5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This is an excellent book. I had the book for a long time already, but only started yesterday. I used to find it complicated. A few days ago I had a plan for a program, but I just didn't have knowledge of the right language, which is C++.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners.
I have had this book for several years and am just now using it to learn C++.The book has an unusual style in that it repeats itself adding slightly new increments as it goes along. This is great for a beginner or an intermediate programmer with some bad habits. It would drive an expert crazy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Intermediate C++
Started out with this book to improve my BrainBench score beyond 3. It really helped to improve my fundamentals which you may not get in the classroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars learn how to use patterns with Qt
The authors teach two things. The use of design patterns in C++. And how to integrate these with the Qt widget package, when you are writing applications that need a GUI. Several of the chapters show that even if you are not writing a GUI, you can still use the Qt framework. Within this, various patterns are taught.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
The layout and design make for easy reading. The book makes heavy usage of examples ... downloadable from the Internet; this is especially beneficial since it's easier to learn abstract concepts through examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book to buy if you want to learn C
The book has a great structure, there is 21 chapters/days total about C and an extra 7 chapters about other languages basic beyond C; Java, C#, and C++. There are however many defects to this book, there are many typos that I was able to spot, and there are no answers to some of the questions. I really enjoyed doing the Bug Busters section at the end of the chapters and would like to see more in the next editions of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for an intro book
Sams C++ in 21 Days is OK at best but lacks depth on covered subjects & does not cover some at all.Linked lists & binary trees were covered in three paragraphs and a small picture.Good for beginning to learn C++ but that where it stops.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Want to Learn C, Look No Further

this is a great book if you wanna learn c++ or game programming. it gets you started in both areas. it explains everything very well and teaches you how to write ms-dos batch files and stuff like that to go with your cpp applications. also the disk comes with a good IDE Dev-C++. Great Buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beginning C++ Programming -- With game examples
As mentioned earlier, this book is more like an introduction to c++ than it is an introduction to game programmnig for people already knowing c++.

1-0 out of 5 stars Teaches "Roberts," not C
This book is annoying with the way the author asks the user to write programs using his custom library functions, as opposed to the standard C commands.Because of this, I did not learn about scanf until probably the 7th or 8th week of the C programming course I was in.I feel like that alone warrants a 1-star rating. If you buy this book, you will be learning to program in "Roberts," not C.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two great books
I have read and worked through both of Eric Roberts books on C.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Art and Science of C
I thought this was a wonderful beginners book. It gave me the basics and then allowed me to go on and try new things by myself. By the end I really felt like I could write my own programs in C.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, but examples can be rather bland...
I've always been rather hesitant to read programming books with titles that imply a sacrifice of depth for gained ease in learning, but this book is a very well done and complete treatment of the fundamentals of the C++ language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Good Programming Book
This is one of the rare books, one of the few that I would actually recommend to anyone that is moving into C++ or needs a refresher on the ideas and methods behind programming in C++.You just can't go wrong buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching C++ using a strategy that works
The title of the book is an apt description of the approach taken by Eckel as he steps through the basic features of C++ and object-oriented programming. Rather than show how programs are written in C++, he presents the sequence of ideas that led to the structures and some of the ways they are implemented. This approach is very similar to the one I adopted after my first few years of teaching C++.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and complete
This is the best C++ book that I own. There are some concepts in C++ I never fully understood until I read this book. The author covers important details regarding the compiler. He also uses an effective technique to decribe complex C++ concepts by solving a problem in both C and C++. Understanding C++ at this level will help readers troubleshoot/understand their problems more effectively. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good, concise algorithm book ruined by comment
compare to most algorithm/data structure books out there, this book is not as complete as those, but it's much easier to read, and diagrams in this book is well drawn and much eaiser to follow. Why would I only give it 3 stars? One thing really ruined this book - obviously the publisher/editor/author try to increase the total page number by putting ridiculously big comment block in sample code(single line comments takes about 5 lines, all surrounded by '*' and spaces) This made the sample code difficult to read, imagine a 5 line function has to be printed in 2 or 3 pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but HORRIBLE CODING STYLE!!!
The book contents is good, the algorithms presented are more or less well explained and the implementeations themselves are not bad (but could be better).
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money
To be fair and honest, I have not read this entire book and that is because I've read far better ones.If you are interested in this topic (and if you're a programmer or computer scientist, you should be), look to Robert Sedgewick's excellent "Algorithms in C" in two volumes, or "Mastering Algoritms" by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein. While the algorithms in Cormen, etc.'s book are not in C, they are in a pseudo language that easy to convert to C.I'm really, really glad I looked this book over before flushing my (limited) money away. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars worthless

