5-0 out of 5 stars It's exactly what the title states, "Adaptive Filter THEORY"
I was introduced to this text in a graduate course. I was not too thrilled about learning from another Haykin book due to a previous experience with his Communication Systems text in an undergraduate course (Horribly confusing... Proakis's text is infinitely better). To my surprise, the book was very detailed and easy to read. The math is very clear and detailed (great for the self learner). Also, the second chapter, which serves as a review of stationary processes and properties, was written much better than most random process textbooks (I applaud Haykin for this given the section was only a review). In chapter 3 or 4, he shows the derivation of the Levison-Durbin Algorithm step-by-step. I strongly disagree with some of the other reviews stating this text is just the typical engineering manual or cookbook with no explainations.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad reference book.
This book looks very impressive, but if you try to understand it you'll find it very mechanical. There is not much motivation behind the many pages of formulas and derivations. I'm not even sure how many people actually read those derivations becuase even in its 4th edition the book and its solution manual both have many typos (see, for example, equations 8.11 and 12.5). Even the problems are more focused on derivations than on numerical examples. This is a good cookbook if you just want to implement an algorithm or find some pointers to the original research papers. Like many other reviewers, I beleive that engineering textbooks are losing their depth and becoming more and more like instruction manuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for Adaptive DSP...
I have always wondered why many people have negative opinions about books by Simon Haykin, whether it is 'Communication Systems' or 'Adaptive Filter Theory'. Particularly, this book 'Adaptive Filter Theory', in my opinion, is one of the bestbooks on this subject. As Julius Kusuma correctly mentioned, this book is indeed an "adventure ride" into the field of Adaptive Filter Theory.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great subject material, unevenly covered
I had mixed feelings reading this book. Some sections were so good I was saying, "Bravo, well done" while other sections were so bad, I felt sorry for anyone trying to learn by reading them. (E.g. Ch4 on frequency domain modeling.) The book covers extremely useful material, but in an uneven way. It will especially appeal to readers who want simplified discussions of the ideas rather than deeper more theoretical discussions. For example, crosstalk --one of the most important topics, is covered in a very light manner, recommending use of simulators to obtain accurate results. Compare this with the coverage of the same subject in the remarkable book "Electromagnetic Compatibility" by Clayton Paul. Now, that book is "advanced" and "magical". This book doesn't get into any deep discussions of the fundamentals. It says that current flows in a loop, and inductance is related to loop area. Simple enough.Yet, how do we explain the inductance of the pin of an IC package, which is definitely not a loop? How is the energy-based definition of inductance used by simulators related to this simple definition? Even more fundamental, given that voltage can't be defined in a region where the magnetic field is changing, how come we can use the concept of voltage? (Read Paul Clayton for discussing all these concepts in great detail.) 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have reference for ALL digital design engineers
After ploughing through this book, I found it to be a treasure trove of useful information. It's well layed out, and well explained. As with their first "black magic text", it's full of helpful hints, guides, and rule'o'thumbs that will get you up to speed quickly so you can apply them and get expected results from your design. Well done Mr Johnson and Mr Graham, another excellent reference! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusually clear book -- and great for OCR researchers.
This nifty book is unusual in several respects: it is written in an extremely clear and simple style; it presents good clear code, both in print and on the accompanying CD; and it presents a variety of different methods for achieving each given goal. For example, the book presents a half-dozen different algorithms (usually with code) for edge-detection, for thresholding, and for skeletonization. For the most part, the book does a good job of explaining the relative merits or suitabilities of the different algorithms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding source of implementations of image processing algorithms
This book is a great source of code for the implementations of common and not so common algorithms used in image processing and computer vision. It is not meant to be a textbook on either subject. For that I suggest you turn to "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods for the subject of image processing and to "Computer Vision" by Linda Shapiro for computer vision.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
It has source C code available, which I found is very helpful. It would be better if its code is written in C++. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books on OOP for Flash
I think this is a beginner friendly book to learning and developing Flash 8 Object Oriented code. The book is an easy read and has a pretty good introduction to Flash. It even goes into like 4 design patterns which if you are an OOP developer is generally the next step in design and architecture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners in OOP
I finally decided to take the plunge into OOP after I realized that is where Flash is headed. With the advent of ActionScript 3.0 around the corner (or out now if you're already dabbling in it), you just know that everything is soon going to be class based. This book is a great start to your journey, as someone who originally started to read Colin Moock's Essential ActionScript 2.0 will tell you.It is a LOT easier to read than EA2.0 as I'm not well versed on theory nor do I, at least at this point, really care that much about it.I'm one of those people who want to dive in and learn the syntax/usage, and then I'd like to figure out where it all stems from, not the other way around as it just makes it harder for me to learn that way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Take your Flash developing to the next level!
Before reading this book I thought that OOP meant writing a class and applying it to as many objects as I wanted. Was I ever wrong! This book not only gives you thorough explanations of what OOP is, it also provides detailed explanations on why you should use it. It's hard to explain the misconceptions that many people can pick up by trying to learn OOP by reading random articles around the web. This gently leads you through all the elements of OOP and clears up any of the misconceptions you may have previously had. It even teaches you programming techniques and design patterns such as how to separate the data and control from the style as well as how to manage multiple styles, colors, sounds, etc. with one class and dynamically apply them to whatever objects you want.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not intended for the web design novice
I am completely new to web design and found this book extremely overwhelming. The series title, "Visual Quickstart Guide", appears to be aimed towards beginners such as myself, however it is probably aimed at people with experience with older versions of Dreamweaver looking to upgrade their knowledge. There is so much talk about the old dreamweaver, new ways of doing things etc. and I'm not really interested in that.Other clues that this book is not designed for a beginner is the lack of glossary (mentioned in another review) and the amount of space devoted to setting one's preferences of Dreamweaver. As a novice, how am I supposed to know what I prefer when I don't even know where to begin?

