3-0 out of 5 stars Good, easy to understand, but a complementary book.
I passed BCMSN exam today with the help of this book. This is a good guide for people who has a basic knowledge of switching technics, but for certification purposes, it is missing some topics, other topics are incomplete and let you with doubt.
1-0 out of 5 stars Missing tons of information
DO NOT rely on this book to pass the exam. It lightly touches most of the important subjects, but goes nowhere near deep enough to be useful. I agree is it better written that the BCSI book, but it needs to be much more thourough in its handling of the subject matter. Very poor considering its Cisco.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vast improvement over 2nd edition
Although the BCMSN test is the easiest in the CCNP, this book is worth the upgrade. One of the CCNP books you can actually read.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is way too light for this exam
The methodology of the troubleshooting process is the easy part. This book would have been much better if it had broken down the troubleshooting sections for each layer and given you some concrete ideas about the most common things you might see.Definitely, an extensive treatment of debug output with explanations of what to look for would have been good.Bottom line, read the book so you know the methodology, but get another source because this one won't do it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost no relation to actual exam
Cisco should be embarassed to call this book 'official self-study test preparation'.Perhaps it should say 'Some basic thoughts'...The relation to the exam I just took was nowhere to be found.I think this book prep'd me for 1 or 2 questions out of 64.I'm totally disgusted.CiscoPress has lost all credibility in my mind. This book is a discrace.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for passing CIT exam
To summarize, this book is focused on troubleshooting methodology. It goes over procedures, guidelines, and methods. It is not intended as a specific blow by blow review of troubleshooting technology - you are assumed to already have this information through studying and job experience. The author is straightforward in his writing and does a good job of boiling down the information, and physically it is considerably thinner than the other study guides.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very thin
I bought this based on the previous reviews. The book is very thin in content with about 250 cards per exam in the boook itself. It does not nearly cover the needed information. The CD is better with more flash cards per exam, and a testing engine, but still thin in coverage and explanations. It has information you can use, but not enough. If it was structured toward the exam requrements it would have been better. If you used the other Cisco press books, you don't need this, not even at the discounted price. As a comparison, the CCNA flash cards book was much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
In preparing for the 642-801, I found that there was too much information in the Paquet/Teare book to remember it all. I have no working experience with this exam topic so needed a way to fine tune my understanding.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
Generally a pain to use and work with. The format of the book is bulky and difficult - you have to HOLD it open.As someone else mentioned, it crashed my Palm hard.It also wouldn't run on my desktop PC or my laptop, so the CD was worse than useless - it was a a big waste of time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay to use but not as your only book
This book does cover the material however, it is organized somewhat funny, a little difficult to follow and the IPv6 section is very weak. If you are new to these subjects this book is not for you. It is easier if you have years of hands on experience or have read other books first.I used it as a complement with the Doyle and new Cisco Press CCIE book plus my own lab to pass the BSCI in a couple of weeks. The CD test engine is too easy. One tip to pass the BCSI, practice, practice, practice.
3-0 out of 5 stars it doesnt cover everthing..
I did read this book entire, my practice tests score were average of 98 to 100%, but I did not pass the exam.
4-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
Studying this book finally enabled me to pass the BSCI.Make no mistake though; this is not a great book.It is poorly organized, it is full of errors (even ones not stated in the errata - I can rattle off quite a few) and basically hard to understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book to prop the old desk up!!!!
This book has so many errors, and missed topics its not worth your time purchasing this book.I used the BCRAN Student Guide instead to pass this test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cisco's worst,Editor MIA?
