CCNA Study Guide
Very Information Study Guide for the CCNA Certification Examination. Alot of new material since I read the 3rd edition of the same Study Guide.

The best CCNA book for certification.
Although I am a reviewer for Cisco Press, I have found that the Sybex book series is much more understandable for the average person trying to achieve their CCNA certification.I teach the IT Mentor 2 Day CCNA Boot Camp and have used this book for the last 5 years.Over 5,000 of my students have used this book!
Just passed CCNA, I would recommend this book.
I just passed CCNA with 974/1000.I used this book, Cisco Flash Cards and Boson NetSim 6.0.I dont suggest you to use solely this book and expect to pass CCNA.I recommend you to do plenty of hands on labs along with this book.I found that a lot of questions from CCNA exam were from this book, some even word for word (I noticed that from ISDN chapter).Although this book done a great job explaining but I wouldnt have pass the test with this book alone.The there are a lot of drag and drop questions and three heavy weight sims on my test.I hope this help, and remember "Ping" and "show cdp neighbor details" is your best buddy :)Good luck. ... good for training, but seems incomplete
It is a good tool for exam practice, but doesn't seem too useful for practical network mapping, simulation, or planning.There's just too much that's incomplete.Commands are missing including some advanced routing protocol support, there's no support for larger switches, and some of the diagnostics are pretty kludgy.There is a CCNP version of the software that supposedly addresses these, but I haven't tried it.It may seem fairly expensive, but it is still a lot cheaper than buying an assortment of cisco gear to run through the exercises.

Too many mistakes
I read the other reviews on Amazon before purchasing this product.I saw some were good and some were bad.I thought, well, people have different opinions and I may like it.No.There are too many mistakes.Others have commented on VLAN issues with the 2950's.I had the same problem.Any more than 3 vlans and it just wouldn't work.It was very frustrating in that I wasted ALOT of time thinking it my configs at first.Then there is some kind of bug with pings.When you ping from one specific PC to another across your virtual network the entire application shuts down.This will consistently happen so you must remember which PC's you can and can't ping to and from safely and make sure to save everything before every ping.You will put in configurations then 5 minutes later do a "sh run" and they will mysteriously be gone.Or take a network statement out from under OSPF but it just will NOT remove it.Lastly there is the user friendly-ness.I rate this as a zero.It is the most cumbersome application I have ever used.It would have helped had I been able to open the user guide but that did nothing when I clicked on it.I lost many a network because I didn't save the topologies and configs correctly.So I called Boson for help.You have to leave your name and number and they will call back within 48 hours.That was 2 weeks ago.I have not heard from them.

Poor Implementation of ACL's
I sent the company some feedback last week and have heard nothing from them. Product does not apply ACL's properly to interfaces and has problems recording matches to outbound ACL's. Also there are problems with alternate vlans on 2950 switches. Numerous bugs running verion 5.07 with latest patch. Was a very disappointing purchase.

Good Book, Big Inprovement from the 1 edition
Very Good Book. If you didn't know already the CCNA exam is no Joke. You really have to know the concepts and you really need a good book to prepare for it. Cisco is not giving the CCNA Certificate away anymore. They really want you to learn and earn it. I purchase this because I felt the sybex CCNA didn't cover the exam in full detail (Especially the NAT section). This Book is Well Written. The Price wasn't that bad either since it came with 2 Books (Intro&ICND) and a 30min Video CD. You won't be disappointed. A+ ... Read more

Included lab is !@#$!$#@! Shame on Boson!
The books are good, and the tests are closer to anything on the CCNA test, although I did notice some of the simulations were buggy with incorrect answers, but Boson should be slapped HARD for including the hamstrung Router Sim LE version.The help does not work.The web connect interface does not work. 2/3rds of the labs are disabled and the ones that work have 2/3rds of the IOS commands disabled. This is meant to prod you into buying the "Full upgrade", at a cost of well over $150.That is quite lame.In addition, the internet scut on Boson is that the Full version also is very buggy and not worth even half the cost charged.The Cisco Academy in San Jose is very outraged at Boson for its poor quality.Ask anyone there.

Amazing book
It is a great book which covers all topics in order to pass the CCNA exam. You have the router and switch simulator to improve and apply your skills.

You can't be talking about this book!
I checked twice to make sure I was reading reviews of the book I am currently reading(now on Ch 8), because this is an excellent book.Before I begin - one caveat - I have the the Networking Basic, CCNA 1 Companion Guide (cc 2006) not the CCNA 1 & 2 Companion Guide.However, judging by the contents and excerpt it appears that Part I of this book is the same as the book I am reading.
Crappy book
I am teaching a networking course and am using the CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide as the required textbook for the class. I am very surprised that I am presently on Chapter 8 and I am still talking about Ethernet. I know Ethernet is an important subject matter, but it could be reduced to two chapters at best. The book,thus far, is way too technical for the students in my class. Thus, it simply isn't for students who are beginning their journey into networking. For the bang for my buck, I would recommend Todd Lammele's CCNA book, something to the point. The instructor could expand on the important material that the students need to know and the book would stress key points. I am CCNA and CCNP certified with practical experience so I believe I am qualified to know what is needed for students wanting to enter the networking field and like I said, the book has good info, but it is spread so far apart and is too technical for someone with little or no experience. I have talked to the Dean about this book and have recommended that another book be used. Cisco books are usually good for experienced people in the field.

