Disappointed with this Title
As with every other IT professional I know, I have difficulty finding the time to read every technical book that I would like, and have a fast growing backlog of material to read. Because of this, I expect the material I read to be succinct and on topic. I had a need to obtain my CNE credential due to its relevance to my present job assignment, and since this is Novell's official study guide, I opted to use this book for study... Needless to say, I was disappointed.
eDirectory section is the hardest
Novell continues to update and expand its network management software, and this book reflects the latest 2004-5 version, Netware 6. It is aimed primarily at those sysadmins who, for professional reasons, need to obtain a Novell certification. This being Version 6, you can see in the bulk of the book that Novell has built out a tremendous amount of material.

An incomplete work by Clarke.
Having learned most of what I know about Netware 4.11 from Clarke's books, I took a leap and bought both the admin and CNE books that he authored for Netware 5.1. I was disappointed. The books lack the anecdotes that break up the monotonous material, and it's evident that Clarke wasn't enthused with writing this book. Disappointed too!
I started seriosly my study with this book.The good one is, the style he (the author)talk to us in the book, I really like it! Disappointed - -
After passing NetWare Administration 5.1 using the companion CNA 5.1 book as my primary study resource, I was hoping for a similar experience with this book.I am finding that while the CNE 5.1 book does cover much of the material for the remainder of the CNE examinations, it is a bit light in some critical areas.I have expanded my studies with another CNE series from Novell Press, a set of third party CBT's, and even broke down and took the official Advanced Administration 5.1 course.I'm not at all certain that I would have passed Advanced Admin or NDS Design if I had trusted just this book to get me prepared.Read more

Excellent resource
I used this book and Self Test software together to pass the test on Oct 22nd, just in time for the deadline. I liked this book better than his past super hero comic strip CNE guides. He covered the topics completely and provided good lab scenarios that were useful for the exam.

Read it once, passed the exam
Since the purpose of this book is to teach the reader what is necessary to upgrade their Novell CNE 5 certification to a Novell CNE 6 the review is rather simple and to the point.I read through it, skimmed through it a second time, looked at the included CD and reviewed the questions at the end of each chapter, took the exam and passed it the first time.That makes it pretty clear that all the information is in here to pass the exam, all you have to do is study it.Since it made upgrading my certification a snap I would have to give it a very high recommendation to anyone seeking to do the same.

Exercise caution when using this book as a reference
I've never read a technical book that would contain so many inaccuracies and even false information, not to mention numerous minor incorrect or doubtful statements. Read more

Not helpful at all
I received this book as a free offer from McGraw-Hill a few years ago when I was new to networking.I learned very little from it.I am so glad I only paid for the shipping and handling.If you are new to the field andneed a good study guide, don't buy this one!

A rip off
This book doesn't even deserve 1 star at all. What a waste of money and paper. The authors have no clue on what it is meant by "Study Guide"

The book is about 900 pages and it wasted 233 pages for introduction of CNA/CNE, the cert, and the advantage of the cert, etc.For 4.x Administratin, it only provide 22 pages (and there is 16 pages forQuestions).Do you think that good studying content can be included in 40pages?? Uneven
I used this book and the full CNE Study Guide as my primary sources to study for these two CNE exams. I found the Network Technologies section to be very good. It contained everything I needed to know, and a very few things I didn't, to pass the test comfortably. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for the Service and Support section. It covered all the topics, but in nowhere near enough detail. I passed that test, but only barely, and I believe I passed it based more on luck and personal experience than based on the material in this book. You can rely on this book for the Net Tech test, provided you memorize all the information which is very densely packed, but for the S&S test you will be much better off getting additional material.

