Electric Circuits
The book presents material very clearly. There are many examples to pratice.
third edition is out!
This gorgeous Electrical Circuits textbook is now in its third edition - And even more attractive now. The layout is enhanced, and the presentation actually flows even more beautifully with the math. I enjoyed the first two editions - but this one is quite innovative in the introduction of KCIDE (knowledge capturing integrated design environment), a software designed to reinforce all the engineering concepts presented in the book as well as the problem solution process. I hope that more of my teachers will start appreciating the novel design of this book.

Beginning electrical engineering
It's a good read so far.Understandable with tons of examples and practice problems.It is for the first circuit analysis course.It is not for beginning digital.If you work the problems you will learn the basics towards being a EE or good tech.It is calculus based, but the math is held down to a tolerable level. ... Cannibalizing on Manolakis' other book?!
I just got it the other day, and saw much more changes than was originally reported.
Good book
I have read many DSP books, this turns out to be the best one. The other good DSP book to mention is the "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" (Lyons) which is written in favor of beginners. Not enough content to warrant the high price
This updated edition of the digital image processing text geared towards satellite-derived remotely sensed data has some good content, but like previous editions it is much too expensive for what you ultimately receive. For general digital image processing and its algorithms I really think that "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods provides much more quality for a lower price. Granted, this book has some GIS specific information in it that other books don't have, but I don't think that this warrants the huge price tag. The presentation is not particularly compelling either. Quite a bit of room is taken up with large tables and sample imagery rather than instruction and algorithm details. I would really suggest that someone interested in the specific problems of processing satellite imagery look at some of the online resources for the pre-processing issues unique to this field, and then look at the Gonzalez and Woods book for a much better explanation of digital image processing in general, including the pattern recognition issues of the later chapters of this book that I think are particularly poorly explained. The Frontier of Game Design
As game budgets get fatter and the profile of the medium gets bigger, a whole new audience will exist with a demand for games that involve meaningful social play and interesting characters. While the techniques and concepts laid out in Dr. Isbister's book are useful for improving the fiction of games, in the form of writing, audio and character art, an experimental designer can infer some groundbreaking mechanics from this text. I'm personally working on an experimental indie game that hinges on inter-character drama, and Dr. Isbister's ideas have served as one of my primary sources of inspiration.

Not fair!
Last review wasn't quite fair.I know the author, and I can tell you that the delays in shipping are entirely due to the publisher and are not the fault of either Amazon or Katherine Isbister.

AWFUL!
Did anybody proofread this book?If Macromedia had bothered to have someone unfamiliar with the book work through the exercises they would have discovered that just the first chapter has more errors than you can shake a stick at.The book refers to files on the disk that don't exist.You're told to load a file that 'you created earlier in this lesson' which has never been mentioned before.It's as though entire pages have been deleted from this book, yet the information on those pages is refered to later.After a few very frustrating hours with this book I'm ready to pitch it out the window.
Try another training manual
The examples that the manual goes through is not applicable to using flash for website design.The examples in the book are more gear towards creating a flash application.I wish I didn't spend money on this.

Not bad, but not great either
I do have to say I expected more from the "mouth" of Macromedia but it did have some tips that where useful. However the QA team must have been asleep on this book editing because there are numerous path errors, missing descriptions, broken code and I also believe the book was translated or at least it would seem that way.

What's different?
I have the Flash MX 2004 Beyond the Basics and have just purchased the Flash 8 Beyond the Basics.Is this the same book and are there any differences?I thumbed through one of the chapters and it was the same.
Exactly what basics is this book beyond?!
Aside from the ridiculously unproductive pace and tone of the book, there's nothing in it that isn't in Flash's included Help files.
Great for Professionals with Flash Experience
I highly recommend this book if you, like myself, are a professional in the media industry with experience in Flash.While the 'newbie' will benefit from this book, I find that knowing the terms, interface and minimal Actionscript syntax are very useful to understanding and succeeding with the tutorials in this book.

