4-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts, Ma'am
In the Introduction to the 'Strange Theory of Light and Matter' Feynman tells us that what he likes to talk about is the "part of physics that is known, rather than a part that is unknown." And he goes on to give us a thumbnail sketch, a "physicist's history of physics," which shows how physicist's, in their quest to describe the world, continually reduce a group of seemingly unrelated phenomenon to a single phenomenon. So heat and sound were found, thanks to Newton, to be reducible to laws of motion, while electricity, magnetism and light were reducible to Maxwell's electromagnetic wave. In this way physicist's explain the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars The shortest, clearest and "most physical" description of quantum theory without compromise in the accuracy
I had read a few books on quantium physics before, some are serious textbooks, and some are books for general readers, without even a single equation. This book, catagorized as the latter case, is the shortest, clearest and "most physical" description I've ever read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Whew! Worth the effort...
Feynman believed that if you truly understand a concept than you should be able to express it in a way that any educated person can understand it. Thus you have a smallish book (based on lectures) on some of the most obtuse subjects in physics in a way that is entertaining, readable, and understandable.

3-0 out of 5 stars adequate despite authors' fantastic claims
The authors can't stop joking and blowing their own horns about how wonderfully entertaining circuit analysis is, made all the more so by their brilliant take thereupon. The fact of the matter is that the text is laborious, representing the poor man's path through the material, so to speak. When I studied circuit analysis, we had scarcely finished loop and nodal analysis before plunging headfirst into Laplace transforms. Simply put, Laplace transforms are the way, the truth, and the life. They lay open the entire dissected form at one's feet. Why waste time with mounds of insoluble integro-differential equations? Why spin wheels with pretty phasor diagrams that offer no headway toward closed-form solutions? The student will have to invest years upon years in linear systems analysis from the classical control system theoretic perspective, so why not start sooner rather than later? And why, oh why, do Hayt and Kemmerly burden us with terminologic tomfoolery, viz., what is the natural response versus the forced response versus the steady-state response versus the fiddle-de-diddle response? Just solve the bloody thing with Laplace transforms, and never mind the nitpickety distinctions! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful yet buggy...
Fairly useful program for building logic circuits and getting a visual of timing aspects, but program seems too buggy to totally recommend.I only bought it because it was required for a class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent digital simulation software for Windows
If you have access to a Windows machine (Windows 2000/XP/NT 4.0) this is excellent software to learn digital concepts and simulate digital circuits. It's also a pretty decent schematic editor for simple circuits although I'd recommend DesignWorks Lite/Pro from Capilano Computing (capilano.com) as a better editor. LogicWorks software was originally developed on and for the Macintosh OS but version 5.0 doesn't support the Macintosh. For that there is LogicWorks 4.5 available directly from Capilano Computing ([...]) which supports MacOS 9 and X but doesn't include VHDL support.

5-0 out of 5 stars A significant improvement in a good system - - -
I have used LogicWorks4 in a computer design class with fair results - (very good for small jobs - starts to get shaky with a thousand gates or so).

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, careful, well written.
After having used a half dozen books on the topic of synthetic aperture radar signal processing, this is the best. The authors are very careful with their explanations and derivations, and keep their discussions within the subject context. Other books don't do this, and the details of SAR processing can become confusing to the novice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in SAR, despite the very high price tag.