As good as the other books in the series
I used this book once again for the Service and Support test passed reading only this book.This series is designed to be like a review but it does a good job of giving you enough to pass the tests on their own.It does the job of the main study guide from the same author but without all of the bull that he puts into the other book.I actully passed this test and Zenworks the same day and I am now a CNE. I know it is hard to believe me with this claim but it is true. Thank you Mr. Clarke IV, you did a good job with this series. good study notes - covers exam material
I'm not sure what the problem was with "A reader from San Antonio, Tx". I found this book to be a great help to both the network & the support exams. You *must* remember that it's designed to augment full course material (novell white book or the Novell Study Set - ISBN: 076454554X i think) - it is NOT for study on its own.Read more

Descent, but not really standalone
This book was descent.It covered most of the material on the CNA exam.I have not yet taken any CNE tests.The disks left some to be desired and the book actually left a few things out.I don't recomend this book asyour only resource for the CNA or CNE exams. ... Read more

Great for those looking to Update
I used this book for the NetWare 4.x to NetWare 5 Update test. I found it very helpfull for that purpose. I was already proficient in previous versions of NetWare so I can't comment on it from the "newbie" perspective. For those looking to update, this book with a package from SelfTest Software will make a good combo.

Well-written and easy to understand
This book is a great explanation of Netware. It's the best of the printed materials I've seen on the topic (Novell's own study kit book is horrible by comparison). I just passed the CNA exam, and felt well-prepared, though I agree with other reviewers that you should always use more than one study aid. The one weakness of this book is that the questions at the end of the chapters are not much like the actual test, though in all fairness, it would be impossible to simulate the test in a written format. I also used Self Test Software's exam simulation, which was awesome--just like the real thing.

Never use just 1 source
Although I believe Sybex sells good quality books, I would like to issue a little word of advice.Never use just one source when going for a certification.For my CCNA certification I used both the CCNA Sybex book, and I was in the Cisco Networking Academy, for My Novell CNA certification, I used CBT and the Sybex book.No matter if a book is a 5 star book or not, your more likely to learn something if you read it twice from differant sources and cover everything. ... I loved this book
I loved this book and I love the whole Exam Cram series.All the certification tests I have passed can be directly credited to the help this series.It is true that this particular book has several typographical/editorial errors.This can be a little frustrating at times.I subsequently loaned this book to two other individuals that have passed their certification tests with this book's assistance.The consensus among us is that, in a peculiar way, the typographical/editorial errors force you to verify your understanding of the materials.If you are unaware of these errors, your grasp of the subject matter is simply too loose to attempt to take the exam.It is nice to know that you understand the material even when the book is wrong.These typographical/editorial errors are a very small part in proportion to the comprehensive coverage and testing contained in this book.I would highly recommend this text to all parties interested in becoming certified.I have great faith in the whole Exam Cram series and will continue to use them in my test preparation.

A Disapointment to the Exam Cram Series
This sould not be a tool you use to pass the exam! Very poor actually - Not to be trusted for exam success
I thought the Exam Cram for NT Server 4 was the key to my success in getting my MCP, so I thought the same would apply to an Exam Cram for Novell... Wrong!... This book has some good information in it, but it hasHUGE holes in the presented information which is hopeless for the exam...The sample tests are nothing like the actual, and the book has manymistakes in it... Initially I read this book along with David JamesClarke's CNA Study Guide (which is excellent)... This book only confused mebecause it seems to follow it's own study path which didn't flow with theClarke book... The Clarke book was written specifically for the Novell examand is authorised by Novell... That should say it all... Read more

it should get a negative rating
This is the worst networking book I have ever read. There is nothingworthwhile in the book. In fact the authors best advice is to go and takethe Novell certified courses. If I had the time to do that I wouldn't havebought the book!

Waste of time and money
I'm amazed at the glowing reviews I've read on this page. This book was a complete waste of my time. It offers no test preparation whatsoever, so prospective CNEs should shop elsewhere. The first 8 chapters of the bookare space-wasting drivel that have nothing to do with learning this OS orpreparing for these tests. The chapters that claim to cover specific testsinstead seem to cover the more obscure facets of NetWare.I have passed 4of the 6 tests needed to become a CNE and I have done so without anyassistance from this book. I suggest people read the CNE Study Guide forNetWare 5 by David James Clarke which is admittedly very corny and readslike an advertisement for Novell at times but is still packed with way moreusable information than this book has. This book was a big disappointment.

