5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on estimation/Kalman filter
I don't usually write online reviews but this book is so clear and useful that I really want to recommend it to others. It is well written with a good outline and summary for every chapter. It also has a pretty diverse range of topics on estimation, including an introductory chapter on basic estimation approaches (e.g., ML, MAP, least squares), and very practical extensions (e.g., state augmentation, square-root filters). Even though I am not in EE and some of the examples are thus not particularly helpful to me, I still find this book one of the best of all the estimation/Kalman filter books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars best standard book for target tracking system
I think any person who major in target tracking system related to the Kalman filter must see this book. This book present the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for target tracking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone that listens or produces audio should read this book
It is practically futile to review a book of this magnitude. The reviews on the back of the book alone let you know that: Bernie Grundman, Ted Jensen, Roger Nichols, George Massenberg and Mike Collins all think this is an excellent text.In fact it is.It may be the finest book in it's genre and it will survive format and technology changes due to it's emphasis on fundamentals and incredible depth.I highly reccommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars De-mystifies Mastering!
I have been a guitar player, songwriter, and producer for many years and an engineer when I had to be. There is always a certain amount of mystery around the magic done in post production mastering.I don't say this book gets you there magically, but it gives you a real understanding of what is involved and certainly gives you all the information you need to be on your way! Most professional digital recording software contains a lot of useful post production features, but if you don't understand the basics of mastering, they are of limited use.If nothing else, this book tells you what NOT to do if you are going to have someone ELSE master your product! Very useful and easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars "When the Student is Ready..."
The old saying goes "When the Student is ready the Master appears." Whether you are an engineer at a project studio or have aspirations of joining an elite group of artists known as Mastering Engineers this book is a must read. My cd's are sounding better and better with what I've gotten from it. As a composer/engineer/producer in my own little project studio my biggest gripe is, "When can I quit programming and begin creating?" This book is a big help to answer those technical issues and thus narrow my exploration and experimentation during the Mastering process. After all it's the end result that matters and no matter what Zappa says you can't"...fix it in the shrinkwrap". ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too wordy
Having to go thru some of the data mining such as CART, I find the book rather wordy.Sometimes, it takes a couple of readings to understand, too many termiologies.I think a lot of stuff might be better illustrated with mathematical formulae rather than words or both. For e.g., I was trying to understand what is surrogate variable, getting a big picture from the English is okay, but to actually compute it, I find information not as clear. This book is written in a way ... seem to be theoretical, and yet not rigorous enough.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very complete
This book is a very interesting book to learn the main statistical approach of data mining. It's clear and full of examples. If you go a Stanford data mining website you will find all the courses and exercises linked to the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Theoretical GA Textbook
This book primarily deals with the theoretical side of genetic algorithms. If you are looking for practical knowledge of how to implement a GA you should look elsewhere. For all intents and purposes this is a textbook. It's heavy on theory and proofs, but doesn't always explain everything in depth (that's what class time is for). There are problems at the end of each chapter that can be assigned to students.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I have an engineering degree, and I found this to be a little tough to follow for two reasons:5-0 out of 5 stars An introduction and much more
First it must be said that the book is not an introduction that the non-scientist will easily understand. Some knowledge of computer programming is assumed. It acknowledges this in the last paragraph of the preface. Many of the notations in the book are unfamiliar to business or financial readers. There is no mathematics beyond algebra so the aforementioned prerequisites are the main hills to climb.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Interaction Design
The majority of this book is from the thoughts and findings of other authors.Nothing orignal.Books is difficult to read and often does a poor job of explaining topics clearly.Currently using this book as a text book for a class and have to believe there is a better choice out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but not great
I have used this text for a year and half, for three instances of the same course (upper division undergrad).Good: 1. Each chapter is about a week's work, so it fits the schedule nicely; 2. Each chapter has "activities", "summary", and "assignments" which I find very useful when making assignments; 3. Lots of illustrations; 4. Interviews with professionals in the field are added at the end of each chapter -- this adds another dimension to the "textbook" aspects of the book; 5. Cartoons here and there. Could be improved: the quality of some of the illustrations -- some of them are photos that are dark and hard to make out. Some look like they came from the 1950s -- I am not sure how that is possible in a book published in 2002, but that's what it looks like to me.Still, the text is "nicely illustrated".The thing that stops this from being a "great" text is the quality of the writing and presentation of ideas. The writing is too simplistic.A "great" text finds ways to express things in a succinct manner, summarizing key ideas.Instead, this book tends to be wordy in many places, and lacks an effective organization of ideas. Finally, the text is starting to appear "dated", but few textbooks can withstand the breakneck speed of change in this area. That said, no student has complained (to me) about the text (but neither have they praised it). And, I have not been able to find a better text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Course Text for HCI students
The breath and depth of this text truly embodies the necessary content for beginning HCI students in an undergraduate and graduate program. I've successfully used this text every semester with my students since its inception. The author's perspective of the discipline accurately reflects an increasing trend in HCI education that places less emphasis on computing and more on designing products to enhance human communication based on the social sciences. It is organized to provide an instructor a way to pick and choose selected chapters or proceed sequentially. Each chapter is multi-dimensional in its approach to provide an array of content that includes both theory and practice. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This book is a rigorous exposition of formal languages and models of computation, with an introduction to computational complexity. The authors present the theory in a concise and straightforward manner, with an eye out for the practical applications. Exercises at the end of each chapter, including some that have been solved, help readers confirm and enhance their understanding of the material. This book is appropriate for upper-level computer science undergraduates who are comfortable with mathematical arguments. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Need some challenge? Come here!
I started to learn this course at the beginning of this semester and I just brought this book from Amazon in August.
1-0 out of 5 stars first edition is a classic, the second one unremarkable
The first edition is one of the best book in its field. A classic. A reference for many advanced courses in computer theory.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory text, but has several weaknesses
This was my textbook for an introductory course on Finite Automata and Languages - I enjoyed it a lot and I think that the chapters until the Turing Machines are covered very well, along with good examples. As one previous reviewer has already mentioned, the exercises can get very hard as compared to what's actually presented - this I found not too good.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In depth review of kernel methods in machine learning

