Needs more examples!
I think this guy has a book about how the inmates are running the asylum...well this book suffers from what happens when the subject matter experts (SME) are allowed to write books.BORING!!!SME's always seem to forget to include compelling examples.Yes there are little screen shots, but IMO in order for a book to be compelling that has to do with design...it needs to show LOTS of examples of good design.The bulk of the book should be about breaking down those designs.I need to hear why a specific design is effective.Take a hint from Steve Krugs book "Don't Make me Think".That book is extremely effective without inundating the reader with jargon.Lots of examples withmeaningful visual breakdowns.Afterall...isnt UI design a VISUAL communication form?

Not for experienced developers
I have 7 years experience and I wasn't able to get any value out of this book.Based on some of the reviews on this site I thought that the book would be worth buying but unless you are in school or right out of school then your $35 is better spent elsewhere.
Good on concepts, weaker on examples
This follow up to About Face is a good overview of the critical concepts to improve software usability.Cooper and Reiman know their stuff.Reading this certainly provides you with the grounding you need to make good decisions.At a tactical level, the book could certainly do more to help with real-world examples.

This is a review of the 7th edition
This is a review of the SEVENTH edition of "Electric Circuits" by Nilsson & Riedel.Amazon generally keeps reviews of previous editions combined with later editions and that can be quite confusing.For example, many of these reviews make a complaint that the book has no answers in the back.That may have been true in their edition, but for this, simply turn to Appendix G page 939 and many answers are provided for selected problems.The authors state that all text and problems in this edition have been triple checked for accuracy.
A book that does not work
If you are new to circuits, and don't have an amazing instructor, this book will make you work for hours just to finish a few problems in the exercises. The examples in the book are ridiculous, cause they are so easy. But wait till you get to the exercises, you will know. It is true, if you can learn to do the harder problems, easier ones will be no factor. But you NEED to learn first, and this book is in no way a self- teaching book. The ability of the writers to communicate with the readers is almost non existent here.
Horrible Weeder Textbook
The homework problems were absolute hell to solve, with tons of complicated algebra. Even worse, the text gave superficial examples that gave no hints on how to approach more difficult problems. My grade suffered in this class, partially because it did not focus on the fundamental circuit analysis. Don't expect this book to help you on exams! ... Read more

Network textbook
This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

Clearify something....5 stars not accurate...
Everyone here critizes<< typos here and there.. lacking this and lacking that... WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND if this book is so bad... remember that next time you write a negative review.. that will help us (the newbies) know where to get this right information....
Disappointingand frustrating
For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads.However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity.In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try.Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm.After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass!My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book.Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam.None of which was covered with enough detail within this book.Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities).In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam.I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam.Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day.Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text).Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again.The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure!All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2). ... I've only had this book for a couple of weeks and have already found it a great reference. Extremely Verbose with Very Little Detail
Quick note: I am an experienced programmer, but fairly new to Ruby and the Rails framework. I have read all the other Ruby and Rails books available to date.
Great intro to ruby, ruby for rails from beginner to intermediate
chapter 13 - Ruby dynamics is worth the price by itself.
I don't quite like it
this maybe against the popular opinions, but the book is thick on author's philosophical thinkings (and the author is obviously fond of) on how various things are tied together, but thin on the actual things that you can do, and what to do. You have to wade through bunch of such mommy and apple pie stuff to get the point, which is a a pain. On the other hand, if you have plenty of time, and want to take it to savor the good of either ruby or rails or their interconnects, maybe it is the right book. ... Read more

Too specific at points
The material, if you wade through it, is good.BUT this book is extreamly dry.And there is no excuse for that in the modern era.As the authors of the Head First series explain, dryness is not the way to impart knowledge.It simply doesn't work on humans.Good ideas, bad execution.
I probably should have given it 5 stars...
This book succeeds brilliantly in two areas, but comes up a bit short in the third.
More balanced than perplexed
Sometimes we want to have things to be black and white, but working at extremes has shown to be the failure path.

very good book.
implementation and design of classes wise this book is replete with ideas. Since this book dealt with FDM, which are either cubbersome or difficult to program say american options, better is to deal with FE methods.

