5-0 out of 5 stars Excellet handbook for system identification background
It's very very useful book for system identification specially newstarted, because of the fact that system identification is heavily related DFT, FFT, Spectral Analysis, Wiener-Khinchine relations and so on. Congratulations !!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great theoretical introduction to DSP
This book is a great theoretical introduction to DSP. Although its size looks intimidating and there is a lot of math, this book is very good for a beginner because firstly, the size of the book is due to numerous examples as well as clear and detailed explanations for most of the concepts and secondly, it is possible to skip over much of the math if you are so inclined and take away the gist of the section. This is the case in some of the more advanced topics covered which may be suitable for a second reading.
3-0 out of 5 stars Something is missing ...
This book was required for a graduate-level DSP course, but I found it quite insufficient for study without a VERY good set of classroom notes. There are mistakes in various equations throughout the text, little to no examples, and I have yet to find a solutions manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars noise
Kosko's latest book, Noise, wins on substance and writing style. This is popular science as it should appear. Kosko serves up surprisingly readable prose up front, and detailed footnotes at the end. Sure is refreshing to see that you can start anywhere in the text, then go deeper into the science at will by flipping to the back if you want the heavy artillery. I really enjoyed the chapter "White Noise ain't so White." Didn't know noise came in so many kinds and colors. Great read.
3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Pop science writing is a tough thing to do well and an even tougher thing to sell to the general public but it seems publishers have hit upon a recipe for creating a dumbed-down pop-sci book: take an interesting germ of an idea, whip it full of air with lots of quotations, redundant examples of any given phenomenon the author is trying to explain, pages of endnotes and an extensive bibliography (which sadly was not included in the Kosko book) and then slap a cool looking graphic on the front cover. Voila! an instant 300 page pop-sci book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Great
I think this book is great even for non-math people. In fact, I am not good at math at all. I read it a couple of times and figured out what the author wanted to say.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Balanced Review
Whoever reads the reviews for this book will note the polarity: people either think it's wonderful or it's horrid. I'll try to give a more balanced review here.1-0 out of 5 stars Uh, what on earth is this?
I don't own this book, and I haven't read this book, so I could be way off. But based on the two pages I read using Amazon's new "read the page" feature, from a mathematical/scientific perspective I wouldn't touch this with a 200' pole (for the record: I have 3 graduate degrees in physics and mathematics, including a PhD, so my opinion of this guy's methodology should carry some weight). The way he explains the mathematics and science reads like something I'd expect in an essay from a (not too bright) College Sophomore: lots of handwaving and meaningless analogy, hoping that you don't know enough about the subject (and most of his audience doesn't) to distinguish valid argument from snake-oil. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very physical book
I mean a very physical book in the sense that it takes all the matters with the point of view of physical insight. The treatment of bosons and fermions is quick clear and it seems like a sleight of hand trick. The interaction of matter and radiation is one, perhaps old fashion, complete source of actual calculus difficult to obtain in other sources. Other topics about perturbative calculations and feynman diagrams is also very clear and straightforward to the mater itself. I recommend the book to all students in the graduate level, thougth a very russian style is a must for the great style lovers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
This book gives a solid introduction to the simplest of gauge theories, that of the Abelian gauge field governing the interactions between photons and charged particles. The emphasis is on doing calculations, and so readers who need a more in-depth mathematical or "foundational" overview of quantum electrodynamics may be disappointed. Quantum field theory of course was not founded on the need for mathematical rigor in physics, but instead has its origins in reconciling quantum mechanics with the theory of special relativity. This reconciliation has sometimes been a rough road, and in many places employs some sophisticated but eccentric "trickery" on the part of the researchers. It is these tricks that are the most difficult to generalize, to the annoyance of mathematicians who want to put quantum field theory on a more rigorous mathematical foundation. But in spite of the use of these oddities quantum field theory is not magical, and has proven to be one of the most precise physical theories ever constructed. 5-0 out of 5 stars A COMPLETE BOOK ON QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS
This is the Volume 4 of the famous Course of Theoretical Physics by L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz. All serious students of theoretical physics must possess the ten volumes of this excellent Course, which cover in detail and rigour practically all the branches of theoretical physics. The Volume 4 treats the subject of quantum electrodynamics. It contains all of basic material on quantum electrodynamics and the whole of the theory of radiation. This book, although very dense, describes with clarity the large amount of topics contained in it and does not include topics not firmly established, such as the theory of strong and weak interactions. All physicists specialized in quantum electrodynamics must possess this remarkable book. A superb book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Optical System Design
This is the exact book i needed. It is an excellent summary of optical principles, and their utilization in optical systems. The design examples are great for illustrating the underlying principles. The level is great for professionals (as a review), or for anyone wanting to learn the principles of optics design. I highly recommend this book, there are lots of references for deeper study. This would be an excellent textbook for a class in optical design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical words of wisdom for optics
Fischer gives me good advice that I can look up in a book. For example, I found answers about diffraction efficiency in diffractive optics, and a lens design case study about digital camera lenses. I also enjoyed the bloopers section. This information will help me do my job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reprint this book!
