A bit of overkill but still a good book to have around.
Working on the transition to Exchange 2000 is a project that I am involved with. I am using the Resource Kit for a lot of planning and deployment ideas. I think that with book as a compliment to this book I will be able to pass the exam.Read more

It's just it!
Actually I am not really fond of the microsoft study guides, to prepare for any exam, but this one just proves me wrong! Just like you can expect on the exam, they describe a case and drill down the do's, don'ts, why and the why not's or the best solution for the specific case.

A real winner of a series!
The first of a 4 book series leading to MCSA/MCSE certification, this is the best training guide I have ever seen.I have taken the Microsoft recommended course, 2274, as well as read several other books and training guides.I am a MCP, using several resources to reach MCDST certification in route to MCSE certification.This book is amazing!The reference section on how the exam is structured is exactly right.The chapters are well laid out, and track the sections of competency Microsoft tests in the 70-290 exam.That makes it very easy to focus your attention on areas where additional study is necessary.The glossary at the end of each section provides additional study opportunities.In addition, the exercises really give a grasp of the materials.Finally, the Fast Facts section at the end of the book is a great exam review tool.This book will stay on my bookshelf long after certification as a tool to help me be a better system administrator.

disppointment
I used this publisher for other tests and did well. I really can't say the same for this book for the 70-290. I have taken the actual test twice and did worse the second time. The second time, the test was 200% harder and longer. Many of the questions were not from any of the material that I read and used. The book says to use their exercises and practice tests but that didn't really help with the second tests at all. I've made a formal complaint to the testing company and to Microsoft but honestly don't think Microsoft cares one way or the other. It's their Certification and they make the rules. Using the FAST FACTS at the end of the book an hour on two before the test will do you absolutely no good at all!!

Very good Book
The book has helpful tips and time management techniques it explain the use of the different parts of the system, at the end of each chapter you will find questions to check your progress and they are similar to the real exam, however you need to use other tools (example - test) to pass the real exam. At the end of the book you get a review of essential exam-related terms and concepts.

Terrible
Common sense tells us that who would know more about a product then it's inventors. Who whould be better to teach us about that product then the inventors. Well Microsoft has not and does not believe in common sense. you rely on this book to pass the test or to know anything pratical about Server 2000 and buddy you're in for a world of hurt. It leaves out significant details and aspects of server 200 that are need for a complete understanding of server 2000. Yes, what little detail and knowledge it prvides are accurate, but they are so few. Old Billy Gates again with a half attempt like everything he does. It seems their idea of common sense is: Well we charge $135 a test and sell the book for $45 and since they'll never pass the test on the first or second try then we'll make a bundle. Save your money and save your time. Buy the Sybex book for preparation for the test.

Good book
I used this book and Measure-up practice tests to prepare for 70-215 Windows 2000 exam. I found the book complete and to the point. I did pass the test. I recommend using this book in combination with such practice tests as Transcender and Measure-up - simply reading the book isn't enough. Make sure you take practice tests and fully understand the problem discussed in each question - why the right answers are right and why the wrong answers are wrong. Some of the Authors were good --- others were not
You could definitely tell when they switched authors. There were two chapters when I could tell the author really didn't know the subject and was merely regurgitating information. I stopped midway through those chapters and skipped onto the next chapter. I later got the info I needed for Certificate Services and High Availability Services from Whitepapers and I also discovered the MS Press book on this test. It was much better. Reading the Sybex book I had very little confidence in the author. Reading the MS Press book I had complete confidence in the author.
Sets you up for a fail.
The book is an easy read, which is good.You'll have an easy time getting through the questions, but when you go to take the test you'll fail.This book is no where a good match for the exam.I suggest this book for people who want to learn about Win2k3 AD, but if you're getting it to prepare for the test you should think twice.Nothing this book discuss could have prepared me for the test.Bummer.

More books needed
This book will teach you the basics. iT does not prepare you for the test. I read the whole book cover to cover and understood it completely. The test is nowhere as easy as this books questions. It does not go into depth with scenerios that can be helpful. I recommend you get the microsoft books for this test. If you are currently working with 2003 it will help alot. but do not plan to only use this book unless you luck up and get the perfectly tailored test to what this books covers. ... Read more

It's the thought that counts...
Michael Chacon, et al give a good attempt to easy your studying for the 70-218, Managing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Environment. However, this edition is riddled with obvious errors. Nearly half of these errors are contributed to poor wording (i.e. When you boot a DHCP client for the first time... listens for a lease offer , and chooses one it likes." page 98 -- DHCP clients cannot choose anything. They accept the first address that they receive. The other half are just errors (i.e. "Even though IIS is built into Windows 2000 Server, it is not installed by default." page 712 -- oh yes it is, and you should be aware of that with all the IIS hacks lately. However, the authors are quick to respond to these errors when brought to their attention and Sybex does a great job of making the corrections available on their website. Overall, the book makes a fine attempt to get you skilled in Windows 2000 network management. My only suggestion would be is not to use this book as your only source.

