5-0 out of 5 stars Great
yesterday I received the book by international shipping. As I have read the first 14 pages I am really satisfied with the cost that I pay. Thanks to God (to create such a man), thanks to marco and thanks to amazon of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide...
In order to understand some issues related with delphi 7, the book is very helpful. But is not a step by step book. In that case I advice to look for something more especific.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, a little exhausting.
This book is more of the reference type, not one you should try reading page by page as a tutorial. If that is what you are looking for, I recommend any beginner to check out 'Delphi in a Nutshell' , by O'reilly. Mastering Delphi 7 seemed to perfectly explain the IDE(Integrated Devlopment Enviornment), but over a course of about 800 pages. I dont think that the Delphi programming language was discussed enough in this book, it was more like a in depth way of explaining every feature of Delphi 7, the program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a Delphi programmer wanting to learn .NET, this is the book
As someone who used to use Delphi almost all the time, I hate to admit that in order to stay employable today, I'm having to know and use .NET. If you find yourself in the same situation, and you want a fast-track to .NET 2.0, then this book is at the top of the list.

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I found this book disappointing; it lacks essential ADO error handling details. Never having used ADO before, I had to deliver an ADO delphi application in a thight schedule and unfortenately this book didn't help me much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not only about ADO
Based on the title of this Delphi and ADO book: Advanced Delphi Developer's Guide to ADO, I expected "only" coverage of ADOExpress in Delphi. However, that's only a part of this book. The book consists of 23 chapters, starting with the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), OLE DB Providers, ADO and its role in the Delphi Database Architecture. ADOExpress components like TADOCOnnection, TADOCommand, TADODataSet etc. are covered in a lot of detail - as expected. However, apart from these "basics", the book also contains chapters that explain how to actually build ADO Applications, and how to do Business Graphics and Reporting with ADO. Even after those chapter, we're only still halfway the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the bad reviews, this book is worth buying
Well, to begin with I'm don't understand why the book got so many bad reviews. While it may not an advanced text, it does cover the Delphi side of ADO very well.I have an almost complete Delphi reference library (haven't added the D6 stuff yet).I can absolutely say that this book covers more ADO than the other books I've bought (D6 Developer's Guide devotes 6 pages to the topic, D4 Unleashed devotes NO pages, and Mastering D5 devotes less than 10 pages).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well done book
This is a splendid book.It systematically reviews the BDS/Delphi programming framework, and is written in excellent English. In contrast to the flood of books available to get new and migrating programmers up to speed with Microsoft's languages, Borland has lacked anything equivalent until now.As the owner/reader of about 100 Delphi books, some of which include more detail on much narrower topics and most of which are less well written, I was pleased to get and read this book.I learned things from it, even though I've been using Delphi since version 1.If you are looking for a first book on Delphi, this is clearly the best, although its target audience includes not just neophytes but also those considering a language/platform transition (via its coverage of C# differences). We need more such books. The fact that this immensely readable book cannot be all things to all people and (coming out within a few months of the latest release) cannot comprehensively cover all the latest langauge developments, does not detract from its intrinsic value.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inside Delphi 2006
At first glance, the title would lead one to believe that this book will reveal an abundance of knowledge pertaining to the latest version of Delphi called Delphi 2006.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Beginners
There haven't been all that many new Delphi books in recent years so it was pleasant to find this one. This book appears to be aimed at new Delphi programmers and it does a pretty good job of bringing them up to speed. Advanced Delphi programmers will probably not find a great many items of interest, but they might find a few. I've have used all ten versions of Delphi (and most versions of Turbo Pascal) and have about one hundred books in my library on Delphi. So, while most of the information was not new to me, I did run across one or two little gems I had not seen before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-done, Mr. Henderson, very well-done
When this book arrived on my desk, I didn't know what to think.Would itbe another 1000 page paperweight or something I could actually use? Fortunately, it was the latter.I can't say enough good things about thisbook. It's the best Delphi book I've ever come across, and I have most ofthem. There is an obsession with detail in this book that is refreshing inthese days of 10-pound books that say little and inform even less.I canonly imagine the amount of work that went into getting the tutorial right. A tutorial that spans several chapters? You don't see those anymore -- notin these days of books written before products are even released and thenrushed to print.I especially liked the *specific* coverage of connectingto and working with the various DBMS back-ends -- good stuff and quiteuseful. The Internet chapter is a real gem, too. There is no glossingover details in this book. The author obviously worked his behind off tocram as much helpful text as he could into this book. And I really likehis writing style.I agree that formal, stiff writing has no place intechnical how-to books. It's refreshing to find a book where the authorfocuses his attention on helping the reader understand his message ratherthan on stroking his own ego.Highly recommended.(Ignore the D3 on thecover -- this book applies just fine to D5).

