1-0 out of 5 stars think twice before getting
unless you have an awesome professor that teaches in detail your going to need additional books/resources to help you learn the subject. all the information in the book is vague, it goes into very little detail, and doesnt help you complete the problems at the end of the chapters

1-0 out of 5 stars Just go light $119 on fire...
...and save yourself the grief of trying to learn anything from this book. This is the required text in one of my EE courses and I haven't found a single redeeming quality in it yet.
1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst written college books ever.
Having had to suffer through 1 semester of this book, I was horrified to learn that my school had decided to keep this book for the second semester of signals! This is book would be much better as a hyperlinked document, because the author continuously references other chapters and formula #'s.His examples are confusing, and leave you wondering what you are looking for.A visist to the book's website leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth.Honestly, if you need this book, find another book to use as a reference because you will need it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Still excellent, but old in the tooth, and preposterously overpriced
Well, I guess it's been a while since I've been a college student. I'm a crusty old amateur radio hobbyist now. I guess all college texts have ridiculous prices. This book used to be the best reference I've ever seen on basic electronics for non-EE's, and even for non-engineers. It's not much of a cookbook - instead, it will make you sit down and work through the fundamentals of the circuits you're designing or adapting. The second ed. is getting long in the tooth, and since the book is used as a college text, it's preposterously overpriced. The one terrible thing about the book is that there are no answers to the (otherwise excellent) exercises, and you have to pay out again to get answers to the questions you're not sure about. It will be interesting to see what the 3rd ed. looks like. Maybe I'll start a web site and publish the answers online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for working engineers
This is a book that belongs on the desk of every working
4-0 out of 5 stars Not outstanding, but still better than the rest....
Most, if not all, general electronics textbooks start from basic principles such as circuit analysis and low-level components (RLCs, semiconductor physics, etc) before briefly covering system design. Unfortunately, such texts drown readers in (mostly) useless theory and math that most engineers will never use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Text I've Had
While I maybe be biased in saying this is the best text I've had at a certain school (where the author teaches), I feel this book makes a solid effort at covering the material. The book is organized nicely and the end of chapter questions always relate to the chapter material.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product!
I recieved a book in excellent condition at a very good price.I would definately purchase from this company in the future and recommend that you do the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great text, some room for improvement
Pierret is an excellent author and explains fundamental concepts in plain language. After the initial treatment of Miller indices and quantum mechanics, the coverage for pn diodes begins. This is where the book shines. The coverage is extremely thorough, the derivations are done without skipping any important calculations (unless they're unnecessary or too complex for the scope of the book), and the reader is always pointed toward the most important results. This coverage serves an excellent preparation for studying the BJT, which is likewise covered well. Done especially well are the energy band diagrams for pn junctions and BJTs. Pierret understands that knowing the energy band diagrams well means knowing the device well and emphasizes this fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook
This is an excellent textbook. Easy to follow if you are comfortable with Electromagnetics already.Lot's of math and examples inside.Make sure u get this book first, if you study MRI.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive text for the signal processing of MRI
Magnetic resonance has recently recieved many riches in the form of excellent, definitive texts that have bundled together the advances of the last 20 or so years.Drs. Liang and Lauterbur have added to this trove by writing a text that goes beyond the standard descriptions of magnetic resonance image formation and including many advanced techniques available today, some of which they originated. The ideal audience for this text includesscientists, engineers, and physicians actively developing MRI applications from the physics on up. Though containing many recent developments it contains a core of medical imaging information that will not be outdated. The mathematical depth is sufficient to serve as a reference of basic and sophisticated methods but with enough pedagogical information to tutor the interested student. Liang and Lauterbur should be on the shelf of any serious professional or insightful student.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of MR physics, however complicated maths.
The selection of the chapters and the overall coverage of this book are excellent. It provides an outstanding and detailed description of MR physics and of how MR signals are generated and processed. However, notbeing an engineer or a physicist but a MD interested in MRI, I had someproblems with the mathematical background required to understand theformulas used in this book. I feel that the book would be greatly improvedif a more detailed explanation to the mathematics were given. At thispoint, I would recommend this book to graduate students or Ph.D.'s inphysics, in biomedical or in electrical engineering, who want to understandin detail the principles of MR signal generation and processing. Because ofthe somewhat complicated mathematics, the book might be somewhat lessdestined, but still of interest, to radiologists and MRI physicians who, like me, want to enhance their understanding of MR physics and signalprocessing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars crap
not very helpful compared to the textbook I have. It has a lot of problems and worked out solutions sure, but not a whole lot on explaining the concepts behind them in words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a cheap textbook and source of solved problems
This little Schaum's outline is an excellent introduction to signals and systems aimed primarily at the upper undergraduate electrical engineering student. It starts out with an introduction to the various properties of systems - Linearity, Time invariance, causality, BIBO stability - defines them clearly and explains what other properties hold if these properties are present. It does this in plain language that is absent in many expensive textbooks. Next it moves on to clearly describing convolution - the bane of many an EE student's existence. Next it shows how the loathsome task of convolution can be replaced by transform methods if you are dealing with an LTI system. The Laplace Transform method is introduced for continuous systems, and the Z-Transform for discrete time systems. Next Fourier analysis is explained for both continuous and discrete time systems. Next, the student gets just a taste of control theory with a chapter on state space analysis. The final chapter is on joining continuous and discrete systems with discussions on aliasing and sampling of continuous signals. These are very important since everything starts out and often ends up as an analog signal, even if you process it digitally. Of course, there is the ample helping of examples, solved problems, and unsolved problems that Schaum's outlines are famous for. I highly recommend this cost effective study aid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book

