2-0 out of 5 stars Get Subcription to Siggraph Instead
Except for the chapters on raster algorithms, this book is just an extended bibliography. It has no material on texturing, for example, just a reference to the original paper on it. The math isn't that mature either, and the chapter on Perspective Projections is a pedagogical atrocity. Instead of buying this book, just go to your local univ. library and xerox the bibliography; then, lookup the articles on topics you're interested in.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
This book is a great book for general knowledge but all of the chapters that deal with talking about hardware is badly outdated. I got this book mostly for algorithms. I got much more then what I expected but most of everything I needed was there. Its a very good book for learning about line drawing, and polygon rasteration algorithms. Don't expect anything up to date like shaders though.

It's an all-time classic in computer graphics world. I bought this in 1997 and i could learn a lot from it. Though it hasn't been updated, one can gain all the fundamentals about CG. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!
This year I decided to brush-up on my programming skills. I purchased a copy of visual C++ and a couple of books on C++ programing. After a few days of dealing with cat and dog objects I was bored. Then I came upon this book - with its fast pace and easy to understand examples my interest was regenerated. It takes you from "Hello World" to programming using windows with graphics in about 200 pages (a third of the way through the book) or in time, just a coupe of days!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, well written
Although at this late date the book is quite dated, the material is well presented and well written. The presentation of graphics formats is very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Illustrates well the concepts, but code is inter-dependent.
In theory this is a good book.It gives better than average explanations of the various graphic formats. However, the source code modules are antiquated (dated) and quite inter-dependent as well as X86 platform dependent. Many of the dependencymodules are indeed, assembly modules. This renders the book all but useless for the programmer who needs a quick, plug in typesolution ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great buy to get you started scripting
Good book. The only book I know of that explains everything in a way that's easily understood, especially if you don't have any programming experience. This book isn't the only book you'd need to get proficient at programming, but it definately is the first one you should buy to get yourself started.
3-0 out of 5 stars Average
Covers very basic material- most of which could be read from the Maya API help anyway. What I was expecting was a book written in the "Game programming GEMS" style, where multiple case studies are taken up and solved using MEL (as in Stripnis's book) or MAYA API. What we get is some simple examples, better resources can be found on the web. The API section is written better than the MEL section. This opinion is from a programmers standpoint, artists impression may differ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
If your just starting out with Maya, this book is essential reading.Chapter 2 (which describes how Maya actually works) is worth the price of the whole book. The only reason I think Maya is the best choice for an animation package is its scriptability and extensibility via MEL.If you paid hard earned money to buy Maya, you need MEL to get your moneys worth. This book has already paid for itself multiple times, and Im only half way through it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Graphics Theory
I bought this book long ago and I have used it more than any other book I own. This book covers the basics of graphics theory. The book assumes some mathematical knowledge (linear algebra), but provides a solid review in the appendix.Beginning graphics student often worry about the technical details of their particular platform (how to put a pixel), and this book doesn't cover those issues; you'll need an OpenGL guide and a C book for that.Hearn and Baker write far more lucid prose than most academics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Concepts need more explanation
The book is very accurate but tries to explain everything mathematically. First you need to make clear what you need to do and then things can be formalized to equations. But in this book you give the equations a run with your own imaginary numbers and than you understand the concept. If you are willing to work out things on paper with your imagination and the details given in the book you will understand the book but that is very time consuming and of course after all that you will not give the book its due credit. 4-0 out of 5 stars Needed more C code
The 3-D concepts aren't explained well. And yes, C code's sure lacking. I will give it 4 stars, because of the good explanations that accompany the 2-D chapters. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you have the turbo c compiler.
In a summary, this is one book you will not regret buying. By the last chapter you will be amazed at how good the turbo c compiler was. The only con for this is that if you are lazy or too excited to see the workings of the CAD program there is no disk included for the book and it does have some long listings. They are very well worth typing. The chapter on 3d grahics is very helpful and informative and can be easily converted to other recent programming languages like java.Yes it does cover antiquated BGI graphics but if you are fortunate to have the turbo c compiler this book will show you how to really apply your knowledge. BTW the older borland compilers are a free download from Borland's site.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the moment it was published.