I think, for this title, Cisco put 1000 monkeys in a room with 1000 typewriters for a couple of years and then published the results.Of course they made sure it wasn't Shakespeare first, to avoid those pesky accusations of plagiarism...which seems to be the extent of their editing on this title. The most glaring error is the author's repeated insistence that in public key cryptography one provides their private key to the public so information can be encrypted, then the destination party uses the public key to decrypt the information. WHAT!?!Please, please do not do that! C'mon Cisco...even Microsoft got this one right. At one point later on the author seems to demonstrate the process correctly.I imagine he got encryption confused with digital signatures.Ok, fine, but WHERE WAS THE EDITOR!? There are countless other places in the book where the author contradicts himself, and other places he's just dead wrong.Fortunately I have enough experience to spot some of these, but I'm sure not all, since I am obviously still learning. I don't trust the author enough now to believe that he's telling me the truth. This is the worst Cisco Press book I've gotten ahold of yet. This is the last test I have to take for the CCNP and I imagine I'll pass, but it won't be due to this book.Even the CIT book by Ranjbar was better than this. While his didn't really reflect what's on the exam, at least it was very well written. If you can get your hands on the Student Guide for the BCRAN, use that instead and UniverCD on Cisco's site to polish up the rough spots.Rotsa ruck!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Cisco disappointment
I was extremely disappointed in this text.I have read several Cisco Press books in the past to prepare for certification exams, and have always been reasonably satisfied. Not so here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money!!!
I really wanted to like this book. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent book but after using the Lammle/Sybex book to pass my CCNA this book is a let down. This book, though not intentionally, is two books. The first half is well-written and explains IGRP, EIGRP, and OSPF in an in-depth, easy-to-read fashion. The second half covers BGP and leaves you scratching your head. I don't know if the topic of BGP is so complicated it's hard to put into words, but considering how much of the book covers BGP (3/10)I will have to look elsewhere for more information.3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Exam, Not Good Enough If You're Out to Learn
This book is a good study tool for those of you preparing for the CCNP Routing examination.Although I have a good amount of experience with Cisco routers, which aided my preparation, there were several areas on the exam that I had no, or very limited, experience with. When combined with my previous experience this text, by itself, was sufficient to pass the exam.1-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE WORST CCNP ROUTING BOOK OUT THERE!!!
Exam Cram is a better study guide than this and that is not saying much. This book has approximately 250 pages of useful reading and 200 pages of Fluff. In depth protocols such as OSPF, and BGP are explained in less than 30 Pages. There is almost no way possible for someone to really get an understanding of these topics from this book.Cisco certification is highly regarded in the industry for certifingprofessionals that understand IP routing and this book is not the one to help you.Purchase the Cisco Press Book or Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Vol. 1 and stay away from this one!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad For An Exam Cram
Typically I don't go for Exam Crams as they are the basic needs for an exam passing quest. However I have taken Sean Odom's classes before and he is a great instructor.Read the book, passed the exam with a 913 today.I base my reviews on how good I passed the test and I always seem to pass when I read Sean's books or take his classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I found this to be a very good book.It covered all the needs of the exam.I read the previous posters and am concerned that those leaving reviews really don't know what they are talking about. The fact that the people stated other authors names leads me to believe they are the other authors.Any how,I found this book to cover every question I had on the exam.I passed with a 992.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book sucks! Its a shame there is not a "no stars&q

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and clear
Lot of information, clear explanations of not easy concepts, with pictures and examples.Clearly organised and concise.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, good prep for the test
I had this book, the Sybex book and the Cisco Press books. After seeing the age of the information in the Sybex book I quit using it and used this and the Cisco Press books (practical studies: Switching and the BCMSN study guide).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference

4-0 out of 5 stars Wondering which to buy for your 640-604, Cisco or Sybex?
I passed 640-604 Exam only studying with this book with the score of almost 900.4-0 out of 5 stars HSRP on the test
Outstanding book. Provides everything you need to know to pass the test, except for HSRP. I realized that this was not in the book when I went to take the test. It was a good thing that there were only a few questions on HSRP. Maybe I guessed right, but I did pass the test and that is all that matters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My rating: Good++ or Great-
I purchased this book in 1999, but only find time to read it recently, and thus unfortunately let go of a golden chance of passing CLSC 1.0 exam. This 700+ pages cram is a solid, systematic, and detail presentation of major switching topics - good enough that I carry it around as on-the-job reference, and also using it as an important part of my preparation for Swiching 2.0 exam, partly because (1) most BCMSN book for switching 2.0 exam is still not out (2) I couldn't see too many authors out there that can explain thing as well as Richard Deal's book. I have no complaint of the thick 700+ pages format - in fact I do hope that this book can expand in size and perhaps explain some tricky topics (tricky for guy like me who previously only work with the trickless ethernet hubs) like vtp, stp in a more graphic manner, with perhaps more examples. And perhaps add more examples on how big big switching network is built - like what I see in Kennedy Clarke's book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get Muticast info somewhere else....