Be warned
Don't buy this book unless your instructor specifically requires it.Terribly written with virtually no sign of editing, it's a struggle to read and, when covering extremely technical issues, virtually incomprehensible.Worse, the content does not exactly match the on-line curriculum, meaning that Cisco on-line tests typically ask questions about topics not covered in the relevant book chapter.Even worse, the answers to the tests in the book don't match the questions being asked.Buy the Sybex CCNA book instead; although it's not written to match the on-line course, it will help clarify networking, and not leave the reader frustrated and feeling cheated.

I give this book a D+
I read the book cover to cover. Usally the book titled for the exam covers what is on the exam but this book does a poor job. Most of the Intro test is Subneting and Cisco commands while the book spends 3 out of 16 chapters on what is really important for the exam. One chapter for Subnetting I cant believe that. Its needs many more examples also for subneting the CD isn't enough. Don't even bother with the two chapters on commands just get your self a lab or Bosons. I just wish I had not wasted my time reading cover to cover. I wish I just got S..bex or some other book sooner I also used a video series. Pasted my exam its not that bad if you are studying the right stuff.

Fantastic Book
This book was fantastic.Absolutely recommend it - used it to pass the full CCNA exam the first time.Also get the ICND book by Wendell Odom as well - the full CCNA exam is better covered by the ICND book.
Networking review
I think that above title more interesting and really useful to get a CCNA cerification.

Pretty much useless
This has to be one of the worst hundred bucks I've ever spent.Thank goodness my employer reimbursed me for it.Things that suck:
No NAT...
Took this test this morning.I went through EVERY lab in this simulator and read through the Sybex book a total of three times before taking my test.I was confident in my answers until I got to the simulation questions.ALL...not one...ALL of my simulations were on NAT.Out of all 11 chapters in this simulator, not one of them went over configuring NAT.Not only was I surprised...I was a little upset because of the money spent to be confident in nothing.I went through the website for the upgrade to RouterSim 4.1 thinking maybe that's what I should have done before I took the test..and that too has NO labs for NAT.
Total rip-off!!
I purchased this product brand new and was only able to use one of the two licenses supportedly available with it.Then I was able to log-on only once and was locked out with an authorization error.I have repeatedly attempted to contact this company, it appears they are not supportive of their product.The one time I did get into the program it seemed to be vague and very simplistic with prompts for upgrade purchases.To avoid an unnecessary headache, save your money and do not buy this product. ... A prefect choise for CCNA exam preparation
CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guide and CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide by Wendell Odom are prefect choise for CCNA exam preparation. Both books are easy to read for non-native English speakers (like me), all concepts are well explained and illustrated with good examples. Books also covers all exam topics, I used only those books for exam preparation and I answered all questions except one.

Recurring problem
I purchased this book set and passed the INTRO exam easily but have failed the ICND exam twice. I found the exam to be much more difficult than the practice questions. The exam gave me 60 minutes and at the end of 50 minutes I still had several questions left. Starting to have doubts as to whether this book was the best source of my study material. ... Read more

Network textbook
This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

Clearify something....5 stars not accurate...
Everyone here critizes<< typos here and there.. lacking this and lacking that... WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND if this book is so bad... remember that next time you write a negative review.. that will help us (the newbies) know where to get this right information....
Disappointingand frustrating
For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads.However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity.In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try.Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm.After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass!My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book.Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam.None of which was covered with enough detail within this book.Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities).In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam.I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam.Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day.Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text).Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again.The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure!All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2). ... There are better CCNA books available
I had to buy this book for a class.The first day of class the instructor commented that he wasn't happy with the book, but that it was too late to change.He was accustom to teaching from an earlier edition which had a broader scope of information. This book is the second of a two part series. The instructor had to explain a lot of details and providehandouts to clarify sections of the book.
Gets the job done, but be ready to work.....
The new split approach to the CCNA coursework, with the INTRO and ICND books, have provided better organization and a modular breakdown to the information. As a recertification candidate who just completed my exams, I can say that these books are a definite improvement over earlier versions such as 640-607.Odom (or other technical editors) have taken the time to present the information in a building block manner that is comprehensible.I won't repeat the longer descriptions of content that are already present in these reviews.
No WAY! This is not even close to the CCNA exam
The CCNA exam has very hard VLSM, EIGRP and OSFP questions, that are not even covered close to the depth needed to pass the ccna exam.