5-0 out of 5 stars The most universal treatment of the subject
I say universal because this book would appeal to engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians alike. Mallat was particularly successful to present the topic in a sufficiently rigorous way but without losing sight of the practical and more intuitive side. The presentation comprises the mathematical and the signal processing viewpoints simultaneously. The wavelet field is very vast by now with several subfields. In this respect, Mallat made a great selection of topics in this book. There is a chapter on estimation which offers great review material and pretty much the state-of-the art on signal estimation over a wavelet basis. The chapter on approximation is particularly useful for those who are not well versed in approximation theory and thus areunable to understand other treatments. If you're interested in learning wavelet theory to solve practical problems such as image compression, signal estimation, etc, this is the book to have.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst textbook I have ever seen
I just finished Chapter 3 of this book, but I have had enough of it. Conceptions about Fourier Transform are not clear at all.And the most unbearable thing is that, there are many printing errors which may lead to misunderstanding.

2-0 out of 5 stars Weak and disorganized
After some years in the IC design business (mostly analog) I needed to teach a course on ASICSs. This book was the text specified by my predecessor. I did not like the book, and eventually read the Weste and Harris book in its 3rd edition. Wolf is not nearly as clear, complete and logically organized as Weste and Harris - no comparison.

4-0 out of 5 stars covers current ideas
A start of the art chip may well have over 10 million or 100 million transistors. How to design such a formidable device? Wolf gives a decent explanation to the student or engineer. You have to be careful here. The term VLSI has been in wide use since the 80s. There are scads of books with "VLSI" in their titles. Yet an unwary reader might end up trolling an obsolete text. With Wolf's book, the material reflects current design standards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best buy for practical optics perston: Buiding Electro-Optical Systems: Making It All Work
Briefly speaking, everybody dealing seriiously with optical design, or even doing academic research, should keep this book on the desk all the time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but sorely needs references!
This is an excellent how-to book. It's the Home Depot of optics. But the almost complete lack of references (at least in the edition I reviewed) is a HUGE disappointment. This general text could have been so much more useful with a few selected hooks into the specialized literature.I hope the author and publisher consider this seriously for future editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Integrated view of modern CMOS technology from the world expert
I've read a number of books in this field - Plummer, Wolf, Campbell, Sze, Madou. Each book has its strength, and Plummer's book stands out in terms of its broad, in-depth coverage of modern silicon CMOS technology. It doesn't cover MEMS or other exotic nanofabrication.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source on MODERN silicon vlsi technology
The best part of this book is that it covers modern fabrication technology. I expecially liked the approach of introducing the complete CMOS fabrication flow in the beginning. It puts a context to following chapters. It is what I call system level approach for slicon fabrication. There is also emphasis on measurement and simulutions that are missing from traditional books. Both these are essential to modern technology. Also, I was very happy to see details on manufacturing choices - e.g. LOCOS vs STI. Explanations are clear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent combinations of basics & updated research
Before this book was published, Wolf & Tauber's book was the only goodreference I had. Plummer's new book has a thorough review of basicprinciples, very well updated parts on current manufacturing equipments(Wolf's book also has extensive coverage in this respect). The best part inmy opinion is oxidation & diffusion parts where the authors are one ofthe leaders in current research. The book not only focuses on the specificdetails, but also gives an integrated view of the whole CMOS fabricationprocess, which I enjoyed a lot.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
