5-0 out of 5 stars Only book which consolidates Audio coding & Standards
This book describes the basic details and the Signal Processing behind the Audio compression. It also describes PQMF and MDCT in continuation which is rare in books. Almost all the standard audio codecs are described with comparisons. I am delighted to read the book. At least my search end with this book on this topic. After getting this book, I need not look into IEEE & AES papers. For Audio engineers working on this domain should read this book to have a complete picture and overview of the technology and the domain.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfying for a nerd like myself...
The book gives a good review of the historical development of audio coding standards with emphasis on ISO. Generally speaking it is well written, but the technical details as well as theoretical aspects are frankly, quite superficial; therefore it is not satisfying for a (proud) nerd like myself. If one's goal is to implement a program to handle the MP3 bitstream, for instance, then the book does not help. If one's goal is to design a new filter bank to improve the MP3 coder, then the book does not help either. However, it is recommended for beginners to get a flavor of the audio coding field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching the core mechanisms underlying digital audio codec.
For a long time in my school life and now as a audio engineer I look forward to this kind of book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Introduction To Text Retrieval Systems
A wonderful feature of this book spans out practicality for various topics including compresion algorithms and theory, document and imaging system and information retrieval. On my personal interest, the authors highlight a vast list of not only the theory but present it in a simple common sense logic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Information Retrieval
Managing Gigabytes is the best book out there on information retrieval. If you're interested in implementing your own IR system, there's nothing available that comes close to this book. But the book is good not just because it's the only one out there: the writing is excellent, the algorithms are presented clearly and explained well, and the coverage is thorough.Additionally, the coverage of compression algorithms is the best I've found in any book. All algorithms and pseudo-code in the book are presented clearly enough such that any competent programmer should be able to implement them.If all else fails, however, the free downloadable source code for the mg system can fill in any gaps.5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Thing Is: It's the Only One
This is the only book there is that will actually teach you how to build an information retrieval system (aka search engine). It discusses all the algorithms and tradeoffs, and comes with free downloadable source code to experiment with. Some of the material is standard, but covered in more implementation detail here than anywhere else. Some of the material is novel: you won't find better coverage of compression unless you hand-assemble twenty research papers, and reverse-engineer them to figure out how they're implemented. But with "Managing Gigabytes", it's all here. (Although, after a particularly envigorating discussion of how to string together a bunch of techniques to compress their corpus and save a couple 100MB, I did a check and found you could buy 512MB of RAM for less than the cost of the book.Knowledge is Power, but sometimes a little cash is more powerful.)The only negative is that this book is not called "Managing Terabytes", as the first edition promised/threatened it might be.RAM and disk are cheap, but not that cheap, and for now terabytes (and sometimes petabytes) are managed only by NASA, Google, and a few others.I can't wait to see the third edition! ... Building Storage Networks is a very complete reference into storage. This book covers it all. If you know nothing about storage, by the time you get through the 590 pages you will have a complete knowledge of storage. 3-0 out of 5 stars SAN and NAS Beginnings
Nicely written material for the beginner to the SAN and NAS areas, but ultimately falls short of the depth that I was looking for in understanding SAN and NAS technologies.Covers the networking, protocols, and basic SAN and NAS architectures well.If you have a fairly good idea of the SAN and NAS solutions available today, than this book doesn't provide anything you haven't already been exposed. If your looking for a book that explains how and where SAN and NAS solutions might fit into your organization, than this is the book for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for anyone working with the details of JPEG
Created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, the JPEG standard defines a toolkit of processes for lossy and lossless encoding and decoding of continuous-tone still images. This guide, which includes the the complete text of the ISO JPEG standards DIS 10918-1 and draft DIS 10918-2, offers detailed information on the JPEG modes of operation, signaling conventions, and structure of compressed data. It also provides a general review of image-coding techniques, so it does not assume the reader has expert status in data compression and coding techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Book on Image processing
This is the book to have on the subject! It covers almost any aspect that you can think of in image/video processing. This is a MATH intensive book and it will not tell you how to directly implement any of its concepts in code. The author assumes that the reader will be able to do this on there own.Topics are very well explained, but sometimes I needed to reread a topic 3 or 4 times and go over the math a couple times to fully understand.Great book to have as an encyclopedia like resource on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for methods of image and video processing
There is a 2nd edition of this book that was published in July 2005, so all reviews earlier than that are referring to the first edition. Regardless, the second edition of this book is just as good as the first. There are many texts that do a good job of covering image processing, but few do such a good job of covering all of the aspects of video processing - motion detection and estimation, video enhancement and restoration, and video segmentation. There is an entire section on video compression which discusses the H.261 standard, wavelets and video compression, object-based video coding, and the various MPEG standards. There are also articles on video indexing and retrieval anda unified framework for video browsing and retrieval.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is one of the worst of books I have read
If one wants to learn jpeg2000, he can look for some papers and source codes which are better than this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Work
The author of this book is a genius. His work should be required reading for all. Definatly one of the great minds in our time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Know why you're buying this book
This book is quite good but any potential buyer should know exactly why he would buy it and if it really matches his expectations. Indeed, this book is hardly a helper in implementing jpeg2000, but more a reference book for highly skilled image processing professionals/researchers. It is divided in two parts: the first part is about general image processing topics and provide some explanation about the choices made for jpeg2000. It is the "theorical" part. The second part is about jpeg2000 itself. The latter could have been much more practical and better directed to implementors. In fact, I was thinking of this book being able to clarify some aspects of the norm that are quite blur, but I find the way it is written, even for the second part, overly complicated and scientifically oriented, not "engineering" oriented. Most of the topics are better explained in the norm itself than in this book, even if the latter is much more detailed. Clearly there is room for another book on the topic but this time directed to implementors, with less theory, less scientific notations, are more, much more, real world examples working on real bit-streams. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very goof book for starters
If you know very little about the technical aspects of file formats, and you want to write your own applications, then this is the book you are looking for.2-0 out of 5 stars Rating correction
Not helpful that the author reviews his own book and gives himself 5 stars! Before he did so, the average rating was 3.33 stars. Afterwards it became 3.75 stars. My rating aims to rectify matters. I have not, however, read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author Response
I thought I would respond to the negative comment regarding JFIF files. As the reader points out, the sample source code on the CD checks for the JFIF header. This reason for this is to be an educational excercise in file formats. As the reader points out, this causes the source code not to work with JPEG files from digital cameras that do not use the JFIF format. The difference between these formats is simply the use of APPn markers (essentially comments).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great textbook
This book has all the ingredients for a great textbook. It provides good theoratical background without going into unnecessary details, gives lot of discussion about applications, provides great exercise problems, and above all it has outstanding examples that makes some of the difficult concepts easy to understand.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good coverage
The best thing about this book is the coverage and organization of the material. Sayood covers a wide variety of compression topics without getting into the nitty gritty details of them all. Thats why its an "Introductory" book. This book is a valuable resource for those who want to know the basics of various compression techniques and can be used as a starting point for further details. Some topics like arithmetic coding are covered in more detail than others. The book is also organized nicely with mathematical foundations provided as and when necessary.

