3-0 out of 5 stars An OK Java Book -- Not as Good as Their Other Books
This book follows the Deitels' standard format and content used in the other two of their books I've read ("C++ How to Program (4th Edition)," and "C How to Program (Fourth Edition)").As before, the teaching method, programming style, most of the examples used, and most of the problems presented are largely the same but have been rewritten to a Java perspective. If you've read and liked any of the Deitels' other books, this book will be fine for you and you'll know pretty much what to expect from it.
1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this book
I am a programming newb with a geek streak a lifetime wide. I took a Java class this summer hoping to begin groking the one final frontier of computing that has always eluded me. We used this as the text. As somebody who teaches postsecondary courses in an entirely separate field, I feel this book is not a good first choice for an instructor in comp sci, especially for courses for nonmajors or beginners. The prose is exceedingly dry and longwinded *without real purpose*, and tests even my attention span... which is ordinarily sufficient for a continuous performance of the Ring Cycle. What really hacked me off is the way that the book handles terminology and syntax-- from the very beginning, the code examples often use parallel terms within the code in a way that makes it utterly unclear to the newbie whether they're staring down the barrel of a method name, a parameter/argument, what-have-you, which makes it very difficult to trace the logic of the code and get a good handle on the syntax. I have had far better luck grasping the concepts of Java and programming generally with Beginning Java for Dummies, believe it or not. I am a mature and educated adult actually INTERESTED in this topic and this book was absolutely dreadful to me-- instructors, please do not think you're going to choose this text for the present generation of undergrads and have it be anything but an utter waste of a hundred bucks for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
While I found this book informative and detailed, I think that may be the main problem with it.It is written in a confused manner that gives the reader too much information on each page.I was constantly feeling bombarded. The information is presented in several different ways on each page and it can get disorienting while reading. That said, the book is very thorough and well researched.I am not sure that it is anywhere worth the price, however. For a third of the money you might consider Java: A Beginner's Guide by Schildt, or one of the O'Reilly books. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Study Guide
Very Information Study Guide for the CCNA Certification Examination. Alot of new material since I read the 3rd edition of the same Study Guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best CCNA book for certification.
Although I am a reviewer for Cisco Press, I have found that the Sybex book series is much more understandable for the average person trying to achieve their CCNA certification.I teach the IT Mentor 2 Day CCNA Boot Camp and have used this book for the last 5 years.Over 5,000 of my students have used this book!
4-0 out of 5 stars Just passed CCNA, I would recommend this book.
I just passed CCNA with 974/1000.I used this book, Cisco Flash Cards and Boson NetSim 6.0.I dont suggest you to use solely this book and expect to pass CCNA.I recommend you to do plenty of hands on labs along with this book.I found that a lot of questions from CCNA exam were from this book, some even word for word (I noticed that from ISDN chapter).Although this book done a great job explaining but I wouldnt have pass the test with this book alone. The there are a lot of drag and drop questions and three heavy weight sims on my test.I hope this help, and remember "Ping" and "show cdp neighbor details" is your best buddy :)Good luck. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for your blue belt
Everyone who wants to write OO code needs to read this book. No, let me re-phrase, *must master* this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An approach to this software classic
"Design Patterns" (GoF = Gang of Four) is a signicant and, in many ways, a difficult work for the modern reader (me) to digest. The material in this book is highly self-referential: to understand a particular design pattern, it is important to be familiar withmany similar, if not all, design patterns.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic for OOP - truly a Gem - not much else to say
Like many of the typical Computer Science classical texts, you've got to read it, if only to say you read it :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars The one JavaScript book to rule them all...
I'm a technical trainer, and we've decided to distribute this book as part of our Ajax courseware. We've reviewed many other JavaScript books, but we keep coming back to this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best JavaScript Reference!
This is the 5th edition of this almost thousand page book (992), and has been pretty much the gold standard for JavaScript reference books.I have the 4th edition that came out a few years ago and it was worth upgrading to this new 5th edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone!!!
I am a super beginner programmer with NO experience whatsoever. Well, my buddy is profiecient in SEVERAL languages, including java, Visual basic, and python, and he wanted to learn C++, so i decided to learn with him. At first i went through countless online tutorials, then i went and bought some books, but they were all too confusing! So finally, i went online and did some diggina and found this book, so i told my friend and we both bought this book, and it is fantastic!!