5-0 out of 5 stars "MORE Gadgets" better than first book
The first Electronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius book had devices that were a bit more sci-fi and cool, but although the information was interesting, not many are going to actually be able to build any of them, as parts will be expensive and hard to find. This second GADGETS book actually has a few circuits that you could actually build with parts that are more available.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting projects - but not for the unsupervised teen
Mr. Iannini continues the tradition he began in his first "Electronic Gadgets" book by offering up more than a fair share of laser devices. For this reason alone I don't think it is a good idea for your high schooler to play around with building the devices in this book unsupervised. Then there are the devices such as the "Marx Generator", which is a clever way of charging a number of capacitors in parallel, then discharging them in series. Originally described by E. Marx in 1924, Marx generators are probably the most common way of generating high voltage impulses for testing when the voltage level required is higher than available charging supply voltages. Again, this is another high voltage device which along with the Tesla coil and 400K volt DC generator can be potentially dangerous. The third category of projects that require adult supervision are those that invade the personal space/privacy of others - i.e. adults should always be on hand to explain why it is not OK to nauseate, confuse, and snoop on others for the purpose of learning electronics. The projects are interesting, but the reader/hobbyist should be an adult who is already knowledgeable of electronics and electronic construction techniques. The instructions in this book are not detailed enough for the novice. Also, the price tag on most of the devices is greater than $100, so they are not cheap either. Finally, and most importantly, the reader should have a penchant for safety. Thus if you want to get your teenager interested in electronics via interesting "cool" projects, and you are already knowledgeable yourself and willing to do full-time supervision of the construction, this is probably a good book over whichthe two of you can both learn and bond. Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Neophyte Experts like me
Houdini is vast, but easily knowable.I know a chunk of Houdini's capacity, having used it and its predecessor, PRISMS professionally for fifteen years or so.The richness of Houdini always allows for one's eyes to be freshly opened to its potential, however.(Jebus, I *wish* my dog would stop farting! - Man, that's foul!)Sorry...What was I saying?Oh yeah...I left my copy of the book at work, and now I'm trying to find some of its content here at Amazon, so I thought I'd take a moment to say that *this* old FX god finds Will Cunningham's book, "The Magic of Houdini" to be accessibly written, chock full of useful stuff, and right now, inconveniently indespensible. [UPDATE]I went to work just to get the book, and it told me what I needed to know, and now I can model that metacarpal like nobody's business!Yay Will!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Houdini ever
Well, the only book on Houdini, but coincidently, this book is an excellent resource for all levels interested in Houdini. Information is clear and the examples are well constructed and useful. It does really scratch the surface of the program, but Houdini would be impossible to teach in one volume.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book proved to be a great disappointment. I am reasonably knowledgeable about sensors and tracking, but I needed to "take my game to the next level" for some work I was doing. I thought this book might be the vehicle to help me. It wasn't. It is at once overwhelming and underwhelming. It is basically a massive literature survey. Granted, that can be of value -- indeed, merely assembling such a massive tome is a truly prodigious feat. Still,it totally missed the mark as far as I am concerned. What I needed was an in-depth treatment of the fundamentals of multiple target tracking that would provide me with sufficient basic understanding to allow me to solve some difficult, but straightforward generic tracking problems. This book isn't it. Instead, the book was more like a huge cookbook that contained many recipes, but didn't help me learn to cook. The Table of Contents was actually a dead giveaway. It is 18 pages long, and many individual sections covering very complex topics are remarkably short -- 1-2 pages. That should have warned me that I wasn't going to find what I was looking for here. The book is also hard to read. Because it covers such a potpourri of topics, the notation is inconsistent, the acronyms are even more annoying than usual, and equations are plucked out of the references without sufficient context to make them "user friendly." As a result, using the book is exceptionally frustrating, and its sheer size makes the effort daunting. This is the probably the longest and certainly the most expensive technical book I have ever purchased. It wasn't worth it to me, and I would urge others to think twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Tracking
A complete survey of modern tracking methods. Basic tracking fundamentals as well as advanced tracking concepts are explained with simple examples that are easy to follow and understand. In many instances I have gone to this book to understand things that were incomprehensible in journal articles. The book covers the basics of sensors, target dynamics, Kalman filtering, multiple hypothesis tracking, data fusion, reasoning schemes, sensor resource management, and more.My favorite chapter is the last:Detection and Tracking of Dim Targets in Clutter. If you are involved with tracking this book will be a valuable companion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive tracking reference
This book covers all the basic methods in tracking and data association as traditionally used in applications such as radar, robotics, image processing, signal analysis, ... The book provides a very solid introduction to the different topics of sensor analysis, characterisation of uncertainty, methods for single and multi target tracking, etc. The topic of sensory fusion is also well covered in terms of different approaches to integration (MAP; Evidential Reasoning, Bayes,...). 3-0 out of 5 stars Erudite and encyclopedic but extremely expensive
I've used Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties.I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Needed Book
Digital photographers don't pay enough attention to color management. This book is exactly what is needed to remedy that lack. You'll find all the basics here, and enough in-depth information to start you on the road to calibrating and fine-tuning your digital equipment to accurately reproduce the colors you see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What You need
This is exactly what I was looking for; it gives a quick in-and-out overview of colour management, with detailed information about calibration and profiles. Other books on this topic are twice the size, which I don't think is necessary for most people.
4-0 out of 5 stars Colour your world.
I have borrowed this book from my local library on several occasions and found the book invaluable so I decided it was time to have my own copy. An excellent book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars READ IT BEFORE REVIEWING PLEASE
my five stars are just to counteract the single star from the idiotic reviewer who gave the book one star w/o even bothering to read it. i haven't read this volume yet either, but i just ordered it and it's on its way; i'm certain i won't be disapointed. i'm a programmer and an artist and i use GP effectively to evolve forms both sonic and visual. just because you know your field(s) doesn't mean you can't benefit from a knowledge of evolutionary algorithms, quite the contrary. we have koza and friends to thank for a lot of inspirational work. i for one enjoy the interaction that i have with my algorithms, and since i'm the fitness function, forms crop up which never would have if either i or the machine were working alone. apologies for being guilty of the same crime as said reviewer but i feel in this case it's justified.

5-0 out of 5 stars And the future is...
Genetic programming is like a new Big Bang in computer universe.4-0 out of 5 stars Why Should You Buy This Book???
Why this book, when there are several shorter books on GP, and its principle author, John Koza, has written two other, more general and equally voluminous books on GP? This book addresses how to evolve program architecture, that's why! Living organisms didn't grow arms and eyes through simple mutation. It required more subtle genetic operators. Traditional genetic operators (as used in genetic algorithms) may be sufficient for evolving solutions to optimization problems where the structure if not the specifics of each solution is pretty much the same. But to effectively evolve program structures, you need architecture altering genetic operators. This book provides motivations in computer science, foundations in biology, and explanations in English. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for educational use
This might be a good book for teachers looking for material in their classes gamedesign or gamedevelopment. It may also be a good book for selfstudy, if you have the discipline to do the exercises. You need to have played a lot of the classic videogames though, otherwise you might not be able to do the exercises, which are mostly about thinking about gamedesigns and making little designs or design alterations on existing games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not programming, Not Graphics, Overall Game Design
Few people realize just how big a business digital gaming has become. Think of it this way: It's bigger than the domestic box office of the film industry. The amount of time spent playing games by young people now exceeds everything but television in time spent on entertainment. The main factor driving the development of the new extremely powerful computers is gaming, slower machines are capable of handling almost all office tasks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely practical and useful
I bought first edition of this book 7 years ago and have used it A LOT. I just bought the 2005 edition. I am interested in the nanometer CMOS design techniques and "indirect compensation" (how they are getting the ns settling times for the op-amps).
1-0 out of 5 stars below expectation

5-0 out of 5 stars Book's Problem Solutions and Figures
