One of those books you keep by the computer.
When the publisher calles this book 'Bible' he means it. 1200+ pages on how to use the software. The back of the book says that this book is intended for 'Beginner to Intermediate' users. To be sure there is an introductory chapter at the beginning of the book might be enough for a beginner to get started with AutoCAD. But I'd recommend starting somewhere else, like say a 'For Dummies' book.

makes autocad easy to learn
what i like about this book, over the books that come from autodesk, the makers of autocad, is that it's trimmed down. it isn't filled with lots of extra stuff you will never use. this book is simple and straight forward, which is what you need when you're using a monster of a program like autocad. the reason for the monster, is so anyone, with varied applications, can use this program. ideally, the program be would customized per use; eg there could be autocad for drawing small mechanical parts, one for designing hvac systems, one for architecture (this finally exists in the form of autocad architectual desktop), one for circuit design, etc. with specialized versions of autocad, a manual could be written specific for each use. maybe this type of manual exists already, using autocad for each specific use, but i haven't found it yet. Just as any study text should be, this book is plodding in its presentation. As an engineer familiar with AutoCAD 11 but very rusty indeed, this manual was a relief. I easily mastered all of its concepts and even managed to figure it out ahead of the author's demonstration. For its price, this is the place to go for any beginner or, like me, an old dog learning, or in my case, re-learning old tricks. The book starts out slow with basic line commands and builds slowly. It was difficult sometimes, and I sometimes referred to a second book as a reference; this is usually a good idea unless you are a masochist -- buy a second highly recommended book. Later, the manual goes into more sophisticated drawings. It has not been effortless but the author should be commended for achieving his goal of making learning AutoCAD as painless as possible. And, the price is reasonable. In 2002, I took an AutoCAD LT class. It was far more difficult and less comprehensible than this manual. It seems to me, that a company could save money by using this text instead and allowing self-paced training.
Recommended for beginners
Simple, step by step instructions make this book a very smart choice for beginners. I am a student and purchased this book for school. AutoCAD does take patience to learn. This book walks you step-by-step through the process.

Easier Autocad
I have four Autocad books.This one is far and away the best of the bunch.It is comprehensive, and most important to me, it is easy to understand. My computer went through a major system crash which took just about all my programs with it.I had to reinstall Autocad Lt. and then reconfigure a bunch of my personal customizations.I could not have done it without this book.Whenever I have a question about Autocad this is the first reference I reach for.

Review
The book is extensive. However, if you are looking to learn 3D max, you'd better look for something else! This book is a reference guide more than anything else.

Could use more detail
I found the book to describe a lot of the Acad funtions, but not enough detail in the functions I was looking for.

A decent reference
I bought the Mastering AutoCAD 2000 edition of this book few years ago and learned AutoCAD from scratch. This latest edition has continue to become a very good reference both for starter and intermediate user like me. Nevertheless there are few things that can be improved:

It was ok.
I used this book to get proficient in autocad 2006. It was tedious going through the first four chapters ( 1 week and then another for the rest of the book).There are probably other books as good. The book has slight mistakes, but all books do(on p112 on a image, arc explanation confusing just experiment). I'm thinking that an instructional DVD would be better. Make sure you download the examples from the internet for the book. It will clear up the explanations.

Great Book For Learning Autocad
I moved to Autocad from another drafting program. I never really took the time to properly learn Autocad.This book has been very enlightening.I now finally understand how Autocad works and how to use it efficiently.The book has an excellent tutorial in which you construct a small cabin.As you draw the cabin you work with the basics of setting up drawings and drawing lines.As you work through the book you work with elevations, text, dimensions, and also some of the more esoteric features of Autocad.I also bought two other Autocad books and this was by far the most useful.I highly recommend this book to anyone desiring to learn Autocad. ... An excellent book!
As a student landscape and gardenarchitecture (last year), i found myself lacking the courage and will to learn autocad as they taught us at school.
This is the one!
I used this book to teach myself AutoCad in two weeks and got a job as an engineer. (Yes, I still have the position!)

Excellent tutorial
Follow the instructions and you will be able to navigate through Auto Cad in no time at all. Easy to understand,well written and illustrated for the first time Cad user. Excellent reference manual.

THE Book For Beginners
As the title says, No Experience Required. I tried several AutoCAD books including the"Dummies" series and it seems they all assume that the reader has some basic knowledge of AutoCAD. Frey assumes nothing and teaches by example, which to me is the best way to learn. Start with this book, learn a chapter a day, and in a couple of weeksyou'll have a good working knowledge of AutoCAD. Then you can pick up some of the other books and go from there.

A Great CAD Resource!
This book is clear, concise, and well-written. It covers everything I've needed to know about AutoCAD, and probably everything I'll ever want to know. Explanation of the more difficult concepts is thorough and complete, and the exercises are very helpful, keyed as they are to practice drawings on the included CD-ROM. A great reference...structured by topic, so it's easy to find what you need.

teaching aid B+
This book takes a hands on approach to explain the ins and outs of autocad 2002. I am still working my way through it, but so far it has been a great learning tool. I don't know if my lack of indepth math skills is making a small part of the training hard or if there is a miniscule amount of of lack of clarity on the authors part that keeps me from giving this a solid A.

Check before you write anything
I am an AutoCAD instructor and we have been using tickoo's text in class for quite a few sessions now. We were delighted to see some great new and enhanced topics in the latest text and we recommend this text to our students and to anyone who is new to AutoCAD. Some of our students read the review here and were reluctant to buy this text. I would suggest that before people put their reviews here, they should check it because lot of people read these reviews and reading such reviews sometime distract them. Printout of help manual!!! This is more or less a complete print out of the Autocad Help documents.Might be usefull as a reference but definetly not a book to learn with.I have past experience but it has been a few years since using AutoCad.To get an answer from this book, be prepared to read about every little detail possible and written in a very "professional" language - but that's not really necessary.So many words are in bold, it is useless.