The book does a decent job of covering most topics, but stay clear of the muticast section. There is constant confusion about which multicast address is for all hosts 224.0.0.1 and which is for all routers on a subnet 224.0.0.2. The author has switched them in more than one place. There is also one stating that 224.1.1.1 is for all routers on a subnet. It's funny, the Cisco Press book used the address 224.1.1.1 in an example in that same chapter. hmmmmm....strange.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great buy for the information contained
I orginially purchased this book a while ago when I was going for the CCNPv1.I read it from cover to cover and was about to take the test when Idecided to wait a little longer and go for the v2 exam. The informaiton inthis book is great.I have used it several times as a desk reference oncustomer calls. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better. But, a lot of good information.
Don't get me wrong, between ExamCram2, Cisco, and Sybex, this was my favorite book.It is unfortunate that there really is no good one choice for studying for the BCRAN and, though opinions vary, I found it to be the hardest of the three tests I have thus far taken.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
It is truly incredible that a book with this many errors could be published. The chapter on multicasting is a disaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coriolis has a winner with this one.
To become a CCNP you have to take several exams, one of which is the exam 640-504 Switching. Leading the way in certification preparation books is Coriolis and this book should make taking the exam a little easier.1-0 out of 5 stars If details are important, find another book.
the best thing about this book is that it will test how much you really know about Cisco switches. the technique it uses is that it has an endless number of typos and nearly as many inaccuracies. when you read any section regarding the specifics and details of a switch, check Cisco's site to verify. the test will ask some spec driven questions (regarding which switch can do what and would be best suited given these variables) and if you go strickly by this book, you will answer wrongly. if you have already purchased this book, don't let it be your only resource.Read more

The current test is 640-606 which came out in the first of 2002.This book is only been out sense September 20, 2002.Only one review is of the current edition. The old editions are very poor study guides. However, the current editions of the books are more in line with the test.As for the two new exams that I have taken, I found the Sybex as good as if not better than the Cisco.2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this particular Sybex book
I have used Sybex for the routing/switching and remote access exam and passed the respective exams. But this book on the other hand was lacking some of the information on various categories of the official exam.Today I have purchased the official Cisco press book for this exam, which I will likely do for now on in the future. For now I have to pay for this exam AGAIN, this was the first I have failed. Good Luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is excellent for exam review! Keep in mind that this is ONLY a review. In no way is this going to subsitute the full material. I used the Cisco Press books along with this. Perfect combination.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough reference...
And not much else. The author tries to pack too much info into a single book. It did work for Lammle for the CCNA study guide. However, CCNP covers a lot more. For a recap of technologies this book is fine. If you are looking for a deeper coverage of routing protocols however, check out "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton (ISBN 0972286209). That book explains the mechanics of modern routing protocols, such as RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP in great detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a good book for the new exams
I used this book, along with the Todd Lammle CCNP study guides to pass my exams while attending a CCNP boot camp.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Erroneous and badly written, not recommended
BSCI 642-801 is a tough exam and the combination of topics makes it tough to remember everything. This newer Clare Gough book is worse, please do not buy it, get a copy of the CD from someone and practise the questions from the CD.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for the 640-901 Exam
This was a very good book in general. There were some typos.I originally had the Todd Lammle BSCI book but found it did not map to the test objectives very well.My associate had the book and after reviewing it I bought a copy.I used this book, the Cisco BSCN Supplement for IS-IS, Todd Lammle's RouterSim and few resources from the Cisco website to study for the exam.I passed the exam and feel the book sufficiently covered the material on the exam. The 640-901 exam is being replaced by the 642-801 exam. The new exams look like they are focused more on actual configuration and applying concepts rather than the concepts themselves.Good luck in your certification endeavors!

