5-0 out of 5 stars Challenge what you know about OOA/D
I have been studying the object oriented methodology for some time now. I felt that I had a good understanding of what OOP was all about. I have studied OOA/D and design patterns from numerous sources. All of my sense for OOA/D knowledge changed completely when I read this book. This book really showed me that I was stuck somewhere in the middle of the paradigm shift between action oriented programming (aka procedural programming) and object oriented programming. After reading this, I feel like my knowledge in OOA/D has truly advanced to the next level.
5-0 out of 5 stars I've been searching for good books on design patterns...
I have plenty of books on patterns, but I want to get more information on the basics of OOP and why the patterns are effective instead of "this is pattern X, and this what it does." This is a very complicated subject, which I have no doubt that most programmers on the planet have very little understanding of. We mostly write crummy code that "works", and most of the time that's good enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for programmers, designers, architects
The book gives you succinct, simple, common sense(which is really uncommon) guidelines on OO design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and accurate guide to Inventor 10
This book is a combination reference and how-to manual for Inventor 10. The book is helpful for both the novice and the power-user who wishes to understand the new features of this version of the software. Although some of the material in the book is also in Inventor's help and tutorial system, there is also some helpful original material on advanced modeling techniques as well as basic sketching and modeling. The book makes generous and appropriate use of screen captures to aid in the understanding of the concepts presented. The tutorials are presented in clear numbered steps and there are exercises along the way to test your understanding of techniques and commands. These exercises appear to be helpful, complete, and accurate. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Inventor 10. The table of contents is as follows:
5-0 out of 5 stars Inventor for beginners - still in the beginning of the book
I've just bought the book and have started learning Inventor 10. I started on page 1 and went on and so far it's been a great book for a person not knowing anything about Inventor. It's very educational correct, at least what I think. If this keeps up it will be a great book, so far I'm in chapter 3.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the "Essentials", and some of the "Plus"
Still the best book out there for whoever is serious about learning the essentials of Autodesk Inventor 10, the basics are well covered in detail, the examples and tutorials are to the point, and the effort is honest and impressive, the "Plus" part however, could have been expanded further, Inventor 10 has a lot of new advanced features that are of great value to the engineers and designers, hopefully the authors will get together and complete their excellent work by issuing an "Advanced" book. ... I bought the Mastering AutoCAD 2000 edition of this book few years ago and learned AutoCAD from scratch. This latest edition has continue to become a very good reference both for starter and intermediate user like me. Nevertheless there are few things that can be improved:

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard Fun!
I will be brief. That's the way you feel when you're engaged in an eLearning Simulation Game. You get swept up in it. You're turned on. You block out life's static in order to reach your goal. Clark's book is like that. BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I've known and worked with Clark Quinn for several years. He's written a very good book. Like the e-learning it advocates, Engaging Learning is fun, accessible and, well, engaging. Working from a solid theoretical framework, Clark explains why learning should be "hard fun" and then shows how to create that kind of e-learning. He includes several detailed case studies. As someone who develops e-learning for a living, I appreciated his pragmatic approach and acknowledgement that e-learning can be developed at different levels of engagement, depending on budget, schedule, quality of source material, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Crash Course on Web-Based Training
If you are new to web-based training, stepping into a new web-based instructional design position, have been teaching or developing web-based training but suspect that there is a better way to do it, or you simply want to establish a solid foundation in building engaging online learning envrionments, this book must be on your shelf.I am a higher education instructional design consultant and I find this book to be an excellent ongoing resource. Not only is it full of specific and practical tips, but the content is organized into dozens of useful tables and charts.Chapter 6, "Activate Learning" is an especially useful chapter, providing lists of potential learning activities and explaining some of the reasons to choose one learning activity over another.
3-0 out of 5 stars Long on tips. Weak on theory.
This book contains a collection of web design tips which are in the main useful but not earth shattering.Where the book fell down, for me at least, was in the area of theory. It is weak here, and that can be a major problem if you want to conduct a scientific evaluation of the work using the umpteen heuristics suggested by the author.I doubt that there is enough information in the text to adequately help one frame an evaluation of a course, let alone put one together.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent e-learning overview