Wrong title
I was looking for CCNA 1 & 2 Companion Guide Revised Third Edition, from that page I clicked on 'used & new' link and oredered what I thought was the same product. It wasn't til it arrived that I received a used version of the previous year's non-revised which is quite a bit different than what I thought I was buying.

I thought it was good
True there are some errors, however, if you are in the class and use this book, the errors are not that profound and shouldn't cause you any confusion.If you are confused because a word is misspelled or there are 4 technical errors throughout the book...you should not be going into the technology field...try a different career path.

I'm not sure about the other reviewers here but I found this book very, very useful.

Perfect for CCNP and Labs
Not only am I a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor, I am one of the official reviewers as listed inside this book.I spent almost a year working with the authors to make sure this book was error free, and full of realistic lab exercises.My students have used this book successfully for over 4 years.
Practically useful, well explained details (Cisco Press pls respond)
The guides were a great learning experience to me with a lot of practically useful well explained details. The following comment I sent a few times to Cisco Press - they invite you to do so at the beginning of the book - to which I never ever got a reply which is a bit disappointing for a publisher of such great books. Users who study these books may check if my findings are right.;-)

I should have read the reviews on Amazon
I, too, found this book to be problematic.Arguably, one of the most challenging concepts to understand and demonstrate on the certification exams is subnet planning.
Too many mistakes, the first one was me buying this book!
Do NOT buy this - you will end up spending time returning it, or worse, having it sit on your shelf because you don't have time to return it and you just wasted a ton of money on this book!

Great book
This lab companion taught me the basics of what is required for the other 3 classes of the CCNA certification.Things such as building a basic Peer-to-peer network, building a basic lan/wan, and also subnetting of class A-C networks.Great book!

Wrong answers on test
I would have rate this one ZERO stars, but there is no selection for that, so it gets ONE star,
OUTDATED QUESTIONS!!!
Plain and simple, some of the question are outdated. I hate having to go through unneccessary questions to study for this exam. It's bad enough that there is a ton of material that I need to know.

Useful but has problems
I used this along with Wendell Odom's CCNA Cert Library (for exam 640-801) and Boson's Netsim to pass the CCNA exam on the first try.This is worth the money as a useful tool to help you drill, but is a little bit dated (lots of questions about Cisco 1950 switches which are no longer on the exam) and is annoyingly produced - not all the tear-out flash card or study pages are actually perforated.

Getting familiar with the router and its commands.
This e-trainer helped me put alot of the router commands that I had only read about to work. I recommend this e-trainer for those who want to get familiar with navigating in a router and for those who need to get familiar with how the routers interact on a network. Stay away!!!!!!
Stay away from this thing! Don't believe the 5 star reviews, they are most likely fake. This product is VERY buggy, lots of problems. Also, it is VERY limited in what you can do, you pretty much have to stick to the few labs, no have no room to "play" and try different configurations without running into trouble or getting errors. Not anywhere worth the $$$ they are asking. Even if it was free,it is a frustrating waste of your valuable time. If you are smart you will not buy this. I would give it 0 stars if I could!

A good tool for learning to configure routers
If you don't happen to have access to a Cisco router (who does?) but do have access to a PC, this tool can simulate about 80% of router configuration prompts, and 100% of the ones that Cisco tests on.Router configuration and routing table organization is roughly half of the CCNA exam, so this can help greatly in preparing for thoses parts of the test. ... As good as you can get for a dry subject
This is one of the better study aids, but as with all study aids it is boring to read.It may just be me, but I hate to read anything like this, but I have to keep my certs.It is up to date with the latest verion of the test and very informative.It will make a great companion to use along side the bigger complete CCNA test prep books and also to use in the field when you need to remember those odd commands.

it is an excellent book for your preparation for the CCNA.it is also very useful for the memorizing the commands that most used in the router confiruation in your job.

Good Resource
This is a good resource to study with for the CCNA.It contains almost all of the commands that should be known for the test, and then some. All I can say is watch out for $9.00 shipping charges if you buy used! Don't "one click shop" it as you will agree to these shipping charges without seeing them like I did. ... Read more

More Than Just an Exam Cram
Although this book is centered on the preparation for the reader to take one ofthe CCNA examinations, it is more than that. In reality this book is an excellent introduction into the whole concept behind routing as conducted 'a la Cisco.' It covers routing in general and then gives an excellent introduction into the Cisco products that handle routing. Since Cisco is the largest provider of routing equipment this book serves as a source of information as to just which Cisco products are best suited for your particular application.

CCNA Command Quick Reference
Simply a must have for anyone learning Cisco internetworking fundamentals. It takes time to muster cisco commands and remembering the key one's, this book really helps in having a reference by your side.