4-0 out of 5 stars diminishing returns?
We all want better compression. Yet surely the current JPG and GIF have taken us to the limit? Apparently not, if you read this book. There is still some slack that can be squeezed out of an image, if you use JPEG2000. Acharya gives you all the technical details. Where it would greatly assist your comprehension if you already knew about the discrete cosine transform and the current JPG standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars An undiscovered gem of compression algorithm details
This book covers a needed middle ground between the more formal books on the subject such as Sayood's "Introduction To Data Compression" and easy programmer-oriented books such as Nelson's "The Data Compression Book". This book is an encyclopedia of compression methods that briefly describes the technique of each method, along with any required math, and then shows the algorithm. Code is not shown in the sense that there are no CompressionAlgorithm.cpp files included that you can lift without knowing what you are doing. However, the algorithm pseudocode is such that you should be able to translate any algorithm into code without much trouble. I know that this book has helped me. I would suggest that any true student of data compression methods use this book in conjunction with Sayood's book. Use Sayood to get the mathematical background that you need. Then use this book to read the details of a particular algorithm in plain language. This book is truly an undiscovered gem for most in the field and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete - No Useless Filler
This is by far the most all-encompassing and thorough data compression book I have ever come across. Every method covered is carefully explained in great detail leaving no doubt as to how to implement it into your various projects. This is not just some ho-hum discussion of existing software and how to copy the coding of it, as some other texts turn out to be. For once, an author did not clutter his pages of pure compression information with mountains of proprietary source code or over abundant mathematical nonsense. This book is the real deal for true data compression enthusiasts looking to follow along in real world usages and research new methods. If your sole purpose is to draw up a statistical analysis of a particular algorithm, grab your calculator and go someplace else to write your term paper. To copy someone else's source code, search the net. For those of you interested in getting in there and really tackling modern compression methodology and adapting it to whatever your needs and desires may be, this is the only book you will ever need.
3-0 out of 5 stars Many algorithms included, but no in-depth discussion
This book explains lots of algorithms, the author tries to give you a brief overview on each of them.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yahoo!Got a good one here
My team is working on H.264 video over a MPEG-2 transport stream packet. This book helps a lot on learning systems timing, which is hard to find from any books. I don't understand why so many books discuss about MPEG video, but very few tells about systems timing.Where are those "Professors" ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
The content is original, which cannot be found in other books with the same topic. However, I think the book is overpriced.

5-0 out of 5 stars I think it is a good book
A good book ... many sections are new to me ( I didn't find them in other books )... interesting topics ... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars give us more information
searshing for books is very amazing in Amazone.com but i wish if we (customers )have more information about autherswhere do they teach; thier email andsome things like that so we could make our desecion

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for implementors
If you want to implement a compression scheme fast easily, or to havegeneral knowledge about compression algorithms this is a very good book. Ifyou really want to deeply understand compression algorithms, to have somekind of insight about them, and to know about the best algorithms availabletoday - this book is has less benefit (understatement).

3-0 out of 5 stars a book which has its positive and negative sides...
PROs: 1. It is one of very few books on data compression available on the market. 2. Description of the IDEAS of compression techniques is very well written. 3. The books comes with the C code for most algorithms. 4. Fairlywide scope of data compression techniques is presented.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but marred by poor printing
This book appears to be a "print on demand" style book which manifests itself, in this case, as a poor quality hardcover. Some of the text is laughably bad, the few images near the end look like they are snapshots from a black and white TV screen, but most bothersome is the "muddy" look of the text. The price seems a bit steep for such a poor quality print. That said, the actual content is very comprehensive. One of the authors (Gray) is co-creator of the now commonplace LBG (Linde Buzo Gray) VQ algorithm. Fortunately, the quality of the content shines through the terrible printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete book on vector quantization
An essential book for researchers and engineers working on vector quantization. It provides a (nearly) exhaustive description of the available VQ methods, with analyses and discussions. The book concentrateson VQ, so don't buy it if you're not interested in that only. Most mathtools explained. Could be a little bit outdated on some aspects ->things are moving fast in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book for students and engineers.
Many useful concepts of digital compression can be found in this book.It is easy to read and understand, especially for students and engineers in EE. ... Read more