Editorial Review

The command line isn't dead--far from it. Administrators of big Windows NT networks know that the best way to accomplish a difficult task frequently involves using the console interface rather than the graphical user interface. By writing batch routines, it's relatively easy to perform fancy tasks on local computers and distant ones. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overview of the Windows Command Shell available
Although this book was authored in 1998, it is still as relavent today with Windows Server 2003 as it was when Windows NT 4.0 was first released. The fact is that the Command Shell hasn't changed all that much over the years and Timothy Hill's book remains the best guide to using and writing command scripts that I could ever recommend. And with Windows Server 2003's push to be able to do everything from the command line that one can do from the GUI, it's even more important to fully understand how the Windows Command Shell works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Great book on NT shell commands that Microsoft doesn't even document. Not even "command /?" gives you any help.5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this. Now we need a 2nd edition.
If you have a bit of programming experience, this book together with access to the NT Resource Kit tools will provide you with the foundation for doing almost anything you could imagine within Windows NT Shell Scripting.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ProE Introduction
I am a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of New Hampshire. I used this book to introduce a Freshman level design course to the use of Pro/Engineer. I selected this one based on its thoughtful step-by-step approach. Toogood also keeps his book up to date with a new edition for each new release of ProE.The reaction from the students in the class is generally positive and they are able to progress through the ten lessons at the rate of about one per week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computer-Integrated Manufacturing
Many manufacturing technology professors feel unsure about the nature and teaching computer integrated manufacturing (CIM)in their program.James A. Rehg and Henry W. Kraebber are dynamic authors, as they present CIM as atechnical and strategic function of an organization. They offer a technical and management-based approach for understanding and implementing CIM in the "world class manufacturing" settings. Unlike other CIM books,Computer Integrated Manufacturing is written from the manufacturing technology professor's point of view with technical expertise. The CIMmodel used is consistent with the SME Manufacturing Enterprise Wheel developed by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. This books explains the fundamental principles as well as practical applications of computer integratedmanufacturing in a clear and effective manner and the illustrations and complement the text well.

Follow the instructions and you will be able to navigate through Auto Cad in no time at all. Easy to understand, well written and illustrated for the first time Cad user. Excellent reference manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book For Beginners
As the title says, No Experience Required. I tried several AutoCAD books including the"Dummies" series and it seems they all assume that the reader has some basic knowledge of AutoCAD. Frey assumes nothing and teaches by example, which to me is the best way to learn. Start with this book, learn a chapter a day, and in a couple of weeksyou'll have a good working knowledge of AutoCAD. Then you can pick up some of the other books and go from there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Book For Solid Works
I'm a mechanical design engineer with over 20 years experience using CAD systems such as Unigraphics II, Pro Engineer, AutoCAD and SolidWorks. If you're like me, you've become frustrated by a lack of good reference books for advanced CAD programs. For example, the only good reference books I've found for Pro Engineer are the books handed out to users when they take the official classes. There are plenty of books for beginners, but not for the advanced user. And for SolidWorks, I've found only one independently published book complete enough to be considered a reference manual. It's "Inside Solidworks" by David Murray. This book is not as complete as I would like it to be.But, it is very good. And, it is so much better than the others I've given it 5 stars. If you wish to learn the basics of SolidWorks, I recommend you take the tutorials built into the software. Then, use this book to learn more advanced techniques. It is a good catalog of techniques and tricks that I refer to often.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good Reference book
I have learned three CAD systems; AutoCAD, Pro/E, and SW in the past six years.By far, SolidWorks is the easiest and the finest product in my opinion.I have read numerous CAD instructional manuals, books, and taken countless instructional classes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic, readable
This is THE big fat reference book. Every computer application needs one - and this is it for SolidWorks - updated to 2005 & a bit of 2006 (the current version). If you are just learning I recommend Planchard's Engineering Design with SolidWorks first. But if you are already familiar with the territory, Inside SolidWorks will provide the nitty gritty detail for functionality you didn't know existed, often cutting through corporate SolidWorks obfuscation. I'll read a paragraph and think, this guy digs through every detail of a command - like me. I have used the book extensively for years, basing much of the intro class I teach on it, assigned it as the text for my advanced class, and there remains much still to read. The only downside is that as a reference it has few examples. Thank you Thompson for updating it.By the way, the $47 price is below wholesale. ... Read more
