3-0 out of 5 stars Great book; unethical publisher
This book is excellent. The author writes about programming in a clear and concise way that makes Java make sense. While Java may not be the simplest language to start with, it is widely used throughout the industry and provides a solid stepping stone to other languages. Savitch provides many examples of code and explains how it works, step by step. Too many programming books assume the reader will fill in missing pieces. Finally, an author who fills them in for us!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Written Java Book
The author, Savitch, writes some of the best-written, easy-to-read computer language books. The fourth edition is a concisely-written, enjoyable book with excellent examples and coverage of Java 5.0, which is the newest, latest revision as of January '06.
5-0 out of 5 stars 1st edition review
I have just completed (i need only two more chapters) the first of edition of this book. While not as exhaustive as the the edition for sale here I can tell you the author is good at what he does.I haven't decided if I am going to purchase this edition but let me say that the author's prose style reminds me of the best computer programming books I read while I was an undergraduate at the University of Florida in the early 90's.This book is suitable for teaching a first or second year class of computer science students at a university.Unlike those silly "Teach yourself Java programming in 24 hours" this is the kind of programming book that really teaches you something. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for learning Java...
If you prefer your computer technology learning in textbook style, then this is an excellent choice in books...Introduction to Java Programming - Comprehensive Version (Sixth Edition) by Y. Daniel Liang. It's an entire college-level course in Java in one very big (and well-written) volume...
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro through intermediate text
I've tried learning C++ many times and kept getting lost between the introductory and intermediate level texts. It was suggested that I consider trying Java, so I reluctantly found this text by Liang and am making my way through. Not only am I not getting bogged down in the C-compiler, but Liang's explinations and examples are so much clearer than anything I ran into in the C++ texts I had used.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Way to Learn
The author does a great job of presenting a complicated subject in an easy to grasp step by step method. Dr. Liang obviously understand how to both teach and educate at the same time. I found this book through a formal class, but we only covered a subset of the chapters. I took the book and finished on my own. The book is that well structured and written. As a pleasant side note, it also contains zero errors that I could find, contrary to may software books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Quick Read
This is a great book. How many technical books have you read in 1 week? That's what I did with this book.I love the Head First series. They don't make great reference books if you are an expert, but the expert on the title topic is not the audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars quick review
After I borrowed and read this book I decided to purchase it for the following reasons:
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to get you started
After reading a great book titled "Thinking in Java (JAVA 1.4)" by Bruce Ekcel. That book is so far the best book I have read on JAVA so far.It has TONS of information and for the most part the author does a very good job in explaining the information. However my main complaint with the TIJ book was that it was very hard to read at times due to the author's writting style.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for OOP, but not for real JAVA
I am using this book for JAVA class at my University. It really sucks, because my teacher teaches like most other books teach, and this book has some weird pedagogical method of teaching objects rather than syntax.Terrible when your teacher wants to teach his way and it conflicts with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars I am not an idiot
I am a beginner at JAVA and I have tried other books and spent a lot of time making poor progress as they try to talk down to you. I am not an idiot and appreciate the fact that this book is by a real life teacher who is aware of the failings of beginners and helps to put these right. Combine this with an online discussion group for problems and you have an excellent learning environment

5-0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail for Beginners learning Java 5++
Had my first taste of BlueJ as a college student at Bell College Hamilton, my Java skills have increased tremendously mainly due to the principles and concepts learned from BlueJ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visual Java Teaching Book
A good visual book, teaching by the UML diagrams. Suitable for beginners to intermediate level and a bit more. Nice colorful book. With the help of "Sample Developments" this book will give you some real practical experiments throughout each chapter. My suggestion for those who want to begin Java with no prior programming experience is "Java 60 Minutes a Day" which you can find it in my review list. In my view, as an intermediat programmer, is a bit difficult to understand core java with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner
This book is good for java beginner and it is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn java in a fun and with more graphic. However, there is less topic covered. It is highly expect that more area coverage in later edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get Java 2 4 Dummies first, AND this one