Computational Finance made efficient
This book encapsulates all that is wonderful about OOP and shows how generic programming techniques (based on the STL) can be effectively applied to financial engineering and numerical analytic problems. The book requires only a first-course level knowledge of C++ (at the level of for example Ivor Horton's Beginning C++) and a first course level knowledge of Financial Mathematics (at the level of for example John Hull's masterpiece) and takes the reader on an entertaining journey through the basics of the STL and the applications of STL constructs to computational-financial and numerical-analytic problems, especially those relating to the numerical solution of partial differential equations. Also, the author makes a persuasive case for finite-difference methods and deals with a few subtleties of the Crank-Nicholson algorithm. For best results, it should be read along with a decent book on the Standard Library (for example the one by Nicolai Josuttis). Overall, it's a pleasure to read and learn from, on a par with Mark Joshi's little design-patterns volume, and more detailed!

The best book in c++ instrument pricing, period.
Let me just say that I have a few financial modelling books, from Dr. Brooks to Mr. Joshi, and this is the best book by far.It clearly explain how to price a particular instruments using this poweful language.The book uses Standard Template Language (STL), by doing so your code are more readable and much faster.If I only had this book a few years back.Now I must say this book is for C++ programmers and Quants you really need to know C++ from beginning to end, templates, pointers, references, classes or that stuff you need it. This is the only book that comes with working code, it doesn't matter what type of compiler you have the code in the CD will work.Mr. Duffy explains how to model one factor and two factor Black-Scholes equations using finite differences, options(vanilla, exotic),interest rate and much more.The CD even comes with an Excel driver to transfer your data to Excel. Quant superstar Justin London is coming with his new book in a few months, and that book might over take this one, but as of right now this is the best C++ financial pricing book around.You can't go wrong with this one. ... Words words and more words but little substance
I bought this book based on all the reviews posted on Amazon.com. I must say I was extremely disappointed. The book does not describe even a single machine learning algorithm adequately - no pseudocode, no mathematical description, and at the end of the day, no real understanding. If you are an analytically challenged manager who wants to pick up a bunch of buzzwords to throw around to impress your equally analytically challeged colleagues or customers who don't have a clue, this might be the book for you - a n overpriced, highly overrated "data mining for dummies". If you want to learn something about machine learning, well.. stick to books like Machine Learning by Tom Mitchell or Elements of Statistical Learning by Hastie, Tibshirani, and Friedman.

Very helpful
The major virtue of this book is the emphasis on practical applications and bread-and-butter techniques for accomplishing tasks that one could expect in a business environment. That is not to say that these techniques could not be used in a scientific research environment. They indeed could be, and in fact may be even easier to implement due to the long time scales that are available in research environments for processing information. In the business world however data mining has proven to be an activity that gives a substantial competitive edge, and so many businesses are seeking even more sophisticated methods of data mining and Web mining. Data mining could easily be considered to a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), due to its emphasis on learning patterns and performing classification, and the learning and classification tools it uses were discovered by individuals who would describe themselves as being researchers in artificial intelligence. But many, and it is fair to include the authors of this book, do not want to view data mining as part of artificial intelligence, since the latter stirs up discussions on the origin of intelligence, autonomous robots, and conscious machines, to paraphrase a line from chapter 8 of this book. The authors make it a point to emphasize that data mining, or "machine learning" is concerned with the algorithms for the inference of structure from data and the validation of that structure.
Lucid
I'm surprisingly please with this book. I've been reading up on the topic and associated algorithms in other books for some time; I'm a software developer but don't have a statistics background, and so felt a lot of the texts were too focused on the math and the theory while being thin on content when it came to "rubber hitting the road", or even using clear, simple examples and straight-forward notation.

