Brilliant, beautiful,thought provoking and heart breaking
e-mail trouble: love and addiction @ the matrix, is a miraculous missive from the late S. Paige Baty. Part autobiography, part fiction, part theory, this book is unlike any other. I should note that I am not only a readerand reviewer of e-mail trouble, I am also a character: Sitting in a bar inNorthern California, Paige and I began to write a comic book.Wherepreviously we had played at being Maggie and Hopey of Love and Rockets, were-invented ourselves as Dr. Rocket and Fly-bi-nightly in a world of ourown. E-mail trouble is about trying to live, to love, to be in the world. The book is a love letter to Paige's many friends, but it is also animportant theoretical work, one that draws on Camus as well as Foucault, onKierkegaard and Norman O'Brown, Emerson and Pynchon, Louisa May Alcott andbell hooks, Kerouac and Plato. In addition to illuminating the work of pastthinkers, she also sheds light on our tired and wired culture, thedifficulty of inhabiting a female body, the importance of time and place,of communication and community. Paige was truly an original thinker, agifted teacher, and one of the best writers I've ever read.Reading e-mailtrouble made me laugh, cry and realize how much Paige is a part of me--andhow wonderful that is. There is no one I know to whom I would not givethis book, I can think of few gifts as great. Some of the background, but not the full story
It has been a few months since I read the book, just never getting back to writing a review. For whatever reason tonight is the night. A pre-dot bomb period piece
Reid's book can safely be characterized as a pre-dot bomb period piece. He writes the history of the Web as the history of making money in wonderously new ways. The actual Ponzi-scheme techniques by which much of the Web's money poured in (for a while) are not explored. But that is fine. Internet historians will refer to this now primary document as financial and cultural historians refer to the U2-can-get-rich books of the late 1920s -- that is, the ones written before the Great Crash of October, 1929.

A ghastly revisionist history for businessmen
This book is a revisionist history which attempts to give the credit for the development of the web to businessmen, and almost completely ignores the people who actually designed the architecture of the web.Even TimBerners-Lee gets only a token mention; and Ted Nelson, who inventedhypertext, multimedia and "linking", is completely ignored.Read more

The book is a partisan contribution to a long running skirmish about the dawn of modern computing. To what extent did Aiken influence the design of IBM's first postwar computers? Today, this issue is of interest only to the historians of computing. But Cohen takes us back to those early times. When the basic architecture was being laid down, and not all the implications were fully understood.

Fun to remember but no substance
Hacker Cracker. Just the name caught my eye and so I bought it thinking it would be a similar to Masters of Deception or Mitnick story, but it wasn't. The entire book is just Mr. Nuwere recounting his exploits from America Online to large corporations, throwing in a good bit about the mean streets of New York, and rounding out (literally) with some non-relevant martial arts. After reading it I was really let down. I was looking for something a little more definitive about computer security, the evolution of it from the time he was a kid to now, etc. Sad to say Masters of Deception was a better book than this but nothing will ever come close to the writing talent, intrigue, and plain storytelling than Cliff Stoll's book the Cuckoo's Egg. Maybe in twenty years if Mr. Nuwere wrote another book and explained what he's learned after spending some time OUT of the mean streets then perhaps it'd be a better book. Right now it's just a feel good made for TV movie.

Why bother?
Insipid. When I saw this book I was interested by it seeing that Ejovi Nuwere was from Brooklyn where I grew up. Sounded like a good story...I'll read it I said. Nice try but doesn't come through
It attempts to be great but really nothing interesting. Mostly about his growing up in the bronx and if he does talk about computers then you have to know computer to know what he's talking about. I t tries to be good but fails because it's to much of a survey of his life in stead of a telling of it. skim over it if you can find it in your library but don't bother paying to read it because you'll surely be disappointed. ... Scratch a free-marketeer and you’ll find a socialist
I am writing this after the appeals court has done the smart thing and voided the breakup remedy and exposed Judge Jackson for the little punk he is (His bias was obvious during the trial, despite MS's missteps. Congress should impeach him pronto). So I have perspective many of the other reviewers don't. Another Piece of Pro-Microsoft Propaganda
This book is obviously very slanted and biased in Microsoft's favor. It seems as if this book came straight out of the Microsoft book ofpropaganda! All of Microsoft's actions in the past are shown to be harmlessand not anticompetitive. In total contrast, the actions of Microsoft'scompetitors are shown in a very negative light. Even the most incidentalactions of Microsoft's competitors are shown in a bad light. It is odd thenthat Microsoft escapes this accounting. The author is obviously verypro-Microsoft and I would not be surprised to see that he may have closecontacts at the company. The author does not really show how Microsoft'sactions regarding "leveraging their OS into other software areas"could lead to destruction of competition in the computer industry. In fact,he either outright ignores this argument or downplays it!Even if you areinterested in how the web was won, this book does not really give muchinsight to outside developments. There is no real context given. Otherbooks fully account for the complex events surrounding the battle forsupremacy on the internet. This book does not. It skims over much of the"outside action" and instead focuses only on Microsoft and it'squest to dominate the new emerging industry. Of course, given that thisbook should revolve around Microsoft but it should NOT exclude other anglesto the story. The author takes Microsoft's side without justifying it forthe readers. And ultimately this EXTREMELY BIASED account makes the authorlose much of his credibility. Also without going in depth with the emergingindustry as a whole the narrative loses much of what would have been veryinteresting and engrossing story. By and large this is one of the worstbooks regarding this interesting period in the computer industry. NOTRECOMMENDED. FIND ANOTHER BOOK IF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE INTERNET ANDTHE "BROWSER WARS'.

Make sense of Microsoft's Internet offerings
Microsoft has released such a confusing stream of products into the Internet arena, it's hard to keep up with it all. This book provides excellent perspective and historical context for those decisions. I alsoreally enjoyed the compelling writing style of this book, especially on thefascinating charaterizations of the colorful players at Microsoft. Outstanding autobiography of a most unusual, talented couple
Fay Zadeh has done a truly marvelous job in recording everything wonderful that has happened through her life and her great many trips with Lotfi. It is an outstanding autobiography of a most unusual and talented couple who know the world and human beings so well. Her humorous but criticalobservations of people and their way of life are really unique, acute andamusing. We read the volume with a great deal of interest.

A fun and important book
Fay Zadeh has written a fun and important book that gives a rare glimpse into the personal side of scientific discovery. It is at once both a thoughtful travelogue through the recent history of the information sciences and a contribution to the sociology of science itself.

An Old (and ?politically incorrect?) saying ...