5-0 out of 5 stars best book of kernel methods
It is the best book on kernel methods. It covers a wide range of subjects. 5-0 out of 5 stars interesting introduction to support vector machine learning
The authors are young researchers who did their Ph.D. research in this rapidly developing branch of pattern recognition. Because they are young and are at the state of the art in the filed the book has sevral advantages and disadvantages and what I see as a disadvantage someone else might view as an advantage. 1-0 out of 5 stars Content left as an exercise
I had the "pleasure" of being exposed to this nightmare of a book in a bachelor level course. I am told that it is normal to use this book on masters-degree level, so maybe it's because I wasn't "prepared" enough for this book that my take on it is so negative. The book does have it's moments, where things are understandable, but thats mainly if the stuff is easy. There is a lack of explenations throughout the entire book. It seems the author(s) view of "explenation" is the words "it is easy to see..." or "left as an exercise"....The proof of my feelings toward this book, can be seen on the teeth-marks that decorate the books cover. Im not writing this, because I need to vent steam...I passed the course on the first try, and it is now behind me, but I advice anyone faced with this book, to seek alternatives..this book is not a teaching book, it is a telling book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good textbook
I taught a couple of classes from the first edition of this textbook, and my students did fairly well.On the whole, they were able to understand the material and solve the homework problems.I certainly wouldn't mind teaching a class on this subject from the second edition as well, which I feel is a mild improvement over the first one.
4-0 out of 5 stars First and foremost, a math book
I enjoyed this book because I enjoy formal mathematics. This is not an applications book, but a formal study of the mathematics that underly algorithmic design and analysis.I'm no math wizard, and I found this book readable (but I had to take it very slowly). The course for which I bought the book only covered chapters 1 - 4 and glossed over the final 3 chapters, but I intend to read the rest over the summer between semesters because it's so well and thoroughly written. This book is *dense*.I had to re-read everything three times before I absorbed it all, but ultimately I've understood everything I've read. The hardest parts to understand were the formal "proofs by induction" on the lengths of strings and sets - and, as any math student knows, you can gloss over the proofs on the first reading.A lot of the formal definitions (finite automata, pushdown automata, Turing machines, context-free grammars, etc.) baffled me on the first reading, but after reviewing the examples and working through a few problems, I could go back, re-read the formal definition and understand it.

How much do we humans enjoy our current status as the most intelligent beings on earth? Enough to try to stop our own inventions from surpassing us in smarts? If so, we'd better pull the plug right now, because if Ray Kurzweil is right we've only got until about 2020 before computers outpace the human brain in computational power. 5-0 out of 5 stars Judge By The Evidence
I read SINGULARITY before SPIRITUAL which, of course, is exactly the wrong order. In the time since this book was published he has had an opportunity (in SINGULARITY) to reflect, confirm and gloat if you will. Unlike Drake, who promised we would receive confirmation of extraterrestrial life by the year 2000, Kurzweil is amazingly accurate. He forecast an extremely short discovery period for the Human Genome (confounding the "experts" who predicted 100s of years). He stated that Big Blue would defeat a human - this after a devestating defeat. He correctly predicted the exponential rate of computer power and all that this implies for our future.
5-0 out of 5 stars engineer scientist review
An excellent and entertaining 1999 book on how computer capability may continue to evolve over the next century with some scarey possibilities, but nevertheless credible.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for a skim, that is all
This book speculates about both the advance of computer technology in the 21st century and the socio-political response to it.Although it is peppered with a few interesting notions worth skimming, much of the speculation is unreasonable and philosophically naive.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent treatment
We used this book in an advanced undergraduate/early graduate class in computer algebra. The book provides a concise and rigorous, but very readable introduction to computational algebra theory, with algorithms written in pseudo code.4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and understandable, but some bugs
I found this book very useful as a reference while writing a smallcomputer algebra system. It's a definate must-have for all the hordes ofpeople out there who are rewriting subsets of Maple, Mathematica, etc.Theexplanation of the theory is relatively clear and helpful so that anot-so-theory-inclined person (such as myself) can understand the material. The cost of such clarity is a loss of some conciseness so someone wholives and breathes abstract algebra may desire a more esoteric book (likeWinkler's). The biggest flaw of the book are the poorly debuggedalgorithms.Almost every algorithm presented in the book has some sort ofminor flaw with serious reprecussions on correctness. This results in muchfrustration if you're actually trying to implement the algorithms. ... The central idea in the book is to analyse what evolution has provided us. In the form of ants being able to find the shortest path over terrain. This ability has inspired the research described herein.