    1-0 out of 5 stars F- -
This was the required text for an introductory C++ class I took last semester where I received an A.I point that out so that nobody will suspect bitterness on my part when I say that this is simply the worst textbook I have ever owned.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning to C++
This was the book that was used for a C++ class I took this summer. It is a good book, and made some of the more complex aspects of C++ easier to understand. The examples are clear and illustrate the points of the book well. The material is presented in a clear and logical manner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners
It is a very good guide book for beginners really. I knew maybe just a little about Mac. But definitely not enough to help me go though a smooth work process. This book teaches me shortcuts and the necessary surviving skills I needed. I would recommend to other people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Tutorial
Having switched from a PC a year ago and having suffered through 12 months with no manual, it is a relief to have it. It is written in plain English, very basic intro to Tiger OS X and should absolutely have been provided to customers free with the computer. Apple is too cute in assuming everyone, of course, is intuitive about "getting" its system. If you've spent much time in PC land it is a huge transition. This book is great because it assumes no knowledge and provides basic definitions. I also bought another "Missing Manual" for iPhoto and that was helpful, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A NATIVE WINDOWS C GUIDING ANGEL

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Window programming books
This book is one of the best because it forms a foundation for everything that comes after. If you want to understand Windows, you have to have it. It doesn't cover advanced topics, but in order to understand advanced Windows programming, you need to understand everything in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great foundation book

5-0 out of 5 stars Most O'Reilly book are quality references.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend an O'Reilly book to a beginner, just learning, but for anyone with some experience, these are the preferred learning & reference tools.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The examples are not easy to follow and it does not give sufficient explanation. It is basically useless to me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with a C++ background
My background is in C++ with some experience with Java and no experience with .NET.I didn't fully realize how similar C++ is to C# until I finished this book, and I think my money would have been better spent buying a book on .NET.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Ready for .NET 3.0 Yet?
Just as I was beginning to get a bit of a handle on .NET Version 2.0, along comes .NET 3.0 as part of the new Windows Vista operating system. To be sure, you can run it on XP with SP2 installed after you have installed .NET Framework 3.0. The book presumes that you have experience with .NET 2.0 and with C#. If you do not, the author recommends you read some of his earlier books.
5-0 out of 5 stars The long awaited Programming Windows, 6th Edition!
This book is the destined to be not only a classic but also the standard for WPF development. It's look and feel is reminiscent of his previous classic: Programming Windows. So much so, in fact, that you could call this his long awaited 6th edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive WPF Book
I have had this book for about 2 weeks now, as Amazon delivered it to me early before the official release.I am a tech book junkie.I buy a lot of tech books. This is the best programming text I have purchased in the last couple of years.Petzold does a great job explaining WPF from both a nuts & bolts prespective and a big picture perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deke - PhotoShop - McClelland
I am sure there are other books that might be easier to follow and that might offer more than this one for learning all of what PhotoShop has to offer, but I just have not found them yet. Light to read with easy step by step instructions for the beginner as well as the accomplished image processor.
5-0 out of 5 stars One-on-One -- it's not just another Photoshop book
Deke McClelland knows his subject very well and presents it in a clear and orderly way so new learning rests on a solid foundation. The format works: read the lesson, watch the DVD-ROM video lesson, do the exercises, take the quiz at the end of the chapter. Each lesson is designed to be understandable by those without much Photoshop experience and still include a few techniques that even experienced users probably don't know. And he does it all with good humor. Work files and video lessons are all included on the DVD-ROM in the book, which is bound so it lies open and flat on the desk without any hassle.
5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect jumpstart for Photoshop newbies
This was the jumpstart I needed to learning photoshop. This is not so much a tutorial as it is a get-up and start-using photoshop one-on-one session, exactly as the title suggests. So instead of learning the interface in text-book procedural fashion, it's kind of like apprenticing for the author Deke (who also wrote the photoshop bible book).BTW, the author is notably an Master at photoshop, as is apparent when he tells you "nobody uses this command, you can do that function with this new command here".There's a lot to be distracted in photoshop, hundreds and hundreds of different functions, and it turns out that many of these functions are obsolete and only left-in to satisfy old users, so having Deke point these things out is fantastic.Eg, unsharpen mask, obsolete.smart sharpen, da-shizzle.

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Far and away the best book for everyone!
This is simply the best HTML and CSS book.It has basically everything you need to know, with easy-to-find, easy-to-understand, and concise descriptions. It it not "web for dummies," rather, it is a very sophisticated and realistic approach to HTML and CSS, without a lot of hype or self-promotion.If you want to hear people wax poetical about the "EM" unit, you can get the book by Lie & Bos, but I think Castro's book is far more useful. She gives links to many web sites to help with more advanced stuff (Javascript, etc.), which is nice, but the book itself is incredibly comprehensive. And the layout of the book is a model for all instructional texts.A winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars For Reference or for learning
Elizabeth Castro has been writing Visual Quickstart Guides to HTML and web design in an easy to understand manner. Now she provides resources for those who would be interested in web design that will create sites that are usable for years to come. Since I first picked up the fourth edition of this book, I have been hooked on the series, because its explanations are written on a level for the average person. The organization allows the reader to move at their own pace and easily refer back to topics that they want to refresh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coding
This book was a real help to me when I first became addicted to coding. The pictures are quite helpful, or at least more helpful than long explanations, and Elizabeth Castro is a fabulous writer. I learned so much that I went on to learn many other programming and coding languages with ease. You don't need to have any experience to use this book, it explains everything. Visual QuickStart Guide's are the best type in the market, cheap and easy to understand. So if you are itching to learn another computer language, I suggest checking them out! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Included lab is !@#$!$#@! Shame on Boson!
