4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner....Not for advanced
This book is truely for beginners who have no clue of signal Integrity. He starts this book with stuff like Ohm's law and how capacitors and inductors work which most people learn in high school.
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most readable book you'll find on this
Brook's book is exceptional in the clarity of the writing, esp. in explaining key concepts that most engineers are fuzzy on.This book is great at giving engineers an intuitive feel for basic electromagnetics and how it relates to signal integrity and emi.4-0 out of 5 stars A chasm has been bridged...
As an educator, lecturer and practicing designer I am given many books to read and make comment on. I find very few books that are able to bridge the chasm between the needs of a beginner learning about signal integrity and the needs of a professional desperate to solve design problems. This book is an excellent primer and reference for understanding the interrelationship between the board layout and the signal integrity problem. This book details design solutions to classic signal integrity problems and educates the novice in understanding the reasoning behind the solutions. There is a lot of nonsense being written about signal integrity and few people have the resources to filter out the chaff from hay. This book proves every principle presented with tested board layouts, demonstrated engineering principles, or documented laboratory results. Some people can see the world in formulas and some see the world pictorially. This book is rich in both forms of expressionism and its presentation will not exasperate the PCB designer who sees the world visually, or frustrate the engineer seeking equations for design representation. This book has been added to the required reading list for our PCB layout designers and product development engineering teams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Electrical Engineers
Great book as it is very clear, methodical, and gives great examples in which you can actually follow unlike some others.I would also recommend going through the problem sets from the authors website online as it really helps solidify the concepts taught in this book. This book is highly recommended for budding VLSI designers or engineers who just want to learn a little bit about VLSI design!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for transistor level ...

3-0 out of 5 stars It's ok...
A so-so book.Sort of sloppy, doesnt' quite stand on its own without a course to guide you through it.There is some good information in this book; the chapter on transmission lines is quite good. There are also some more practical design examples in the latter half of the book.I'd recommend the Weste book instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for novices
Although it is a little bit old and there are so many other books on the subject, I still think that it is one of the bests. This book gives you a good basic knowledge of wireless circuits and systems. It's a good reference to look at too. In general, all books by BR are good, he is an incredible writer. His books are always very good to start with when you don't really know anything about the subject. As you get to know the subject more and more, you will know the value of the book and will discover more practical stuff in it. I totally recommend this one and all his books.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK book, but buyer beware
This book covers a good deal of material in a very hot area. However, coverage is uneven with occasional mistakes. The book seems to be collected in a hurry some lecture notes. For example, the formula for the relationship between jitter and phase noise given at the beginning of the book is wrong (even units do not make sense) and is not the same for the expression given in the PLL chapter (it makes more sense).
2-0 out of 5 stars Content seemed great, but not explained in detail
When I first bought this book, I was very hopeful. The book seemed to cover a lot of relevant material, in a concise fashion. When I tried to read it however, I found it a little bit too much on the concise side. I have read very complicated books with a lot of math before, and I could follow them easier than this "easy" writing style. Almost every subject is covered in other books in more detail and better. Sometimes it's nice to have a simpler book which is an introduction, and that is what I was hoping for, but this just didn't do it for me.I donated the book to the library,as I felt I would never really get too much out of it. This didn't stop me from buying Mr. Razavi's "Design of Analog CMOS ICs " and I liked his tutorial in the IEEE Phase Lock Loop book he edited.I know he can do a better job. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginer VHDL
This book is a great book for just learning VHDL or to use it as a resource for correct syntax ussage. My only problem with the book is the lack of a chapter on Test Bench writing, you will need to pickup a different resource to learn about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book for the beginner
I purchased this book when I took my first FPGA design lab in my junior year. I went from zero to designing complex VHDL systems in very little time. Pedroni teaches synthesizable VHDL, the kind actually used by electronic design automation tools to make real circuits, and he manages to introduce the language, application, and software tool at the same time. The book is probably too basic for a practitioner wishing to brush up on the language or synthesis, but for the beginner it rocks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well organised book progresses subject well.
This book progresses the subject well by introducing the VHDL elements in a way that gives complete coverage without overwheling the reader early on.Unlike other introductions to VHDL it did not leave me with many unanswered questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
This book looks perfect on paper. The subject matter is important, it talks about many practical concepts, the cover is cute, etc. But trying to read this book I was very disappointed. The author has just cut and pasted some well-known ideas but doesn't explain anything clearly. Despite knowing the subject I found it painful to follow.I wanted to throw the book away after reading a few sections, but I kept telling myself "it can't be that bad, the material is fine, let me give it another chance". But the book is that bad! It is no excuse that this is a "handbook". There are many books that are not textbooks that do a great job explaining things.I feel sorry for anybody who is trying to learn by reading this book. If you are a beginner read Howard Johnson's classic "Black Magic" book. If you are more advanced read Clayton Paul or books on Microwave design. 4-0 out of 5 stars OK, but missing something
So far it has been useful in my designs. They seem to be better and I am sure the book has helped with certification. It has some very useful information.Unfortunatly, it does not have much supporting information or theoretical proofs.Perhaps this helps the non-math oriented user, but I can't imagine why a non-math oriented user would need such a book or what such a person would be doing designing for EMC.As an engineer, I don't take things on face value without understanding of why.The lack of general theory also makes it difficult to extend the information provided to areas not covered in the book.In short, I'd like to know a bit more about why.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for a lot of EMC/EMI pains
I got this book because the boss said to find something to help resolve the FCC/CE and other world EMI/EMC compliance issues we have, and it was instantly used and had the answers we needed.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointing. Good subject, poorly covered.
I was very disappointed with this book. It covers a very useful subject, but it is not well written. Almost every section was done better in other books covering the same material. It will be hard to prove how bad this book is, since on the surface everything seems to be there. However, as somebody who have read many books on this subject it was painful to read this one. It is more like a cut and paste job putting together well-known material without any new insights.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginner and Experienced Engineers
Well organized book that does not skip on details. It explains in a clear and concise manner transmission line issues such as reflections, the why's and how's of matching impedance, and crosstalk among others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book !
Great explanations, with good examples. It is a very easy and interesting read, at the same time going into needed detail of high speed digital signalling issues. My course uses Digital Systems Engineering by Dally as text, but I find myself reading this book instead to get a better understanding, as it is clearer and better organized.Coming in really handy for my upcoming exam review! ... It's a good book for beginners in Digital Design
3-0 out of 5 stars Better than his other one.
In first year engineering at Simon Fraser University, many of my classmates and I absolutely hated Mano's other text, "Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals (2nd ed. updated)". However since I have picked this text up I have found Mano to be much easier to read, but that could be because I have adjusted to the material and his writing style.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
This was the text book used in one of my computer science courses.