This is sorta sequel to first Burd's book and it goes little deeper, so I'd say it is a bit advanced for first Java Book. You need both Burd books on Java for a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Beginner Programmer Book
A few years back I tried to learn Programming by reading several books like the Perl book with a Camel on it's cover. I couldn't get past page 2 and gave up. A similiar thing happenned with C for Dummies, I couldn't get past a particular chapter on loops and gave up. Now, I think my logical aptitude is quite OK, since I have a Master's Degree in Finance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Java
It helps to have a little programming experience under your belt. That having been said, this book provides a comprehensive, and readable introduction to Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I just wanted to increase the rating of the book from the 3.5 stars it has.I disagree with the majority of complaints people had earlier on.This book is very good, and very friendly. It is broken into days, and each new day is a new section which builds upon previous days while improving upon the information you need to know.It repeats some information as you progress thru the 21 sections, but in a clever way.It may be a bit hard for a novice programmer, but programming is not an easy task to begin with. For someone coming from a background in C/C++ or .NET, you can probably get thru half of the book in a week.Overall, this book is very well designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start
This is a great book for anyone looking to start Java.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginning programmer
This book is the best for a beginning programmer with no experience. It guides you through the basics and does not bore you or assume that you know C or C++ like most other Java books.I have wanted to pick up some programming for a while and John Smiley's book was the only one I have been able to read from cover to cover and get something out of.I got the electronic version at his website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Easy to Understand
I took an intro to programming course with Java at my university a few years ago. The professor was really bad (barely spoke English) and needless to say, I hardly got anything out of the class. I was feeling a little anxious about future programming classes so I picked up this book at the recommendation of a friend. I was truly impressed with it. I really liked the classlike setting in the book which made you feel like you were actually participating in a course, not just reading another programming book. The explanations are worded in everyday terms so you don't have to be a software engineer to figure out what is going on. In fact, Smiley actually goes way more in depth than most first semester Java courses, yet presents the information so well that you don't even notice how much you are learning. This is probably the best book I have seen to teach yourself Java and would recommend it to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars For someone with no programming experience

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed because I expected more from this book.
I have been reading through the book. Actually it provides very clear explanations, but I had the impression the author talks too much and keep saying the same things over and over again. The book could be half its volume with the same content of knowledge. Besides the provided examples are a bit too simple and obvious.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book on neural networks using Java
Programming Neural Networks in Java will show the intermediate to advanced Java programmer how to create neural networks. This book attempts to teach neural network programming through two mechanisms. First the reader is shown how to create a reusable neural network package that could be used in any Java program. Second, this reusable neural network package is applied to several real world problems that are commonly faced by programmers. This book covers such topics as Kohonen neural networks, multi layer neural networks, training, back propagation, and many other topics. The content of the book is as follows: 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique book
I have received my copy of the book and I can't put it down. It has been great help with my AI research at the University. I have the other book from the same author "Programming Spiders, Bots and Aggregators in Java" and I have the same comments for both. Both are easy to read, have precise information and great code. Chapter 7 of this book "OCR with Kohonen Neural Network" makes the book more than worth it. Great stuff. I hope the author does not stop and keep writting books like these. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning AI and also experienced programmers alike. The author makes though topics seem easy. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Los objetos al "desnudo"
"Beginning Java Objects" es un excelente libro que muestra las minucias de los objetos, la manera correcta en que deben de implementarse, la importancia de la encapsulaci?n y de los beneficios que nos proporciona la herencia.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book really brings it all together!
I had the first edition of Beginning Java Objects From Concepts to Code sitting on my bookshelf for about 4 years.Meanwhile, I've taken several different Java training courses ranging from beginner to advanced level.I've been part of a development team, and although my role has generally been more of a business subject matter expert, I have also gotten my hands dirty and done some large chunks of coding, debugging, and refactoring other people's code.