4-0 out of 5 stars The introduction that you have been waiting for.
If you've been programming in C++ over the last few years, you've probably heard of the Boost set of libraries. These libraries extend and augment the C++ standard library based on years of real-world experience. Now that some of the Boost libraries have been accepted into the Technical Report 1 for inclusion in the C++ standard, no one can afford to ignore them any longer.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you're not using Boost, you're not getting the most out of C++.
All professional C++ programmers should become familiar with this freely available source of high quality, peer reviewed C++ code.Boost is a collection of libraries that are designed to complement the C++ Standard Library and provide very useful solutions to difficult program design tasks. This book is a very good introduction to Boost. There is an introductory chapter that gives a brief description of each Boost library (almost 60 of them as of version 1.32).Seven of these libraries have been accepted for the upcoming C++ Standard Library Technical Report which means that they will probably become part of the next version of the C++ standard. The remainder of the book gives a more in-depth tutorial introduction of a good sampling of 12 Boost libraries. This material complements the documentation on the Boost.org web site.It provides clear examples that illustrate the use and usefulness of each library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for any network programmer
This is an excellent reading for any network programmer. More than ACE itself the concepts covered are of a great value. I am a beginner to intermediate network programmer, but an experienced programmer otherwise, and found this to be an extremely valuable resource in terms tackling large application frameworks from the ground up. The concepts are precise upto the point but extremely easy to read and digest. Of course, the book is assuming that you know quite a bit of every thing else that is not covered here. There are quite a bit of things that are totally missing or not correct based on the OS and the advances in Posix threading. Nevertheless this is an excellent source for any network programmer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
I discovered ACE almost two years ago after a coworker told me about it.As a developer in the networking / streaming media / distributed computing space, i've all too often run into the problems that are inherent in developing this sort of software -- scalability, maintainability, not to mention all of those bugs ...5-0 out of 5 stars Good ACE overview
I have been trying to learn ACE for the past few months now.Their docs are not that great.I ran C++ doc generator on the API's and that helped alot. The book really closed the deal for me.I work with many customers that are just begining to use ACE and I recomended this book to them as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best introductory programming book written!
Who ever thought that learning C for non-programmers/minimal programmers could be fun or that the C language is a great language for people to start off on? Apparently Gregg Perry did and boy was he right on the money. This book takes a non-technical person who has never programmed before, or a semi-technical person who has minimal programming experience and turns them into a C programmer in a matter of days and gives them a wonderful time doing it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
Just emphasising the other positive reviews!! This is a great book to learn from. I've read alot of bland dry computing books on various topics but this book is the best I've read yet and learnt from. I thought so highly of this book that I even got off my [...] to write my first review!
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute best book to start with!!!!
This book is amazing... I have quite a few "C from the beginning" type books, they all just jumop in and assume you know this and that. This book starts from the VERY beginning, allowing you to have a 'From the ground up' education of C. I fully recommend this book over all others to a beginner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good explanations, many errors.
I would agree with what most people have said. I would like to caution people however that there are many errors. If you are a complete noob to programming you may not catch these. This will slow down your learning and may frustrate you enough to quite. I would recommend 'Beginning C++ Game Programming' over this book. However, I do think that this book is great because the explanations are quick and concise. Used with another resource this book is great.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentally flawed as a package

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but outdated
This book was the most useful, informative, easiest, greatest reference for learning C++ in the world until it got into the chapters on directX programming. The book used directX7 while the world has moved on to DirectX 9 (and in the very near future DirectX 10).

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
This is heavily focused on C programming in the Windows environment. The information is decent, but if you want to use Unix or Linux, etc., you will need something else to supplement.