I used this book for an Array Signal Processing course. The book was very easily understood and complemented the professors coverage very nicely.I have read additional sections of the book and continue to be impressed withits readability and thorough coverage. Unfortunately I had to go throughthe Prentice-Hall print on demand service to get a compy of the text. paperbacks don't last as long and the price was still fairly high.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic textbook on array signal processing
Array signal processing is a fairly new topic in communications and signal processing. This textbook provides broad and deep coverage on this attractive field. Well-written and highly readable makes this book aninvaluable resource for both students and engineers. Since only the basicmaterials can be found in this book, you may need to find newly publishedpapers/books to see the latest development on this field. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
This book looks perfect on paper. The subject matter is important, it talks about many practical concepts, the cover is cute, etc. But trying to read this book I was very disappointed. The author has just cut and pasted some well-known ideas but doesn't explain anything clearly. Despite knowing the subject I found it painful to follow.I wanted to throw the book away after reading a few sections, but I kept telling myself "it can't be that bad, the material is fine, let me give it another chance". But the book is that bad! It is no excuse that this is a "handbook". There are many books that are not textbooks that do a great job explaining things.I feel sorry for anybody who is trying to learn by reading this book. If you are a beginner read Howard Johnson's classic "Black Magic" book. If you are more advanced read Clayton Paul or books on Microwave design. 4-0 out of 5 stars OK, but missing something
So far it has been useful in my designs. They seem to be better and I am sure the book has helped with certification. It has some very useful information.Unfortunatly, it does not have much supporting information or theoretical proofs.Perhaps this helps the non-math oriented user, but I can't imagine why a non-math oriented user would need such a book or what such a person would be doing designing for EMC.As an engineer, I don't take things on face value without understanding of why.The lack of general theory also makes it difficult to extend the information provided to areas not covered in the book.In short, I'd like to know a bit more about why.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for a lot of EMC/EMI pains
I got this book because the boss said to find something to help resolve the FCC/CE and other world EMI/EMC compliance issues we have, and it was instantly used and had the answers we needed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book CD and supporting web page is first rate
My only complaint is that some of the algebra should be worked out with a few more intermediate steps. The worked out homework problems are fabulous and sooo plentiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I think this book is absolutely outstanding. I don't understand any of the negative comments. The cd that comes with the book is indispensble. It provides example after example. I actually bought schaum's outline of dsp as well, but because of all the examples on the cd (they are handwritten) I don't even have a need to refer to the outline.
1-0 out of 5 stars A horrible attempt.
This is probably the worst textbook that I have used in the past two years. The book makes a lot of basic concepts seem very difficult and a lacks the proper examples to even explain what the problems at the end of the chapter are asking. The wording is very boring and tends to put the reader to sleep- making the poor explanation of concepts even worse. The authors jump around and often fail to define terms or use them before they are explained. The index has proved to be worthless in many of these instances. There are a lot of problems that I do not believe could be solved by a new edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a bible book to learn Gibbs sampler and simulated annealing
This is absolute a bible book for any person who want to learn Gibbs sampler and simulated annealing seriously. The format of this book, though full of mathematical equations, is very self-evident and concise. Nothingis missing and nothing is redundent. It is an enjoyable journey to followthe logic and principle in this book, with all your attention in. There arefull of in-depth discussion in all aspect of the Gibbs sampler, simulatedannealing, from the visiting scheme to cooling schedule, and parallelalgorithms. The references are excellent too. The author seems to have readall publications till 1995 about this topic and give an excellent detailedand in-depth survey in his book.At the end of your reading, you wouldhave love the mathematical form the author used. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Video Blogging and Podcasting
If you want to get into Video Blogging and Podcasting this is the best book on the market today.Covers every aspect in detail while still making it all seem easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide to Podcasting I have read yet
I work for Loyola Marymount University. We recently decided to make all lectures available via Podcasts. I went searching for books on the subject in order to find a solution for the school. This book was by far the best book on the subject. It even gave us some ideas for video blogging that we hadn't previously considered. Without the precise and coherent coverage given to Podcasting in this book I doubt we would have a solution even half as good. Thanks to the authors for their great book. It has been invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The nitty gritty
This hands-on guide is great for nailing down the nitty gritty of podcasting.Sure, there's nothing to it; you can make a podcast in a night. But then, once it's launched, there are SO many things to consider and so many ways to expand it.This is what makes casting a blast!