Now this is why I review books.
The only thing in computer that remains constant is the fact that nothing remains constant. Novell's latest NetWare 5 is the perfect example. This book is too padded with usless quotes!
This book has way too many analogies and usless quotes.Lack of screen shots and step by step instructions. This book could have been half it's size without it's long drawn out analogies!I would recommend buying"USING NetWare 3.12" by Que.A much better book, to the pointand has step by step instructions!

More of a CNA guide than CNE guide.
This is an excellent guide to Novell basics and to the material covered on the CNA exam, but after that, it is of dubious value. It covers some of the material on the Advanced Admin and Install exams, but there is precious little on the others. (Actually, I believe this one is only supposed to cover five of the seven exams; the other two are in Mr. Clarke's "Core Technologies" exam.) Good book
This book is comprehensive and has quality information.However, I felt that the author stretched the analogies way too far, the tests were not comprehensive or useful (a CROSSWORD PUZZLE? sheesh), and the testing software turned out to be useless after two or three times - the software tests do not change: the same questions come up over and over, and with three or four tries all (few) questions are memorized.Check out the New Rider's Publishing books on getting your CNE before getting one of these - the tests are better, and no miserable analogies. ... Useful book.....worked for me.
Another strong book in the exam cram series. Remember that the only purpose of these books is to assist you in passing the tests, and this book works well in that area. I don't think you can pass the test based only on this book though. I used it in conjunction with two other books and some practice tests. Passed the test first try. Most economical way to continue as CNE
This is the one book that you could count on in getting your CNE update. I read this book page to page, follow the exercise through and read the suppliment material from Novell website to pass the CNE test with only 1month preparation. I will recommend this to anyone who is looking intoupdate his CNE. It's the most economical way !

Alot of info - to the point
Grein/Brown's book provides good study guide material, is to the point, but is not very good as a hands-on tutorial. I started with this book, but didn't feel ready. Played with the software, purchased a software self testand Clarke's book (liked the tutorial layout, but not the writing style orlength).Read more

Dorothy has clicked her ruby red slippers
At the time I purchased and read Dorothy's book, I was sweating out the 529 exam and the tough requirements Novell Education had placed on a CNI maintaining his/her certifications. A fellow CNI in Tucson, well mannered,clean cut, sharp Novell troubleshooter and once a 'fellow instructor' hadjust emailed me that he had failed to pass the 529 exam at the CNI level.(This was the FIRST time this guy had EVER failed a NetWare test, aftertaking 50 plus exams!) Needless to say, his comments about how unfairNovell Education was, about the tracking down of 'missing' material toaddress test questions appearing 'out of the blue' and his uncomfortableposition of being scheduled as a 529 class instructor being in very much indoubt as the class date approached, did not do much for my own 529 testpreparation. For experenced engineers only
I found this book only helpful if you have an indepth knoledge of Novell 4.11.I took so long on my studies of Novell 4 that when I took the 50-640 test, I failed it because of quite a few topic that were dismissed as"known" or in other refence material.

Written for a 9 year-old!
The amount of fluff in this book is rather annoying.(ZEN, InfoBahn, NW5 rules the world, etc. etc. etc.)Clarke, just write about the technical aspects of the NOS and skip the childish attempts to entertain the reader.The people reading this book are already CNE's wanting to update their cert to 5.x...they don't want, nor need your poor attempts at entertainment.Had the fluff been omitted from this book, it would be a nice little 300-350 page study guide (and had a few items not been overlooked).As it is, you find yourself skimming or skipping pages due to the annoying attempts at cuteness, and possibly missing an important detail in the process.Do yourself a favor and either buy another book or purchase CNEQUIZR...you'll learn more from that practice exam than you will from this book....

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK
This is by far THE WORST TECHNICAL BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.The reader isinsulted and treated as a child in some fictional playground where you areexpected to save the world with NW5 - along with the help of Einstein, DaVinci, and King Arthur.The religious zeal with which the author spellsout his vision for the planet is disturbing.Bluuuurgh!
