5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
I have been enjoying the breadth and depth of CAD/CAM Applications in Architecture and Design for the past few weeks. This book does an extraordinarily good job at covering not only the current state of the art in CAD/CAM work, but provides a captivating look at the development of various mechanical production solutions dating back from power looms and early machining tools.
5-0 out of 5 stars *THE* Textbook for Digital Builders
I've been waiting for a book like this to come along! Finally a comprehensive report on knowledge of building techniques that exploit digital tools. This textbook will be a required resource for both engineers and designer/architects. Excellent for anyone trying to grasp the creative implications of the new tools.Full of excellent case studies in product development, architectural design and structural engineering that show behind-the-scenes photos and sequential diagrams. In addition to the cutting-edge technologies, this book surveys the more tried and true manufacturing processes too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informatinal guide to IEEE1149.1
Since the mid-1970s, the structural testing of the loaded printed circuit boards (PCBs) has relied very heavily on the use of the so-called in-circuit "bed-of-nails" technique. This method of testing makes use of a fixture containing a bed-of-nails to access individual devices on the board through test lands laid into the copper interconnect, or other convenient contact points. Testing then proceeds in two phases: the power-off tests followed by power-on tests. Power-off tests check the integrity of the physical contact between nail and the on-board access point. They then carry out open and shorts tests based on impedance measurements.Power-on tests apply stimulus to a chosen device on a board, with an accompanying measurement of the response from that device.Other devices that are electrically connected to the device-under-test (DUT) are usually placed into a safe state (a process called "guarding").In this way, the tester is able to check the presence, orientation, and bonding of the DUT in place of the board.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It is good for learning the EAGLE software
It is short and easy to learn the basics of creating schematics, layout, and producing gerber files with the EAGLE software only.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good solid piece of information
This is a very useful book as the author walks the reader through the different steps necessary to build a PCB. The book is focused on a particular software tool although it does not make it less useful. However, it would have been better if the author had used the name of the software package described as part of the title of the book... I would have bought it earlier!
1-0 out of 5 stars A cut and paste of eagle manual
A big portion of this book is literally a cut and paste version of eagle manual and screen snapshots. If you have slightly ECE and chemistry background, you will find this is an almost useless book. I give it one star because this book collected some useful URLs. However, you can always find those links through online search engines. Don't waste your money on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intellectual Piece of Mind
It is a given that people take design for granted. So it is not surprising that many people have adapted to the rich multimedia interfaces they encounter each day. What is surprising however, is that the design community is only now just reacting to this shift and is struggling to cannonize "E-Design".It would seem that the design world is no different from any other sitting monarch reluctant to budge. If you are diving into 'E-Design', then you no doubt have noticed that the traditional design community fears you. This book was written with you in mind.It is the manifesto to the revolution. This collection of wonderful essays comes straight from the cutting edge thinkers in desgin today--some of them professors, who delight in throwing out references to critical theorists such as Foucault and Derrida. This book is long overdue and I am delighted to have found it as it helps to define the importance of E-Design in the future of design.Natalie Zee'swrites, "Digital designers are at the forefront of the industry, those that are helping to define the dicipline, and those that are creating all the innovative interactive experiences...They are Design Technologists."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True O'Reilly Nutshell style... clear, fast, concise!
Thanks goodness for O'Reilly, and thank goodness for this title! O'Reilly's 'Nutshell' series really are the most valuable books on my shelf (I'm a programmer). I have at least 5 others in the Nutshell series, not counting the older ones since upgraded to 2nd or even 3rd editions. So when my dad upgraded his office to AutoCAD 2000, and I had to fiddle with his new machine, and 2000, I quickly discovered how rusty I was! (Haven't used it extensively since r12).This book really is the supreme AutoCAD reference for those who don't want to read 5 pages to get two sentences worth of information. Sick of those 2000 page paper(literally)weights? This one will comfortably tote in a briefcase, or laptop bag - without losing any of the meat within all those other, fatter books. Now my dad loves it as well! He stole my copy, and bought a couple more as gifts. It's worth every dime - and far, far cheaper than those giant tree-killer 'bibles'. (How apt! All those extra words!) Hopefully they'll print a 2nd edition soon, for Acad2002...

