5-0 out of 5 stars MCSE W2K Exam Cram Core Four
I am currently preparing for MCSE in Windows 2000.These books provide an excellent supplement to the material learned in class.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent prep
I'd have to say this is the best set of books to help you pass the core Microsoft exams you can get....but it is FAR from perfect. The Server book gave me to much of "you'll have to know" whatever to pass the exam, and then went on to NOT inform me of that subject. That's why I bought the book isn't it?4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful resource
I just passed my 70-240 exam today, due in part to this set. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Sufficient
This book gives you alot of facts to remember and no examples to use.The test was all configuration and security scenario questions and alot of stuff in the book was hardly covered like backup and recovery, DTS, BCP, DBCC statements, replication, maybe one question each on these. No questions at all on steps to take during installation and configuration.I will be looking for something to supplement this with..

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I read the entire book in 2 days... there is nothing in the book to actually remember... No concepts are described... all you see in this book are the screen shots of Enterprise Manager...
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing...
No, no, no..This book is a waste of time.It gives an IN DEPTH step by step, excrutiatingly detailed how-to examples on using the installation wizard, and then glosses over the more important details that actually appear on the exam (like the C2 auditing and analyzing the SQL 2000 performance counters). If you're familiar at all with the software, this book has little or nothing to offer you in terms of actually test preparation. Microsoft assumes everybody taking the certification exams already knows when to click the next button.. Don't waste your time or money on this. The Dummies book is much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Consice and Comprehensive at That
Well, I was learning MS SQL with this book after I had some development experience with MySQL. This actually was the right book for me and I was able to quickly study those aspects of MS SQL that are different from MySQL. I was not only able to pass the exam but also acquired skills that I am currenty using on my job.
1-0 out of 5 stars What isproof reading
I think the author did good but it all went to pot at the proofreaders. A typo, error, or omission in 1 out of 15 pages.I had to write stuff in and cross stuff out. It would throw the novice SQL person off on XML alone because of the thouroughly botched job between XML auto and XML raw and claiming that the ELEMENT phrase can be used with XML RAW which it can not. One of many errors.Buy the MS training book, read BOL, get transcenders, but stay clear of this unless you are a seasoned pro that can pick out the mistakes from the good stuff

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
Of all the technical books I have read, this is probably by far the worst. There are many typos; errors where the book uses the wrong word and throws you off; and inconsistencies where the text says something then the answer to the practice question says something different. But additionally, the book covers some materials insufficiently to be at all useful, in other words it is too condensed. This book is not enough to pass the exam. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Preparation Material for OCP
I am a beginner in Oracle and I don't have an hands on experience. This book is a very good book to prepare for the test, I pass 55/60. The lack of this book is that some of its discussion are overlapping, for example some definitions are redefined again in later chapter with difference, some are okay some are confusing. Sybex books are better for reading, but on this area exam cram will prepare you better.5-0 out of 5 stars ALL YOU NEED for IZO-025
This book is all you need, but there are a few things that you need to realize before taking the test.First, I would like to say that I am a Sybase DBA with no Oracle experience, and I passed with a 50/60 by using this book. You don't really need experience to pass the Oracle certification exams if you get the right book, and this one is the right one.The method that I use is to read the book, to write information on note cards as I am reading, and to review them before the test.It works, and I wouldn't bother with the Oracle courses unless you don't understand a concept or you feel that you need more hands-on experience.5-0 out of 5 stars Superior for exam prep, and reference!
