3-0 out of 5 stars Cost $28 to buy a manual
1. It is just a manual, not a text book that you want to learn more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superior book on a superior product
When it comes to virtual computers installed on one physical computer nobody does it quite as well as VMWare.Version 5 of their workstation product is a significant improvement over earlier versions with easier installation, better discovery of available hardware, and many other features. While it is easy enough to install a basic system and the software pretty much installs itself the documentation of VMWare has always been lacking. This book fills that void by supplying a superb manual to match the superb software product. The author takes a kind of quick start approach as he goes through installation and upgrading, and then moves straight to creating a virtual machine so you can get working with it right away. From there he moves to some of the more advanced features such as working with snapshots, cloning a virtual machine, and working with teams. This is followed by a section on networking virtual machines, performance tuning, and optimization. He even includes an excellent section on tips and tricks. If you have the need for more than one operating system installed on your computer or just want to work with more than one then virtual machines is the easiest way to go about it.No rebooting and working in just one system at a time like a dual-boot configuration, you just run them both at once and switch back and forth as needed. And it will support more than just two virtual machines running at the same time. The VMWare Workstation 5 Handbook is highly recommended to anyone interested in the VMWare product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book is very well written, easy to read, and covers the subject matter perfectly.Anyone who has at least a little bit of AD experiance and reads this book should have no problems passing the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Dir. Services exam prep so far...
With the the seemingly little selection of quality prep books for the design exams, I wasn't expecting much-- but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. This book covered exactly what it was intended for, not the "how's", but the "why's" you will be expected to know for this exam.Just like the author says, don't take this exam until you have passed the AD implementation first.I found this book clear, concise, VERY accurate, and doesn't take long at all to read the entire book.It has the right combination of what you need to pass, without having to read 1,000 pages. It seems that the Dummies books may now be the best "exam crams" for W2K, judging by reviews for the other Dummies books. Now if they would just hurry up and make the Network Design book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Accurate but not in depth.
This book is accurate with VERY few errors. It covers all the topics required for the exam but not in the depth required to pass the exam. This book is good on installation and configuration issues but weak on the theory behind topics such as WINS and IP ADDRESSING. This being my first MCSE 2000 exam, I failed it the first time around. A lot of question that came out weren't covered in the book. This book should be complemented with another book. I read Mark Minasi's Windows 2000 server(Fantastic book, I give it a triple 5 star rating). I passed the exam second time around. A WORD OF WARNING MCSE 2000 EXAMS ARE MUCH MORE DEMANDING THAN PREVIOUS EXAMS. I HAD A FIXED LENGTH EXAM 55 QUESTIONS IN 2HOURS 35 MINUTES. I FINISHED WITH 1 MINUTE TO SPARE. THE REASON IS THAT A GOOD 85% OF THE QUESTIONS ARE SCENARIO BASED,WITH MULTIPLE ANSWERS. THIS REQUIRES ATTENTION TO DETAIL ALSO AFTER 90 MINUTES YOU ARE MENTALLY DRAINED. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Have read better
I have used microsoft training kit books before and this one has to be so basic it doesn't really help you comprehend the material - still rely on 70-291 book for indepth information

1-0 out of 5 stars Raise Your Game Microsoft Press - Poor Repeated Content
I rarely write bad reviews, especially when it comes to exam guides after all the books cannot cover everything you're expected to know otherwise MCSE's would be little more than reference brains. The MCSE is not meant to be easy to pass and at the end of the day the book was written in 2003 and since then several new technologies have been introduced and added to the exams.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money, waste of time...
This book was a big diappointment considering it was published by Microsoft Press.I highly doubt Craig Zacker would have the capacity, knowledge, expertise or experience necessary for passing the 70-293 exam after reading this book.I read the book twice prior to the exam, which did absolutely nothing to assist me.Shame on Microsoft Press for allowing this book to be published without verifying alignment of information with their exam!!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to get certified, walk away!!!!
This book from the ones I have had the fortune to look at, is the worst. With this book you will get more confusion in terms and concepts thatin any other book. ..., some of the answers to the practice tests are wrong, the "excercises" were you have to label the elements in the powerpoint window are the most confusing item, you don't know if the author wants you to label a "slide" a "text box" in other words, you have to "guess" what is he trying to test you on. 3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Improvement
I am currently using this book. The format of this book is easy to follow, but I found several typos and the exercises at the end of the chapter have no answer sheet, so you don't know if you have answered the questions correctly. It also refers to several files for use and I didn't see them on the accompanying CD. I know Powerpoint very well, so I can easily duplicate the exercises using my own files. However, for a person new to Powerpoint this would be confusing. This book needs to have an answer sheet for all of the exercises at the end of each section and it also needs to tell you where to find the files it is referring to as you go through the exercises! On the up side, I have learned neat tricks and tips that have made my life easier when working with Powerpoint.I plan to take the MOUS within the next two months.I recommend to others, that if you purchase this book, you might want to purchase an additional study aid such as the Powerpoint 2000 Cheat Sheet that I just ordered, which received great reviews.