5-0 out of 5 stars Yikes!
This is good. This is better than good. I consider myself a pretty good technical writer, but I've never been able to pull off this combination of nitpickingly complete technical detail, utterly clear tutorials, and friendly, readable prose.5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully comprehensive tome on Delphi C/S Development
I finally found a copy of this book on an online auction after several frustrating calls to the book's publisher, Sams.Seems that Henderson's book isn't being reprinted due to a dispute between him and the publisherdespite repeated requests from the Delphi community to at least keep the D3version in circulation, if not update it.Read more

This is a fantastic book for newcomers to Delphi, but with a shortcoming for some potential readers:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Very well laid out and explained. The high price is probably because delphi 5 is included.4-0 out of 5 stars East US

4-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start
This book is an excellent place to start creating Delphi components. If you are new to component creation (like I was) and need an intelligent place to start, this is the book that will best serve your needs. Some of the material is a bit difficult to understand (due to lack of depth), but careful study of the techniques will prove useful.I would recommend this book to anyonenew or slightly seasoned to component creation, but I must admit that I outgrew it in about 4-5 months. Some of the "meatier" details are not there for advanced component building. For example, I had a difficult time figuring out how to surface the properties of "sub-components."The book makes only a slight reference to the subject and is not very clear about what is happening. As it happens, it is a very simple task, but I wish the book had helped me to better understand it.Overall I liked this book.Itmoved me from being dependent on other programmers' custom components and allowed me to start making Delphi work according to my specific needs

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice level of detail!
Konopka has done a good job of getting into the finer aspects of component development, and provides some useful additions to your VCL component library

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of component creation in general
Good coverage of most beginning to advanced component creation topics. Falls short in discussing advanced data-aware component creation (grids, treeviews, etc.). Does not discuss in depth design time interfaces. Overall, a good reference for component creation. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Work
Material is presented out of order and not readable to anyone who has not already mastered the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie
This book is a fair reference for the intermediate programmer. However, it stops at Delphi 5, so it's use for those using later versions of Delphi will find a lot missing. The book is organized fairly well and it is easy to find answers to questions that are pertinent up through Delphi 5. It does have some tutorial content, but that is limited and for those seeking programming with Delphi education would be better off with other books. This book is best used as a supplement to an instructional book, like the Cantu books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this on my bookshelf
Ray has written an excellent desktop reference for Delphi. I really liked the explanation of the SysUtils unit. I found that there were functions in there that I had written myself, if I had only known I would have saved myself some time. The Language reference with the Tips and Tricks is excellent, helps make more sense of the sometimes archaic online help. My only complaint is that this is the ONLY Delphi book published by O'Reilly, I would love to see a Learning, Programming, or Mastering book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The bar has been raised on advanced Delphi books
Wow.Bucknall has raised the bar on advanced Delphi books. This books coverage of Algorithms and Data Structures is suburb. This book should be required reading for all Delphi developers. No one can call themselves an expert level Delphi developer with out understanding the concepts taught in this book.Bucknall's knowledge of Algorithms and related concepts places him in a category with Knuth & Sedgewick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly very readable, and useable day to day
I still think of myself as being a beginning programmer, although that's not totally true, having messed around for about ten years with CAD macro's and dbase add-ons and turned them into full-blown applications that finally became fairly complex. However, I never had a decent IT training beyond some basics in Fortran and Algol, and know next to nothing about OOP.5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!
This is a book that I've been waiting for for a long time (according to the acknowledgements, Julian has worked on it from April 1999 until February 2001, probably even longer). But it has been worth it, because it's an excellent book about algorithms and data structures implemented in Delphi (and Kylix) - usually version independent. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Having
I had bypassed this book a couple of times while browsing but eventually had a good look at it. Result, I bought it. The tone is light and readable while remaining focussed on some pretty advanced topics. in places I can see hints of a "Son of Lischner" approach but there is not 100% duplication of material making this an honourable second to "Secrets of Delphi 2" Well worth having if you alrady have Lischner's masterpiece. ... Editorial Review

