Not really for beginners
I was a bit disappointed with this book. I followed many of the instructions to the tee as best as I could understand the "language" and it was difficult to follow. Not to mention, you had best know where all the tools are before embarking on the lessons. I can see this becoming a great reference book as I become more developed with CS2, but for a beginner I would not recommend it.

Common sense introduction to the software
I bought this book to supplement the textbook I am using for a class in Adobe Illustrator.Personally I think this book should replace that confusing manual.Like mathematics textbooks, most software instructional materials make the same errors.They assume that the reader already has a foundational knowledge of the subject, they fail to describe techniques in a true step by step fashion, and they subtitute jargon for plain English.
Mostly satisfied- despite dissapointing performance by Amazon.
First things first: This Ebook is not compatible with any handheld device.After many a wasted hour trying to get the ebook to work on a Palm, I called the publisher, who informed me that PDA features were blocked on this book.It took me several emails to finally get Amazon to acknowledge that the book was not "Handheld Compatible". Months later they still have not corrected the website, so I am left to assume they really don't care.

Great book!
I use this book as a day-to-day HLSL reference, it's so much quicker and more efficient than finding information online...
Excellent !!!
The book starts with short introduction and pipeline overview giving an overall picture of how vertex and pixel shaders interact, and how data flows between them and the hardware. Next, it introduces DirectX High-Level Shading Language (HLSL) and Microsoft's Effect Files Framework. Then author starts teaching you how to implement basic lightning models (Lambert, Phong, Blinn-Phong) and advanced ones (Cook-Torrance, Oren-Nayar, Ward, Ashikhmin-Shirley). The book also covers more advanced topics (Environment Cube Mapping, Reflection and Refraction, Projective Texture Mapping, Shadow Mapping, Shadow Volumes, Geometry Images) and cutting-edge techniques like Displacement Mapping, High Dynamic Range Lighting or Parallax Mapping. The author shows common problems arising during implementation of presented techniques and explains how to deal with them. Each chapter comes with a few example programs which are as simple as possible. You will also learn from this book how to optimize your shaders for different shader models.
Has EVERYTHING about DirectX 9 shaders
This is a book that gets straight to the point.It covers a wide variety of rendering topics relevant to vertex and pixel shader programming, all with clear example code.The topics are covered in enough detail for the reader to create their own great 3D effects.The introductory sections are well structured and serve as a valuable reference for HLSL and shader assembly.On top of all of this, the coverage of new shader models vs_3_0 and ps_3_0 is the best I've seen.Five stars! ... A Comprehensive Disappointment
I don't know what's going on with this book.The prime difference between version 6 and version 7 is the inclusion of Adobe Lifecycle Designer.This book says virtually nothing on such an important area.It does little to address database connections.
Useless for Designer Forms
I bought this specifically for information about using the new LiveCycle Designer application that comes with Acrobat Professional to create interactive PDF forms. All of the information in this book (Chapters 26-29) is wrong about that app--none of the dialog boxes match, or are even close, and the program doesn't work the way it's described. I'm guessing that Adobe changed it after the book was written.

The Childrens Bible
A bible for the inexperienced with acrobat.. If you have never opened up the program, than I could see how this might be considered a bible.Just like any childrens bible is compared to a regular bible.

Not quite "Comeplete"
The guide does a wonderful job of taking you through the game as well as giving you the 'secret' object locations.I would have given it a 4.5/5 if that were on option.There are some things that you must read in the game manual (the biggest one is to use the "grip" button (E on the PC version) when Lara does not have a strong grip on a ledge...if you do not you fall...always).The book shows the moves in the PS2/Xbox controls and not the PC (generally speaking).No question about it though I had used the guide in a few spots to continue the game.

Great book; a must for engineers and scientists alike
Kalyanmoy Deb has put together a great summary of the state of affairs in multiobjective genetic algorithms. Should you be an engineer or a scientist involved in the optimization of any design of sizeable complexity, you should read this book and become familiar with the techniques that have evolved over the last decade into powerful methods of optimization. This book is in many many ways bridging the gap from Michalewicz's and Fogel's book ("How to solve it") to the more modern era of this field (eg late nineties up to now...). So whereas those two authors never really considered multiobjective genetic algorithms, Deb plows through with the great expertize of a (perhaps even "the") leading researcher in that domain. This is a great book of _receipes_ with the level of details necessary to make use of them. It's a "how to" book; this is the one you have cracked open on your desk while you're hard coding it all up. However, it's not very well written with the prose being very terse and basically quite unengaging. But so what! In some sense yes perhaps, but Michalewicz and Fogel made a point that one can write technical litterature that one can also read. Perhaps they went overboard... in any case, Deb's book is about algorithms so who cares about whether the book puts you to sleep and it can do that, unfortunately. Apart from the unengaging style and the paucity of depth in the examples scope, the real problem with the book is not with the book itself, it's with the field of multiobjective optimization based on evolutionary methods. It's fairly evident that there is not much of any sort of fundamental understanding available at this time in support of why evolutionary techniques do work well, and they do, sometimes... If this understanding is available, you won't find it in Deb's book. If you are like me though, you won't care all that much really so long as the techniques are efficient and presented in a way that make them useable, and that's done right... But on the whole, it's a little unsatisfying because one's left with a panoply of various techniques and ways to define operators and representations but there is no insight given on which one might be best or how to craft them to particular situations. There is a lot of so-'n-so in reference this and that did it like this and it seems to work well there, however... The reason for this state of affairs is, of course, that nobody has a real clue, yet... But that is _not_ Deb's fault and this is not why, as a user, I'm not rating his book a full 5 stars. In some sense it could be rated as high as that but I thought the presentation was rather unengaging and not with all the breath and depth it could have had. So it's a 4.5 stars perhaps... let's say... but Amazon does not let me select 4.5 stars so it's 4, this edition at least...