5-0 out of 5 stars One program is enough
Regarding Brad's comment, the 'one program' is complex enough to give the reader a lot of practice in understanding the relationships between objects, and that seems to me (an out-of-practice former COBOL programmer) to be the biggest hurdle in understanding object-oriented programming. Barker's book gives more help in this area than the other Java books I've read. I read Eckel's Thinking in Java, and got lost by the middle of the book. Once I've finished Barker, I think I'll get a lot more out of Eckel. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's Java tutorial
As the title says: "Beginning...", so the experts that wrote a review shouldnt be angry. The author explains every term he uses [excellent teaching practice!], does not assume that you should "of course" "know" this... Naturally, if you are an experieneced progammer this book may be too long, but alas: read faster in this case.
1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE Editing - Great Book!, Highly Recommended
This is a great book, and the longest that I have ever read. Ivor's teaching approach, although frustrating and daunting, effectively teaches the language concepts you need to begin programming. You will find yourself adding code to an example and redoing it later and redoing it later... each time learning a tiny bit about design and some about the Java language. The big example (a drawing program called Sketcher) is developed over several chapters and is used to demonstrate all sorts of language features including a good intro into Swing.Even though I feel that this is a fairly solid book that I would recommend, I am only giving it 1 star to bias my vote and communicate a message to Wrox:Hire at least one book editor that has some quality standards. The book is fraught with mistakes (most don't appear in the Errata as of 2/16/06).

1-0 out of 5 stars ... a very poor programming book
The book is rife of unsound programming practices. On the cover, 'Ivan' tells you how good his style is and how he'll teach you a marketable skill - what he teaches you is how to write second rate scratch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I think that this book is a great place to start with Java.I have been reviewing books to replace Head First Java as a text at a local community college. To me the vast majority of texts out there do not deal with objects soon enough and spend too much time with GUI's and Applets without giving a good foundation in the language first. This book gives a broad perspective of the language without cluttering it up with a bunch of eye candy. It is the first that I have seen that deals with generics, threading, and enums and does so in a manner that will not cause the new user to choke. In addition to providing clear examples and explanations, the author also gives real world usages of the material taught. There are examples of when to use and not to use certain features, and what the pitfalls and potential traps are that a new coder might not be aware of.All in all this is going to make a great text.

3-0 out of 5 stars read dummies first
if you have no Java experience, this book throws you into the deep end of the pool right away. I purchased 3 books on leaning java for a beginner. This was the most valuable in the long run albeit the most difficult. There is no hand holding and lots of good examples with few mistakes and lots of multiple examples within a single example (confused, read the book and you'll see what I mean). I suggest you get this book but if you need hand holding, also bur Burd's java for dummes to start with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning--but won't get you "home"
This is a really good very basic intro--but it won't get you to a level of Sun exam competency because it shyes away from some of the crucial distinctions you need to know--like multidimensional arrays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for programmers with general knowledge
I bought this book and thought the programming projects in the book were awesome. All of the exercises are taught for use in game programming. While the author probably doesn't explain the language and fundamentals in depth (rather terse), he explains the fundamentals of how the games work.I've read Deitel's Java How To Program, and I recommend that to any Java beginners. If you want to learn how to program games in Java such as minesweeper, tetris, and others, get this book! It's awesome! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An enthusiastic writeup by an unexperienced jogl user
It is best categorized as a tutorial. It is not a book by any means. The tone of the 'book' is informal and tends to be 'cute' - which tends to be annoying at times. Noticeably the installation instructions are missing - which is not a big deal since i was able to google my way to proper installation in few minutes; nevertheless having included an installation section would have brought some authenticity to the book. Not all was bad about the book, what i like most are the chapters on lighting and other places where the author gives a refresher on several concepts (like matrix multiplication, field of view, camera positions etc.). I get a distinct impression that the author is himself new to the JOGL world (and perhaps to Computer Graphics) and hence skips over areas that he is not comfortable with himself. Since the author does not make explicit claims that this is a "Bible to Jogl" he can be excused for not being thorough in his