This authoritative and comprehensive title covers the basics of Delphi programming in depth, while demonstrating why Delphi 4 is even more powerful than its predecessors. The text begins with a tour of Delphi 4 basics, including improvements since version 1. After observing object-oriented Pascal programming, including advanced language features, the authors turn to the strengths of using the Visual Component Library (VCL) application frameworks. They include several invaluable sections for corporate developers, including a "coding standards" document. Sections on combining VCL with ActiveX controls round out the basic tour.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book for basics written by unreachable author!
This book covers many very important areas of Delphi programming. Book starts with Main Window class, variables, arrays, etc., covering many Pascal basics, etc, then it covers some API, Messaging basics, DLLs and COM basics (extremely boring examples) on less the 100 pages, the ActiveX on les than only 70 pages, Database development basics again, very basics of Internet programming, and many other like this.3-0 out of 5 stars Please try harder
I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand it does provide alot of material(ActiveX, OpenTools, MIDAS) that doesn't seem to beconcentrated in any single book. On the other hand, the book is not wellthought out, the writing is dreadful, and a good chunk of the material isrehashed from the book that comes with the product.5-0 out of 5 stars The best Delphi book available!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better choice for learning Delphi
I found the book attractive and easy-reading. Marco Cantu boosts Delphi learner's expectations again, with this Mastering Delphi 2005 edition. The author makes learning Delphi a gentle issue, as if he's chating with you personally. Definitely, the book is a better choice for learning Delphi.
3-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient coverage of .NET
I am pretty disappointed by this book as I bought Mastering Delphi 7 by Marco. The .NET topics are hardly covered. Furthermore, the ECO chapter is only introductory. More would have been good. I also do not see much "new" with the book for the topics that have changed from Delphi 7 to Delphi 2005. A lot of chapters have been revised, but it still does not seem as "round" as the book for Delphi 7.

If you're into, or getting into, .NET programming with Delphi, this is a good reference. I am a professional programmer, and Delphi is one of 4 languages I use on a regular basis. I bought this book, and Cantu's book, about two months ago to ease into ASP.NET from 12 years of VCL programming. Both books are very helpful, but my Pacheco book is way more dog-eared than the Cantu book, so that says something right there.

I have the Developers Guide for D2,D4 and D6.D2 Guide was the most imformative.Since then the books have been only for newbies. For someone writing an application, the book doesn't do anything to help resolve a coding problem. The only help I have gotten from it was the usage of bookmarks.I have jumped into it a number of time, but came out everytime with a zero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
As I read through the pages in "Delphi 6 Developers Guide", I simply learned more than I expected (about Delphi 6). It compares with other programming languages, it has a CD included which contains All of the examples used in the book, and it covers everything you can do in Delphi 6. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to become a Delphi expert, read this.

Not having used C++Builder for several years, I was looking forward to reading this one to learn the new bits of v6, and pick up some pointers on BDE while getting there. The book was very frustrating to me.There are some people who can explain topics in an easy-to-follow fashion. The author of this book excels at making topics as complex as possible, using multisyllabic words whenever possible, and just generally trying to appear erudite.Opening the book at random, I came across this sample: "A web application module is typically a TWebAppPageModule object or a TWebAppDataModule object. The TWebAppPageModule component should be used if our application is to generate at least one web page; in other words, our application is of page module type. (p307)"I'm not planning on throwing it away, but it's not a book to keep by the computer. For many topics, I can get more useful information from Borland's on-line help.5-0 out of 5 stars Response to a review dated March 10, 2003
I am the author of this book, and I feel I should write a response to this review made by "A Reader" from NY,NY on March 10, 2003, which, in my opinion, is made without going through the book in detail, or even attempting to use the examples. 2-0 out of 5 stars Stick with Borland's Development Guide
This is not the book to buy on the subject of C++ Builder 6. Save your money on this one and go with Borland's development guide on C++ Builder 6. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars First Impression of Cantu's Delphi 6
I bought this book to learn Delphi.I have no prior experience in it.I am not even 4 pages into the book, and the author is already telling me that he is not going into any details on the basics of Delphi, but instead, is going to focus on enhancements concerning Version 6.He already assumes I am familiar with the Delphi IDE, and if I am not, I can go to his website and get the information I need.I went to his website, and it is more confusing than the book (needless to say, I cant find his "step by step instructions on Delphi IDE).I think this guy needs to jump off of "cloud 9", and step back down into the real world.I want to learn Delphi, not write a thesis on it, or go off on some intellectual space fantasy into the cosmos.I just want to learn Delphi! This book has over 1000 pages, and already assumes you know Delphi!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cantu is overrated
I've read Mastering Delphi 3 and 6 and while Marco Cantu does a good job of exposing Delphi to beginners, his style is VERY lacking when it comes to advanced techniques.I also feel he is somewhat condescending in his explanation of technical matters and assumes that his reader is a near-complete neophyte (well that could also explain the popularity of his books).Still, the website complementing his books does show an effort to make it useful and attractive to his audience.5-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
Just got this book the other day.Not too much of beginners book if you don't know Pascal.Worthwhile though for Delphi though.I'll learn the Pascal as I go along. There are other books for Pascal as well as the authors own website.Great book so far. ... Read more