3-0 out of 5 stars First edition needs an overhaul
I found the work-through of the book very helpful. There are many typographical errors that make it very frustrating.People are told to add text boxes to AutoShapes - a tech support's nightmare. The CD holds a self-extracting zip that is never mentioned in the book but is necessary to do the exercises. There is no finished product once you complete the exercise to check your work against so you do not know if it is correct or not. There are many good helpful hints into the workings of PowerPoint 2000. Hopefully in the second edition these problem area will be addressed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for ground up tutorial but should also look elsewhere
This book covers many of the most of the basics you need to know in the MCSE exam (DHCP, DNS, WINS). 5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning
I believe an excellent job was done of often troubling areasof infrastructure and DNS, and while solid studying is required in addition to simply using this book in order to pass 70-216, this book will get you started

2-0 out of 5 stars BIG Book, little information.
Lots of words, but little useful information.I want a book that gets to the meat, and this is not it.I have been working with Windows for a long time.I think this book was written for a beginner, but I think it would be too confusing. I found the material very wordy and hard to follow.I got this book because of the reviews, I just don't understand how other give it 4 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Know Access in and out, then pick up this book and pass
I develop Access 2000 applications for a small consulting company.I wanted to get certified in Access for personal benefit and to see how much I knew.A few weeks before the exam, I changed my mind and actually registered for the Access XP exam instead. It is very easy to pass the Access XP exam even if you are an Access 2000 user.I passed today with an 889.Besides approximately three years of experience with Access 97/2000, I used this book as my primary resource.4-0 out of 5 stars Would recommend
I disagree with the review from Florida. I had only one minor problem with the exercises in the book matching with the files on the CD.In Unit K, page K-10, there is an exercise to query the database. The book says thereshould be 102 records matching the query done with <4/1/00 on theAttendence table except the mistake is there are a total of no recordsbefore, the earliest is 5/5/00. And only 65 records in the table to queryon. Can't possibly get the 102 records on the 65 from the query the booksays should be displayed. Never did figure out if I did something wrong orit is an error. I took the Access 2000 MOUS exam and passed with 916/1000.I have no prior experience working working with Access and did not know howto do reports, forms, etc. I used this book to go through step by step onthe how to's and will keep as a reference book. I then used the Access 2000Cheat Sheet to prepare for the exam. The book by Freiedrichsen had a lot ofMOUS objectives listed next to the objectives for each Unit. There areunits A through P. M to P have nothing to do with the the objectives set myMicrosoft although the book says the first half of the book is for theAccess Core and the remaining part will prepare for the Expert level. Thereis only one exam for Access 2000 and no core or expert level. I liked bookformat. Each page covered one topic. On the left-side would be theexplanation and walk-through, with the right-side showing pictures of whatthe screen should look like with good information. If anything, this bookhas too much information if you are preparing for the MOUS exam. Use thisbook if you have no prior experience in learning how to use Access and forreference, but use the Cheat Sheet to prepare for the exam format.Wouldhave given five stars except for the error and the objectives stated in thebook did not match Microsoft, and felt the Cheat Sheet book better preparedme for the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars We deserve better!
Attractively priced, this book is very well written, uses excellent methodology, proceeding from the simplest to the most complex topics in Access on a continuum steadily increasing in difficulty. And this is good.It comes with a data CD for the exercises in the book, which also offers ananswer key for every "Review Concepts" exercise. But both thedata for the exercises and the solutions to reviews are rife with errors!Furthermore, after the middle of the book, the data on the accompanying CDoftentimes doesn't even match the exercises! It's very demoralizing. I wasvery upbeat when I began, thinking that the errors were tiny andinsignificant. But they only get worse as you go along. Courseware must bethoroughly tested in order to be error proof. Unfortunately, this didn'thappen here. Obviously defective data files have sabotaged a very talentedand thoughtful author's work. The whole problem could be remedied with areplacement CD. I've been in touch with the publishers about the problemand I sure hope they replace the CD because its useless courseware fortraining small groups if the data disk is that defective. Otherwise theconcepts are explained concisely and accurately and I'm confident thequestions in the review sections closely resemble those on the MOUScertification test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crispy Duck or Duck Soup?
So seven reviews, one negative, six very positive, a whinge about one subject amoungst how many in the official curriculum? What would you make of it?Think I'd buy the book and get on with the studies, get certified and reap the rewards.Hey it's far better than flipping burgers or serving noodles. Duck Soup anyone!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Original Cram Book is much better
I bought this book based on the previous reviews and read the book from cover to cover. Then I worked on SelfTest Practice Test. Many things that are on the SelfTest are not mentioned at all on this book. I had to search online for things like ARC Path. Then I found the ExamCram book (without 2) that I bought 3 years ago. ARC path is well explained in one page! I have read three chapters so far and I believe I will be better prepared after reading the old cram book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I found this book to be an excellent tool for exam preparation for 70-215, especially when coupled with hands on experience and a bit of lab practice. Used this book to study for 5 days for the test and passed it easily. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Conflicted Review
My review of this book is somewhat conflicted. While I would state it would make a good book if you did not know anything about Windows 2000 Security, I find that it fails as a preparation for the 70-214 exam.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good startto learning a vast topic.