Its quality far surpasses that of the Exam Cram books I bought years ago for MCSE certification. This is comprehensive, reliable, pertinent information and nothing else packed into a dense little book.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good book to read just before the test
The purpose of these types of books (Exam Crams and Passports) are to provide a means for a quick review before taking a cert test. That said, this book accomplishes the goal. I read this book a week out before taking my Linux+ test which further provided me more example questions to go through. However, they are still not quite indicative of the questons found on the Linux+ exam. However, they better than the ones typically provided with other Linux+ study books. The cram sheet is always useful to look over just before entering the test room. Use this book in addition to other resources.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite obsolete now
I took the exam last Friday and I just got a confirmation that I'm a RHCE now, so I hope my info is pretty recent. First of all I enjoy Kara's language. It's really friendly and it's a kind of loving mom teaching her children style. It's not so common for technical books and I really like it. I agree with other reviewers that the book has some mistakes but usually they are not very significant for your test results. Probably the right way to say is "they were not" because this book covers 6.x version of RedHat and the current exam is based on 7.2. It makes a big difference. They really included many things specific to the latest software version. Some questions from the practice test in this book are still very similar to real ones, but that multiple choice test is just one task out of 3 and it's probably the easiest one. This book doesn't help you much to get prepared for troubleshouting or installation tasks.Installation, GRUB, X Windows, network security, service management - all those things have been changed significantly. 1-0 out of 5 stars This book is full of errors.
This book is announced as a supplement to a study guide. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reading the cover of a book is a good idea

1-0 out of 5 stars not sueful any more . . .
This book is a neat book and all, but the questions are too simple compared to the actual test.I took the test today ... and passed but with no help from this book.I got most of my useful information from the examp PREP book, but not all of it.That book is better, but goes into certain details that you will NOT have to know.I would say to invest in the larger book, but not this smaller one.In fact, I would suggest not getting ANY book rated for the old test to prepare for the new network+ test form.Check out mcse.com for a good review and check out jeff richard's geocities site for good info on important areas to study....

5-0 out of 5 stars Exam Cram books are great study guides
I just took my Network+ exam and did pretty well, and the book I mainly used to study from was the Network+ Exam Cram.I can't think of a question on the test that wasn't covered in that book! I also used the A+ Exam Cram to take the A+ exam and also passed only using that book! The Exam Cram series is great! The information is accurate, and the book price is more than reasonable for the help it gives you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I bought this book because I taught it would be like the Network+ Exam Prep and cram pack. But to my surprise it was not written for a beginner like me. I took the exam on the Network+ after reading the books and had no problem passing the exam. After rerading this book I was left standing with my mouth open.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I was looking for a book that provided both a concise and in depth view into routing. I was surprised to find that this book did not repeat the same thing that everyother book does. His Chapter 1 offers not only the basic facts about routing, but also incorporates his own perceptions which facilitates understanding the subject and the manner in which he explains the topics. The information discussed within the book provides a proper foundation for beginners, and a deeper look into the routing algorithms for advanced engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly in depth book on IP routing with Cisco gear!
This book is great! A very thorough explanation of the routing protocols, lots of hints on how to configure those properly, the caveats of certain "typical" configurations, comprehensive research on all kinds of routing loops, you name it! The bridging section is invaluable. While this book is definitely an expert level, yet it you don't need to be one as this book will take you to the expert level should you choose to read it and work through the configurations it offers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not thrilled with this one
This book is a tough read. The author uses 100 words to explain something that could be done in 25. It takes a simple subject and makes it too complicated to understand. The target audience is advanced users that want in depth information. Not what I would expect from the Little Black Book series. I would stick with Cisco Press on IP routing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My rating: Good++ or Great-
I purchased this book in 1999, but only find time to read it recently, and thus unfortunately let go of a golden chance of passing CLSC 1.0 exam. This 700+ pages cram is a solid, systematic, and detail presentation of major switching topics - good enough that I carry it around as on-the-job reference, and also using it as an important part of my preparation for Swiching 2.0 exam, partly because (1) most BCMSN book for switching 2.0 exam is still not out (2) I couldn't see too many authors out there that can explain thing as well as Richard Deal's book. I have no complaint of the thick 700+ pages format - in fact I do hope that this book can expand in size and perhaps explain some tricky topics (tricky for guy like me who previously only work with the trickless ethernet hubs) like vtp, stp in a more graphic manner, with perhaps more examples. And perhaps add more examples on how big big switching network is built - like what I see in Kennedy Clarke's book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get Muticast info somewhere else....
