Georg Omura's AutoCAD books are always the best
-George Omura's books are always the best of the group.I always recommend them to my clients and colleagues.His books are always easy to follow, if a bit too heavy for reading in bed.His added content CD's are a great bonus too.The whole idea is that you should step your way through the examples.Or even better yet, use them as examples to do a real project that you're working on (and getting paid for!).I always snag a copy of Omura's books as soon as they come out wheather I have that new version of ACAD yet or not, I know I'll need it eventually. Good Book overall, to learn or to fine tune your skills.
I used this book as a review, as I had not used AutoCAD since its DOS Release (R11) version in about 4 years. It helped me review basic drawing and dimensioning techniques.I found it easy to follow and I was able to pick up the 3-D modeling pretty easy which later helped me in learning AutoDesks Mechanical DeskTop. AutoCAD is not as roboust for Solid Modeling by the way, 3D wire drawings are pretty good though. I also liked the review of AutoLisp and the AutoCAD VBA techniques, I thought that this book to be very comprehensive.

Wonderful teaching aid!
I learned to use AutoCAD 14 confidently using this book and now use it at work daily.This book will give you an unshakable foundation on which you may become productive in AutoCAD>AutoCAD 14 is easier to come by andless of an expence compared to AutoCAD 2000.However, to make the stepfrom 14 to 2000 is a peice of cake.Read more

My Husband's professor recommended this book, and my husband loves it.It is very clear, topis are clearly and understandably explained and easy to find.Recommended for anyone taking a cad class or just wanting to learn cad.

This book covers very little on AutoCad 2002
I'm a newbie to Autocad.I was fooled by the previous reviewer, thinking this might be a good book to start out my Autocad carreer.When I got the book and realized that the content is too little and it mentions NOTHING on the 3D part of AutoCAd.I have to return this book and got "AutoCAD 2002: No Experience Required".Now this is a much better book to get started if you are a newbie.It covers most of the 2d stuff then has some intro to 3d.Then I got AutoCad 2002 Bible, which covers virtually everything a Autocad. ... It's better than nothing. But just barely.
While this text covers a great deal of information and is required at community colleges it's as exciting to read as drug warning labels. And you practically need a rossetta stone to drag the pertinent information out of the chapters.

In the book there are purple boxes with commands in them that are really helpful.

In January 2001, I got a job at an engineering firm to train as an autocad operator.I had absolutely no knowledge of Autocad.I came to this site to see if I could give myself a head start and in less than 40 hours I knew all the basics (and some shortcuts) that I needed to know for my new job.Long story short I got a $5,000.00 raise in three months and now I am training others in my firm on autocad14.To keep a step ahead I'm now reading the AutoCad 2000 by Frey.This book was easy to follow and Frey did a Great Job with explanations of terms and all the questions that I had were answered right there in the book.I'd recommend this book to everyone interested in learning AutoCad.It's a no brainer here.

The title says it all.
When they burned down the library at Alexandria, The excuse was if it is in the Koran than we already have it; if it is not, then we do not need it. What was true for them is true for us; if it is not in this book, then we do not need it. Or as Ed McMahon would say on the Johnny Carson Show "everything there is to know is in this book" inside autocad 14
The book itself is an amazing tool to have at ones side while learning this complex program.However, I see I'm not the only one who had problems with the CD.Most unfortunate as the files that do work are an excellentmatch with the scripted tutorials.

Excellent book, the CD-ROM does not work properly.

excellent teacher
I bought this book back in 1998, and I have to say the lessons were very straight forward, and I was able to learn autocad in one week enough to land a new job.. it's got my thumbs way up!

Don't Waste Your Time on Other Books!
I recieved AutoCad 14, the program, 4 days ago and this book 2 days ago, and I am already feeling like I can do something with the program.I felt lost and bewildered when I opened the program on my own, but thestep-by-step tutorials along with the examples on the CD-ROM are teachingme everything I believe I will ever need to know.I'm glad I decided notto put hundreds of dollars into a CAD course when this book is as wonderfulas it is.

For power users
This is not for Dummies or Beginners.It's a pretty comprehensive list of commands and their use.AutoCAD is too powerful a program to condense down to something this small and have it explain everything on a Beginner's level.I guess I didn't expect it to be for Beginners, and since I'm a power user, that really made me happy with the book.Some of the commands in here aren't very well documented any where else that I have found.I've moved on to the next version of ACAD now, so I'm willing to part with it (see used listings) but I'll be looking for the Dummies book for the next version now.

Good book for beginning CAD students
Our architecture instructor advised us of this book to get started in CAD design. Recommend this to new students who wish to dig into the program. Covers fundamental basics to R14 as well as provide a solid foundation to build from. Book does great job of addressing difficult areas such asplotting, layering, and scaling functions.

This book is NOT for beginners OR dummies
If you do not have sufficient AutoCAD R14 training beforehand, this book is very difficult to access and/or find information. The book needs more graphic representations which show the results-especially the dimensioncommands. Finally, the pundits in parenthesis were annoying. ... Read more

Excellent "stand alone" learning tool for AutoCAD.
I have learned more AutoCAD from this book, than from numerous other AutoCAD books, and local courses, combined! James Leach's well organized, straight forward approach to all aspects of AutoCAD, makes it possible (infact enjoyable) to become a proficient CAD practicioner, on a topic bytopic, self paced basis. After completing the 22 step WIREFRAME MODELINGtutorial in Chapter 37 (complete with detailed step by step instructions),one can immediately re-apply this proceedure to their own"select" 3-D illustrations! This text is an indispensablelearning tool and reference source.

Autocad 14 Instructor...Classroom Without Tuition
I am self studying Autocad at my work to be able to modify some existing Drawings. Two weeks ago I knew nothing about Autocad. As a student I always prefer a book that is intuitive enough to get the experience without havingto ask a million questions about what the book is trying to achieve. Good starter introduction to Autocad
The book is very easy to follow using an example based approach.The bookshould not be tackled without a copy of autocad14. It is basically anintroduction in depth in certain areas.For getting started on using autocadand to start creating drawings even in 3D it is excellent. The maincriticism for me was that the book is only for beginners and does not gointo enough detail on data exchange ie OLE ,DXF etc .