After reading the Microsoft Press book for the 70-214 exam, I can recommend it as a good start to learning about securing a Windows 2000 network, which covers a lot of territory. Since I am already a MCSE I do not plan on taking the exam but read the book because I am always interested in security books. The book has a lot of content and is loaded with step by step instructions and exercises, so much so that I thought it was mostly a "cook book" and light on the theory and practical experience end. The end of chapter questions were very brief and few in number. However the content covered was thorough and by and large accurate (the statements that ipsec requires certificates and that NT4.0 workstations apply the user configuration part of group policy are wrong). It was nice to see a specific example of how to use secedit and create a few basic script files. Kerberos authentication was nicely explained along with the benefits, and why and how you should upgrade older clients to Active Directory Client to get them up to NTLM 2. There was quite a bit of coverage on pki and setting up cerificate services and great examples of using Web Enrollment to obtain certificates. The usual stuff on managing groups/users, share and ntfs permissions, and user permissions were covered. Vpn explanations were fairly thorough, with especially good explanation of differences between pptp and l2tp. It was nice to find a chapter on wireless security that included a step by step example to setting up a WAP. The section on IIS security does not require you to be a guru at IIS, but gets to the point on how to implement various authentication methods to a website from anonymous to ssl and why and when to use each. Intrusion detection is a basic part of network security and using group policy to enable various types of auditing and using Eventcomb is well covered. There is even a lesson on how to set up and use a honey pot. The often misunderstood IPSEC is explained well enough that you can learn how to implement, create a custom policy, and do some basic troubleshooting. Service packs and hot fixes are an important part to maintaining a secure operating system, and chapter 14 covers how to use various tools like MBSA and Qchain to determine the need for and to effeciently implement these updates. Slipstreaming service packs and using RIS is also well explained.4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job but needs afew updates.
Having recently passed the 70-214 exam, which is new from Microsoft, I had used another book for the exam study as this one arrived 2 days before my exam. With the material contained in this book had it arrived earlier I could have used it to study for the exam.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book with shortcomings
This is a valuable book, it explained topics which were missing in some other books. In the other hand, the previous reviews did not mention some shortcomings in this book. The OOP part of this book is not good. The language in many parts of this book is ambiguous, it lures people to read these parts again and again, but after that the meaning is still not clear, while this repeated reading of such a big book wastes time. The sample code in this book is not available for download, although they are in the CD, but the CD is made in a mean way that the "copy" function is disabled, so this book is not good for busy people.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books on information science
The global information infrastructure may be serve as the cornerstone in the development of the world over the next decades and beyond. An understanding, or at the very least an appreciation, of the potential benefits and risks that can result from the still emerging technology is critical to ensure that the potential benefits of the technology, as actually implemented, will justify the concomitant hazards.Questions abound: In what context and by what methods will digital libraries be implemented and made available? Will the need for intellectual access be accounted for?Who will design the infrastructure? Who will manage the metadata on which the system is dependent?Who control our sources of information? How is that control to be monitored? And who do we want controlling information about us?5-0 out of 5 stars Startlingly wide-ranging look at information access
Borgman creates a compelling discussion about the GII (Global Information Infrastructure) and its actual impact on the current and near-future world. She looks at it from the point of view of access to information, scholarly publishers, digital libraries and the future of the library itself. While wide-ranging, it never loses the plot or becomes difficult to read. Worth the price of the book just to have her reference list. ... Read more

I loved this book, it does prepare you for the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Great book!
Excellent primer for the exam. I would recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I could have used this to pass the exam.
In my quest to pass the 70-214 exam I had very little material to work with and even less to practice with. Sybex has released a book with over 80 exercises and 200 practice questions that will certainly making taking the 214 exam a little easier.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute trash
This book contains as many mistakes as the Windows 2000 Professional book written by these same useless Shinder clowns. After reading the first 3 chapters I realized I was wasting my time reading this muddled garbage and threw the book in the trash where it belongs. I have ordered the Microsoft Training Kit to study for the 70-215 exam. Most of this book is an exact copy of the Windows 2000 Professional book - they haven't even bothered to replace all the "Windows 2000 Professional" parts with "Windows 2000 Server" that they've copied.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it.
This book covered a lot of information. I haven't taken the exam yet so I really can't say if the book helps in that perspective. I was able to follow a lot of the exercises. The book was written well in understandable terms and it is our text for a networking class at school. I would say that after reading this book I have a much better idea of what W2K server has to offer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Passed the test but not because of this book
This book is very wordy and has several instances of inaccurate information and typo's that make for difficult reading. The test questions in the book and on the CD are mostly ambiguous and often don't give enough information to properly answer the questions.Although I did pass the test, it was mostly because of experience, not because I read this book. ...