2-0 out of 5 stars They should have paid more attention to detail
This book is another example of a Cisco Press book that was written in a hurry by a group of people that did not communicate nor did they carefully review their material for errors. Some of the router configuration examples are clearly wrong. The attached CD at times does not reflect the written mateial and asks questions that are not covered in the book!As of May 1, 2003, Cisco has announced that the BSCI 640-901 test (This Book!) is being replaced by a new test - BSCI 642-901.Hopefully the author(s) will correct all of their errors in the next edition for the new test.Good luck on you CCNP/DP Certification ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical
This is a great book. This book provides current and practical information to support Cisco routing, and also provides a method to pass the Cisco Routing exam. The book assumes an IOS of version 12.1 for most examples, so if you are using an IOS version prior to this you may need to consider version differences. The book is well organized, and I especially liked the detail given in the book about the Cisco router product line - drawings with configurations were presented for all Cisco routers in production.Good job!5-0 out of 5 stars I like the way this book is written and the way it is format
This book is laid out nicly and is written in an easy to understand format. This book should not be forgotten as it has a lot of important information that can still be shared with readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like it or not, this is best book in town for ACRC exam
I passed ACRC yesterday - and this is my chapter to chapter review of this excellent book:Chapter 1 - didn't read, but gone through the self test question - should be sufficient. Chapter 2 - On IP access-list. Thoroughlyand clearly explained, better than all other exam reference. The systematic"little arrow" approach to creating access list - not seen in ACRC class orany other references. You will want to understand every bit in thischapter. Chapter 3 - On IPX access-list. This chapter is again wellexplained, CNE will enjoy it - but I suspect it over-prepared you for theexam objectives. Chapter 4 - On Appletalk - I would say this chapter isbrilliant in the sense that even a non-Apple guy like me know what he istalking about. It is a 'just right' preparation. Chapter 5 - On queuing-I am a bit lost and have to refer to Sybex's better diagrams and clearerconfiguration example. Chapter 6 - rotten - please re-write. Mean to showyou a bit of DVRP, IP, VLSM etc in preparation for later chapters on OSPF,EIGRP - but somehow lost the plot - why not make it a solid chapter on howto do VLSM in a big international corperate with differerent branchesaround the world, who decide to throw away their old DVSP because ofvarious limitation? Chapter 7 on IGRP and EIGRP - this side by sidecomparison of both routing protocols is useful to illustrate thesuperiority of EIGRP over older DVRP. No other exam references think oftaking this approach since IGRP is not one of the exam objective. Chapter 8OSPF - 80 pages of most solid information clearly explained. 5 stars. Youwant to know it inside out. Chapter 9 - on IPX NLSP - I still not quietsure what is NLSP all about, and its interaction with IPXWAN. Chapter 10 -EIGRP by itself. An OK chapter - but need to enhanced explanation onfeasible successor with good diagrams. Chapter 11 - On BGP - I afraid itover prepare you on this topic - but good to know. Chapter 12-15 on WAN,ISDN, DDR - good solid chapters - but I thing the DDR dialer profileportion needs to be better explained - show us a completed, workingconfiguration example on this. On PRI configuration, I hope the author canre-wirte to show how the PRI config works with BRI config. On ppp, hdlc,frame-relay, they are boring presentation - is there a better way to teachthis subject? Author please re-write the compression topic - use examplesand diagram. On various use of T1/E1, author please tidy up the explanationto leave no room for confusion. Chapter 16 - 18 On bridge. It is explainedclearly - but I did struggle with the concept of CRB, IRB - can author findanother way to smooth the learning curve - perhaps using some diagram?Nothing amazing on transparent bridge - but author probably will want toenlighten us on how 2 ethernets or token rings separate by slow WAN linkcan be bridge together without operational difficulty. Big Big chapterover-preparing you on source route bridge - but I think they should shiftthe SRT and SR/TLB to the front and stuff those RSRB to the very back. Inever work with token ring and in the last 10 years always lost wheneversome authors try explaining the concept of SOURCE-ROUTE to me - this authoruse so many pages of diagram to explain source route - and BINGO, Iunderstand! I did not bother to read the Frame-Relay and DLSw chpaterssince they are not exam objective - but now that the exam is over - I willhit these two chapters. This is the first certification book that I do notintend to throw away after passing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars it is a pity that it's too late to send it back!
Yes, I have passed the exam with the 1st attempt. My thanks to Cisco press and my experience.4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Weak Test
The book was excellent in preparing me for the exam.It was really well written and had excellent detail on the Remote Access Technologies. The practice test was lacking. It really didn't have enough questions, but the accuracy of the question were better than most books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remote access complete.