5-0 out of 5 stars AutoCAD 200 In A Nutshell
This AutoCAD book contains all of commands and the best practice method. Also it is a flawless desk reference about engineering design. To approach to the solutions are the only thing that keeps this book from being thebestavailable for making design a person for all engineering areas. Allnovelties are explained by the author what are they originally from. Aslong as you have other autoCAD reference books or good notes from your pastexperience, this book is great if your looking for best one to learn allautoCAD titles to you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Georg Omura's AutoCAD books are always the best
-George Omura's books are always the best of the group.I always recommend them to my clients and colleagues. His books are always easy to follow, if a bit too heavy for reading in bed.His added content CD's are a great bonus too.The whole idea is that you should step your way through the examples.Or even better yet, use them as examples to do a real project that you're working on (and getting paid for!).I always snag a copy of Omura's books as soon as they come out wheather I have that new version of ACAD yet or not, I know I'll need it eventually.5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book overall, to learn or to fine tune your skills.
I used this book as a review, as I had not used AutoCAD since its DOS Release (R11) version in about 4 years. It helped me review basic drawing and dimensioning techniques.I found it easy to follow and I was able to pick up the 3-D modeling pretty easy which later helped me in learning AutoDesks Mechanical DeskTop. AutoCAD is not as roboust for Solid Modeling by the way, 3D wire drawings are pretty good though. I also liked the review of AutoLisp and the AutoCAD VBA techniques, I thought that this book to be very comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful teaching aid!
I learned to use AutoCAD 14 confidently using this book and now use it at work daily. This book will give you an unshakable foundation on which you may become productive in AutoCAD>AutoCAD 14 is easier to come by andless of an expence compared to AutoCAD 2000.However, to make the stepfrom 14 to 2000 is a peice of cake.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is helpful for documentation lifecycles
Another classic in need of updating, the 1994 book Managing Your Documentation Projects still provides good information about the basics of managing a technical writing project. It takes you from defining the project to completion, and on into the normally neglected phases of evaluation, and maintenance. This is a great tool for a writer who wants to formalize and add supporting structure to what he already does by instinct, for an experienced writer who is used to working alone and discovers he has no idea how to manage a team, or for anyone who wants to understand the mechanics of a well run team.

2-0 out of 5 stars This would have been an excellent 200-page book!
Joann T. Hackos's book offers some interesting concepts, such as information plan, project plan, and content specifications, to name a few. Her concepts are well hidden under mountains of text that the unfortunate reader has a difficult time finding or understanding her intentions. Her book is information technology-centered, and technical communication has so much to offer other industries, such as oil and gas, healthcare, and financial, regarding project and documentation management. This book is not a good choice for college-level courses.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the Gospel
Joanne Hackos is widely acknowledged as a leading authority on technical publications management, largely because (a) she has some good things to say and (b) her _Managing Your Documentation Projects_ is one of the few books on the topic. This book offers some valuable insights about basic project management, but tries to shoehorn publications project management into a particular software development methodology -- Carnegie-Mellon's Capabilities & Maturity Model. Hackos acknowledges her debt to CMM and warns that trying to implement the model described in this book is tough sledding if the development organization is not using CMM.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Reference for Mental Ray Standalone
The description of this book is not, as another reviewer mentioned, misleading. It doesn't mention 3ds Max, Maya, or Lightwave. The important thing to note here is that Mental Ray is first and foremost a standalone rendering package. The fact that today's major 3D applications import and make accessible a subset of it's functionality seems to be the cause of a lot of confusion. This is not a 3ds Max book, or a Maya book.If you're looking to find out what buttons to push or what steps to take to use certain features of Mental Ray in your favorite 3D package, this book is NOT for you. There's plenty of information floating around for free on the internet that can answer those questions.
2-0 out of 5 stars Rendering with mental ray not for non-programmers
The description of this book is totally misleading. It only discusses how to use mental ray through the running of scripts and programming language. It dicusses absolutely nothing as far as the manner in which mental ray is used in 3ds max.Does not explain mental ray through the use of traditional menus and the render dialogue box in 3ds max.No mention of what good settings are for GI values or lighting values. The entire book centers around entering information manually in script form rather than going through how mental ray works in 3ds max through the render dialogue box.The only reason this book gets 2 stars is that it does have a good glossary of terms.Of course, those terms can be retrieved from the standard 3ds max help menu.I am a very experienced 3ds max user and was simply looking to learn some more advanced features of mental ray, and I was extremely disappointed in the book, especially for $85. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good tutorial of basic control system
This is a really good book that simplified control system for the real world. Most text spend too much time on theory and analysis and end the discussion with a bunch of equations and graphs without explaining how to implement the design. This book covers both analog and digital control, and lets you download a software from the author's web site. This software, ModelQ, lets you play with various parameters so you can see how the system behaves when it is not optimized.5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on modern control systems