The book does a decent job of covering most topics, but stay clear of the muticast section. There is constant confusion about which multicast address is for all hosts 224.0.0.1 and which is for all routers on a subnet 224.0.0.2. The author has switched them in more than one place. There is also one stating that 224.1.1.1 is for all routers on a subnet. It's funny, the Cisco Press book used the address 224.1.1.1 in an example in that same chapter. hmmmmm....strange.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exercise Caution
A career in IT (if you want to be successful) requires a great deal of your personal time to study new technologies, or even a new programming language (or even a new version of programming language). I have worked with a lot of entry level IT individuals and the drop-out rate is far more than any other position in our company (retail/distributor). I think I understand why these people are failing and returning to their old careers. That is because they have dreamt of landing the entry-level Administrator, or web developer role from the get go. In the IT community there is a great deal of Mentor/Student relationships in companies. A lot of entry-level people are not willing to take direction from individuals that may be many years younger than them, or they have no college education. The few entry-level individuals that have survived and thrived came into the company with a willing to learn, take direction, and honesty with their expectations. In addition, they studied when they went home and took a REAL personal interest in the details of their job. After a few years on mentoring they were more than ready for administration.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book with lots of detail
I picked this book up because I've just started my studies in IT and I was curious to know what careers there were in the field. This book gave me a nice overview, and focused my energies. I'm not saying what aspect of IT interests me most. :)5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars

2-0 out of 5 stars Some of these cards need to be corrected
I am quite shocked at how many obvious errors there are in the CCNARouting and Switching Flash Cards that I just purchased. A number (ten ormore) of them have very egregrious errors. Example: a question for whichnone of 'answers' in the selection of answers are correct. Example: aquestion that starts out "GRP is a distance vector protocol" whenit should be IGRP. Example: Question about an access-list 179, but thesupposedly correct answer shows access-list 155. Example: question aboutsubnet mask of 255.255.255.240, how many host id bits are there on thisnetwork? 1-0 out of 5 stars If you want to get certified, walk away!!!!
This book from the ones I have had the fortune to look at, is the worst. With this book you will get more confusion in terms and concepts thatin any other book. ..., some of the answers to the practice tests are wrong, the "excercises" were you have to label the elements in the powerpoint window are the most confusing item, you don't know if the author wants you to label a "slide" a "text box" in other words, you have to "guess" what is he trying to test you on. 3-0 out of 5 stars Needs Improvement
I am currently using this book. The format of this book is easy to follow, but I found several typos and the exercises at the end of the chapter have no answer sheet, so you don't know if you have answered the questions correctly. It also refers to several files for use and I didn't see them on the accompanying CD. I know Powerpoint very well, so I can easily duplicate the exercises using my own files. However, for a person new to Powerpoint this would be confusing. This book needs to have an answer sheet for all of the exercises at the end of each section and it also needs to tell you where to find the files it is referring to as you go through the exercises! On the up side, I have learned neat tricks and tips that have made my life easier when working with Powerpoint.I plan to take the MOUS within the next two months.I recommend to others, that if you purchase this book, you might want to purchase an additional study aid such as the Powerpoint 2000 Cheat Sheet that I just ordered, which received great reviews.

