5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on 80x86 Assembler
Great book to learn the basics of 16 bit and 32 bit Assembler coding using the 80x86 architecture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject
It's a well organized and clearly written book. I am reading the 4th edition and it's not about DOS anymore. The previous reviews on earlier editions should be removed. Another very nice thing of this book is it has a lot of exercises. Each section has about 10 small quizes, and each chapter has several bigger projects for you to practice. These are essential to learn a computer language.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage of a vital computer foundation...
Mr. Irvine's book is an outstanding introduction into the x86 microprocessor family and beyond. This is a great text for use in undergraduate CS classes or for any Joe who wants to learn to bust bits on bare metal. While some coverage may seem outdated (ala the days of DOS), only the initiated know that programming a computer on the lowest level possible is the ULTIMATE form of control.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Read this book Cover to Cover
Overview
4-0 out of 5 stars Electrical Engineering Student Review
While the book contains useful information, a great deal of it is available online in various places, though it is a good all inclusive reference. I think it will come in handy in the future as well as for the finer details of my Design for Manufacturability course. At times the content can be a bit dry, but that's to be expected from about any textbook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
As an academician this book is easy to read but practitioners will have no diffculty in understanding the content of this book. I rate this book as a great book because of its practicality and yet it is theoretically sound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This review refers to the 3rd edition.I've used this book for a course on assembly language and found that this book was all I needed to do well in class.I still find myself referring to it every now and then, and it's definitely the best book I have on assembly language. The author also has a very friendly writing style so that definitely helps.Important points are highlighted and placed in boxes so you keep them in mind when programming.Overall it's a great book, I highly recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, disjointed expos of ASM wrapped in trite banter.
This is quite possibly the worst book on any program language I've ever read; and as a CS student that's had to deal with quite a bit of books that talk down to you and read like a snapshot of a computer snob's psyche, that's saying a lot.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners
This is a very to easy to read book for learning the basics. Well written, but may be missing too many technical details for a higher level college course. ... Read more

This book contains lots of examples and source code so students/readers can get a firm grasp on the programming constructs of the HC11 language. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the Forgotten World of Assembly for Beginners
Last semester, I checked this book out from our school library and absolutely fell in love with it - it's superb. The author Duntemann has a clear, fresh, and very light writing style that's not loaded down with an overabundance of superfluous "geek-speak". Before delving into new concepts, Duntemann tries to get the reader to grasp, in a real world sense, how the concepts apply to the machine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best Assembly Book
The author starts this book out very strangly, but once you get into it you find that his craziness is well deserved.Programming is very difficult, but learning the basics is even harder. It starts out helping a person understand the numbering system of computers and then moves on into the meat of Assembly Language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage of ATT (GNU) Assembly
I recently had to port an assembly language program written in Microsoft assembly language (MASM) to Linux (GNU AS).This book saved alot of time by helping me to: (1) understand the differences between MASM & GNU AS, (2) efficiently compile a mixture of "C", inline assembly and pure assembly, and (3) use gdb to debug my port. Each chapter covers a topic in depth with numerous examples that include step-by-step walk throughs with gdb. Anyone who's interested in programming in assembly language on Linux will find this book a very useful reference and a great value.Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars If you have work to do then look elsewhere
I'm not sure why they put 'professional' in the title, because this book is an extremely basic introduction. When I think of professionals, I think of people with work to do. And if you have work to do, you will not like this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good at explaining the basics
About the syntax used - yes, through all the book only the AT&T assembly syntax is used. The obvious reason is that most popular compiler on Linux is GCC, which has GAS (GNU Assembler) as the behind the scenes assembler invoked by GCC every time you compile your code. And native to GAS is the AT&T syntax and not the Intel syntax, which is deemed more readable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting tips
Being rusty with 8086 code I found this book useful for speeding up bits of my C++ with inline assembly. I liked the examples like A&(A-1) to find if just a single bit is set andthe comparision in speed between a C++ routine to scan for a bit and the single asm instruction. A complete reference with some good tips.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's all there, but be careful
I recommend this book, with caveats.I found all the information I was looking for about Intel/AMD architecure (I was specifically interested in the 64-bit extensions). The charts showing which instructions are implemented on which model processors are a very big plus that probably cannot be found elsewhere.BUT:There are lots of little errors throughout that I could detect because of inconsistencies--I don't know how many more there are that I couldn't detect in material only presented once.Example:pp. 204 & 205 discussion of division, the text has the dividend and divisor reversed from what is shown in the tables. Also, the author tends to spend many pages repeating basic or similar information at great length (for example, treating addition and subtraction separately, repeating all the details) but some more complicated but necessary information is left unsaid (for example: What exactly do the two-stage square root instructions do?What on earth is a partial tangent or a partial arctangent (the discussion makes it seem the latter is just a division operation, which is not likely)? There is a whole chapter entitled "MASM vs NASM vs TASM vs WASM" that really only discusses MASM and certainly gives no useful information on the differences between those assemblers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
This is an excellent Assembly book. Fun to read, well organized, to the point, and up to date (vectorization, 64bit processors). While it is primarily a comprehensive reference of the x86 instruction set, it does not withold real-world tips and relevant background information and thereby becomes an invaluable guide to anyone seriously interested in addressing bottlenecks and increasing the quality of his software.

