5-0 out of 5 stars Great CORBA Book
This has to be one of the best CORBA books that I have read. It has helped me debug code and fix some really knotty problems. I found the exposition clear and easy to follow, and the index a useful tool. I don't think the authors intended it to be read cover-to-cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to CORBA
For my money, this book is worth every cent and more. The authors are knowledgable and articulate. If you know of a 3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for advanced users
As the title states this is a book for advanced programmers. Not the kind of book I would recommend to someone looking to pick up a book and the learn from it. Might serve as an excellent reference source. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great for beginners in CORBA, however you have to be a little more than advanced in JAVA or C++ to understand the underlying material. It provides good examples and I figured out how to better manage my IDL files/functions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CORBA book for Java Developers
As a Sr. Java developer, I was looking for a good CORBA book with a Java slant. Until I found this one, I wasn't having much luck. Look no further. There are lots and lots of examples in Java (and C++). I've only read 100 pages, but so far, I really like this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
It's a pretty good book, though, not really comparable to "Advanced CORBA programming with C++". If you really want a good CORBA reference book get Henning and Vinoski's book. The best thing about this book is that it also includes Java which makes it a pretty good buy. Not all of the code is available electronically on the book's website which can make it cumbersome if you want to actually try to run some of examples.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your the man Sing
After looking at all the JINI books available except the O'Reilly one, I found this book to be best....by far!5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of material and code
I used this book in parallell with other books.5-0 out of 5 stars A complete, detailed, well-written book
Mr. Li starts out with a section focusing on advanced RMI and CORBA, and how they relate to Jini. The CORBA section includes examples for building a Java client/server using the ORB that comes with the JDK, as well as using a C client on Linux with the free ORBit ORB. An excellent overview of CORBA for people who have never used it or simply haven't used it with Java. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for a computer science major - not a cook book.
Deals with concepts of OOP and introduces the OO framework and then object model for CORBA. It is deals more with the concepts behind the code rather than give you code samples to cut and paste. Many of the programming concepts are intuitive if you know where you are and where you want to go. This book gives you an idea about the starting point and the final destination in OOP and couple of known paths to get there.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent quick coverage of CORBA and C++ techniques
This book does a remarkable job of covering the CORBA and C++ technique from an OO perspective. The examples chosen are well thought of and moderately complex, giving a taste of good C++ practice as well. It assumes familiarity with C++, thus saving time and space on teaching from scratch.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good overview of corba architecture
Just browse through some portion of the book, it's very well written, various aspects of design pattern, framework and corba implementation were well covered. Lacked of depth/detail was its shortingcoming, but was well compensated by its architecture overview, after all I wasn't expect a programmer's reference ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Overview on CORBA and Middleware for Beginners
This book is more suitable for beginners that want an insight to the jargon-laden world of Java middleware.5-0 out of 5 stars Best CORBA / Java Book
An exceptionally well-written book by best-selling authors. The book4-0 out of 5 stars I give 5 stars for the conceptual discussion parts
When you look at the table of contents, you can discover the book is not just about how Java and Corba work together.Or let me put it this way, that's not the only theme you can get from this insightful book.My take-away after reading all the parts where it discusses the history and difference between Corba and other distributed object technology is a satisfatorily complete overview of all these middleware/messaging technology, which are all important contributors to today's red hot J2EE-compliant application server market (BEA WebLogic, IBM Websphere), or what EJB likes to be known as: ORB with TP monitor capability.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks depth
Book does not convey information in a concise way. Quite voluminous book with no depth. Definitely not a good book for any level of programmers.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to advanced features
Written by the OMG, this book is NOT for beginners, but if you get CORBA for dummies and this book, you'll be in like Flint! It is OMG's explanation of new features that are in CORBA 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4, collectively referred to as CORBA 3.The book is thick and meaty, and after a brief 100-page intro, gets down to the real business of explaining the new Services such as Naming, Event, Transaction, and Security Services as well as the CORBA Component Model.I can't name all of the new CORBA 3 features here.Simply to state -this book covers them all. It's must-reading for all experienced CORBA programmers.1-0 out of 5 stars If you have nothing to say - write a stupid book

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but now somewhat out of date
"IIOP Complete" has a long chapter outlining the coming enhancements in IIOP and GIOP versions 1.2, but since the book was published before these versions were released, it is not as current as one might wish today.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, Good Rerence, Easy Read
If you need a better understanding of IIOP, or you want a better understanding of the underpinnings of CORBA, you will not be disappointed with this book.I have not found a better book on IIOP.4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Technical Book with a Lot of Detail & a Limited Topic
This book contains surprisingly many details on its 262 pages. The print is small and hardly any sentence is wasted. It makes a very accurate impression. I easily trust the authors on their facts and arguments. They seem to be knowledgeable and close to the field. Personally I would prefer larger print, more sentences per idea and a little wider scope in topic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique guide for security of enterprise solutions
More than a year passed since i reviewed this book and still it remains 5 stars.4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I've been using this book for a couple of months now and I have found it pretty invaluable. It manages to give a good technical explanation (I mean at the designer/programmer level) as well as include information on the big picture. It covers, in considerable detail, role based security, RBAC, RAD, both EJB and CORBA solutions, and ends with a discussion of how you might build an integrated security system for a fictitous company called eBusiness.com5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for a security engineer
Up to now, this book is unique in its kind, as it really covers the security aspects of distributed applications as we see them more and more these days. The authors do not only cover (very new) technologies and standards from the domain of EJB and CORBA, they also make us aware of their integration with legacy systems and network security. I liked the way they try to pass their knowledge and experience to the reader. Despite the fact that it is written by three persons, the book is of a consistent style. An example application serves troughout the book to explain the coved topics. Altough it is a small and simple application (real world is tougher...), it shows amazingly well what problems have to be dealt with in the enterprise. The book won't give you answers to all your question, but will certainly help to find your own. I recommend it reading from cover to cover, later chapters do refer to earlier ones. Definitely a useful book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