Excellent excellent book
I have enjoyed this book enormously throughout. While there are a fairly large number of radar books available, this is the first that I have read that lays out the signal processing aspects of radar in such a coherent, pedagogically sound, and self-contained way, generally from first principles. For example, the exposition of slow and fast time processing throughout the book was very illuminating, as was the connection drawn between the Neyman-Pearson receiver and the matched filter.The only other text I have seen that combines such clarity of vision, readability, and rigor is the book by Peebles, which unfortunately has little material on digital radar signal processing.
Superior treatment
This is a superior book! There is nothing comparable in either the general radar or the signal processing literature. It provides an exceptionally clear treatment of difficult subject matter. The author patiently guides the reader through radar basics and then into the depths of the associated data processing concepts. The treatment is so lucid that even a neophyte can expect to develop a deep understanding of the concepts involved and be able to apply them immediately (i.e.,When the boss comes in and says, "You're my radar expert. Tell me how you're going to process the all the data!", this book is the antidote to the ensuing panic attack.). The clarity of the brief radar dicussions throughout the text (e.g., the SAR chapter)will provide glimmers of additional insight on radar even to those with indepth knowledge of the area.

Extremely thorough, understandable, and well-written
I am a Computer Science student and purchased this book to learn Flash for use with a project.I am very pleased-I think the book has very thorough descriptions and examples, and also offers great advice about design issues and other important considerations when developing a project.
Ok
I have not seen the other Flash Bible Books so therefore gave it a 4 star rating. Also i am a tad dissapointed, the book itself has a lot of info (which the first few chapters is basic stuff) but it also seems that this may be the same content as the other Flash Bible books. It does go over some of the new Flash 8 features like the filters, however i was hoping the book would contain the new "BitmapData" and bitmap caching but it did not. Also maybe go over the timeline effects even if it is simple to understand. Had these features been included it would have been 5 stars.

The examples alone inspire ideas.
I honestly cannot believe how much information this book has on Flash 8.I mean, when you get your book, just looking at it you can see how much information it has.This book answered all of my questions concerning flash 8, and inspired many new ideas just from the examples in the book.If you want to spend money to make money, this book is definitely where you should start. ... Good book except a few errors and hpyes...
This book contains a lot of errors which should be corrected, and many pro-microsoft or authors' commercial tool hypes (which costs you your time). Some contents are repeating and it may take for you to finish the book longer than it should, but nicely written and well explaining a variety of topics. Basically this is a good book with few minor problems. With the same money, however, I am afraid that taking another Excel book could be a better choice.

Lot of good usage information
I found the book to meet the needs that I had to get a better understanding of some of the more capable functions in Excel.In particular, I was looking for more insight in the use of Pivot Tables which it provided although it stopped short of going sufficiently deep in the use of functions and formulas within Pivot Tables which would have been helpful.I particularly liked that it came with a CD that could be loaded on my laptop great when you don't have the book readily at hand.There were a few editing errors with items refering to the wrong figure or table, but not difficult to figure out which was the right referrence, just a minor annoyance.

Excellent In-Depth Resource
This book could not be more comprehensive. If you need to go deep and want to have a paper-based book to do it with (versus online help/tutorals), this is the one to have on your desk. A chapter each week will help you me much more productive. ... Read more

Waste of money
Ridiculously overpriced, even for a textbook.There are actual mistakes littered throughout the book and the accompanying slides that were provided to the professor.The occasional error is understandable in a first edition, but by the 9th edition it's inexcusable.
Expensive, but better than its competitors
Price over $130?Whew!But Kroenke's text is comparable in price (when purchased new) with its major competitor, Hoffer, Prescott, and McFadden's 7th edition (HPM), with which I will compare Kroenke's text below.(HPM is by the same publisher; eventually all textbooks will be sold by only one publisher!)To help with the price, I will not ask my students to buy a supplementary text for the database we choose to use, but will provide a few on library reserve.

YOU WANT TO BE IN PICTURES...!!
Are you a Macintosh filmmaker and DVD designer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author David Pogue, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is designed to give you a grounding in professional filming and editing techniques.
OK, I see how that's done!
After searching Apple's support site for help with using these two programs, I turned to David Pogue's excellent manual.I have several of David's manuals and this was certainly up to his standards. Easy to read and follow.Although there is a tremendous amount of meat in the programs, you probably wouldn't discover all the potential without spending a little time with another excellent Missing Manual.I would recommend this to anyone interested in building a professional iMovie or creating a smooth DVD collection of favorite images or clips. And, with almost no effort at all, you can build an out of the ordinary slide show made complete with music, fades and a nice variety of special effects.