3-0 out of 5 stars blurry screen captures
If you have never programmed before, then this gentle introduction to C might be suitable for you. It explains the syntax. And how to code in a procedural, top-down manner. It also points out the advantages of designing for code reusability. Something that is probably not high on the awareness of a new programmer.
3-0 out of 5 stars Short doesn't mean sweet
I hope Vine has written a more comprehensive introductory C book. This book is clear, well-written, and can even be used as reference for common C functions. However, its short length necessitates cutting out the more advanced features of C (and more complex code examples) that longer introductory C programs introduce. I suspect that this book competes less in a market for C learners, than the those learners who want to pick up a new language with less time and effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than The Teacher
I had a pretty ambiguous and boring teacher for the course that required this book so I didn't listen to her much at all in class. Instead, I just substituted the book for her lectures, and I aced the course with ease learning much about how a computer works along the way. It makes me feel a lot more competent about programming to know this stuff, and the book provides it in a pretty good way through the LC-3 architecture and sprinkles the book with examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Intro to CS the way it should be done
This book is the implementation of what I have been trying to impart to my beginning students for years. It contains explanations of all of the ideas that make up the foundation of computer science. The first sections deal with the fundamentals of binary data, how numbers are represented, how arithmetic is performed, how the bitwise operations are executed, followed by the basics of digital logic. These ideas are then expanded into a simple assembly code with many control instructions. Staying at the assembly level, I/O operations, subroutines and stacks are demonstrated.
3-0 out of 5 stars Contrary to Popular Review
This book was required for a lower level electrical engineering course. The main complaint I would have is that I found many sections of this book rather convoluted. It simply did not come across as clear as it could be.

4-0 out of 5 stars OOP++
This book made me understand Object Oriented Programing and it's power. Finally.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good introduction to Visual C++
For those who have had exposure to C++ but are not experts, and who need to learn Visual C++, this book would be a good choice. The book emphasizes the Microsoft Foundation Classes, since it is a Microsoft Press book, and the author includes more background material in C++ for those who need it. But lest the reader get bogged down in the intricacies of C++ , the author includes an introduction to Visual C++ in the first chapter of the book. It is assumed, naturally, that the reader will be in front of a computer with Visual Studio open while reading the book, and inputing code or navigating in it as the author requests in the book. Readers who intend to program business applications in C++will find the book very useful. At the present time, scientific programming in C++ is on the rise, and even though Visual C++ and its GUI environment may be overkill for these applications, this situation is changing, especially in areas such as computational biology and financial engineering. Readers in these fields are frequently faced with creating GUI environments for their applications, and so Visual C++ can be of help in this regard. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Starter VC++ Book
I have really liked the way the author Chuck Sphar actually goes about creating the MyDraw Application right from scratch. The first 200 pages of the book teach C++, and the other 500 teach VC++, concentrating on MFC. A real good book to buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to start VC++
I think this book this great for C++ beginners or VC++ beginners. It guide you step by step to grasp the basic idea of VC++. You can be a good programmer after finish this set of book. It's not as simple as learning VB, but it very powerful. But this book does not include some advanced concept of C++ and VC++. To learn more about dynamic binding, exception handling, STL or how to generate DLL, how to use ODBC, you need another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarity - Simplicity - Brilliance
In general most college textbooks are average to mediocre, but this one should be the template or standard in how to write a brilliant textbook. If this is required by your instructor for a C++ course, you won't need the instructor. Lafore understands the 'divide and conquer' concept of teaching better than any author I have ever read. C++ is the Mt Everest of computer languages. Robert Lafore reduces it to a walk in the park. I highly recommend it!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book For beginners
This book clearly explains about object oriented concepts & C++. The features of C++ have explained so well with greater detail. It creates interest to Learn C++. I read 4-5 books of C++ including The C++ Programming Language( Bjarne Stroustrup, Good for reference only).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Intro to C++
I learned C++ from one of Robert Lafore's earlier books and I must saythat this tops even that book. I've read about 5 books on the C++ languagenow and I've skimmed through about 20 more. This book is by far and away myfavorite. First of all, he introduces objects in chapter 1, and you arewriting object code from day 1. Many other books teach objects as anafterthought and teach nothing about thinking and coding in OOP. This bookmakes the user think in OOP, and the examples lend themselves well to theparadigm to get the reader thinking on the right track.