This guy REALLY knows his stuff, and the book is so easy to follow.I have NEVER done assembly programming, and didn't know ANY of the syntax. After a couple of chapters, I was programming in it like I had been doing it for years. The way the author lays things out makes it a breeze to learn how to open up the world of 8051/8052.I *loved* the book, and I use it as a reference ALL THE TIME.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great at getting to the point.
It wastes no words - it gets to the point and delivers the depth of knowledge that I would expect from a book of this price, although it does have lots of details. This is a great book - Its' only drawback is it needs a little bit simpler coverage as to the whys and how's.If you don't mind SUPER Details this book - WILL - teach you how to program in Assembler.

4-0 out of 5 stars not perfect, but very helpful
So it doesn't have MVCL or CLCL! The beginner doesn't need those instructions right away. I would recommend this text as a good one for the beginning student....if you want more detail, there are plenty of booksavailable. I didn'tknow ANY assembler, and this was the only text I usedto learn it...and I'm doing just fine. You can learn more difficultinstructions from theIBM principles of operations manual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date and very simplistic
I concur with the other reviewer of this publication.I had to use this text to attempt to teach Assembler, I was mortified. This text is so out of date that it is almost inapplicable today. The instruction reference isfor IBM's System 360.DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand; complements Muchnick's bible
It is a good book to read and understand. I would strongly recommend that a prospective reader read Muchnick's book before this if he/she is new to optimising compilers. Readers with some basic understanding of the structure of optimising compilers can read this book and get a good deal out of it. These books would complement each other well. I have read only a few chapters and I felt that it is also fairly deep in content (atleast to me as a novice compiler writer). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars better than nothing
The first 100 pages of this book were fantastic for concepts. After that, there were numerous code listings of various dialects of assembler that were each several pages in length. The premise is that you should learn to read assembler so that you can write better high level code. However, there is no tutorial on what the various assembler keyword instructions mean. This book feels like it was slapped together because it was the long overdue volume two in the series, and has so many references to the first volume that you practically need to own both. There is not enough on Java (or OO in general) as the reader's high level langauge of choice, and far too much on Pascal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent material for serious software developers...
Back in "the day", you really couldn't write high-level code without at least some exposure at some point to lower-level code, like Assembler. Now, you can pretty much be completely ignorant of what happens in your Java or VB code "under the covers".But that doesn't mean you can't benefit from understanding how your compiler turns your readable code into machine-readable operations.Randall Hyde does an excellent job in explaining all this in his book Write Great Code Volume 2: Thinking Low-Level, Writing High-Level.
5-0 out of 5 stars Help your compiler write better code
I earned my Computer Science degree several years ago. During my studies I learned languages like Assembly, Modula-2, C and C++ and even a little VB in a computer graphics class. I learned quite a bit about how computers work at the binary level and even got into some Electrical Engineering topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the greatest books about assembly
This is one of the greatest books about assembly you can buy...
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in this subject
This book is the best book I've seen in assembly language/architecture. It's very clear, thorough, and concrete. It is really superb in how it teaches system concepts. And it shows how C++ and Java works, in addition to how computers work. It has a great chapter on the JVM. It also covers the SPARC and the Pentium. By means of the included software, the reader can design, implement, and test new architectures.
5-0 out of 5 stars New approach to assembly language/architecture
I rank this book at the same level as the Patterson/Hennessy book on computer organization. P/H is more advanced on the hardware side (perhaps too advanced for a first course in this area) but much weaker on the software side. Reis' book is better for a first course. The software that comes with the book is well designed and works well. It allows you to work with the computer at both the machine and micro levels. I've been using the Linux version. Versions are also available for DOS, Windows, Sun Sparc, and Macintosh OS X. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars really good book
I am not looking to program directly in assembly but in higher based languages with embedded controllers....Bought the book just to learn a bit about assembly though....its a really good book and is full of info that will be helpfull to anyone learning programming in any language as they all are converted to assembly anyway.....never know when you might need some assembly knowledge to solve a problem or tweak a program written in a higher language...author explains things in a really easy to understand way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner book
I think that this is a very good book for learning how to program assembly language for Intel based processors. I believe it would have been better if more examples were given, with more concentration on the language instead of how computers work. I think that all the reading about computer architecture without any code got a little bit monotonous, but since the book is meant to be an introduction and not reference to the language that's ok. Overall this is a very good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not enough
I really enjoyed this book, and the author has a great writing style that makes the content accessible to everyone. There are a few things you need to consider before buying this book.First, it was written in the late 80's, so the technology described in the book has long since become obsolete. The author considers the 486 the best processor on the market, but we've come a long way since the 486.It's not as bad as it sounds though, since many of the concepts apply to todays computers and CPU's, and may be a good groundwork to building an understanding of todays complicated computers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Good Enough For Beginners
This book is a required text in an undergrad class on Assembly Language that I was taking. I found this book to be too difficult for a beginner simply, not because of the sophisticated concepts introduced here but because of the errors and lack of explanation. The latter half of the book is essentially like a reference and provided no explanation most of the time. Even for the example programs given in the text, there was not sufficient explanation. I also found that most of the programs (particularly in the latter half) do not work at all. I could fix a few bugs in some programs to make them work, however, this is a time consuming effort. Unless you have a really good instructor who can help you with the bugs and explanation of the code, I will not recommend this book. While I struggled with this book and managed to get an 'A' grade, I would look elsewhere if I had to do it all over again!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too concise for a college textbook
First, please understand that I purchased this book for a college class in assembly, but I am also a programmer with 15 years professional experience, and some of material is not new to me.I have read a great number of programming books, and with that said, this book has little value beyond reference. It makes brief mention of advanced concepts I am trying to learn, and then jumps elsewhere. The examples are hard to follow, and often to not provide instructions on recreating them.I am purchasing another book to supplement this class, as I will never learn the material from this book.