In this book, the ideas and formulas are well presented to the readers. Notations are very consistent throughout the entire book. I have enjoyed reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is the best textbook I've ever read. The mix of theory and practice, examples and math, and the ordered introduction of concepts flows so well it reads like a treasure quest.Everything has its place, and the place is known - you just have to follow the signs and keep an eye out for those which are subtler than others, just to keep things alive and interesting. It's indicative of the clarity of thinking and broad sweep of this work that you would refer to it (I do and other students I know as well), for other subject matter such as communications, linear algebra, digital filters, probability and control theory. The homework problems are not just a series of one-liners as in most graduate level text books, but well-marked road maps addressing points discussed in the text and opening up new possibilities. The computer projects are very well commented and the results analysed. The language is concise yet fluid, and there are extremely few typos of any kind. This is a very, very high quality work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I work on 802.11b and 802.11a/OFDM modems and was looking for some kind of coherent text on decision feedback equalization and other tracking schemes when I stumbled upon this book. I'm deep into chapter three and I can already draw the following conclusions.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Don't spend your money on this book, there is a lot of repetive stuff in it.Also, if you already work in the field of ASIC design, you will not learn much in this book, trust me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful in practice
This book pointed out many design problems that I just met before. Designer could avoid many of them by following the guidelines in this book. I think it would help me a lot in my design work. Thanks to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend it to every designer as a handbook
The guidelines are not difficult to understand, and you may have the pieces here and there. But this book has a broad coverage. I got this book by luck draw at SNUG. Didn't pay attention at first until I read it. Very well organized, very accurate description of the real feelings of doing a real chip. The methodology it talks about is not limited to "reuse". 5-0 out of 5 stars Reference Resource
Comprehensive in-depth reference tool - this is how the book has been characterized by a university professor using it for his course instruction. I concur. Amazing amount of practical detail in one refernce. Dimensionally a bit large and gangly but likely would require mulitple volumes if in standard book size. The web page link is a nice feature given the fast moving topic. Cleanroom reference is out of date and could be updated given the reference focus. Text discusssions well written and unusually pleasant to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Restoration and Retouching
Very detail lessons. Not for the Photoshop novice. A good working knowledge of Photoshop is needed. Excellent learning tool for those interested in all aspects of photo restoration and retouching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Katrin Eismann is a great teacher
I've read her other book on compositing and all I can say is I love her style of teaching! It's inspiring and not canned at all. She doesn't teach you to just dial in numbers, but instead she focuses on the concepts so that you can then decide what numbers you need by yourself!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginers not advanced uses
I was hoping this would cover the advanced features of fireworks, but this is clearly not the point. Masking, for example, is barely touched. Compositing hardly at all. I was really dissapointed as it does not help with the great features that set fireworks 8 apart from other graphics programs for the web. I think the online help is actually more helpful and useful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners!
If you know NOTHING about Fireworks this is the book to have as it guides you through the most basic of tools that Fireworks has.Nothing in depth but given the small size of the book I would expect that!Easy to follow along!

4-0 out of 5 stars great book for novice-to-advanced beginners

4-0 out of 5 stars hands on guide
This book is geared towards the synopsys synthesis tools (as evident in the title). It gives brief explanations about vhdl and verilog coding style (which can be found in many other books).

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Self Study Guide
I grade the first 20 chapters an A ... the remainder: a C+
5-0 out of 5 stars Background comments
A few comments concerning the material and Dr. Roth. I had the pleasure of using the book while it was still being 'student tested' prior to publication back in the 1970s, and found the course so interesting that I proctored it the following semester. My background prior to taking what was at the time a senior level EE course included no EE whatsoever. The material was well-organized and presented in a consistent pedagogical manner that I find rare in technical textbooks.
5-0 out of 5 stars New Fifth Edition correct flaws
I reviewed the Fourth edition before, but have now revised that review to reflect major improvements in the new edition.