2-0 out of 5 stars Still excellent, but old in the tooth, and preposterously overpriced
Well, I guess it's been a while since I've been a college student. I'm a crusty old amateur radio hobbyist now. I guess all college texts have ridiculous prices. This book used to be the best reference I've ever seen on basic electronics for non-EE's, and even for non-engineers. It's not much of a cookbook - instead, it will make you sit down and work through the fundamentals of the circuits you're designing or adapting. The second ed. is getting long in the tooth, and since the book is used as a college text, it's preposterously overpriced. The one terrible thing about the book is that there are no answers to the (otherwise excellent) exercises, and you have to pay out again to get answers to the questions you're not sure about. It will be interesting to see what the 3rd ed. looks like. Maybe I'll start a web site and publish the answers online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for working engineers
This is a book that belongs on the desk of every working
4-0 out of 5 stars Not outstanding, but still better than the rest....
Most, if not all, general electronics textbooks start from basic principles such as circuit analysis and low-level components (RLCs, semiconductor physics, etc) before briefly covering system design. Unfortunately, such texts drown readers in (mostly) useless theory and math that most engineers will never use.

3-0 out of 5 stars grade B
This is certainly one of the best book written on delta-sigmas but a good book on the subject has yet to be written.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Univied, Consistent Approach
Much of the recent literature on digital signal processing has concentrated on the digital aspects of the task. The result is a surplus of books on the digital signal processing chips and programming techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Don't spend your money on this book, there is a lot of repetive stuff in it.Also, if you already work in the field of ASIC design, you will not learn much in this book, trust me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful in practice
This book pointed out many design problems that I just met before. Designer could avoid many of them by following the guidelines in this book. I think it would help me a lot in my design work. Thanks to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend it to every designer as a handbook
The guidelines are not difficult to understand, and you may have the pieces here and there. But this book has a broad coverage. I got this book by luck draw at SNUG. Didn't pay attention at first until I read it. Very well organized, very accurate description of the real feelings of doing a real chip. The methodology it talks about is not limited to "reuse". I suggest the auther change the title for next edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BJT Explanation is the best I have ever read
This book is a great book in my opinion.I have not finished all of it but find it to be a great reference. The thing I liked the most about this book so far was the explanation of the BJT!!It is the best explanation I have read on the subject so far.The author clearly tries to show why the inventor of the transistor would think to use PN junctions characteristics to make the BJT, and how important the minority carriers play in the whole process, something entirely neglected in most other descriptions.I truly feel now I understand how a transistor works, and can analyze not only the npn transistor but the pnp transistor as well, and get why pnp transistors are thought of as being hole injected versus electron injected for the npn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Electronic Circuit Design
Bottom Line:This is currently the best undergraduate textbook for a first course on electronic circuit design.
4-0 out of 5 stars good book for design
I'm currently an undergraduate electrical engineering student at the University of California at Davis. While no design circuits classes are easy, I give this book a high rating because it is somewhat easier to read and understand than other circuits books I've come across in my time as a student. There are enough examples so that the student can figure out what's going on if the teacher is sufficient. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not so good
I have over 10 years of electronics design experience but have never used VHDL (CUPL and ABLE, yes). This book seems like it was written not by a hardware designer, but a by a programmer. Starting with zero knowledge of VHDL, his examples are hard to follow, and coding style is not consistant leading to confusion. I downladed a free tutorial program from Aldec.com and it has helped my understanding of the book GREATLY. In fact, it turns out the author references Aldec's Active-HDL simulator in appendix A.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to VHDL