CORBA--the Common Object Request Broker Architecture--is a widely useddistributed system standard that uses object-oriented concepts to describe howcomplex computing tasks can be divided between heterogeneous networked hardwareplatforms. Often, CORBA is implemented as a redundant, fail-safe,designed/patterned system environment in which a task can dynamicallyredistribute execution of subtasks when hardware components fail. Distributedprograms survive crashes of individual machines--they're elegant, very sexy, andbest if learned by example instead of theory.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
This text, and the associated CD ROM are outdated. This is expected for a book that describes a live technology, unfortunately there is no errata to be found, not even on the author's website.
5-0 out of 5 stars MICO does the business.
MICO is a complete implementation of CORBA which complies with the CORBAstandard. It is freely available in source and binary formats and it hasbeen ported to a number of environments. Because it is available in sourceformat, you can readily port MICO to a new environment.5-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
This is the second time I've purchased the Mico book/cd by Puder and Romer. The book covers installation { I've tried all but the AIX without trouble }, has a brief over-view of CORBA concepts, and does a quick runthrough of how to use CORBA and MICO in specific. It then walks throughmore code and explanation with some of the 'core' services one uses withCORBA.With a 195 page book do not expect a lot of hand holding.Enoughinformation is provided for a self-starter to start climbing up the ladderof knowledge.Make sure you have at least a working knowledge of C++.Onthe other hand the sheer simplicity of CORBA makes the ladder a rathershort one.Other than that, this is the most dog-eared book I have onCORBA!{ Clienter/Server Programming with Java and Corba is the 2nd } ... 3-0 out of 5 stars heavy reading
The biggest problem I have with this book is its weight. It's just too big and clunky to hold up to read.Splitting into two bindings would have been nice. But it does cover a lot and it needs to be large to do so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
I bought the Beginners Guide to Linux Programming and I really liked that book. This book is a very good follow-up, but it doesn't give the reader more programming tips.5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for a wide range of Open Source technologies

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good for teaching
This book is good for the expert or people who are faimiliar with the CORBA. Altough the authors are the professional programmer, they need to pratice how to teach the audiences. If you go to the Java web site, they will describe you step by step. This book is not a good programming. It is only the theoritical book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money. Look for something else.
I read this book from starting, when I started trying to use the excercises by downloading from the authors recommended site it was failing beacuse all the programs author wrote was using Visibroker's ORB implementation(not with the Java1.2 ORB implementation). The language author used merely confuses you when you try to understand the program from his explaination given above each implementaion of the program. You can't even understand where the implementation of the program started or ended this is the case with his examples in 8th chapter of this book which also has lot of printing mistakes with missing underscores "_". I am tired of trying to read and then spending half an hour on understanding what he actually meant(Big waste of time). Some times you may wonder whether he is trying to explain you or confuse you. Please look for some other good book, I lost money but you can save yours.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book to recommend
I bought mamy books and do not have time to write many reviews. But if I was really disappointed in a book, I want to write a review. There are many junk Java books in the market. This one is not better than them. The book even does not have a good example to show what a J2EE technology is.If you have money and just want to put a book on your book shelf to look up occasionally, you can consider this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad Value !
Whilst I feel the book is excellant value for money and the Author has done a good job I would argue that some of the material in the book should have been excluded (to save a tree or two) e.g. Chapter 2,52 - 54 and included in appendix ? - but hey thats me trying to reduce the 1000 odd pages that I read !!.5-0 out of 5 stars Reference for the serious J2EE developer
If you are searching for a reference manual that covers the basics about all the technologies involved in J2EE this is the book to buy. Keep in mind that it is impossible to cover Enterprise Java Beans,JSP,Servlets in detail in just one book. So if you're after a special thing like only EJB feel free to buy other books that cover only Enterprise Java Beans but otherwise this book is really worth its bucks simply because it introduces you to J2EE and afterwards you are able to understand what all those things are about. ... Do you really want to do this? Learn how to use CORBA in Java? Think carefully about this initial step. Because the book does not really address well the rationale for doing so. It basically presupposes that it is useful to learn and proceeds to teach you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest
I'm a novice at CORBA and this book didn't prep meproperly.Examples seemed to be Java examples ported over to C++.It was more of a reference than a learning tool.I've looked over the CORBA spec and a lot of thematerial from the spec is in the book almost verbatim.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
book is easy to read and excellent information

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I wanted to learn corba with this book but I realized that I have to rely on other sources to learn about it. This book contains excerpts from a book about corba with java and not c++, where the reference to java was not evenremoved and replaced by c++. Furthermore even as the unexperienced readerin corba I found many mistakes in this book regarding object and functiondefinitions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for serious developers.
I would reccomend this book only to people who are new to Java Programming and want an overall treatise with something on everything possible server side. But for those who are already in this field for a while and want to build on their knowledge this book would be a big disappointment. The other main drawback of this book is its bulkiness.2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Professionals
I bought this book a few months ago and I found out that it covers the basics of J2EE.Imagine 10+ authors. Each talks about their own thing and then they slap it together and call it a Wrox Published book.My gripes with this book are:5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