The standard
THere are a few things I would change with this book, but, like the other Sybex/Chellis/Donald certification books, these are the standard. This MCSA exam covers a wide swath of topics, so take it last. You'll see a lot of overlap. Know group policies. I even saw and active directory question on the exam, and was a bit surprised. The book did a good job preparing me in general.

All you need and more to pass your exam
This book cover everything you should know before attempting to pass the 70-218 exam assuming that you already study and passed the 70-215 exam. It goes beyond the scope of the exam in the area of intra and inter-site active directory replication (at least for the exam that I passed) but it helped me to understand the overall concept. The explanations are simple but effective (not lile the microsoft book).I also used the sybex tcp/ip jumpstart book who is very good at explaining the concept of subnetting. ... Read more

It's the smartest and the fastest way to get certified !
I will suggest this book to everyone who want to pass and study for the exam quickly. I have been reading this book and I found that this book is really easy to read and has a good depth. It is a "to the points" type of book, and doesn't give me too much unnecessary information like normally other book does.

Worth the price regardless...
I used this book and Gunderloy's 70-310 book.This book alone will not help you pass the test, but it is worth the price for 2 whole practice tests and over a 100 chapter-end questions.

Solid Foundation, Needed More
I passed 70-310 by using this book and the Transcender practice tests.For me, the Transcender tests filled in some gaps in the material that this book didn't touch on or didn't touch on in great detail.Read more

This book alone won't help you to pass 70-219
This book taught me how to draw a site, a domain, a domain tree, and a forest.There aren't any new technical material about Active Directory on this book. Best for 70-219
Do not waste your time on this one !! Vague with no sample case studies!
I found the this book very frustrating to read. The way it was written in some parts left you scratching your head, even if you re-read it 3 or 4 times. And I've already passed 70-217, the new concepts weren't explain very clearly, at least not well enough for a novice to Design to grasp. However, the most disappointing aspect of this book was that it didn't even have one practice Case study! I mean getting use to the new MS test format is half the challenge. You can study this book inside out, but on test day, you'll be totally lost. Go with Transcenders or even the Sybex book instead. ... Read more

Technical but still Good!
I found these books to be Good to Excellent.They are fairly technical but they also cover a lot of the details that you can expect to find on the exams.I have passed 5 of 7 MCSE tests using these books and practice questions from Transcenders.These questions are helpful because of the long winded, detailed answers.Also, if you really want to learn networking, try the lab videos at trainsignal, www.trainsignal.com, they pick up where the books and questions leave off.

Not buying
I was going to buy the book, but after discovering that the associated website required me to install Firefox to view it (and how egotisitical and biased is that?), and then didn't format code samples in anything remotely like viewable, plus that most people comment on a lack of code in the book (or that is doesn't work), I think you'd have to be dumb to part with the money for it.

Not what I was looking for
I purchased this book because I wanted to do socket programming.However only 30 pages is devoted to the topic. Threads are not covered as all and I found more information on the web then I found in this book.

This book took me from 0 to 50 on network programming in 1 long day.

Fine - if you're only planning on taking PART of the test!!!
Have always been a fan of ExamCram books but something went very, VERY wrong with this one: not a SINGLE mention of PKI (MS exam objective "Configure Active Directory directory service for certificate publication"). Which just happens to be a HUGE part of the test.
This Book Needs To Be Reviewed
I'm currently working on my MCSE certification.I read the Microsoft Press books for each test, then supplement that with the Exam Cram 2 books.I've taken tests 70-290 and 70-291 and found the Exam Cram 2 books to be very beneficial.However, something happened with the 70-293 book.There are lots of inconsistencies and wrong information.On one page, you'll be reading about an item and what it does...on the following page, it will tell you something completely different.Sometimes there are mis-prints in the exam questions...like having the same answer printed twice in a multiple choice question.Don't get me wrong - if the real test was like that, it would be awesome.Like I said before, the first 2 books of the series were great.This one leaves something to be desired.Glad I bought the PDF version instead of the hardcover...much cheaper.

Perfect book for a last minute review
This book helped me finish a month long study/review for my 70-293 exam. Is it "the" one and only perfect book - no; no final cram book (you name the publishing comapny) ever is; but it is exactly what it is supposed to be - a final review before the exam. I found it rounded out areas from other study sources that I used and helped complement areas that I already had some knowledge in. It's excellent!It's a perfect book for someone like me who got dumped into the position of NetAdmin with very little knowledge of anything server related. I am flying by the seat of my pants and this book is my worthy, knowlegable co-pilot!It has been the one book that has saved our network from certain doom at the hands of a kicking and screaming newbie (no, i didn't want the job, it just fell to me...) Not a good book on IIS : it describes , it does not explain
I bought this book in order to master IIS for my own web site and for those of my clients. blech.can i have my money back?