2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing for the Novice
While I have a background in graphics programs, I'm entirely new to Dreamweaver. This book looked like it would be a sole resource. It wasn't.Too often terms are mentioned without definitions (a glossary would be a help).More than once a process was described without a basic first step that would seem obvious to experienced users, but only confused novice users.I wound up having to use other resources to make sense of this book.I wouldn't recommend it to first timers like myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and specific at the same time
This is a great book, though I have used DreamWeaver for several years, I wanted to see how DreamWeaver 8 was going to deal with CSS.I took the time to read most of the chapters, and picked up a lot of tips. The book is comprehensive and specific at the same time.Concepts are interlaced with keystroke instructions.Well worth the price and a great reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars John@home.com
First of all, this is the best introductory book I have ever read. Boylestadt does an excellent job of getting to the point on the subjects he talks about. The tools he explains in network theorems are very good for the ones who wish to bone up on their skills. You might want to have some other books that explain the subject a little simpler, but you have to work any way to get at that knowledge level. This is a good class room book where one is in a group and can communicate the thoughts they have leaned from the book.1-0 out of 5 stars A student who is using this book for Circuits Analysis
Hello to everyone who reads my review of this book. First of all for those of you who will need a TI-86 calculator which this book calls for, dont worry about because doesnt even tell you how to use it for certain applications such as Super Mesh, Method Analysis and so on. I had to go to a student who was in a College Algebra class to learn how to use this calculator for this book! Second my professor shows better examples on solve the problems in the book which the book makes it so confusing. You have to ask the professor to show several examples to learn what the book is covering. I would suggest to professors and the Director/Chairman as a student, look for a book that you can use in the class other than this where students can learn from and not become so confused over the material to where almost every student in the class has to ask the professor several questions about the topic and meet with him one on one. I am speaking for other students by the way. I am also helping the professors also. Get a book that students can learn from instead of a one on one discusssion with the professor. Some thing else other than this book! Thanks for your time reading my review. ~Scott~