If you are a C developer who want to learn about graphic library, so it's the book. The bad thing is that it's not updated what I think it should and so it's a little arcaic.3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
The book itself is ok, it is the bad checking of code that concerns me.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for scientific C++
Despite its title, this book makes a great introduction to C++ for scientists and engineers who routinely deal with advanced mathematics. Development of the matrix and vector classes are a highlight of the book. As noted in other reviews, the author can take a basic idea for a class and embellish it, adding features and alternative implementations as he goes. At first this is disconcerting, but for readers desiring an in-depth look at various aspects of C++ user-defined classes, it is invaluable.1-0 out of 5 stars This is a bad introductory C++ book
This is a bad introductory C++ book. It does NOT have much3-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it for the graphics
The book is very good for learning C++. One drawback though is that he bases many examples on earlier examples. That way it's hard to grab the book and open it up in the middle. Don't expect to learn much aboutgraphics and absolutely don't buy the book for it. I haven't yet been ableto understand that chapter. He introduce windows programming for thegraphics without laying much of a foundation behind it.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good wide range, but spread too thin.
Well, there's my opinion in the title. This book covers a lot of different things from dialog boxes to sprites to 3d rendering. However, beware, if you are a beginner, you WILL need more than this. It covers dialog boxes in less than one page. It gives maybe one example program per major concept and just describes the rest. This book gives you a good basic understanding of the Windows programming environment. However, if you think you can just sit down on a Saturday, start typing up the source, and get it to run, think again. It may just be my horrible typing or my compiler, but I had some major problems with the examples used here and eventually had to borrow a larger one with more examples from a friend. Again, its a great overview, but it won't help if you have little idea what you are doing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative but not for the novice
This is a very well written book on designing yourown graphics applications for Windows, no matter what type of application you are wanting to do. Mark Walmsley goes into good detail about designing manydifferent types of applications from simple display program to advancedsubjects such as 3D modeling. Mr. Walmsley address many common errors andpitfalls with the included examples. The only downside to this book is thatyou must have a good working knowledge of C++ and Windows to be able tofully understand all of the concepts he describes. Being a relativly newperson to C++ I found on many occasions having to look through many otherresources to understand some items that the book takes for granted that youshould already know.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference but coding techniques lack.
I found this book to be slightly less than useful when I began graphics programming. Some of the programming techniques employed are not very good. for instance, instead of scan-line converting a polygon (fast) to fill inpolygons, he uses a flood fill (SLOW)2-0 out of 5 stars Out Of Date
This book is out of date because it deals with VESA cards not PCIcards. Also, It uses a very slow method in programming the high resolutionmodes. There is no explanation for the code written in the book. Theprograms in the CD involved doesn't work well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing. Not recommended.
This book is out-dated, and irrelevant to modern-day graphics programming techniques. Furthermore, the title is mis-leading as the contents are primarily C-based rather than C++. The reader is extremely disappointed with this selection, and would urge programmers to look elsewhere for graphics programming information. ... Read more

This is a good book. Not the best I've ever read in regards to graphics in C, but when it comes to basic graphing functions in C, this book covers all the topics well.It accomplishes it's goal by builing an include library step by step.Ultimately, the library of functions that are built can increase the size of any programmers bag of tricks.Probably the best thing about this book is that it assumes NO previous graphics knowledge. The first chapters cover the basics needed such as raster and vector graphics, and how colors are built and displayed on a monitor ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
This book is a short introduction of how the programming language C++ can be used to solve various problems in computational geometry. It is modest in its goals, and concentrates mostly on typical "bread-and-butter" topics that would be encountered by someone first encountering the field of computational and discrete geometry. Specialized topics in computational geometry and more modern techniques can then be found in the literature for interested readers who need a more comprehensive treatment.