3-0 out of 5 stars First edition needs an overhaul
I found the work-through of the book very helpful. There are many typographical errors that make it very frustrating.People are told to add text boxes to AutoShapes - a tech support's nightmare. The CD holds a self-extracting zip that is never mentioned in the book but is necessary to do the exercises. There is no finished product once you complete the exercise to check your work against so you do not know if it is correct or not. There are many good helpful hints into the workings of PowerPoint 2000. Hopefully in the second edition these problem area will be addressed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Know Access in and out, then pick up this book and pass
I develop Access 2000 applications for a small consulting company.I wanted to get certified in Access for personal benefit and to see how much I knew.A few weeks before the exam, I changed my mind and actually registered for the Access XP exam instead. It is very easy to pass the Access XP exam even if you are an Access 2000 user.I passed today with an 889.Besides approximately three years of experience with Access 97/2000, I used this book as my primary resource.4-0 out of 5 stars Would recommend
I disagree with the review from Florida. I had only one minor problem with the exercises in the book matching with the files on the CD.In Unit K, page K-10, there is an exercise to query the database. The book says thereshould be 102 records matching the query done with <4/1/00 on theAttendence table except the mistake is there are a total of no recordsbefore, the earliest is 5/5/00. And only 65 records in the table to queryon. Can't possibly get the 102 records on the 65 from the query the booksays should be displayed. Never did figure out if I did something wrong orit is an error. I took the Access 2000 MOUS exam and passed with 916/1000.I have no prior experience working working with Access and did not know howto do reports, forms, etc. I used this book to go through step by step onthe how to's and will keep as a reference book. I then used the Access 2000Cheat Sheet to prepare for the exam. The book by Freiedrichsen had a lot ofMOUS objectives listed next to the objectives for each Unit. There areunits A through P. M to P have nothing to do with the the objectives set myMicrosoft although the book says the first half of the book is for theAccess Core and the remaining part will prepare for the Expert level. Thereis only one exam for Access 2000 and no core or expert level. I liked bookformat. Each page covered one topic. On the left-side would be theexplanation and walk-through, with the right-side showing pictures of whatthe screen should look like with good information. If anything, this bookhas too much information if you are preparing for the MOUS exam. Use thisbook if you have no prior experience in learning how to use Access and forreference, but use the Cheat Sheet to prepare for the exam format.Wouldhave given five stars except for the error and the objectives stated in thebook did not match Microsoft, and felt the Cheat Sheet book better preparedme for the exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars We deserve better!
Attractively priced, this book is very well written, uses excellent methodology, proceeding from the simplest to the most complex topics in Access on a continuum steadily increasing in difficulty. And this is good.It comes with a data CD for the exercises in the book, which also offers ananswer key for every "Review Concepts" exercise. But both thedata for the exercises and the solutions to reviews are rife with errors!Furthermore, after the middle of the book, the data on the accompanying CDoftentimes doesn't even match the exercises! It's very demoralizing. I wasvery upbeat when I began, thinking that the errors were tiny andinsignificant. But they only get worse as you go along. Courseware must bethoroughly tested in order to be error proof. Unfortunately, this didn'thappen here. Obviously defective data files have sabotaged a very talentedand thoughtful author's work. The whole problem could be remedied with areplacement CD. I've been in touch with the publishers about the problemand I sure hope they replace the CD because its useless courseware fortraining small groups if the data disk is that defective. Otherwise theconcepts are explained concisely and accurately and I'm confident thequestions in the review sections closely resemble those on the MOUScertification test. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Use to Cross-Reference
The book is a guick read as the title suggests (EXAM CRAM). I gave it a 3 because it forces one to cross reference (not because of the content per se) since it contains unfortunate errors in a number of places. And this is a good thing. If one has studied this text (in a negative-postive twist) keeps you on your toes. As a cram it is fine. If this is your sole text you will get hosed. Cross-reference much and see if you can spot the errors. I'm sure this is more a publishing thing than the oversight of the authors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Finishing off The Study
Good overall book for finishing off the studying for the CCIE written.I passed the written on the first go.However, there are quite a few typos, some misc fact errors and the sample test/questions don't reflect what is actually on the test (way to easy).Would definitely review the CCIE TCP/IP Vol. I&II and CCIE Switching books, especially focusing on the review questions - not multiple choice but fill in the blank. The bottom line ... Don't expect to pass the written exam if this is your only source of knowledge/experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please do NOT use this book
Please do not waste your time with this book. It is full of mistakes and inaccurate information. And in parts where it is correct, it is usually incomplete.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide
This book is excellent as a quick study guide for the Solaris 8 SCSA exams.Whether one passes or not does not determine whether this is a good book or not.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good brief book for experienced guys....
This book is pretty helpful for those having good hands on experience. It helps to prepare in short time for them. It touches most of the test objectives. I scored 90+ in part I & II exam & used this book mostly. Here things are given very shortly. One shouldstudy this along with some good descriptive book for better result.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Prep for the Exams
This book covers both tests for the Solaris 8 Sys Admin cert.It has a practice test for each exam I & II (a good thing). It identifies the areas and the depth of proficiency needed for the exams.Take heed, Exam II coverage needs a little a more work (I felt).I blew the first exam out of the water and skimmed the surface on Exam II.Use this book as a road map to focus your study. ...