1-0 out of 5 stars Lack of communication, needs more depth in examples.
This book has a very clear, "lack of communication". The book is fine for the basics but the problem exercises do not involve the basics. The author explains problems from the beginning but goes straight to the end with the problem exercises. There needs to be more depth between the examples and the problems. This book is fine for some one who already knows it. But,if you don't and want to get confused and frustrated, then I recommend this book.If you are unfortunate and are forced to use this book, I would look for an outside source for reference.Beware!!!My question to the author is: Why are you keeping the middle a secret. This stuff is not as hard as the author makes it.To sum this up, the author says here is an elementary example now I want you to solve this advanced problem. Students need more examples with more depth. This book may be titled as introductory but it sure is geared for the more advanced. Thanks, but no thanks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take your OpenGL skills to the next level
Since its first release in 1992, OpenGL has been rapidly adopted as the graphics API of choice for real-time interactive 3D graphics applications. The OpenGL state machine is easy to understand, but its simplicity and orthogonality enable a multitude of interesting effects that require more room than can be accommodated in the OpenGL "Red Book". The objective of this book is to demonstrate how to generate more satisfying images using OpenGL in general, and how to achieve some sophisticated results in particular. There are three general areas of discussion: basic OpenGL concepts, basic techniques, and advanced techniques.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, not better than others
I bought this book as it was a required book at the University. I found that it is no better then any other introductory book on DSP such as the one by Boaz Porat. Moreover, you could buy two other DSP books at the same price.

This is very good book for teaching and for self study of digital signal processing. It is especially useful for Matlab users.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text for introductory electronics
During my introductory electronics course I studied from both Sedra/Smith and this text.In my opinion, Burns and Bond is a better text. The incorporation of SPICE in Burns/Bond gives valuable insight in the design of electronic circuits. The Burns/Bond text is also more straightforward than Sedra/Smith.The presentation style of some topics in Sedra/Smith makes them difficult to learn. This is not the case in Burns/Bond.This is an excellent text ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Image Analysis Book Review
I found the book to be very informative and I acquired several ideas from reading it. But, I repeatedly found myself searching the book for definitions of some of the terms it uses throughout its text. Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis will introduce new terms without any hint of their meaning, assuming that the reader already knows all they need to know about the subject matter (which would negate the need to buy the book!). This book sorely needs a glossary.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's just great
The book is just great! I used the source code from the CD-ROM for various image processing projects. The algorithms are also very practical if you have to deal with images. The code is neat and ready to compile and run.5-0 out of 5 stars Luis J Gutierrez

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginer VHDL
This book is a great book for just learning VHDL or to use it as a resource for correct syntax ussage. My only problem with the book is the lack of a chapter on Test Bench writing, you will need to pickup a different resource to learn about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book for the beginner
I purchased this book when I took my first FPGA design lab in my junior year. I went from zero to designing complex VHDL systems in very little time. Pedroni teaches synthesizable VHDL, the kind actually used by electronic design automation tools to make real circuits, and he manages to introduce the language, application, and software tool at the same time. The book is probably too basic for a practitioner wishing to brush up on the language or synthesis, but for the beginner it rocks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well organised book progresses subject well.
This book progresses the subject well by introducing the VHDL elements in a way that gives complete coverage without overwheling the reader early on.Unlike other introductions to VHDL it did not leave me with many unanswered questions.