The books are good, and the tests are closer to anything on the CCNA test, although I did notice some of the simulations were buggy with incorrect answers, but Boson should be slapped HARD for including the hamstrung Router Sim LE version. The help does not work. The web connect interface does not work. 2/3rds of the labs are disabled and the ones that work have 2/3rds of the IOS commands disabled. This is meant to prod you into buying the "Full upgrade", at a cost of well over $150.That is quite lame.In addition, the internet scut on Boson is that the Full version also is very buggy and not worth even half the cost charged. The Cisco Academy in San Jose is very outraged at Boson for its poor quality.Ask anyone there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
It is a great book which covers all topics in order to pass the CCNA exam. You have the router and switch simulator to improve and apply your skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thorough - but often filled with convoluted waffle.
This book starts out well, explaining the topics clearly and without a lot of unnecessary repetition. Unfortunately, the writing style chops and changes throughout the book with the worst written sections being a real chore to plough your way through.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best C++ Book
This is by far the best C++ book I have ever read. It is comprehensive, explanations are simple and to the point, and, up-to-date. I am referring to the 4th edition, of course. The earlier editions might be a bit outdated.

    4-0 out of 5 stars C++ Primer 2nd Edition: A review
Lippman's book contains an introduction into the world of programming in the C++ language. The book goes from simple basics, assuming you know the basic foundations of a programming language, to in depth coverage of C++ programming. It explains both with examples of the programming language and with detailed explanations of what everything in the explanations means and does. This book is an excellent tool for both learning the C++ language and referencing back while you are working on programming something. However, it is not for the every day reader, as it requires a previous knowledge of basic programming language. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things...
    Good:
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too much fluff...
I've been a Server OS administrator since 1991, starting with Novell 3.12. I started with OS2, Novell and then Windows NT in 1995 at the second largest retailer in the US and I've worked my way through NT 3.5 to 2003. I bought Minasi's NT 4.0 books and thought they were the greatest thing going, but I was still green and the other publishers were not up to speed. Now I own the Windows Server 2003 books Inside Out, Unleashed and Administrators Companion. I have read much of Minasi's 2003 book, but I doubt I'll buy it. I have to say that Minasi's writing style now forces serious administrators to waste a great deal of time wading through the fluff. His book is one of, if not the thickest and it's not because of the technical information. Just like his articles in magazine publications, his writing is oriented towards new or amateur administrators. I think if you have 2 of, or the 3 books I mentioned previously, you can skip Minasi's Server 2003 book. The single area where Mark has an edge over the other books is his discussion of compatibility with older, downlevel or non-MS workstation client OSes such as DOS, Mac, Workstation, etc. This same information was covered in his earlier NT 4.0 and Win2000 books, so if you have any of them, you're ok there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A response to Joaquin Menchaca from an Apple Certified Tech Coordinator
You know, there are times I despair at the treatment of Macintoshes in Windows-centric books. Obsolete information, badly written explanations of Mac technology, and general "macs can't do that" comments. I'll flip through Windows books at the store and shudder at the nonsense they spread about Macs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but a definite must read.
I had heard a lot of positive talk about this book, so I picked it up based on that...only to find I could read it online later. The book contains exceptional in-depth information about the Java language. The writing is conversational which makes it fairly easy to read. It is less a reference book as it is written to help you understand how Java was intended to be used. It is a definite read for anyone working with Java for the long haul. If you are coming from the C++ world, there are good comparisons and contracts between C++ and Java as well. The only down side, some of the examples do get a bit long winded. A clean up in this area would have helped the book tremendously.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Tutorial on Java
The 4th edition is updated to reflect changes to Java for J2SE 5/6.The content is easy to follow and contains insights on the use of the language's features and library. You will even find some critique of the language features which may be helpful when doing large software projects.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best.
I'll make this short. I depend a LOT on buyer reviews on Amazon to help me decide what to get. This book is the best book on Java, taking the reader from the basics right up to the sexy stuff in J2SE5 like queues and generics.