No circuit analysis at ALL
This book was used for an upper level graduate course at my university.Unfortunately, all of the homeworks used questions from this textbook, and we were not able to complete ANY of them using the analysis (or lack there of) covered in this text.We struggled to find answers in this book, but eventually found the answers using other textbooks or notes we gained from other professors and classes.
Lee's disdain for rigor is antithetical to the competent practice of engineering
Professor Lee's disdain for rigorous analysis, explicitly stated in numerous places in this book, sets a poor example for his students and the engineering community.

Perfect but aging companion to Discrete Time Signal Processing
This book does exactly what it purports to do - it teaches the reader how to perform signal processing tasks using Matlab. It starts out with signals and systems and moves on to the DTFT, the Z Transform, the DFT, digital filter structures including both IIR and FIR design, and finally covers some advanced topics in adaptive signal processing and communications. It even contains full-blown projects using Matlab on adaptive channel equalization, binary spread spectrum communications, and system identification. The reader should use another text such as Oppenheim's "Discrete Time Signal Processing" to get the theory, and come to this book on how to implement that theory in Matlab. The one drawback is that the book is older, so it is using Matlab 5. Also, another reviewer mentioned that much of the book is inaccessible to users who do not have the rather expensive signal processing toolkit at their disposal. Fortunately, thanks to the open source movement, this last problem has been solved. Octave, now on SourceForge, an open source code repository, has many of the matlab functions available for free that you need to do signal processing.
Excellent for review of DSP Mathematics....
Great companion book to "Understanding Digital Signal Processors" by Lyons and "Digital Signal Processors" by Hayes. I would recommend this book strictly for a companion book. It doesn't go into in-depth detail or explanation of Laplace, z-transforms, or Fourier Transforms but displays a good foundation for MatLab DSP routines.

Great as a Companion Book!!!
I am currently taking a intro to Digital Signal Processing at my university. I find this book is a very good complement to Proakis' Digital Signal Processing book. I have learned a lot about DSP using these two books. the aim of this book is to be a companion book to more traditional DSP books, it tries to be nothing more. In that regard, I believe the book excels. Get it as a supplement/companion to a traditional DSP book and you will learn how to do DSP with MATLAB. Highly recommended!!! ... Read more

Good for general Flash skills
This is a PeachPit Press "Visual QuickPro Guide"--similar to their "Visual QuickStart" training book series, but aimed at more experienced users. The series uses a task-based training approach, teaching skills through short step-by-step exercises. This approach has some major drawbacks for me, although this particular book seems to have dealt with some issues fairly well. My first complaint is that task-based training tends to focus too much on quick, "surface" results without really giving an understanding of what is happening and why it works. This makes it difficult to apply skills effectively in future situations, or to know when they ought to be applied. A task-based organization also makes it difficult to use a book as a reference, since information is dispersed throughout the exercises.
A great book for those learning actionscript
I really enjoyed this book. It goes in depth in covering the actionscript language for Flash 8, and starts off at a relatively slow pace so you don't feel overwhelmed. My only complaint is that it relies a lot (at least in the beginning) on using the script assist mode which I think is a waste of time for those trying to LEARN actionscript. In it's defense, the book weans you off it as it goes along, and I can see someone with no actionscript experience finding that extremely helpful. Knowing a decent amount of actionscript before reading this, I found it a bit annoying but like I said, it fades out of that as the book goes on. Great for learning the newer way to code, and gives a good basis to really use Macromedia Flash to it's full potential. ... Read more

A Cook-Book of Mathematical Formulae
I cannot imagine that this book has been written by Van Trees. I was a fan of him after studying his 1st and third volumes during my MSc, but taking a course on Array Signal Proc. and Adaptive Array Sig. Proc. in the next one, i was ehgulfed in mathematics and only mathematics, with no intuitional background at all. The author only has given mathematics, not have grip on the theoretical concepts or may be he has failed to convey them. I will never tell anybody about this book for this course, its for sure.
Great academic reference - Practitioners: Use with caution!
This book is the fourth book in Dr van Trees' series "Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory". It relies extensively on volumes I and III (but not volume II), and the reader of volume IV will want to have volumes I and III available. Read more