This is a great, practical guide to EMI testing and troubleshooting.Includes basic fixes, utility of those fixes to resolve observed issue(s), and estimates regarding the improvement those fixes might provide. It also includes a section on in-house, "confidence" testing (without shelling out for test chamber and all of the expensive test equipment... though you'll still need some)
5-0 out of 5 stars Good overall book
This book is by no means the definitive guide to EMC.The advance reader seeking such a book should consult Clayton's R. Paul book (Intro {yea right} to EMC).Nonetheless, for what it is, it is outstanding. The author covers in a general and simplified format a wide array of topics. What I most liked about the book was that the author address installations and other non-PCB related EMI issues.Basically, issues not covered by similar books that have a tendency to address only the PCB and its related IO. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PLL design/jitter management
I own both editions of this book. The 2003 edition of this Book is an effective design tool for SONET jitter filter design as it applies to reference clocks in transponders &SERDES.The digital PLL design discussion is most applicable to modern CDR/clock regenrator applications where there is not much info. available form IC vendors. The design software CD is quite useful for circuit design optimization over temperature.

2-0 out of 5 stars Check for error
I am studying Phase Lock Loop. I am current studying 3 books at the same time because I can verify the correctness of the book and get different point of view. The other two are by Phase Lock Basics by William F. Egan and Phaselock Techniques by Floyd M. Gardner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent book
This is a well written book and is the perfect source if you need to understand and design a PLL. If you are designing an analog PLL, Digital PLL or software PLL this book has what you need. The CD rom that comes with the book provides a quick and easy way to get started, design the PLL and simulate its operation. Many authors tend fill their books with formulas and obscure references and convey very little understanding. Authors that possess both an understanding of a subject and an ability to communicate well can make the subject both easy and enjoyable to learn. Best is such and author. I would recommend this book to anyone who either wants to learn about PLLs for the first time or enhance his understanding. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice approach (for physicists)
If you studied Mathematical Physics or if you like the mathematical approach that physicists used to write their papers and lectures, it 's a pleasant book to understand wavelets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't know anything about Wavelet Analysis Start Here
I have examined most of the popluar books printed on the subject of Wavelet Analysis and this is the best book for those who want to understand what a wavelet is, where is comes from, and how is it is useful for performing Time Scale signal analysis. I strongly suggest starting with this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect
As others have stated, this book comes as close as you'll ever get to a single-source reference on image processing. But if I were ever going to shoot anything down in it, I'd say that a little more mathematical background on some topics (and maybe pseudocoded examples) would help. For example, in the satellite geometric correction section, only a very high level view is given yet this is a challenging topic that could use more depth.Geometric transformations in general could use more depth, e.g. camera calibrations or image warping/morphing/mapping to other projections for example.Another example would be the need for a little more depth on how to make slow algorithms fast ...like convolution multiplications for example.Sure, you could write out the multiplies and spot commonalities, then re-use results that appear in more than one subsequent equation and what not, but some exploration of matrix math and how to make it efficient would be nice. But again ...I'm picking at small things here, and if John's book covered everything that I'd like it to, then it would become 2 books, not one ...hey!Now THERE's an idea!A 2+ book set by John Russ that covers a broader range of topics and does so in greater depth! That's something that I'd pay for (and much better to read than Ballard & Brown)
5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Purchase
John C. Russ is also the developer of FoveaPro, a plugin for Photoshop that can perform many different thresholding steps on both color and grayscale images.
5-0 out of 5 stars the seminal work

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb and Outstanding
This is one of the graetest book on board design and its signal integrity. I purchased this book and could not put it down until I read it cover to cover. Superb explanation starting from general introduction, nature of resistance, capatitance and inductance effect on the board, Excellent explanation of differential signalling skin effect and optimizing on board decaps. What is outstanding in this book is that author gives fantastic references for further study. Chapter 10 is master piece describing modeling of decaps on the board and many manymore. Combine the material of this book with "Brain Young" book of " Digital Signal Integrity" you got it all. Barvoo...for this magnificent work. As an ASIC designer and signal integroty specialist, this book has helped me a lot. ... Read more