This title brings the popular three-week tutorial format to aspiring Delphi 4 programmers, combining plenty of hands-on knowledge of the most essential features of Delphi 4, including its strong database capabilities. This book is a good choice for the beginner or intermediate programmer who wants to get a solid foundation in Delphi 4 development in a minimal amount of time. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid Teaching Aid - but be prepared
I purchased this book, without having any background in programming in any computer language, except a small amount of Basic & HTML, hoping for fast results. The truth is that although the book is comprehensive and user friendly, it relys heavily on a pre existing knowledge of the subject matter and is really NOT for the absolute beginner. My only other observation would be the constant "I'll cover that part later" aspect of the text, which is very frustrating, and makes the reader want to skip ahead to consolidate learning. I would certainly recommend this book, but only as an addition to the library of someone who knew a great deal about Delphi first, without which 21 days is optomistic at best!

1-0 out of 5 stars I Definately did not like this book
After reading all the reviews this book had I was very surprise to see how terrible this book is.Make sure not to buy this book I was very very disapointed, it is supposed to be for an intrudoctory level, but this book is way below that, the only person who should by this book is someone who has never used a computer. This is very disapointing considerint other Sam publication. Botom Line DON BUY THIS BOOK

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the title!
An ideal book for anyone who wishes to begin learning Delphi (version 4, 5 or 6). I an experienced Visual Basic programmer and purchased Delphi 5 hoping to use the on-line documentation to learn Delphi but found it too advanced and not an ideal learning environment. (On-line help tends to be a great reference tool but it's always hard to learn from.) I then purchased the Delphi Developers Guide, which seems to be regarded as the best book on the subject. Although a superb book in its own right, its not aimed at beginners. I have now completed the Sams Delphi 4 in 21 days, and let me say, its a terrific book for beginners, which teaches in a lesson format, which is actually surprisingly easy and fun to follow. Dont be put off by the Version 4 title either, all the lessons work just fine in Delphi 5. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A great project that wasn't finished
I have spent a lot of time studying this book. The early chapters are the best. The book needs work. It has a lot of valuable information, especially for a programming student who does not have much database experience. Unfortunately, it has a few glaring errors and omissions. The book has graphics that are labeled wrong. It refers to files on the accompanying CD that do not exist. I couldn't find an errata page on the Internet for the book.If the book were taken through a very serious editing process and re-published as a second edition, I might buy the new version.1-0 out of 5 stars Text Is Slow, Sparse, Introductory; Save Your Money
If you do not know database, or you need a very slow introduction to both databases and how to use them in Delphi, this may be the book for you.The book touts itself as Advanced on its back cover level rating.I don't know what marketing manager came up with Advanced, but this book is not even Intermediate -- it is Introductory.Do you know relational databse design?Well, the table of contents divides this book into three parts, and Part One is relational database design. If you already know the basics, this is just a rehash of everything you already know.None of the examples in parts two and three could be called Advanced -- they are Introductory. This is a book for beginners. The only thing that might be a redeeming quality of this book is that the Appendix has an exhaustive list of BDE API calls, but if you don't need this text (sans examples, etc.), this book won't do you any good.I was very disappointed.CONCLUSION: LOOK ELSEWHERE.

4-0 out of 5 stars I found it useful
This book is probably not for the advanced Delphi programmer as it states, but I found it useful.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Delphi for programmers.
The author covers development in Delphi from the fundamentals of Object Oriented Programming to some of the "hidden" and undocumented features of Delphi. Not exactly a reference, but a cover-to-cover overall conceptual tome (1503 pages!)You will be knowledgeable enough to get into some serious projects with this monster.Even aspects of design and user-proofing are covered, so it's more than just a Delphi book - it's a programming book with Delphi as the development tool. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not very detailed
Often confusing, and leaving important details for later, this book got confusing enough that I had to eventually put it down.It does assume that you do have some programming experience in another language and thusly doesnot go into the basic programming theories which programmers already know. ...