Mr Yalamanchili does a great job of introducing the reader to VHDL.The book is long enough to get you to understand the VHDL language, without being so long as to bore you to tears. After reading the book, I feel that I could design most any simple-medium complexity digital circuit in VHDL without much difficulty. My only complaint is the author's poor indenting of his code. This makes it difficult at times to follow the flow of his code.Other than this minor flaw, the book is perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book lives up well to its title
I know there are many hardware design engineers and students who suffer from"VHDL anxiety" since it tends to seem alot less intuitive than verilog (especially in this age when C has surpassed ada as a common programming language taught at universities). For this reason Yalamanchili's VHDL Starter's Guide represents a nice contribution to the field. There is enough material in the guide to satisfy, say a senior computer-engineering student who is being intorduced for the first time. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on mixed-signal circuit design
This is the best book I have found so far on CMOS mixed-signal circuit design. It is not only an excellent textbook for senior or graduate student to learn mixed-signal circuit design but also a "must have" reference book for circuit designers doing analog/mixed-signal design. The book presents not only the therectical background for data converter using SPICE modeling approach, but also the practical considerations for implementing data converters at the circuit level. The materials it covers about submicron CMOS circuit design has provided reader with necessary background and techniques (which are very practical) for transistor level design like no other analog textbook you can find.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text for learning and for reference!
The book begins by covering basic data converter theory and includes methods for SPICE modeling of data converters. An important aspect to this coverage is that the metrics for evaluating data converters are explained clearly (this makes the book a great reference when wading through some of the spec sheets or journal articles covering data converters).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction
This book covers many of the topics in Sedra and Smith, but does so in a very understandable manner. Examples are well chosen and clearly explained. Far clearer than Sedra and Smith.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent - but 1st ed is better
Great book - the best compared to many others in the market. Most university entry level electronics texts are useless to students - too damn hard to read. Most authors were probably too busy trying to impress - resulting in something which is, yes, complete and blah and blah, but totally useless to students. No, not this book - it took pain to ease a reader into the material. But, unfortunately, the 2nd ed has lost much of that refreshing "innocence" of the 1st ed and conformed to be more like others in the market - too bad. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful yet buggy...
Fairly useful program for building logic circuits and getting a visual of timing aspects, but program seems too buggy to totally recommend.I only bought it because it was required for a class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent digital simulation software for Windows
If you have access to a Windows machine (Windows 2000/XP/NT 4.0) this is excellent software to learn digital concepts and simulate digital circuits. It's also a pretty decent schematic editor for simple circuits although I'd recommend DesignWorks Lite/Pro from Capilano Computing (capilano.com) as a better editor. LogicWorks software was originally developed on and for the Macintosh OS but version 5.0 doesn't support the Macintosh. For that there is LogicWorks 4.5 available directly from Capilano Computing ([...]) which supports MacOS 9 and X but doesn't include VHDL support.

5-0 out of 5 stars A significant improvement in a good system - - -
I have used LogicWorks4 in a computer design class with fair results - (very good for small jobs - starts to get shaky with a thousand gates or so).

5-0 out of 5 stars Electrical Engineers, This is what You are looking for
I used this book in Graduate course. I found it very useful. It covers most of the theoritical and graph techniques for circuits and network analysis. All the methods are discribed in a clear way along with examplesand problems. This is good for upper level undergraduate courses and a"must" for graduate students. This is the Text you are lookingfor, to use for your courses and for Ph.D. comprehensive exams. I'll keepit with me until I retire... ... Read more