3-0 out of 5 stars low quality paper
For a $90+ book the quality of paper is low and binding very bad. On the very day I got the book from Amazon, I had papers coming out unstuck. The paper used is not archival quality, typically expected for such high priced books. I am very disappointed. I have no doubts the text material is great and will be valid for a long time but I am sure the paper will not last even a few months.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn detection theory get this book.
This book presents the fundamental ideas in detection theory (Hypothesis testing for you math types) in a very accessible way.It was one of the few textbooks I could read without feeling like I should be taking a class to go along with it. First the book starts off with a short chapter explaining what detection theory is. This chapter is so well written and illustrated that I've used it to explain to my friends what it is I do at work. This type of very good introduction is repeated at the start of each chapter. But I would have to say the strength of the book is in the examples. All the main ideas are demonstrated by examples that have been worked out in detail. There are several of these worked out examples per chapter and they range form simple, to the kinds of problems you may face in real life. I keep this book on my desk at work, and on more than on occasion I looked liked a genius by using this book and it's examples to solve a problem in minuets that looked like it would take hours (or days).

5-0 out of 5 stars The best textbook in Estimation Theory
Steven Kay has done a superb job. His coverage of different aspects of estimation theory make this book an excellent reference for the working engineer, as well as a great college textbook. All the topics are wellcovered, there are meaningful examples that apply the theory to differentaspects of signal processing, and the problem sets are very useful. Also, the addition of small appendixes to the end of some chapters is veryunique. They usually contain additional material to clarify a methodpresented in the chapter or discuss some mathematical result. A book thatcan balance theory with practical applications is not easy to find, especially in a difficult area like statistical signal processing. This isthe ultimate guide to estimation theory and its applications. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointing. Good subject, poorly covered.
I was very disappointed with this book. It covers a very useful subject, but it is not well written. Almost every section was done better in other books covering the same material. It will be hard to prove how bad this book is, since on the surface everything seems to be there. However, as somebody who have read many books on this subject it was painful to read this one. It is more like a cut and paste job putting together well-known material without any new insights.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginner and Experienced Engineers
Well organized book that does not skip on details. It explains in a clear and concise manner transmission line issues such as reflections, the why's and how's of matching impedance, and crosstalk among others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book !
Great explanations, with good examples. It is a very easy and interesting read, at the same time going into needed detail of high speed digital signalling issues. My course uses Digital Systems Engineering by Dally as text, but I find myself reading this book instead to get a better understanding, as it is clearer and better organized.Coming in really handy for my upcoming exam review! ... Editorial Review

This text is geared towards a one-semester graduate-level course in statistical signal processing and estimation theory. The author balances technical detail with practical and implementation issues, delivering an exposition that is both theoretically rigorous and application-oriented. The book covers topics such as minimum variance unbiased estimators, the Cramer-Rao bound, best linear unbiased estimators, maximum likelihood estimation, recursive least squares, Bayesian estimation techniques, and the Wiener and Kalman filters. The author provides numerous examples, which illustrate both theory and applications for problems such as high-resolution spectral analysis, system identification, digital filter design, adaptive beamforming and noise cancellation, and tracking and localization. The primary audience will be those involved in the design and implementation of optimal estimation algorithms on digital computers. The text assumes that you have a background in probability and random processes and linear and matrix algebra and exposure to basic signal processing. Students as well as researchers and practicing engineers will find the text an invaluable introduction and resource for scalar and vector parameter estimation theory and a convenient reference for the design of successive parameter estimation algorithms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Legendary and masterpiece in estimation theory
Without any hesitation, I consider this book as a masterpiece in the area of statistical signal processing. Kay takes the reader to the journey of estimation theory as if a science teacher takes his students to a field trip. The one special feature of this book is the convergence of thought that reader obtains upon reading the book. Kay lays a fundamental bridge between various estimators using his succinct style for describing the subject.5-0 out of 5 stars couldn't rate 6... a must !
I've had tough courses on statistical signal processing as a post-grade student. I am often confused in front of a problem and turning back to the notes taken in class doesn't help much.5-0 out of 5 stars A reference for self-directed study
This text is very good for those who start doing research in statistical signal processing. A lot of explanations, technical terms are well presented and consistent, plus a number of examples that help you to learn about different statistical signal processing concepts and algorithms.