Be your own movie director yourself - painless!
It would be natural to think why does you need to buy this 22 dollars book, if iMovie and iDVD is so easy as Apple claims. But unfortunately, it is not easy as they say, (as all software vendors which want to earn more money by save the cost to print clear written manual) It need some extra help, with more English, I mean. In this point of view, this book is more than worth, in particular, you can learn more tips and advice to successfully make your own movie.

Insightful, but short for the price
This book is a well-written look at, like the title says, the elements of user experience. While I think the $30 price tag (retail price) is a bit high for a 180 page book, and I think the topic would have been better covered in an eBook or long article (or series of articles), the author succeeds in communicating his vision of the pieces that comprise a user experience.
User centered bloatware!
Some nice ideas in a book with far too many pages. This story could be told in an article (OK, I'll admit a lenghty one), but it doesn't need a whole book to tell. And, although the ideas are nice, they are certainly not essential and they could be traded in for other equally good ideas on user-experience (imho)

Better IA through better understanding of the Dev Process
JJG has enlightened me about the 5 layers of User Experience Design: Strategy, Scope, Structure, Skeleton, and Surface.I have learned that the traditional Information Architecture of categorizing, labeling, and indexing data leaves much to be desired when trying to have a significant impact on the User-friendly outcome of a web application's Software Development Lifecycle.

Perfect for small projects!
Note: SPSS 13.0 for Windows Student Version cannot open data files containing more than 50 variables or 1,500 cases. Having said that, if you have less than 50 variables and 1,500 cases to deal with then this is the software for you. It came with a (brief) 227-page users guide that was pretty comprehensive all by itself. Order the SPSS 13.0 Guide to Data Analysis to go with it, and you have just about everything you need to fiddle with and learn the basics of statistical analysis.

Excellent for SPSS and statistics students
I have used this product in a research methods class and found it to perform quite well.While it may not have all the features of the full SPSS package it is more than adequate and does not require the student to pay the hefty fee of the full version.

Very disappointed
Beware - if you buy the student version it is not big enough to run the files necessary that you work on in class. Nowhere did it indicate on the Amazon site that it had limits of file size. Wouldn't one assume that if you are selling a "student" verson, that it will be able to run your school files?Don't buy it if you are a college student and need this software to complete your projects. I wasted $80 plus dollars. Didn't learn of its limitations until AFTER I loaded it, and when it wouldn't work found the limitation statement in the manual. Very disappointed. ... Read more

Beyond Awesome, really!
I am a business consultant that works with Microsoft, HP, Oracle, HP, Xerox etc. and teaches how to conduct sales presentations to CXOs for a living. I cansay that this book has taken the look, feel and ease of creating a first class executive level business case to a level I could have not imagined. At first it is quite daunting and overwhelming.But I had to get some business cases together for 50 marketing professionals in Sydney on a special workshop and I crashed into it.The MODD system once you "get it" is easy, fast and addictive. I ripped through Excel, PowerPoint and Word integrated data and information in no time flat with the MODD tools.It scared me it worked so well.This stuff is like awesome and it is refreshing to actually see a program work without a hitch. ( I wonder how they did that?)Krieger has made me look really, really good. Go for it!

Great integration of programs, Excellent CD
I have trained over 3,000 people in Microsoft Word. None of them had ever heard of or used styles. Styles are necessary if you're going to use Word correctly. So, I bought this book for two reasons. First, I find that a woman writes a better book about learning software. I think women authors seem to explain software in better detail, especially for beginners. Second, the back cover describes a CD that has "Dozens of professional designs and layouts." I like examples for learning.
Extremely Helpful for Creating Documents + Great Tools
This book is like having an assistant to help with my documents. I create a lot of my own documents at work, and they have to look good. The book is a true help with that, not to mention the tools that come with the book. And, I can't believe how many how-to articles and tip sheets come along with the tools on the CD. Those articles are so great for quick and practical answers to the whatever I need to get done - I use them all the time.