First review on game related product.
Though I purchased this strategy guide, I haven't yet utilized it. My process for purchasing any game or guide is subscribing to game magazines and reading the reviews for the game. Also, if I can get a demo for the game this helps a great deal in getting a feel for it--(control scheme). Purchasing a guide is helpful only if I get stuck in the game. Its more economical than calling a help/support/cheat number. I do hope this is a valid review and is useful to whomever reads it.

Quite Helpful
This book has gotten me through some confusing situations in the game. My feeling of accomplishment doesn't come from figuring out how to do something - it comes from actually being able to do it! One of the frustrations I have is that the guide is written so that it's not specific to a system, so you have to know the generic names of the control buttons. This is not a criticism of the product, just a fact when a game can be played on different delivery systems. I would like some of the pictures to be larger and clearer - I need the visual aids to help me along. Overall, without this book, I would have been stuck early in the game and stopped playing.

Simply the Best
I have been using Prima strategy guides for years now. They are quite frankly simply the best.They are easy to read and follow. WONDERFUL
This book is very good. It tells about all of the items in the game and how much u can get if you ship them. It also includes all of the recipes for cooking, over 200! The map in this game is 100% correct(the other person just cant read one!)To sum it all up this book talks about tolls, fishing, mining, farming, caring for animals, selling, making friends and get a spouse. It also includes maps. Plus it covers Harvest Moon: DS. THIS BOOK ROCKS

Man does this book suck!
This book is terrible! You read through the whole thing, and you don't even learn anything!
Good but not perfect
This book gives the reader a good general understanding of how networked gameprogramming works, and also a good bit of information about the internals of a complete game engine. The downside about this book is that it uses mixed hardware/software vertex processing which results in noncompatable programs with my laptop, however, if you change that to only software and recompile every demo then it works greate (A setting in CreateDevice()...), but slow (on my laptop...),, the occlusion checks ain't the best, and the partitioning on load is slow,, slow as in - you cant augment the code for profiling or it will be runnig for more then 15 minutes on a 1.03GHz laptop... ("more then" due to the fact that i aborted it....) and the use of 3DsMAX files as levelmodels... and the occlusions based not on the real environement but on objects placed in the scene.. (invisible...)...

Mastering Video Poker is not easy !

great for beginners
With no experience in 3D modeling, this book helped me get started. It showed me the best way to use the tools in Lightwave as well as some concepts behind modeling\animating. Now I am modeling cars, places, people, and doing some light animation.

First book of many...
I have been reading this series since this first book.I am about to purchase Game Programming Gems 5 because each book has given me so much incite to the many elements of game programming.You could easily take every one of these tips and gems and implement them not only in games but many systems that require optimization, graphics or sound programming.
Throw your other books away.
I swear, this series is like programming crack. Succinct, no extra "learning how to program" garbage, no extra commentary.Code. That works. Well. Quickly.

This a remarkably approachable book despite being written by an academic. Mr. Gee does an excellent job of exploring the role of video games in the lives of contemporary people. He explains succinctly how learning principles from video games can be applied to learning.

I think this is the best book till now in this specific game culture subjetc. There is no recipe in here, but there are lots of ingredients for game designers and educators can understand about this specific top.

Good for beginers not advanced uses
I was hoping this would cover the advanced features of fireworks, but this is clearly not the point. Masking, for example, is barely touched. Compositing hardly at all. I was really dissapointed as it does not help with the great features that set fireworks 8 apart from other graphics programs for the web. I think the online help is actually more helpful and useful.

If you know NOTHING about Fireworks this is the book to have as it guides you through the most basic of tools that Fireworks has.Nothing in depth but given the small size of the book I would expect that!Easy to follow along!

Absolute garbage!
This is by far the worst 'strategy guide' I have ever encountered. It was out of date before the game was even released, with much of its information seemingly taken from the game's beta testing. It has at the most 10 pages worth of accurate information, and you'll have to figure out which parts of the book are accurate for yourself.
Guild Wars: Game Guide
Is very helpful, but there is a lot missing, and it's hard to find what you're looking for in the book as opposed to the game...The maps are very helpful when you can find the one that applys to the game... I'd like to see an updated version of this book, I would definitely purchase it!!!

not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.

A Pokemon Fan's Dream Come True
My daughter love the whole Pokemon genre, and especially enjoys the GameBoy Pokemon games.She has poured through this book many times already and just loved it.I highly recommend it.

Excellent!
The bible all InDesign users should have in their bookshelves. The best reference and recommended book for those who want to learn everything about InDesign in clear and complete explanation. Ask, and this bible would have answers.
