a little around the edges, but ultimately leave the big mysteries undisturbed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Science is a great deal more than mindless computation
After reading again part of Roger Penrose's exhaustive book, my tentative conclusion is as follows:

5-0 out of 5 stars Best C++ Source Code available for MLFN.
"The principal focus of this book is the multiple-layer feedforward network (MLFN)."This network is the most common and most used type of neural network.I have all of Masters books and this is his best presentation and source code for the MLFN.Chaper 2. of the book is about a complex number version of the MLFN, but it also includes the common real number versions. Other chapters on Data Preparation, Frequency-Domain, Time/Frequency Localization (Gabor Transform, Fourier Transform, Morlet Wavelets) and applications.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent psychological science
Psychologists who think behaviorism has little or nothing to offer to a scientific account of cognition and emotion should read this book. Through coherent, conceptually pure theory and consistent empirical research, Hayes and colleagues have developed an account of these pivotal topics that may bring behaviorism back onto the main stage in psychology. Relational Frame Theory (RFT) makes a small handful of parsimonious additions to traditional Skinnerian radical behaviorism that appear to account for an impressively broad variety of clinical, social, and educational phenomena. RFT builds on the traditional strengths of behaviorism by bringing a small, core set of directly observable principles to bear on broad-ranging topics like language, cognition, and emotion. While Skinner's (1957) account of verbal behavior arguably minimized the importance of cognition and emotion, RFT recognizes their pivotal importance and points the way toward some novel and clever psychological interventions (most notably, Hayes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which is firmly grounded in RFT principles). In the process, RFT avoids the tenuous inferences and mechanism-postulating pitfalls of (for example) cognitive and psychodynamic theory, and avoids the scientific progress-retarding inconsistencies of theoretically eclectic approaches like cognitive-behaviorism. The biggest question that remains for the viability of an RFT approach to language, cognition, and emotion is: Is there predictive and influential utility in the approach? That is, does thinking about psychological and educational issues from an RFT perspective result in increasingly effective interventions? The answer to this question should unfold, empirically, over the next decade or two. This book is not for the casual reader-while RFT is at heart an elegantly simple set of principles, it is initially difficult to get one's head around the concept. But for psychologists & other social scientists with an abiding interest in solid scientific accounts of language, cognition, and emotion, this book is well worth the read. Coherent conceptual accounts based on good empirical data, like RFT, are very few and far between in psychology-and, collectively, are the best argument for psychology being classifiable as a science I have seen. ...