2-0 out of 5 stars A technical approach towards causality
This is a very interesing book that Judea Pearl worte. The topic is currently of general interest for diverse fields as economics, social sciences and biology, however, this book is not intended for practitoners from these field who face a special problem and search for a possible solution. If you want to buy this book for this reason you will not be able to extract this information for this book. The reason therefor is that important technics like Bayesian Networks or Structural Equations are treated in 3 pages in each case. Judea Pearl assumes that the reader is already familiar with such methods beforehand. (Readers interested in the later subject are strongly refered to Bollen's book "Structural Equations with latent variables".)
4-0 out of 5 stars What is the cause of intolerance?

5-0 out of 5 stars Important but difficult
The scientific research community has adopted rigorous methods to eliminate the need for subjective judgments about many things, but when it comes to testing whether X causes Y, they revert to intuition and hand-waving. This book makes a strong argument that we shouldn't accept that. It demonstrates that it is possible to turn intuitions about causation into hypotheses that are unambiguous and testable.

Independent Component Analysis is a young and interesting topic that gained attention and still receiving more of it.5-0 out of 5 stars Nice and detailed description of ICA
This is a nice and self-contained book on the subject of independent component analysis (ICA). The authors start with relevant mathematical and statistical background (in Part I) to prepare readers for the derivations of ICA (though seasoned researchers may want to skip the first part of this book). The authors discuss the motivation behind ICA and present several ways to derive ICA (since this subject has been approached by several communities). The authors also compare and discuss the pros and cons of these approaches. The authors discuss several applications using ICA in Part III.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read on a Very Fascinating Topic
An easy read, yet truly insightful and entertaining. I do believe that most Humans have thought (and do think) about the subject... what makes one person more intelligent than others... why are humans more intelligent than other animals... how come animals don't seem to inherit their parents learnings... one could argue that despite our superior intelligence we seem to be making the same historical mistakes... would be fascinating to explore that topic... do humans lack intelligence when it comes to repeating historical mistakes... or is that due to some other capabilities/attributes taking over?

5-0 out of 5 stars Open your mind
A compelling, fascinating, and elegant explanation of how the brain may work, as detailed by Treo/Palm Pilot creator Hawkins. Explains the brain and neural networking as one big pattern-recognition algorithm. You'll find yourself analyzing and recognizing your own thought processes and behaviors in a very different way after you finish this. Concluding passages detailing future development of true AI and intelligent machines feature some really exciting stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting and enjoyable
This book is excellent! And intriguing.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Introduction to Mathcad 2000" misses the mark!
I believe a book entitled "Introduction to Mathcad 2000" ought to be an orderly exposition of the basics of the Mathcad 2000 program and progress on to more complex areas with meaningful examples. Exercises for the student ought to emphasize concepts and demonstrate the use of the program with answers supplied to reinforce correct usage. This book falls far short of the above goals. The book starts immediately with a sample calculation that does very little towards explaining the overall view of Mathcad 2000. The second chapter starts with a 2 page diatribe on global warming which has nothing to do with Mathcad 2000. In the following chapters, the author dos a fair job of covering some of Mathcad 2000's abilities but the examples used are often not well explained. The practise exercises do not have answers or in many cases, do not indicate what point the author is trying to make. Many pages are devoted to long, involved problems that are not suited to teaching Mathcad. In all, The book is only moderately useful as a reference but poorly suited as a Mathcad 2000 text. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Robot Navigation
Uncertainty is an important issue facing intelligent systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
The authors took 6 years to write this book. And it shows. This is a mindblowing tour through the algorithms used at the cutting edge of Robotics.
5-0 out of 5 stars an impressive research-level text
The book presents what is currently the frontier of probabilistic research in robotics. This is explained as a means of a robot coping with inadequate information from its perceptive inputs. The intent is to embed more robust control logic within the robot. Rather than having human programmers try to code for every contingency.
